French-Senegalese actor and producer Seydina Baldé has worn many hats across his career including World Karate Champion and stuntman on films such as Brian de Palma’s Femme Fatale and Bond movie Casino Royale, but his dream since childhood has been to be an actor.
After a dozen small parts, Baldé engineered his first starring role with the self-produced, English-language action thriller Covert Operation (aka The Borderland). The North Korean-set movie, about a bounty hunter on a mission to break prisoners out of high-security military compound, sold to Lionsgate for the U.S. and won praise from action movie fans.
A decade later, Baldé is appearing in the most ambitious production of his career, six-part show Lex Africana, which is being billed as the first martial arts-based action thriller to come out of West Africa.

Justin Timberlake had a few choice words to share during a concert performance.
While performing at a free show at Irving Plaza in New York City on his birthday Wednesday, the singer took a moment to state that he has “nobody” to apologize to.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize to absolutely fucking nobody,” the singer is overheard saying in fan videos from the concert circulating online, with a concertgoer confirming Timberlake’s statement to People.
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Timberlake’s reps for comment.
The statement comes after Britney Spears made an apology statement on social media Sunday in a now-deleted post shared via her Instagram, which has now gone private. In the post, Spears had shared a clip of Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show’s “Classroom Instruments” segment, writing, “I wanna apologize for some of the things I wrote about in my book.

For the first time since beginning this editorial series, we’re discussing a documentary rather than a fiction film. That’s because Yellow Veil just released a supersized documentary about the history of the Erotic Thriller called We Kill For Love: The Lost World of the Erotic Thriller (2023).
Clocking in at 163 minutes, this is a thorough, occasionally indulgent documentary written and directed by Anthony Penta. The doc uses a framing device featuring an archivist character, played by Michael Reed, cataloguing countless VHS tapes and watching “Suspect Interviews” (aka talking head interviews) in his dimly lit office. These segments recur throughout We Kill For Love, and also feature voice-over narration from Penta that are partially purple prose, partially quotations from academic articles and books on the genre.
The vast majority of the documentary, however, is taken up by clips and talking head interviews. There’s a good variety of interviewees, including scholars such Linda Ruth Williams,...

French Montana and producer Harry Fraud are facing a copyright infringement lawsuit filed by a musician named Skylar Gudasz, who claims the pair sampled one of her songs without permission.
The lawsuit, obtained by Rolling Stone, alleges Montana and Fraud’s 2022 collaboration “Blue Chills” features an uncleared sample of Gudasz’s 2020 song “Femme Fatal.” Gudasz further claims that French Montana and his reps were in the process of securing a license for the sample, but the rapper released “Blue Chills” before the deal was finalized.

Tarak Ben Ammar has big plans for Italy. The Franco-Tunisian film and TV mogul is already a major player in the Italian industry thanks to Eagle Pictures, the production and distribution group he acquired in 2007 that is now Italy’s largest independent distributor due to exclusive distribution deals with Paramount and Sony Pictures for the territory. Ben Ammar joined Tom Cruise on the Rome red carpet for the June 19 world premiere of Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and later introduced Cruise to new Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni. “The meeting [between Cruise and Meloni] was very interesting. The prime minister knows a lot about cinema,” says Ben Ammar about the far-right leader.
Alongside Eagle’s distribution deals, the company has also partnered with Sony to co-produce six films together, including The Equalizer 3, the latest in Antoine Fuqua’s action franchise starring Denzel Washington that was shot entirely in Italy.

HBO has long been considered the leader in prestige television programming, and, over the last five months, the 51-year-old cable network has fully reinforced this belief with the critically acclaimed first season of "The Last of Us" and the perfectly pitched conclusions of "Succession" and "Barry." But while we're still buzzing over the finales of those last two shows, you can't help but look ahead and wonder how the King of Peak TV rides this wave of hosannas to the next must-watch triumphs.
The jury is out as to whether Sam Levinson's "The Idol" will draw as many eyeballs as his wildly popular teen melodrama "Euphoria," but, judging from the critical reaction thus far (and the behind-the-scenes controversy), the series promises to be a supercharged hot-take generator. The show stars Lily-Rose Depp as an out-of-control pop star whose instability and sexual desirability is wantonly exploited to launch her to diva immortality.

Set after the series conclusion of Twd, the Reedus-led offshoot finds the zombie apocalypse fan favorite transported across the Atlantic to France and a whole new level of a world gone mad.

In 2002, a movie called Femme Fatale came out and quickly gained a cult following. Written and directed by Brian De Palma, the neo-noir thriller starred Rebecca Romijn and Antonio Banderas. The film was shot in Paris and Los Angeles, and tells the story of a woman named Laure Ash who is trying to escape her past. During its premiere 20 years ago, the movie only got mixed reviews from critics. A review from Austin Chronicle wrote: “Banderas is fun as the paparazzo thrust into the eye of this storm — like the protagonists in Body Double or Blow-Out, he is drawn inadvertently in by

Los Angeles’ ubiquitous smog, freeways, beaches and palm trees — as well as its place in moviedom — were all influential elements as filmmaker Pierre Perifel and production designer Luc Desmarchelier huddled over where to set DreamWorks’ latest animation, “The Bad Guys,” in theaters April 22.
Based on the children’s book series by Aaron Blabey about a group of animals — a wolf, a snake, a shark, a tarantula and a piranha — that are always portrayed as criminal types but are trying hard to reform here, Desmarchelier says the script didn’t define where the action would be taking place. So when conceiving ideas, he looked at Chicago and New York as potential settings for the gang’s last heist.
But the production designer says he and Perifel ultimately landed on a reimagined version of the City of Angels because inspirations from cop and heist movies and TV shows had a gravitational pull.

Britney Spears wrested back another key to her newfound freedom on Wednesday: the power to sign her own estate planning documents.
The pop star was liberated from her nearly 14-year conservatorship on Nov. 12, but she still didn’t have the right to marshal her money around with her own signature until Judge Brenda Penny made the interim order at an afternoon hearing on Dec. 8.

Angel Olsen continues turning back the clock with her take on Men Without Hats’ “Safety Dance,” off her upcoming Eighties covers LP Aisles.

I imagine your summer plans didn’t go as expected, but in at least a few films in a new Criterion Channel series, some characters have it worse off than having to quarantine inside. Spoiler Alert: This article contains details from tonight’s season 1 finale episode of HBO’s Perry Mason.
It’s a mistrial and the court goes wild.
As rich and thrilling as this Great Depression noir HBO series was with sublime acting all around — especially Matthew Rhys’ turn as the P.I.-turned-attorney who overcompensates for his demons and mediocrity with his “eureka!” discoverings — the Perry Mason case of who killed baby Charlie Dodson was rather long-winded.
Sure, we weren’t fully convinced that Emily Dodson (Gayle Rankin) was completely innocent.
However, through various Byzantine rabbit holes explored by Mason, his gal Friday Della Street (Juliet Rylance), and his sidekick investigator Pete Strickland (Shea Whigham), our title character discovered that the Radiant Assembly of God was to blame for the kidnapping of Charlie, with Detective Ennis (Andrew Howard) orchestrating all the murders, down to taking the church’s Elder Seidel (Taylor Nichols) out.

Marisa Tomei has become a fixture of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Aunt May to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” Next up for the Oscar winner is a turn playing the mother of Pete Davidson’s character in Judd Apatow’s comedy “The King of Staten Island.” Why the sudden shift to mom characters? In a new interview with Collider, Tomei says she “really regrets starting down this road” when asked about the change.
“I really regret starting down this road and I really regret starting to do that,” Tomei said. “I was, you know, talked into it — not [‘King of Staten Island’], but I mean just that change — and I really always felt like, ‘Oh, I could play a lot of things.’ Honestly, [playing a mom is] probably more of a stretch than other things. Part of our on-going series, Notebook Soundtrack Mixes.Ryuichi Sakamoto can be found at home in a vast array of places. There is always a grounding within his music wherever you are in the world or, in his movie soundtracks, with whatever character you are following on screen. Subtle hints of Sakamoto’s signature sound always bubble to the surface. The notion of Eastern and Western sound distinctions do not matter to Sakamoto; instead, the play and fusion between these differing worlds and sounds has always been of more interest, to Sakamoto it’s all about the emotion produced—a universality that eventually moves the sound beyond place. The musician and composer needs no introduction. He is the master of so many musical universes: The Sakamoto whose work with Ymo and solo experimental productions shaped the future sounds of what would become electro and hip hop, an early pioneer of electronic music.

In Undine, the new film by Christian Petzold, a fable of love inspired by the aquatic nymph is unexpectedly layered with a detailed history of the urban development of modern Berlin. Or perhaps this history does make sense, since Berlin, like Washington, D.C., was built on a swamp, and what lies beneath each city always seems a latent, albeit usually metaphorical, threat. This strange mix of story and history should come as no surprise to fans of the director, who by now should be used to his frequently subtle layering of unresolved German political tensions into his sleek, cerebral revisions of genre storytelling. But in Undine this is not layered, it is literally said: the titular character is a historian and public guide for the city’s history, and we hear several abbreviated bursts of exposition combined with caressing camera movements across scale models of the city showing pre- and post-reunification edifices,...

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

“The Favourite” actress Olivia Colman will be voicing a guest character in an upcoming episode of “The Simpsons,” the cartoon’s executive producer James L. Brooks tweeted Friday.
“Just this second came from recording one of the best guest appearances in Simpson’s history. No kidding, I am flying,” Brooks said in the tweet. “Olivia Coleman playing the most down home femme fatale ever who attracts every man she’s ever met but falls hard, harder than she ever imagined, for Homer Simpson.”
Colman will voice a character named “Lily” in an episode titled “The 7 Beer Itch” that will air next spring, a Fox spokesperson told TheWrap.

Quentin Tarantino is fond of saying that no filmmakers make their best work at the end of their careers. When the quote originated, he was referring to Billy Wilder, but he could just as easily have been talking about Brian De Palma, who made a masterpiece in 2002’s Femme Fatale, but since then has struggled to get anything resembling his best work to screen. The Black Dahlia, Redacted, Passion, and now Domino, his latest and first feature since 2012, present a picture of a filmmaker whose finest days may be behind him. Those hoping that Domino might recapture the brilliance of Blow Out or Dressed to Kill would be better served revisiting Blow Out or Dressed to Kill.

Saban Films has unveiled the trailer for “Domino,” Brian De Palma’s first film since 2012’s “Passion.” Starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Carice van Houten — whom you might know as Jaime Lannister and Melisandre from “Game of Thrones,” respectively — it looks to be another stylized offering from the master behind “Carrie,” “Scarface,” and “Dressed to Kill.” Watch the trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis: “In a world wracked by terror and suspicion, Copenhagen police officer Christian (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) seeks justice for his partner’s murder by an Isis member named Imran. On the hunt for the killer, Christian and a fellow cop are unwittingly caught in a cat and mouse chase with a duplicitous CIA agent (Guy Pearce) who is using Imran as a pawn to trap other Isis members. Soon Christian is racing against the clock — not only seeking revenge, but to save his own life.”

Brian De Palma celebrates his 78th birthday on September 11, 2018. While his films have ranged from the sublime to the atrocious, there’s no denying the impact he’s had on cinema. In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
De Palma began his filmmaking career directing underground features shot on a shoestring, many of which starred a young Robert De Niro. He came into his own with the Hitchcock-inspired thriller “Sisters” (1973), starring Margot Kidder as a pair of killer Siamese twins. The Master of Suspense would serve as a muse to De Palma throughout his career, influencing such films as “Obsession” (1976), “Dressed to Kill” (1980), “Blow Out” (1980) and “Body Double” (1984) both in style and substance.
He enjoyed his first box office success with “Carrie” (1976), an adaptation of Stephen King’s chilling novel about a shy teenager (Sissy Spacek) with telekinesis.
