Jim Carrey is one of the most prolific comic actors in Hollywood. The actor changed the way comedy stars were looked at in the industry by giving solid hits in the ‘90s with films such as Ace Venture: Pet Detective, The Mask, Liar Liar, and more. Though he has done great work in dramas such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, he is known for his comedic work the most.
Carrey scored a trio of incredible hits including his breakthrough release Ace Ventura. After the success of the comic book adaptation The Mask, Carrey played the role of Lloyd Christmas in the comedy Dumb and Dumber. The actor was so committed to the role of a stupid limo driver that he chipped the cap off of his tooth to give him the iconic look.

The Shawshank Redemption director, Frank Darabont, bought the rights to Stephen King’s Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption for $5000 in 1987. It was technically their second collaboration after Darabont adapted King’s The Woman in the Room into a short film. Interestingly, King did not see the vision of the director with the film, as the author felt that his 96-page novella was not a cinematic work like Carrie or The Shining.

However, King was proved wrong as Darabont created one of the most critically acclaimed movies ever. King did see his vision eventually as he assured the director of one scene in the climax that concerned him.

As she strolls comfortably toward multiple Oscar nominations for “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig is on track to set several Academy Awards records tied to her age, gender and the movie’s financial success. In terms of more general achievements, perhaps the most impressive one in her reach is becoming the first filmmaker to have all of her initial three solo features contend for Best Picture. Over the past 95 years, many directors have had shots at earning that distinction and a few have come remarkably close, but none of their chances have been quite as strong as hers.
Since Gerwig did not produce her first two independently-directed films – “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2019) – and, per academy rules, cannot officially share in a “Barbie” Best Picture nomination due to her screen credit of “executive producer” (rather than the qualifying “producer” or “produced by”), she does not and will not soon have any bids...

Martin Landau is the Oscar-winning thespian who enjoyed one of the greatest late career renaissances in cinema history, hitting his stride in his 60’s and remaining active until his death in 2017. Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1928 in Brooklyn, New York, Landau first came to the attention of movie audiences with a villainous role in Alfred Hitchcock‘s “North by Northwest” (1959). He became a television star playing Rollin Hand on “Mission: Impossible,” for which he received three consecutive Emmy nominations as Best Drama Actor (1967-1968) and a Golden Globe victory in 1968.
After decades of bit roles in B-movies and guest spots on TV (including playing a bad guy on “Columbo”), Landau enjoyed a major career comeback thanks to Francis Ford Coppola‘s “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” (1988), for which he won the Golden Globe and earned his first...

The year was 2001, in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, many studios struggled to find the proper way to market and release their films while still being sensitive to what had just happened. Many films were moved off their original release dates to give the studios, and audiences, more time to figure out the proper way forward. One film, however, was deemed a slam dunk: a feel good story about a man who loses his memory and is taken in by the people of a small town when they assume him to be a long lost son and World War II hero, set against the backdrop of the Hollywood Communist witch hunt of the 1950’s from a respected Oscar nominated filmmaker and starring a lead actor who was in the midst of a dramatic left turn in his career with back to back Golden Globe wins for Best Actor.

Discounts, winter promotions, benefit performances and the absence from the roster of now-closed solid earner The Piano Lesson added up to a slide in Broadway box office for the week ending Feb. 5, down about 9 from the previous week to 23,518,702.
Total attendance was down only 5 through, with the smaller average ticket price (120.29 compared to the previous week’s 124.43) biting into receipts. Nineteen of the 22 shows on the week’s roster reported box office drops, though most shows filled up more than 90 of their seats.

The timeline for a successful video game franchise usually goes like this: The game comes out and soon becomes popular among players. Avid fans start creating content inspired by the game and their favorite characters, helping bring that IP into pop culture. There might be a movie or TV adaptation. And as more people are introduced to the game’s world, more fans are created, leading to more demand for derivative content. Et cetera, et cetera.
But the leaders at Liithos, a multimedia gaming studio led by former PlayStation executives, are about to do things a little differently with their first studio IP, Ashfall, which is set in a post-apocalyptic Pacific Northwest ravaged by climate change, civilian fighting and mutations caused by a dark energy. The series follows Ash Naranjo, a character who was born without arms and is given cyborg-like implants to help him save his family and homeland.

Frank Darabont created a heckuva conundrum for himself when his feature directing debut, "The Shawshank Redemption," wound up becoming one of the most beloved movies of all time. For starters, he joined an elite fraternity of filmmakers who'd hit the bullseye with a difficult-to-adapt Stephen King story. More troublesome, King had just launched into another prison yarn, one that begged to become a motion picture. One that fit Darabont like a bespoke suit.
"The Green Mile" was a publishing event in 1996. Between March and August, King released a new, slender volume imparting the tragedy of John Coffey, a gentle giant wrongfully consigned to Death Row for the rape and murder of two girls. Unlike "The Shawshank Redemption," this serialized story contained the kind of mystical elements one expects from a King novel. Coffey is not only the opposite of a killer, he is a saint possessed of healing powers. King...

That Peter Weir's 1998 film "The Truman Show" managed to claim as many accolades as it did was kind of extraordinary. It was nominated for three Academy Awards -- Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Screenplay -- and won numerous other awards from various other critical bodies. Part comedy, part high-concept sci-fi film, "The Truman Show" followed the everyday life of the good-natured everyman Truman Burbank (Jim Carrey) as he treks to and from work, makes small talk with his neighbors, and enjoys evenings with his wife Meryl (Laura Linney).
Unbeknownst to Truman, however, he is the lone subject of an elaborate, lifetime-long unscripted TV show watched by billions the world over. His hometown is completely enclosed in an enormous dome, and all the people he has interacted with for his entire life are being fed lines and scenes by the show's all-seeing director Christof (Ed Harris).

As a very strange edition of the festival draws to a close, our film critic predicts who will walk away with the Palme d’Or and other prizes – and awards his own alternative Braddies
So it actually happened – the Cannes film festival defiantly took place in the era of Covid, and two months later than usual, in sweltering July. More tourists, but fewer actual festival-attenders from the media. Some streets were eerily quiet and the legendary bar, Le Petit Majestic, usually packed with movie-world people, getting drunk, exchanging cards and crowding densely out into the street every night until three in the morning, was doing hardly any business.
Masks were worn throughout all films, though not on the hallowed red carpet, and every 48 hours we had to report to a special tent for Covid testing: it was not possible to enter the Palais without having the vital Qr code for “Negatif” on your phone.

The rubber-faced funnyman made Ace Ventura, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber in the same year. But as he prepares to publish his memoirs, we ask: was that as good as it got?
By and large, Jim Carrey either makes good films or very, very bad films. The latter includes mush such as The Majestic, comedic misfires such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and such dreary genre misfires as Dark Crimes. But it also includes The Number 23, a thriller in which Carrey becomes obsessed with a book that he forgot he wrote, about the number 23. The book was written by a man named Topsy Kretts. Say it out loud. That’s right: it sounds like “Top Secrets”. The Number 23 is a terrible film, but you can watch the heck out of it drunk.

Joining the podcast is Evan Cutler Wattles, a filmmaker in New York City who runs the impressive production company Silentface.
Our movies include the 2001 Frank Darabont flop The Majestic, the 2005 remake Fun With Dick And Jane, the 2007 thriller The Number 23 and, finally, the based-on-a-true-crime drama Dark Crimes.

When Frank Darabont’s feature film adaptation of Stephen King’sThe Shawshank Redemption was released in theaters in 1994, it didn’t do very well at the box office. But it was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars! Over the years the fanbase for the film has exploded, and it’s become a favorite of a lot of movie geeks.
This is one of those film that I can watch over and over again and never get tired of watching. In my opinion it’s a perfect film. I know a lot of people have never seen this movie on the big screen, and if you’re one of them, you’re going to get your chance!

Martin Landau would’ve celebrated his 91st birthday on June 20, 2019. The Oscar-winning thespian enjoyed one of the greatest late career renaissances in cinema history, hitting his stride in his 60’s and remaining active until his death in 2017. But how many of his title remain classics? In honor of his birthday, let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.

In the world of sad clowns, there are the ones who hide how much they’re crying on the inside, because they want to give the people what they want. And then there are the ones who let their inner darkness out as early and often as possible.

Movies about the blacklist aren’t common, probably because as Robert Vaughn wrote, the period produced no happy stories, ‘Only Victims.’ Robert de Niro, Annette Bening and George Wendt give a bite of immediacy to the way the blacklist upset careers and blighted lives. Few of us would like to be publicly branded an Enemy of the People, but doing so seems to be America’s number one spectator sport.

The latest Jim Carrey film entitled “Dark Crimes” casts him as a detective investigating the murder of a prominent businessman. The film was made in Poland and offers a dark subject matter and role for the once former stand-up comedian.
Carrey wanted to perform from a very young age and when he was just 10 years old wrote to “The Carol Burnett Show” offering his services as an impressionist. While his request was politely declined it would only be another decade before Carrey was all over television with his antic comedic act. He ultimately achieved the brass ring for comedians of this era when he got to appear on “The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson.” In 1984 the 22-year-old Carrey was cast as the lead in a TV series called “The Duck Factory” which was supposed to be a star-making vehicle for the actor. Arriving in the wake of her beloved goth mermaid extravaganza, “The Lure,” Agnieszka Smoczynska’s disappointingly unadventurous second feature begins much the same way as her first. A mysterious woman surfaces from the underground darkness of modern Poland, grabbing our attention as she stumbles into society. But where the twin sirens in Smoczynska’s debut emerged from a fairy tale, the lost and confused heroine of “Fugue” materializes from the shadows of an unaccountable two-year absence. Her name — she thinks — is Alicja (screenwriter Gabriela Muskala), and the camera follows her as she walks out of a Warsaw subway tunnel in an atomic blonde trench coat, climbs onto the busy platform, and casually pees all over the floor.
Memory loss is one of the oldest plot devices in the world, which makes it ripe for some kind of reinvention. The opening minutes of “Fugue” not only suggest that we’re in...

Jim Carrey proved his acting range in the late 90s and 2000s. We salute the likes of The Truman Show, The Cable Guy and Man On The Moon.
You know you're a fan of something when that fandom is put to the test. Did you stick with Community when Dan Harmon wasn't writing it? During the barren 90s did you cling onto the hope that Doctor Who would return and be fantastic? Those moments when your patience and perseverance are tested are what make the privilege of being a fan important.

Filmmaker Garry Marshall has died at the age of 81.
The Bronx-born director/producer was also an acclaimed writer and character actor. He began work as a joke writer in the 1960s before making the jump to television where he co-created "The Odd Couple" and went on to create "Happy Days," "Laverne and Shirley," "Joanie Loves Chachi" and "Mork and Mindy" in the 1970s and early 1980s.
Also in the 1980s he made the jump to directing with "The Flamingo Kid" his first hit. It was the one-two punch of megahits "Beaches" and "Pretty Woman" that made him a household name. Other notable hits include the two "The Princess Diaries" features, "Runaway Bride," "The Other Sister," "Georgia Rule" and more recently three holiday-themed ensemble rom-coms capped off by this year's "Mother's Day".

Bryan Cranston stars as Dalton Trumbo in a biting drama about the 1940s screenwriter blacklisted for his allegiance to the left
The collision of American entertainment and anti-communism in the 1940s and 50s has inspired a dizzying array of movies, both fictional and factual. Time and again, Hollywood has returned to a subject that offers a heady cocktail of drama, politics and nostalgic showbusiness intrigue; from Irwin Winkler’s Guilty By Suspicion (1991), which cast Robert De Niro as a film-maker torn between losing work and naming names, to George Clooney’s Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), which revisited TV journalist Edward R Murrow’s on-air battles with McCarthy, via Frank Darabont’s whimsical The Majestic (2001), in which Jim Carrey’s amnesiac screenwriter winds up restoring a small-town cinema after being hounded out of Tinseltown as an anti-war “red”.

Robert Kirkman likes to describe The Walking Dead as a zombie movie that never ends. But to my eyes, the most interesting thing about the show is how it's spent five seasons fluttering between different storytelling modes. The show lacks a single setting and makes a point of killing off at least a couple key cast members every season. This can make The Walking Dead feel unwieldy or unfocused, but it also means that there's an exciting state of constant flux underpinning the show's basic head-crushing thrills. I've always said that original showrunner Frank Darabont most clearly viewed his version...

With a potential comeback on the cards for Jim Carrey, Rob looks through the hidden gems of his career.
Feature
Alrighty then. To get straight to the point – Jim Carrey’s career hasn’t been up to much lately has it? Certainly as leading man, at least. His last big-hitter was 2009’s A Christmas Carol, while his most recent leading role was 2011’s Mr Popper’s Penguins.
His latest performance outside of cameos was an interesting part in Kick Ass 2 though, a promising turn which left many audience-members wanting more from his character. With the trailer dropping recently for Dumb And Dumber To as well, the hints of a comeback for the iconic performer have continued to grow.
There’s been more positivity towards Dumb And Dumber To in comments than we might have expected (although this welcoming response was far from unanimous), which is undeniably a positive sign for the fledgling star.

After the curious case of Edge Of Tomorrow’s surprise critical popularity, Rob investigates a strange Hollywood happening…
Feature
The release of Edge Of Tomorrow - which opened in the Us this past weekend, following its bow in the UK a week earlier - has brought, not for the first time, a strange Hollywood trend to light. And it's this: do we trust big stars to make decent movies anymore?
Many people, this writer included, took a lot of convincing to venture out and see Tom Cruise in a hugely expensive sci-fi spectacular (notwithstanding the fact that Cruise has fine form in science fiction). The film in question, Edge Of Tomorrow, is directed by Doug Liman of The Bourne Identity, and based on a graphic novel with a cool title. So surely this should have been a movie which audiences were enthusiastically anticipating? Yet It didn’t seem that way,...

So HBO is coming to Amazon. This is good news, I think, insofar as anything that makes the great shows of the HBO Renaissance available to more people is good news. I’m a TV obsessive of a certain age — definition of “a certain age” freely covering anyone who remembers when “TV is better than movies” was an argument that you had to make, when TV-on-dvd was the technological forefront, and when the notion of “downloading” a TV show didn’t seem needlessly wasteful of valuable hard drive space.

Our voyage through history's underappreciated films arrives at the year 2001, and a vintage year for lesser-seen gems...
Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke may have seen 2001 as the year we'd head off to meet alien intelligences in the depths of space, but in reality, its cinematic landscape was dominated by fantasy rather than extra-terrestrials. Rowling and Tolkien dominated the box office, with Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone and The Fellowship Of The Ring earning almost $1bn each, while Monsters, Inc and Shrek thrilled old and young audiences alike.
At the other end of the spectrum of success, 2001 was such a vintage year for movies that we had to whittle our usual selection of 25 films down from an initial selection of more than 40. This is why the decision was made - with heavy heart - to exclude some of our favourite films,...

This is Holden's first high-profile role following her exit from "The Walking Dead" earlier this year. The actress previously worked with "Dumb and Dumber" star Jim Carrey in 2001's "The Majestic."
Production has already kicked off on the follow-up to the 1994 comedy, set to take place (and be released) 20 years after the original. Jeff Daniels and a toothless Carrey will reprise their roles.

Laurie Holden, best known for roles on both "The Walking Dead" and "The X-Files," has taken the female lead in Bobby and Peter Farrelly's upcoming comedy sequel, Dumb and Dumber To . Deadline reports that she'll join the previously-announced Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Kathleen Turner and Brady Bluhm. Holden, who previous big screen work includes The Mist and (also with Jim Carrey) The Majestic , will play a villain by the name of Adele Pichlow, who seeks to use Harry and Lloyd as scapegoats for her evil scheme. Dumb and Dumber To is going into production shortly with both Carrey and Daniels returning. (Photo Credit: Nikki Nelson / WENN.com)...
