In 2019, Sandra Oh simultaneously received her seventh and eighth acting Emmy nominations for “Killing Eve” (drama lead) and “Saturday Night Live” (comedy guest). Five years later, her performance bid total is set to reach an even dozen thanks to her respective lead and supporting performances in the telefilm “Quiz Lady” and the limited series “The Sympathizer.” Earning TV academy recognition for these two roles would make her the eighth woman to compete for both possible limited program acting awards at once.
In “Quiz Lady,” which premiered on Hulu last November, Oh plays Jenny Yum, a vivacious yet reckless woman who reunites with her estranged younger sister (Awkwafina) to resolve their mother’s gambling debts. “The Sympathizer,” which began airing on HBO in April, features her in the role of Sofia Mori, a 1970s Japanese American secretary who becomes entangled with a communist spy (Hoa Xuande).

An actress receiving two Primetime Emmy nominations in a single year may seem like a rare occurrence, but it is actually fairly common. In fact, there have been 65 instances since 1967, including two last year involving Aidy Bryant and Jean Smart. What is uncommon is a woman earning double recognition within the same genre, with Bryant being one of only a dozen to ever be so honored (discounting guest categories). Now, Toni Collette has a shot at becoming the lucky 13th.
For her work on the two limited series “The Staircase” and “Pieces of Her,” Collette could be nominated this year as both a featured player and a lead. On the former show, she plays Kathleen Peterson, the subject of a real early 2000s murder case that ended in the conviction of her husband, Michael. Her potential supporting notice for playing Peterson would be her third in the category following bids...

My Opioid Teacher: Garcia Tackles Addiction in Hokey Reunion with Close
Films dealing with drug addiction may have evolved considering the changing landscape of substance abuse, but a historical pratfall has often included an aura of emotional exploitation, particularly in examples from well-heeled sources. Rodrigo Garcia throws his hat into the ring with his latest feature, Four Good Days, co-written by Eli Saslow and headlined by Glenn Close, who assisted in bolstering the director’s repute in early films like Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her (2000) and Nine Lives (2005).

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

Hollywood has no shortage of talented composers crafting mostly serviceable tunes for the next young adult literary adaptation or prestige awards tearjerker. But for every auteur like Hans Zimmer and John Williams, you have musical yes men pounding out ominous notes in anticipation of the next horror movie jump scare or making ratatat noise to underscore a superhero chase scene. The film world screams for diverse sounds, but is often left wanting when scores become interchangeable to feed the Hollywood machine. The current film decade is no different from any other in terms of talent, mediocrity, and ingenuity, but could always use a boost from professionals who bring specificity to the table. These five forgotten or diminished artists, each among them with varied yet singular skills, are screaming to be brought back into the Hollywood fold to create their signature sounds.

Mexican director Rodrigo Garcia has directed a variety of independent films, including the award-winning "Nine Lives "; the three-time Academy Award-nominated feature "Albert Nobbs, " starring Glenn Close; and "Mother and Child, " starring Annette Bening, Naomi Watts and Samuel L. Jackson. In 2000, his first film as a writer and director, "Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her," won the Un Certain Regard Award at the Cannes Film Festival. His Sundance film "Last Days in the Desert" stars Ewan McGregor as Jesus Christ. What it's about: After several weeks fasting and praying in the wilderness, Jesus meets a family that lives in the desert, and becomes entangled in their problems. What it's really about: The influence of fathers on sons, and the sons' struggles to make their own life. Biggest challenge: The low budget was challenging, but I will admit that only with some embarrassment, since I'm sure it was...

Ewan McGregor has signed on to star in "Last Days in the Desert," written and directed by Rodrigo Garcia ("Albert Nobbs"). He'll actually be doing double duty: McGregor will play both a holy man and a demon, who together are journeying through a desert when they discover a family in dire circumstances. Also (!), recent Asc winner Emmanuel Lubezki is set to shoot the film. Yup, we're on board. This is a reuniting for Garcia and Lubezki, who many years ago made "Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her," the Cannes Un Certain Regard winner in 2000. "Last Days in the Desert" will begin principal photography in the Southern California desert this month. Tye Sheridan ("Mud," "The Tree of Life") has also been announced to star, as the child of the desert family. Veteran Brit star Ciaran Hinds and Ayelet Zurer ("Angels and Demons") are attached to play the mother and father roles.

Title: Albert Nobbs Director: Rodrigo Garcia (‘Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her,’ TV’s ‘In Treatment’) Starring: Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson (‘Kick-Ass,’ ‘Nowhere Boy’) and Janet McTeer (‘Tumbleweeds’) An actress remaining connected to a character she portrayed 30 years ago in a play that features a simplistic story is a rarity in Hollywood. But Glenn Close has done just that with her title role in her new film, ‘Albert Nobbs.’ Despite garnering mainstream attention in such films as ‘Fatal Attraction’ and ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ since she played Albert on stage, the Academy Award-nominated actress convincingly reentered the character’s mindset in the new drama. Glenn Close's publicists must have been working round the clock these last few months. A highly likely Best Actress Oscar contender for her performance in Albert Nobbs, Close has already received the San Sebastian International Film Festival's Donostia Lifetime Achievement Award and, a couple of days ago, the Hollywood Film Festival's Hollywood Career Achievement Award. Now comes the announcement that Close will be taking home another Career Achievement Award, this time at the Palm Springs International Film Festival's awards gala ceremony on January 7, 2012, at the Palm Springs Convention Center. In Albert Nobbs, Close plays a 19th-century Irishwoman who passes as a (strange-looking) man in order to eke out a living in those difficult times. In the past, the Academy has often shown a penchant for cross-dressing actors, e.g., Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot, Julie Andrews in Victor Victoria, Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie, John Lithgow The World According to Garp,...

It’s been a very long time since we’ve had the honor of seeing Glenn Close command the big screen front-and-center. If not for Damages, her starring, 5-time Oscar-nominated work would seem like a different life. For over a decade her career has been overrun with guest roles and being only one of many in ensemble pieces. Though she often commands these small glimpses, especially in indie films like Heights and The Safety of Objects, the Close we once knew – offering mainstream fatal attractions, dangerous liaisons, Shakespeare and newspapers – has been dormant ... until now. Under the eye of oft-collaborator Rodrigo Garcia (Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, Nine Lives) Close thrives as scribe and star of Albert Nobbs, elevating a period piece about...

This is the last of my lists of the best films of 2010, and the hardest to name. Call it the Best Art Films. I can't precisely define an Art Film, but I knew I was seeing one when I saw these. I could also call them Adult Films, if that term hadn't been devalued by the porn industry. These are films based on the close observation of behavior. They are not mechanical constructions of infinitesimal thrills. They depend on intelligence and empathy to be appreciated.
They also require acting of a precision not necessary in many mass entertainments. They require directors with a clear idea of complex purposes. They require subtleties of lighting and sound that create a self-contained world. Most of all, they require sympathy. The directors care for their characters, and ask us to see them as individuals, not genre emblems. That requires us to see ourselves as individual viewers,...

Below is the first image of Glenn Close from the set of her new film Albert Nobbs. Close looks incredible (and scary. . .hide your rabbits) as a 19th century Irish woman who cross-dresses in order to get ahead in Dublin society.
The film, directed by Rodrigo García (Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her, Nine Lives) is an adaptation of the 1982 play "The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs" in which Close got her professional start in the titular role. I'll be interested to see if the plot will be updated at all to accommodate the 28-year age difference in its lead. Also appearing in the film are Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland) and Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors, your naughty dreams), who are both rather androgynous actors themselves. If they had asked me which pillow-lipped/crazy-eyed Irishman I would prefer to see, I would have picked that other one,...

Glenn Close got back in front of movie cameras two days ago. Albert Nobbs has just started filming. She plays a cross dressing woman in 1890's Ireland.

Barring the movie going to cable (these things happen) of failing to get distribution (these things happen, too) will Glenn Close finally be back in the Oscar race next year at this time? She was last nominated for 1988's Dangerous Liaisons over twenty years ago. Since that Oscar regular heyday (5 nominations all within the 1980s) she's gone on to win 3 Emmys, 1 SAG and 2 Golden Globes for television roles.
The film is directed by Rodrigo García (pictured left with Close) who specializes in the actresses, most famously in television or in films like Mother & Child, Nine Lives and Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her. We hope he finds new inner fire as a writer/director this time. The talent with actors...

Back for its third year (see the 2010 edition) and bigger than ever, today kicks off the first in a fifteen-part look at the various cinematic releases hitting the U.S. in 2011. Each 'part' contains brief descriptions and editorial opinion/analysis of varying length covering twenty films. Expect the remaining ones to go up between now and the first major releases in mid-January.
Like all cinematic lists set within a timeframe, there's some overlap. Some films here have already opened worldwide but have yet to hit the U.S., some upcoming films you'd expect to be here aren't because they're either still in development or have already announced 2012 release dates, some were on last year's list but got delayed so have been included again (but with all new analysis).
I confined my list to films that have either set 2011 release dates or had begun/completed production, and only films that have...

Chicago – “Mother and Child” is an intense exploration of the various stages of motherhood, through the performances of Annette Bening, Naomi Watts and Samuel L. Jackson. Leading the eclectic cast through their paces is director Rodrigo Garcia.
Garcia, the son of famed author Gabriel García Márquez, has carved his own artistic niche in a career directing both prestige television and film. Besides sheparding the HBO’s favorites “The Sopranos,” “Six Feet Under” and “Carnivále” at various points, Garcia also produced and help develop the HBO adaptation of “In Treatment.”
His films are characterized by their human relationship elements, including “Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her’ [2000] and “Nine Lives,” which Garcia also wrote. Mother and Child is his fourth film directed from his own screenplay.

I love the work of writer-director Rodrigo Garcia, and bemoan the fact that more people haven’t seen his female-centric anthology films Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her and Nine Lives. It’s evident that actors are familiar with his efforts, however, because the best and the brightest want to work with him. For Mother and Child, he has narrowed his focus to three parallel (and overlapping) stories, and once again he’s attracted great actresses to star: Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, and Kerry Washington. The theme of the movie is adoption. Bening’s character gave up a child in infancy,…...

Rodrigo Garcia’s latest film, Mother and Child, opening tomorrow in the U.S. and Canada, is that rarest of rarities these days: a serious film about motherhood that does not resort to clichés and stereotypes but explores what is for many women the central experience of their lives without either denigrating it or dismissing it. The director’s work, which here encompasses screenwriting as well, has long been characterized by intensely personal storytelling and by a certain expressiveness he stands aside to let his actors communicate to audiences. “I think if the script works and you’ve cast the right person,” Garcia says, “you’re probably well on your way to the performance working.” From TV series including Big Love, Six Feet Under, Carnivàle, and The Sopranos, to films such as Nine Lives and Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, Garcia has shown, again and again,...

A web of coincidence and unseen connections nets together a disparate group of Los Angelenos in, well, a lot of movies over the last few years. That description fits Mother And Child as well, a film produced by Alejandro González Iñárritu, the director behind such template-setting everything’s-connected films as 21 Grams and Babel. But in other respects, Mother And Child doesn’t fit the usual pattern. Writer/director Rodrigo Garcia (Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her, Nine Lives) stays away from Iñárritu’s hard ironies, bringing a more delicate touch to Mother And ...

It seems fitting that writer-director Rodrigo García's latest feminine-charged drama, "Mother and Child" (opening May 7), would not have been conceived had a pregnancy not delayed the production years ago. The film's star, Oscar-nominated powerhouse Naomi Watts, became pregnant with her second child and, instead of scrambling to recast her role, García decided to halt filming. "We did an initial offer to Annette [Bening], and for dates or personal reasons, she could not do it. So that was disappointing, but then after Naomi had her baby, Annette became available again. So that was definitely very lucky," says García. "I did think of it as a good omen."García has carved out his own genre with thoughtful stories surrounding solid, mostly female ensembles that have included Glenn Close, Robin Wright, Lisa Gay Hamilton, and Holly Hunter. The son of Nobel Prize–winning author Gabriel García Márquez has a gift for writing the...

This Rodrigo Garcia fellow really loves making these ensemble, multi-story, multi-character films centered on women – from his 2000 debut, Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, to Ten Tiny Love Stories, to Nine Lives, to his latest, Mother And Child, a drama centered around three women: A 50-year-old woman, the daughter she gave up for adoption 35 years ago, and an African American woman looking to adopt a child of her own.
The film, which costars the names above, plus Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Tatyana Ali, S Epartha Merkeson, Lisa Gay Hamilton, David Morse, Jimmy Smits, and others, played the festival circuit last year, including the Sundance Film Festival this year, and is scheduled for a May release.

Browsing over reactions to yesterday’s casting news on Tyler Perry’s adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, as well as renewed reactions to the project overall, not just on this blog, but all over the web – I noticed a trend of assumptions being made about the project that I’d like to address here – specifically about the nature of the adaptation, and its production/release schedule.

What's that old cable TV movie called, Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her? Sometimes that applies to movies in general. For example, the upcoming crime caper, Takers, does not look like it will have a major impact on the industry.
Here's why we say that: It's from Screen Gems, and expecting a great film from Screen Gems is kind of like expecting the greatest meal of your life at Carl's Jr. Then, Takers was pushed from spring into summer. Why isn't that a good move? Because Screen Gems has put it up against Robin Hood, one week after Iron Man 2. The second weekend in May is usually a graveyard for films like this. Witness Next Day Air, Delta Farce, Georgia Rule, and Just My Luck, each released in this same slot over the past few years.

Mother and Child
Opens: 2010
Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington
Director: Rodrigo Garcia
Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.
Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.
The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not...

It seemed appropriate that "The Young Victoria" closed out Toronto this year, considering that the festival turned out to be a coronation for women in film, in addition to being a celebration its host metropolis (a series of pre-screening clips from Toronto-based films honored the city's 175th anniversary). Besides showcasing upcoming femme-centric fall releases as "Bright Star," "An Education," "Whip It!" and "Fish Tank," the festival ended up bestowing audience awards upon the coming-of-age drama "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" and the doc "The Topp Twins," which focuses on a pair of lesbian sisters and musicians who have been entertaining New Zealand for the past three decades. (A full list of winners can be found here.)
