Hollywood often pushes actors into unusual situations, and Amy Smart also had a similar experience while working on the 2003 film The Battle of Shaker Heights. Starring Smart, alongside Shia Labeouf and Elden Henson, the film follows two teenage friends who devise historical battle tactics to confront school bullies, however, complications arise when one of them develops feelings for his friend’s older sister.

Smart portrayed the older sister Tabby, and the 15-year-old Labeouf played Kelly, who becomes infatuated with Tabby and shares a kiss with her in one of the scenes. Recollecting the experience, the Just Friends star admitted feeling uncomfortable kissing a teenager for the film.

Mayim Bialik is sharing her thoughts about the harrowing allegations in Investigation Discovery’s Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV docuseries.
On a recent episode of her The Breakdown podcast, former child actress Jenna von Oÿ noted how women’s alleged experiences at Nickelodeon while working under Dan Schneider — detailed in the five-part series — weren’t much different than “things that I heard about other sets during our time.”
The Big Bang Theory alum added in response, “Women being berated in the writers room is something that was just like — I’m sorry — it was considered in — I mean, I hate to say it, — it’s considered par for the course. I will say I do not believe that happened in our writers room … and there were things that we all thought were Ok to even joke about, which now we’d be mortified.”

Amid new scrutiny on child performers in the wake of the Quiet on Set docuseries, former Disney actress Christy Carlson Romano is opening up about the moments when she and her mother had to speak up on the set of Disney show Even Stevens, which Romano starred in as a teen.
In a conversation on Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown podcast, which also included Bialik’s fellow Blossom alum Jenna von Oÿ, Bialik asked the former child stars about times in which they had to assert themselves during production and what “worked well” in managing to be heard.
Romano noted that there were a couple of times when she was able to have a say in the production choices. One was when writers would come to her to draw from her own experiences while writing for her character, Ren. “They would be like, ‘Hey, you just turned 16. Are boys interesting to you?...

Former Disney Channel star Christy Carlson Romano says she has not watched Investigation Discovery’s docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV and has not participated in similar ventures because the filmmakers are typically “outsiders” and “trauma tourists.”
The former Disney Channel star says on this week’s upcoming episode of the podcast Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown that ID and other filmmakers had previously approached her about appearing in documentaries about kids TV.
“I’ve chosen not to speak about this with anybody, including ID, who originally came to me looking to see if I’d be interested in a doc like this,” said Romano, who has starred in Disney series Kim Possible and Even Stevens in the early 2000s. “I don’t know if it was this doc [Quiet on Set]. Joe Flaherty, a writer and performer on the influential and beloved sketch comedy series Sctv and a series regular on Freaks and Geeks, died Monday following a brief illness. He was 82.
His death was announced by his daughter Gudrun Flaherty, who said in a press statement, “After a brief illness, he left us yesterday, and since then, I’ve been struggling to come to terms with this immense loss. Dad was an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and an unwavering passion for movies from the ’40s and ’50s. McKenna Grace reprises her lead role as Phoebe in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which led the weekend box office with $45 million. At 17 she is not yet a household name, but she laid some groundwork early: At age six she had a supporting role on the Disney Channel sitcom “Crash & Bernstein.” Later she received an Emmy nomination for her work in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and portrayed the younger selves for the leads in movies like “I, Tonya” and “Captain Marvel.”
Her “Ghostbusters” co-star is Finn Wolfhard, who made his debut at 13 in CW’s “Supernatural” before starring in “Stranger Things” and “It.” Zendaya, star of “Dune: Part Two,” got her start as a Disney Channel regular. Her co-star, Oscar-nominated Austin Butler, cut his teeth at Nickelodeon.

There isn’t an ideal place for the public to discuss child abuse allegations, but for now, TikTok might be our best option. That’s a precarious position for young entertainers and their advocates to be in as the U.S. government once again moves to ban the social media platform.
On Sunday, March 17, ID Network’s “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” began its deep dive into the toxic workplace allegations and child abuse reports that emerged out of Nickelodeon following Dan Schneider’s ousting in 2018. Within hours of the docuseries’ premiere, dozens of press outlets and at-home viewers started posting TikTok supercuts of the most damning moments from the first two episodes.
Tagging “Quiet on Set,” Stephanie Matto from “90 Day Fiancé” even made a video discussing her personal experiences with Schneider and the competitive nature of TV parents at Nickelodeon from when she was a young actress.

Twenty years ago, tween-girl cinema thrived. Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, and Amanda Bynes kicked off the junior rom-com eras -- bringing their Disney and Nickelodeon fans along for the ride. Big-screen coming-of-age stories, family sagas, and whimsical made-for-television movies defined youth culture in 2003. Pop music became more accessible to children. Bright colors and Y2K fashion arrived in full force. Kids were paying attention to the media and products advertised to them.
As a person who turned nine in '03, I vividly remember this era of family films. They were hopeful, playful, and rife with young characters seeking adventures. I'll never forget when my sister and I saw our first movies on DVD instead of VHS: "The Lizzie McGuire Movie" and "What a Girl Wants." For millennial fans, Hilary Duff's Italian excursion has been on repeat as a literal soundtrack of our lives. Amanda Bynes' British battle of the debutantes sharpened our rebellious side.

Shia Labeouf grew up in front of cameras. The actor made his acting debut at age 12 in an episode of "Caroline in the City" before getting a main role in the Disney Channel sitcom "Even Stevens," which lasted for 65 episodes and a movie. Say what you will about his personal life, his stunts, or his career, but he still was the star of an "Indiana Jones" movie, for better and worse. But before he played Indy's son, he was a child actor, with all the problems that come with the territory.
The reality of child stars is a difficult one, as people like Jennette McCurdy ("iCarly") have reminded us in recent times. Abuse by loved ones and by a cold, calculating industry aren't out of the ordinary, unfortunately, and Labeouf used his own experiences as a child actor to write the pseudo-autobiographical Sundance darling "Honey Boy."

Twenty years ago, “Kim Possible” creators Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle introduced the world to a high school cheerleader who saved the world in her spare time alongside her best friend Ron Stoppable and his naked mole rat, Rufus.
The series turned the damsel in distress trope on its head, putting a heroine on the small screen at a time when most of the world-saving characters we knew were men (and they still are). Schooley and McCorkle told TheWrap that the original inspiration for the iconic character came from their daughters.

Shia Labeouf began his acting career as a teenager on the Disney Channel series “Even Stevens.” He would be nominated for a Young Artist Award in 2001 and won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2003. This story about Quinta Brunson first appeared in The Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
In a TV world increasingly crowded with options, it’s harder than ever to not only cut through the noise but become a genuine hit. Yet Quinta Brunson’s sitcom, “Abbott Elementary,” managed exactly that when it debuted in early 2022 — not on a streaming platform or premium cable network where you’d expect to find an internet-bred comic, but on ABC.
Brunson plays Janine, an optimistic young teacher at an underfunded Philadelphia elementary school. Janine isn’t naïve; she knows that the world won’t always play fair with her or her students. But even when the school and the system around her seem completely broken, she hopes so badly that she can find a way to carve out a space for her students to be their best selves.
