TV takes on familiar IP isn’t new these days, although the quality of those series runs the gamut. For every show like Prime Video‘s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Dead Ringers,” there are others, like Paramount+‘s “Sexy Beast,” that are utterly forgettable. In short, IP-turned-tv varies in quality, but that’s not stopping Warner Bros. from remaking one of Zack Snyder‘s biggest films into series form.

A “300” TV series adaptation is in early development at Warner Bros. Television, Variety has learned from sources.
Exact plot details are still being worked out, but sources say that the show would serve as a prequel to the 2006 film. No writer or platform is currently attached to the project.
Deals are still being negotiated, but Zack Snyder, who directed and co-wrote “300,” is in talks to direct and executive produce the series. Deborah Snyder, who executive produced “300,” would also return as an executive producer under her and Zack’s Stone Quarry production banner, with Stone Quarry’s Wesley Coller also on board. Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, and Bernie Goldmann — all of whom were producers on the film — are likewise in talks to return.
Reps for Wbtv declined to comment.

Michael Head stars in this less than convincing story of a London crime lord and his associates
There was a period in the Cool Britannia days when you couldn’t throw a brick at a cinema in the UK without hitting a British gangster movie with a castful full of dodgy geezers blagging their way around an underground scene full of drugs and farfetched capers. Some were ludicrously entertaining creations of actual working-class talent, such as Nick Love’s The Business, others transcended genre pigeonholing to work their way into various top critics’ lists (such as Jonathan Glazer’s Sexy Beast), and still others were Guy Ritchie movies. There were hundreds of less high-profile efforts too, destined for VHS or DVD, but each having somehow found funding.
These days the British gangster flick is no longer flavour of the week, or month, and there’s something appealingly bullish about attempts to make these films now.

Oli. We did Sitting Target together. I knew him before that and we had a good time together. The trouble was he became inclined to be a bit of a bully when he drank, but he was charming most of the time. Richard was terrific. I think he was very underrated when we did Villain and I played his bisexual driver fixer, Wolfie. There’s the infamous scene where we’re about to get it on and he looked at me and said: “I’m very glad you’re playing this part.” I said: “Really, Richard?” He said: “Yes, because you remind me of Elizabeth.

It’s time to break out the corn cob pipe, the can of spinach and maybe consider whether we’re scrapping the barrel of I.P. and brands, people. Variety reports that Chernin Entertainment (the folks behind the modern “Planet of The Apes” franchise) and King Features are partnering to develop a brand new live-action feature take on the classic cartoon character “Popeye The Sailor Man.” An iconic and beloved cartoon character that first debuted in comic strips in the late 1920s and some animated shorts in the 1930s, Popeye would eventually be best remembered for his catchy theme song and the cans of spinach he eats in moments of distress to receive a sudden burst of super-human levels of energy, strength, and speed and defeat his foes.

The live-action movies based on comic book storylines or animated characters are either hugely successful or a massive disappointment as we have witnessed in the recent adaptations. It seems like we’re all set to witness another adaptation of a very popular cartoon character, as it was recently announced that Michael Caleo is allegedly working on a live-action adaptation of Popeye the Sailor Man.
Popeye the Sailor Man Popeye the Sailor Man is getting another live-action after 40 years
Popeye is one of the most popular cartoon characters the world has ever seen and many generations grew up watching the animated series based on the popular sailor man who gained superhuman strength by eating Spinach. The character even celebrated its 95th anniversary earlier this year as it was first released in the 1929 comic Thimble Theater.

The 1980 Robert Altman film Popeye, which gave Robin Williams his first starring role, is kind of a divisive film. It made an admirably grand attempt at adapting the cartoon into a live-action hyper-reality. Not unlike Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy. However, many find the Popeye film hard to swallow and the film was panned by critics. The 1920s cartoon tough guy who likes his spinach would remain somewhat relevant as a mascot here and there. In the 90s, the now-defunct regional theater chain, Dickinson Theaters, had featured the Sailor Man, his girlfriend Olive Oyl and even Bluto in some ads and some promotional merchandise. However, for the most part, Popeye is mostly known to the masses through reputation.
The character would celebrate his 95th anniversary this year and Variety now reports that there will now be a new live-action adaptation of the Popeye character set for release. According to Variety,...

Legendary comic book and cartoon character Popeye the Sailor is once again coming to the big screen, as Chernin Entertainment and King Features officially confirm that a big-budged live-action adaptation is in the works. This will be the first time that the character has been revisited in a live-action format since the late Robin Williams played Popeye in the 1980 movie. This has been confirmed exclusively by Variety, as the magazine reported on the movie being in the works.
As stated, Chernin Entertainment and King Features are working on the movie and will probably be in charge of its production and distribution, securing a worldwide theatrical distribution. So far, there aren’t many details available, but the movie is supposedly going to be a big-budget feature with Michael Caleo attached as the screenwriter as of the time of writing. February––particularly its third week––is all about romance. Accordingly the Criterion Channel got creative with their monthly programming and, in a few weeks, will debut Interdimensional Romance, a series of films wherein “passion conquers time and space, age and memory, and even death and the afterlife.” For every title you might’ve guessed there’s a wilder companion: Alan Rudolph’s Made In Heaven, Soderbergh’s remake, and Resnais’ Love Unto Death. Mostly I’m excited to revisit Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth, a likely essential viewing before Megalopolis.
February also marks Black History Month, and Criterion’s series will include work by Shirley Clarke (also subject of a standalone series), Garrett Bradley, Cheryl Dunye, and Julie Dash, while movies by Sirk, Minnelli, King Vidor, and Lang play in “Gothic Noir.” Greta Gerwig gets an “Adventures in Moviegoing” and can be seen in Mary Bronstein’s Yeast,...

As a filmmaker and storyteller, Jonathan Glazer has made a career tossing audiences into minefields of morality without a life raft, challenging those at home to sit in ultimate discomfort and better understand characters who, on paper, would typically be avoided. "Sexy Beast" turned Ben Kingsley into one of cinema's greatest villains, "Birth" sees Nicole Kidman questioning all of her morals after a 10-year-old boy claims to be the reincarnation of her dead husband, and people are still trying to fully wrap their heads around the alien skinwalker tale of "Under the Skin." But it's his latest film, "The Zone of Interest," that many are finding to be his most difficult to process yet.

Everyone remember filmmaker Jonathan Glazer’s 2000 British cult crime drama and debut feature, “Sexy Beast” with Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone? Of course you do, it’s a stone cold classic even if it is relatively straightforward compared to Glazer’s latter day more enigmatic masterpieces like “Under the Skin” (2013), and “The Zone of Interest” (the latter of which we named the Best Film of 2023).

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
In all honesty, the films of 2023 should take a backseat to the images we are seeing every day in Gaza, where journalists and average citizens have been recording and documenting a daily assault on their homes and livelihoods by the Idf. Whatever fakery we watched and enjoyed in the cinema this year should always be kept in perspective in importance with images that are real and actually happening right now. The Palestinians who have documented these important images have been targeted and killed with intent and purpose to silence what their photos and videos are showing and saying.
List of journalists who have been killed.

January is a time for new beginnings all around, for TV networks to reinvent themselves just as much as the people in the audience. Netflix is scratching the “Narcos” itch with “Griselda”; Peacock enters puzzling prequel territory with “Ted”; Prime Video will debut the star-studded “Expats”; and “True Detective” is so back, starring Jodie Foster. This month also means the premiere of “The Brothers Sun” starring Michelle Yeoh, Disney and Marvel’s previously delayed “Echo,” a serialized version of “Sexy Beast,” and “Masters of the Air...

Jonathan Glazer was, by his own admission, a little lost. The writer-director behind Sexy Beast and Under the Skin had been chasing an unformed idea for a movie for years, uncertain of where he would go with the story or what he wanted to say about the subject. “It wasn’t even an idea, really,” the filmmaker says, thinking back on the staggering amount of reading and research that took up the better part of his 2010s, as he sat in a small restaurant booth in New York. “It was more of a feeling.

The 2023-2024 primetime television season looked nothing like previous years, with reruns, unscripted shows, and international imports populating broadcast networks’ lineups. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, though undeniably justified, took quite a toll on all the networks. Fortunately, the strikes have been settled, production has begun on nearly every new and returning series, and the midseason January lineup hints that things are slowly returning to normal.
Here’s a look at the shows scheduled to launch their new season – or series – premieres in January 2024. NBC’s Chicago shows – Chicago Fire, Med, and P.D. – will kick off new seasons on January 17th, with the Law & Order franchises returning on January 18th. New highly anticipated series debuting in January include Echo, Expats, Masters of the Air, The Brothers Sun, and Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale.

Midseason is the new fall.
As Hollywood and the broader industry continue to recover from the debilitating dual actors and writers strikes, the 2024 television landscape is coming into focus. All of the broadcast networks have set return dates for most of their shows, with the postponed Emmy Awards now set for January 15 and no usual Premiere Week to speak of.
But as series return to production with lower episode counts this truncated season, here again is Deadline’s annual list of premiere dates for new and returning TV series.
The roster covers hundreds of broadcast, cable and streaming programs debuting through 2024, with many listed as Tba as the year kicks off. It includes series and season debuts, shows returning from hiatus and some one-offs such as live sports and awards specials but not movies. The list includes shows that are in limbo for now but are likely to get premiere dates in the coming months.

After two weeks with no major studio releases, we get another weekend with just a single new wide release, though it should be one of the bigger holiday movies. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
What’s interesting about the three releases we’re covering in today’s weekend preview is that all three of them received mentions at the Golden Globes nominations on Monday.
The widest release into over 4,000 theaters is Warner Bros’ musical prequel “Wonka,” telling the origin story of chocolatier Willy Wonka, as played by Timothée Chalamet. The character was introduced in Roald Baum‘s 1964 children’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” but was made famous when played by Gene Wilder in the 1971 film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” Directed by Paul King (“Paddington”), this new take on the character, his origin story, co-stars Oscar winner Olivia Colman, Hugh Grant, Keegan Michael-Key,...

Holocaust movies are now a genre. It makes one more than a little queasy to acknowledge this. We’re talking about art that seeks to recreate an atrocity of such devastating scale and magnitude; to imagine the unimaginable. You can say the phrase “Holocaust movie” and a number of images and scenarios, conventions and clichés immediately spring to mind. Some of these feature films have been extraordinary. Several have been borderline exploitative. A few have been outright offensive. German philosopher Theodor Adorno is often misquoted as saying, “There’s no...

Showtime, one of the most trusted premium cable channels this side of HBO, is rebranding. The channel, owned by Paramount Global, is officially set to relaunch with a new name in January 2024. Get ready for the Paramount+ with Showtime era. This is a title that the company had already been leaning into on the streaming side, but now the long-standing cable channel is taking on the new branding as well. For better or worse, it's a corporate synergy move.
On January 8, 2024, Showtime will officially rebrand as Paramount+ with Showtime, so anyone who subscribes to the channel will need to be aware of the title change. That means the cable channel will have the same name as the company's top-tier streaming offering. Paramount+ also has an "essential" plan with ads that does not feature Showtime's original series. In a press release, Paramount explained: "The move aligns the brand with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan,...

Showtime’s linear network will officially be rebranded to Paramount+ with Showtime on January 8.
The linear version of Paramount+ with Showtime will feature new Showtime titles, including “A Gentleman in Moscow,” George Clooney’s “The Department” and “The Women in the Wall” as well as “Fellow Travelers,” “The Chi,” “The Curse,” “Yellowjackets,” and “Your Honor,” among others.
It will also include access to Paramount+ original series including “Sexy Beast,” the first and upcoming second season of “Halo,” seasons 1 and 2 of “Mayor of Kingstown,” seasons 1 through 4 of “Star Trek: Discovery,” season 1 of “Wolf Pack” and more.
The latest change comes after Showtime’s streaming offering was integrated into Paramount+ in June. The Paramount+ with Showtime streaming tier costs $11.99 per month, while the cheaper, ad-supported Essentials tier, which does not include Showtime, costs $5.99 per month.

Showtime’s linear network, which launched more than four decades ago during the early days of cable, will officially get a new name on January 8, 2024.
The network will be rebranded Paramount+ with Showtime. Parent company Paramount Global had announced the rebrand earlier this year, combining the previously separate Paramount+ and Showtime streaming apps into a single service under the new name.
A press release announcing the January date called Paramount+ with Showtime “the first of its kind multiplatform brand that integrates streaming and linear content.” Starting today, a launch campaign announcing the rebrand will air on Showtime owned and operated linear channels to drive awareness among viewers, the press release noted.
Original series from Showtime will continue to be available on the rebranded network. The slate includes premieres like A Gentleman in Moscow, the George Clooney-produced The Department and The Woman in the Wall as well as recurring staples like Fellow Travelers,...

The show is over for Showtime as a standalone brand.
As of Jan. 8, 2024, Paramount Global will rebrand the linear Showtime cable network as Paramount+ With Showtime — the same name as the company’s top-tier streaming package. With the name change, the premium cable network will add select Paramount+ original series.
Confusingly, however, some subscribers of the linear Showtime channel will not have access to the Paramount+ With Showtime streaming plan. Instead, Paramount+ With Showtime cable subscribers will be able to access programming online via the authenticated streaming apps of pay-tv partners. Paramount Global does have agreements with some large pay-tv providers that allow Showtime cable subscribers to also access the Paramount+ With Showtime streaming service.
According to Paramount, “The move aligns the brand with the Paramount+ With Showtime plan, a cornerstone integration for the streaming service, making this the first of its kind multiplatform brand that integrates streaming and linear content.

"Thanks for your National Socialist hospitality." A24 has debuted a second official trailer for The Zone of Interest, the acclaimed new film from British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer. Opening in theaters soon this December, the film is appearing on lots of Top 10 lists this month. It originally premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and was expected to win the Palme d'Or, though it ended up winning the Grand Prix second place prize. Though initially adapted from Martin Amis' novel of the same name, the film has a different focus. It's about the Nazi commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his family who live in a nice home located adjacent to this horrible concentration camp in Poland. This stars Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller as husband & wife, Freya Kreutzkam, Max Beck, Imogen Kogge, and Ralph Herforth.
