Joe Flaherty, the actor, writer and comedian known for his roles on the Canadian sketch comedy series “Second City Television” and “Freaks and Geeks,” died on Monday. He was 82.
Flaherty’s daughter, Gudrun, confirmed the news to Variety in a statement through the Comedic Artists Alliance, which had previously raised funds for Flaherty to obtain a 24-hour care provider.
“After a brief illness, he left us yesterday, and since then, I’ve been struggling to come to terms with this immense loss,” Gudrun said. “Dad was an extraordinary man, known for his boundless heart and an unwavering passion for movies from the ’40s and ’50s. His insights into the golden age of cinema didn’t just shape his professional life; they were also a source of endless fascination for me. Kiss concluded their “End of the Road Tour” with a final performance on Saturday night (December 2nd) at Madison Square Garden in New York City, returning to the city where their journey began. If it was indeed their last show ever, the rock legends certainly went out in style.
In the days leading up to Kiss’ two Msg shows, the Big Apple was besieged by an epic Kiss takeover. Among the many events and activities that took place were a special light show at the Empire State Building, the declaration of an official “Kiss Day” by Mayor Eric Adams, a pop-up store, complimentary Kiss tattoos courtesy of Inked NYC, a “Kiss Night” at a New York Rangers game, and much more.
On Saturday night, Kiss took the stage one last time, preceded by an opening set from Amber Wild, a hard-rocking new band featuring Paul Stanley’s son Evan. Despite...

In a perfect world, Kiss would have wrapped up the final show of their End of the World tour by inviting former members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss onto the stage for tearful hugs, an end to the bitterness that has consumed the group for decades, and one last rendition of “Rock and Roll All Nite,” giving the inevitable biopic a perfect last scene.
In the world we actually live on, Criss and Frehley were nowhere in sight when Kiss played their (supposed) final show at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening.

American hard rock band Kiss has now officially declared the end of their ‘End of the Road Tour’, which kicked off in January, 2019, and had rolled through in London last year.
This time though, the rockers have officially kissed touring goodbye after what was likely their final show in London. This marks a massive moment in the world of rock ‘n’ roll as the rock legends have been touring for over 46 years and filling up stadiums.
True to their reputation, Kiss played their final gig with full on rock fervor as they came to the stage in their iconic costumes with their signature make up. The stage lit up with fire, and the band gave their ace showmanship with the gimmicks they are famous for, such as spitting out blood, playing guitar while rolling, breathing fire, air walking and many more.

Old friends Natasha Lyonne and Melanie Lynskey have lots to reminisce about, having first forged a bond during the filming of the 1999 Kiss-inspired movie “Detroit Rock City.” But their most memorable on-screen pairing was in another movie that premiered that year — director Jamie Babbit’s queer cult classic “But I’m a Cheerleader.”
A quarter century into their friendship, Lynskey and Lyonne appreciate that both of their careers are peaking now that they’re in their 40s. On Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” Lynskey plays Shauna, a reckless New Jersey housewife traumatized by her experiences in the wilderness as a teenager. In the Peacock howdunit “Poker Face,” Lyonne portrays human lie-detector Charlie Cale, who solves crimes as she traverses the country while on the run.
Natasha Lyonne: Welcome to my soundstage. I told you I bought one.

Netflix’s “Stranger Things” was known for its nostalgic needle drops before the most recent season, but Season 4 catapulted the show’s soundtrack to a whole new level by putting Kate Bush back at the top of the charts decades after “Running Up That Hill” was first released.
But the “Stranger Things” Season 4 Volume 2 soundtrack isn’t without its own standout musical moments — including, yes, more Kate Bush.
The trailer for Season 4 features a remix of Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” which forecasts the impending sense of doom that comes with the latest, darkest installment of the Netflix tentpole, which contrasts very sharply with the use of Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” and The Who’s “Baba O’Reily” in the trailer for summer-y Season 3. Even the upbeat duet of “Never Ending Story” solidifies the long distance relationship between Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Suzie Bingham (Gabriela Pizzolo).

Perhaps you’d heard but a fresh season of a little show called Stranger Things just arrived on Netflix’s servers. There are always plenty of reasons to get excited about new episodes of Stranger Things, and the seven new episodes presented in season 4 volume 1 are no different.
Operating under an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra, Stranger Things season 4 is absolutely packed with ’80s-set science fiction, horror, and adventure. Once again, our heroic kids from Hawkins must confront a mystery from the Upside Down. In this case, who is this demonic wizard Vecna and why is he so hopelessly addicted to breaking human bodies?
In addition to all of the usual fun plotting though, a new season of Stranger Things means a new batch of old music. Though creators The Duffer Brothers were born in 1984 and probably don’t remember a hell of a lot of the 1980s,...

As evidenced by the meteoric resurgence of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” after its appearance on “Stranger Things 4,” the show’s soundtrack has become just as much a phenomenon as its thrilling plot.
With the final two episodes of Season 4 dropping on Netflix today, Legacy Recordings has released the complete soundtrack to “Stranger Things 4” in digital and physical forms. The album contains six additional songs, including an extended version of Bryce Miller and Alloy Tracks’ remix of Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” featuring the band’s singer Steve Perry.
“I was stunned at how cool it was,” Perry said of the original remix in a statement. “I found out that Bryce Miller and Troy MacCubbin had created it and told them how much I loved it. One week later, I had an idea for an extended version, so I called Bryce and we assembled our extended remix.

Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning to direct based on story of ’70s glam rock band
A music biopic called “Shout It Out Loud” about legendary rock band Kiss is in the works, and Netflix is nearing a deal to acquire the film package, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Joachim Rønning, the Norwegian director behind “Kon-Tiki,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” will direct the film. Kiss’ Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley will collaborate on the project, which spans the band’s story on stage and off. Ole Sanders wrote the latest draft of the script, with a previous draft coming from W. Blake Harron.
Netflix had no comment. A rep for the band said there are ongoing conversations with Netflix but no agreement has been signed.

Detroit Rock City is all about what a group of highly dedicated and loyal Kiss fans will do to get to the concert of their dreams in order to watch a band that were the idols of so many adolescents back in the day. You go into the film knowing the formula of a teenage movie and understanding that things are going to happen, but you still have to laugh at the misadventures and constant troubles that the guys get into in an attempt to see Kiss. Personally I liked the payback scene when they encounter the two disco music

The Burt Reynolds movie “The Last Movie Star” premieres in theaters and on VOD today, and Variety has a first look at the debut music video for the film, “Yet to Come,” which riffs on the movie’s primary Nashville setting. Scenes of Reynolds and costar Ariel Winter (“Modern Family”) cruising through Music City’s downtown streets are inserted into freshly shot footage of a previously unknown Nashville duo, Stranger Friends, busking in front of Tootsie’s and other locations familiar to tourists who flock to the town’s thriving Lower Broad district.
Surely it was tough getting permits to close down Nashville’s busiest block on a weekend for a music video shoot, right? Actually, no permits were involved, according to writer-director Adam Rifkin. “Somehow, when we’ve been making independent films for long enough,we know we know that if you ask the right way, almost anything is possible,...

Chicago – Watching a heavy metal band perform during daylight can be a little like watching a horror film with the lights on. The overall performance can sometimes lose a bit of its edge and intensity.
Fortunately that was not the case when the main acts took the stage for the “Chicago Open Air” concert at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. First up in that daylight, on the cool and breezy Friday afternoon of July 14th, 2017 – the first night of the three-day event – was the legendary thrash metal performers Anthrax, followed by the Megadeth, and then in the evening by Rob Zombie and the iconic rockers Kiss.
Anthrax, led by Joey Belladonna’s passion and high velocity vocals, matched the fury from the zealous crowd. The band opened with “Caught in a Mosh,” and bookended their performance with “Indians.” In between, Scott Ian’s shredding guitar, and the band’s fevered...

Stars: Robert R. Shafer, Barbara Niven, Miles Dougal, Rod Sweitzer, Nick Vallelonga, Melanie Good, Julie Strain | Written by Dan Povenmire | Directed by Adam Rifkin (as Rif Coogan)
You know, it wasn’t until the release of Detroit Rock City that I realised that a) Adam Rifkin and Rif Coogan are one in the same; and b) just how many of Rifkin’s films I considered amongst my favourites at that time: Never on Tuesday, The Dark Backward, The Chase and, of course, Psycho Cop Returns. Mainly because they were films I remember renting on video (you couldn’t escape trailers for The Dark Backward back in the VHS era) and seeing on Sky’s movie channels in the days when you could be guaranteed to find an “obscure” film screening as filler between their big-name flicks!

From the moment that “Dog Years” begins, the question isn’t if Burt Reynolds is playing a thinly veiled version of himself, but rather why? The aging, hobbled, and financially insecure Hollywood icon stars as Vic Edwards, an aging, hobbled, and financially insecure Hollywood icon.
And lest there be any confusion about the central conceit of this sweet-natured but fatally half-realized meta-drama about growing old and giving up, writer-director Adam Rifkin (“Detroit Rock City”) introduces his fictional hero with footage from one of Reynolds’ vintage talk show appearances, dubbing over the real actor’s name with that of his latest character.
The message comes through loud and clear: Burt Reynolds is communing with his past and coming to grips with the images that continue to haunt him, but he’s also adding one more (or one last) character to his wrinkled body of work. Unfortunately, while either one of those...

What is it? Two old college friends cross paths as adults and beat the ever-loving crap out of each other.
Why see it? Onur Tukel’s latest is also his best thanks in part to the lead performances by Sandra Oh and Anne Heche. They do a good job of manipulating our sympathies and concerns ensuring that our loyalties shift from act to act. Themes of female friendships, class distinctions, and redemption run through alongside a satirical look at modern life, and there’s a terrifically wicked streak throughout. Funny, smart, and brutal are all apt descriptors for this cynical look at our violent selves.

'Don't Breathe' movie: Dylan Minnette is a burglar who discovers that blind man Stephen Lang is not quite like former blind film victims Audrey Hepburn ('Wait Until Dark') and Mia Farrow ('Blind Terror'). 'Don't Breathe' movie review: Fede Alvarez succeeds with horror thriller-love story mix Horror filmmaker Fede Alvarez avoids the fate of the sophomore curse with his second feature film, Don't Breathe, which establishes the director of the 2013 remake of the iconic Evil Dead as the real deal when it comes to genre films that keep audiences on the edge of their dampened theater seats. Co-written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues, at only 88 minutes Don't Breathe is not only meticulously paced, but also remarkably clever in how it handles its characters and their motivations, and its audience and their expectations – titillating, but never quite letting either have exactly what they want.

Our perception of the Forest City having only seen it on screen.
All this week, Cleveland, Ohio, is being overrun with politicians, their supporters, and protestors of their platforms as the Republican National Convention is being held at the Quicken Loans Arena through Thursday. To help get a better sense of this “Cleve-Land,” as Howard the Duck calls it, we’re looking to entertainment, specifically movies and television, for what it can tell us about this city. If there’s anything we miss or misunderstand, blame Hollywood.
Cleveland Rocks
It’s the Rock and Roll Capital of the World, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, so it’s not surprising that, to an outsider, Cleveland primarily looks like a city where music reigns. You could make a nice concert with all the fictional bands based there, including Cherry Bomb from Howard the Duck, The Barbusters from Light of Day, the...

After a disappointing Fastlane Sunday night, WWE ramped up for the final six-week push to WrestleMania, dropping a couple bombshells on fans on Raw. Monday’s episode was bookended by shocking moments, but for very different reasons.
Raw opened with the Prodigal Son returning to soak in the cheers and closed with the Chosen One being booed when that clearly was not what WWE was going for. We saw Shane McMahon make his first significant appearance on WWE television in six years to confront his father and sister, instantly making him the biggest babyface on the roster, which is a problem in some ways, but awesome in others. We also saw Triple H dish out an epic beatdown of Roman Reigns that resulted in fans cheering for Hunter rather than rallying around the brutalized #1 contender. So much for the Roman Empire.
We also got two major matches confirmed,...

"Star Wars" is back, and it's never going away again. When "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" was released, there was no way in hell I would have expected an invitation to their premiere. After all, I had spent the entire production of the film publishing spoilers, including a review of the script that was published in November of '98. I was The Mighty Moriarty, part of Ain't It Cool News, part of the new unstoppable culture of spoilers, and I knew Lucasfilm wanted nothing to do with me. I had to sneak into the first press screening of the film with someone who had an official invitation. He was stressed the entire time that I was somehow going to get spotted or identified and that he'd get tossed out with me, but nothing happened. It was a press screening, though… not the premiere. The night of the actual premiere, I...

Nostalgia in pop culture seems to operate on a twenty-year delay These days, there are a lot of callbacks to '90s movies, TV shows, video games, and more. Conversely, the 90s were all about the '70s, and during the latter part of the decade, there was a resurgence of movies that took place in the late '70s, complete with earworm disco tunes and bell-bottoms. The king of these films is of course Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights." Whit Stillman’s “The Last Days of Disco” was an even-tempered approach to relationships during, well, the disco days. Spike Lee combined a gritty thriller with an ensemble drama in the 1977-set “Summer of Sam.” Adam Rifkin pitted hard rockers and disco kids against each other in the underrated “Detroit Rock City”. Among these was 1998 oddity “54," about a young and naïve stud’s fish out of water experiences as...

"Taskbacks and emails and shortcuts, oh my!" God forbid Matthew Perry and Jennifer Aniston got paid anything less than a million dollars each for this wonderfully retro Microsoft Windows 95 guide. Nobody — and that means Nobody — makes a movie like Giuseppe Andrews. The insane antics committed to produce Giuseppe’s 2007 epic Garbanzo Gas forms the basis of the documentary Giuseppe Makes a Movie, which is embarking on a North American screening tour this month. Dates and locations are below, which includes stops in Montreal; Los Angeles; Portland, Or; Austin, TX; and more.
Giuseppe Makes a Movie is directed by Adam Rifkin, who previously directed the cult hit Detroit Rock City, which co-starred Giuseppe and seemed like a terrific vehicle to launch the quirky young actor into near instant stardom.
But, Giuseppe had other ideas.
Shunning the Hollywood system, Giuseppe instead chose to work behind the camera and make movies in an incredibly unlikely location — the trailer park in which he lives with his biggest supporter, his father.

We’ve reviewed every summer movie season since 1980 to find out which are the best, and which are the worst. Last week we posted our picks for the worst, and here we post our picks for the best.
2015 and 2016 may just be the most overthetop summer movie seasons yet. It seems like nearly every movie slated for a summer 2015 or 2016 release is heavily anticipated. Because of these impending summers of movie awesomeness, we’ve decided to take a look back at summer movie seasons of years past. The idea of the summer movie season is currently in full swing, but it didn’t catch on immediately. Hollywood had to do its fair share of experimenting to determine what types of films would be most successful. As a result, some summer movie seasons have been better than others. We’ve reviewed them all for you and ranked them from worst to best.
