The 1975 began their Still… At Their Very Best Tour in September and it seems that fans have been enjoying every minute of their shows.
Fans have been treated to exciting performances of their hit songs like “The 1975,” “Be My Mistake” and “Looking For Somebody To Love.” They weren’t the only ones onstage, though, as they also have up-and-coming singer Dora Jar join them as their opener for many of their shows.
At their Madison Square Garden stop, frontman Matty Healy welcomed his father, Tim, up on the stage, where he sang the band’s song “All I Need To Hear.”

It’s a wish-you-had-gills type of humid September day in Nashville, but Lucinda Williams is comfortably out of the soup, sitting at the kitchen table of Ray Kennedy’s Room & Board Studio telling tales about life on the road to a gang of touring lifers including Tommy Stinson and Jesse Malin. They’re rare, behind-the-curtain anecdotes, many of which she shares in her superb memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. But in person, hearing them delivered in Williams’ syrupy Southern drawl, they’re especially captivating.

With Earth Mama, writer-director Savanah Leaf seems to be taking up James Baldwin’s evergreen adage that “anyone who has ever struggled with poverty knows how extremely expensive it is to be poor.” As the pregnant Gia (Tia Nomore) fights a foster care system on multiple fronts, Leaf throws us, head-first and in anxiety-inducing fashion, into the middle of an interlocking system of structural inequality seemingly designed to keep people trapped in cycles of hopelessness, in the process tearing families apart.
When we meet the single mother of two in Oakland’s backwater streets, Gia has already been stripped of most of her parental rights thanks to, we learn, a history of drug addiction. Though steadfast in her determination to prove to the courts that she’s a committed mother, Gia is hamstrung by the impossible and incompatible expectations that she somehow work enough to pay off child support, fit...

Angelina Jolie had the opportunity to star alongside the likes of Cameron Diaz in 2000’s Charlie’s Angels. But she rejected it for another project, even though she was told the film would boost her career.
Why Angelina Jolie rejected ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Angelina Jolie | Frazer Harrison/Getty Images
Jolie was already on the rise when Charlie’s Angels was in development. Movies like The Bone Collector and Girl,Interrupted were increasing her star-power. Winning an Oscar would only further establish Jolie as an A-Lister. She had the opportunity to add another commercial project to her name with Charlie’s Angels.
The feature already had a star-studded roster that included Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. Given Jolie’s own status at the time, she might have fit right in with the cast. The studio behind Charlie’s Angels believed so too, and tried to recruit the actor.

Some mild Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 spoilers follow.
Once again, director and writer James Gunn has added another unique dimension to one of his films, with the perfectly curated batch of oddball tunes that populate the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 soundtrack. And yes, once again, these tracks are presented as things being listened to by the characters during the events of the film, dropped in increasingly inventive, energizing, and even heartbreaking fashion at the appropriate moments.
Sure, things have changed a little bit, with the songs no longer being tied to any specific era, and being played as an assortment of tunes that had been uploaded onto a Zune MP3 player of all things, but they still hit just as hard, loud, and unexpectedly as they ever have. So if you’re ready to groove like your favorite bunch of interstellar misfits, here’s how you can do it.

Film critics have shared their mixed reactions to Andrea Riseborough’s surprise nomination for the 2023 Oscars.
On Tuesday (24 January), the nominations were announced for this year’s Academy Awards. You can read the full list of nominees here.
Among the snubs and surprises of the nominations was the inclusion of Andrea Riseborough in the Best Actress category.
The British actor stars in indie drama To Leslie as a Texas mother who wins the lottery. But while her performance received rave reviews, the film made just £22,000 in the global box office when it was released in October, leading many to believe that not enough awards voters had seen it to be a contender.
However, in mid-January, a guerrilla campaign began for Riseborough’s nomination on social media. High-profile stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Amy Adams, Jennifer Aniston and Jane Fonda, all praised the film online, calling for it to be considered by awards voters.

For every inspired nod (congrats, Kate McKinnon!) there was one that had me scratching the skin off my scalp (no best drama nod for The Good Wife?!). So without further adieu, I give you the good, the bad and the downright ugly from this year’s list.

Stop Wasting Your Breath. When the Guilty Remnant, the cult (or movement, or whatever) at the center of The Leftovers, tried to troll the good people of Mapleton out of their Heroes Day complacency, that was the message etched across its members' signs. Sure, the venue was inappropriate, and the method a little too protest-theater for its own good. But it's advice The Leftovers itself would do well to heed.

Hoping to recapture the magic of his 1992 mega-hit, Billy Ray Cyrus just released a hip hop version of "Achy Breaky Heart."
With the help of Dionne Warwick's son, Buck 22, the father of Miley revamps his country track for a new generation.

After somehow roping Larry King into doing the introduction, the veteran journalist tweeted, "Two decades later 'Achy Breaky Heart' has a new #hiphop spin to it thanks to my friend @billyraycyrus & @buck22music." Check it out below.

The Manic Street Preachers have so far spent twenty one years creating brilliant and important records. Unlike most bands that break into their third decade they have flourished rather than becoming stale. This time around the Manics have taken a breath and ‘Rewind The Film’ is a record that for a moment pauses and looks back nostalgically on youth in small welsh towns and the happiness and contentment that could be gleaned from simpler times. The anger of youth is still burning in everything the Manics produce but this time it is seen from a new perspective. Getting old is lamented but the blunt and defiant lyrics remain.
Clearly the brilliance of Ian McCulloch’s appearance on ‘Some Kind of Nothingness’ encouraged the band to feature more guest vocalists and this time around there are three who each have been expertly paired with their tracks. ‘This...

"Unfinished Song" is a cute British senior singers dramedy all-too-obviously inspired by the 2007 American documentary "Young@Heart." Round up some adorable retirees -- "Old Age Pensioners, or O.A.P.'s," the Brits call them. Put them in tie-dyed T-shirts, teach them "The Robot" and let them croon through "Love Shack," "Let's Talk About Sex" and "Maybe (I'm Crazy)" in between deaths, health crises and the like.
It's so impish and feel-good you want to pinch its cheeks and tell it "Aren't you precious?" Which it is.
Thank heaven for the presence of Terence Stamp, the original General Zod from "Superman" and one of the legends of the British screen. All this bubbliness all around him and all Stamp's character, Arthur Harris, can do is grouse and scowl with his best villainous glare.
Arthur indulges his wife's membership in a seniors' chorus, The "O.A.P.Z." He stands outside...

Chicago – One of the most influential sound artists in American rock history is Todd Rundgren. Known for radio friendly hits like “Hello It’s Me,” “I Saw the Light” and “Bang the Drum All Day,” Rundgren also is one of rock’s most notable producers, formulating hits for Meat Loaf, Grand Funk Railroad, the New York Dolls and Xtc.
Born near Philadelphia, he began his career in 1967 at the age of nineteen, forming the cult garage band Nazz. After leaving the band in 1969, he taught himself audio production and began a fruitful period of producing and creating name hit songs of the 1970s. His solo album “Something/Anything?” (1972) was a breakout hit record, and he also produced chart toppers like “We’re an American Band” (Grand Funk Railroad) and “Bat Out of Hell” (Meat Loaf). Here's news that offers a hint about the direction the just-wrapped "The Americans" will take in its second season. FX announced today that the spy drama will be moving a pair of its guest stars up to series regular status for its next year -- Annet Mahendru, who plays Nina, and Alison Wright, who's Martha. The Mahendru move isn't surprising -- Nina ended the season as a twice-turned agent, sworn into Directorate S and poised to pass along disinformation to her FBI contact Stan and sometimes lover Stan (Noah Emmerich). It's likely she'll play a significant role in the next season, as it was information from her that prompted the Kgb to call of the dangerous mission on which Phil (Matthew Rhys) had been sent, and as her loyalty doesn't seem set in stone. We’re down to the top six, so American Idol is cutting tonight’s show to a tight, breezy hour freeing up some time in the prime-time lineup and using their flagging-but-still-considerable audience to prop up one of their struggling sitcoms, showing a modicum of respect for their audience making the finalists sing two songs tonight. Tonight’s first round will be the songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, because by all means let’s make these kids sing songs that will never make their albums.Angie Miller kicks it off with “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” which she sings like a teenager with a difficult assignment, because that’s exactly what she is. (She also overenunciates hard, like a drama club girl, because that’s exactly what she is.) Keith, Nicki, and Randy call her on her lack of passion, and Mariah echoes the sentiment for three full...

Candice saved the best for last with her amazing performance on the April 10 episode of ‘American Idol’ — Mariah literally showered her in glitter. Has the winner been revealed? Watch her performance below!
The top six sang songs they wish they had written as Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson had mixed reviews throughout the night. So who will go home tomorrow? Tell us below.
The Top Six Sing Songs Written by Burt Bacharach
Angie Miller started off the night with “Anyone Who Had Heart.” “This one to me overall felt old fashioned,” Nicki said. Keith said it sounded like she wasn’t that passionate about the song.
Amber Holcolm (who likes to eat frozen shrimp…) sang “I Say A Little Prayer For You.” Nicki was screaming: “I am bowing down for you right now little girl! You are unbelievable! You are everything! You just became my favorite girl in this competition!

Here we are fans -- maybe the most talented Top 5 "American Idol" has ever seen ... and Lazaro Arbos. Who is voting for him? Are they deaf? We honestly don't even know anymore.
Tonight's theme is Burt Bacharach/Hal David for round one and Songs the Contestants Wish They Had Written (which ... Ok). So for round one, we're definitely in for a lot of slow songs.
1. Angie Miller, "Anyone Who Had a Heart"
Good choice for her, though with Bacharach songs, we're disappointed she's not at the piano. And while she sounds really nice, vocally, we wish there was a little more emotion behind it, a little more oomph. She seems ... hmmm. She seems passionate about singing, but not necessarily the words behind the song? Does that make sense? Still a nice vocal.
Keith asks her not to rely on her good voice alone and wants more passion from her emotionally,...

This just in: Mariah Carey is currently in the American Idol naughty corner (located somewhere between Keith Urban’s fitted t-shirt room and Nicki Minaj’s false-eyelash trunk).
Yes indeed, the “We Belong Together” singer mentioned in one of many verbose critiques tonight that she’d been “reprimanded by the powers that be” for failing to perform her duties as a judge (and presumably for doing little else besides offering empty platitudes and avoiding eye contact with the crazy cartoon character two chairs to her left). We asked for fresh, modern music on Season 12 of American Idol, and executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has responded with…the Burt Bacharach/ Hal David Songbook!
[Insert Sound of Crickets Here]
Ah well, at least the second theme for Top 6 Week — during which the contestants will each cover two songs apiece — is “The Song I Wish I’d Written.” That should yield some recent, not-done-to-death, edgy and/or unexpected material, as long as there’s not some heinous fine print that turns it into ”The Song I Wish I’d Written (From the List of 11 Songs That Uncle Nigel Bothered to Clear).”

There’s this plot conceit that many shows, especially thrillers have. Call it a ticking timebomb conceit to perhaps call to mind a sneaky metaphor. It’s the idea that someone, has a secret, perhaps a dangerous one, brewing way beneath the surface. A secret worth killing for. Look at Walter White. He’s a meth chemist. A profession not exactly on the legal side of business. Or Dexter Morgan. He’s a serial killer. There’s no underlying anything there. If these men had there cats come crawling out of the bag, they’ll be up that creek we all go up in our lives, and they most certainly don’t have a damn paddle to cling to. The Americans is ticking bomb television. And the secrets that our anti-heroes cling to are most certainly a terrifyingly pandemic one.

Lyricist behind some of the greatest pop hits of the 20th century
By contrast with his songwriter partner Burt Bacharach, whose suavely youthful looks belonged in a 1960s Martini ad, the lyricist Hal David, who has died at the age of 91, resembled a president of a suburban Rotary Club: a conservative, suit-and-tie figure from an earlier generation, modest and unassuming in conversation. But it was David's words as much as Bacharach's melodies that captured an audience for such songs as Anyone Who Had a Heart, I Say a Little Prayer, Walk on By, (There's) Always Something There to Remind Me, Alfie, Trains and Boats and Planes, (They Long to Be) Close to You, Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head and Do You Know the Way to San Jose?
Their period of greatest productivity, between 1962 and 1968, coincided with the heyday of their partnership with Dionne Warwick, the gospel-trained singer who gave voice to their finest collaborations.

Los Angeles — Hal David, the stylish, heartfelt lyricist who teamed with Burt Bacharach on dozens of timeless songs for movies, television and a variety of recording artists in the 1960s and beyond, has died. He was 91.
David died of complications from a stroke Saturday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to his wife Eunice David.
He had suffered a major stroke in March and was stricken again on Tuesday, she said.
"Even at the end, Hal always had a song in his head," Eunice David said. "He was always writing notes, or asking me to take a note down, so he wouldn't forget a lyric."
Bacharach and David were among the most successful teams in modern history, with top 40 hits including "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," "(They Long to Be) Close to You" and "That's What Friends Are For." Although most associated with Dionne Warwick, their...

Unlike the more traditional craftsmen, though, the four-piece didn’t need hammers and nails, hardhats and bricks, scaffolding and ladders. All they needed was a bit of inspiration, creativity, judgement and a concise idea of what they wanted to achieve. They had these. Now all they needed was a studio, paper and pen/laptop, a bit of belief from labels and fans alike and luck. They had these, also. The result of all these aspects is a band who can produce the most melancholic of tracks yet still elevate you to someplace new, a place reserved for music...

After shocking fans months ago with the news that its desert festival will span two weekends in 2012, Coachella confirmed with its lineup announcement Monday (January 9) that it is going big this year. Posted to the fest's Facebook page, the roster boasts Radiohead, The Black Keys and Dr. Dre with Snoop Dogg.
In response to last year's event selling out — a week after the 2011 lineup was announced — the festival is experimenting with featuring the same artists for two consecutive three-day weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22.
The Black Keys, who performed last year, return to Friday night, this time getting top billing. Radiohead, Saturday's headliner, last graced Indio, California's Empire Polo Fields in 2004. This is the first booking...

It’s hard to believe that hard-partying troupe Mötley Crüe are celebrating thirty years of rock and roll excess this year. (I bet their shocked themselves!) Drummer Tommy Lee and his band of brothers are bringing out all the stops. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lee revealed the band’s full stage setup – pyro, bikini dancers, etc. – will be squeezed onto the strip, which is rather impressive considering it also includes Lee’s famous 360-degree vertical drum rig that spins wildly in all directions when performing his aerial drum solos at shows.

If you found yourself as moved as I was by the documentary Young @ Heart, then this new drama out of the United Kingdom will definitely get your attention. The Daily Mail reports that veteran talents Vanessa Redgrave and Terrence Stamp are set to lead Song for Marion, which follows a progressive choir composed of elderly men and women singing contemporary pop and rock songs. In the film Redgrave plays the titular character while Stamp plays her husband Arthur who is reluctant to join the choir with Marion. But of course she and the choir leader, to be played by Gemma Arterton, want him there. In addition, Christopher Eccleston and Anne Reid also star in the film that will feature songs from Motorhead, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder and Cyndi Lauper. Paul Andrew Williams (London to Brighton) will direct the film which starts shooting later this month. And just so everyone's on...

In Hollywood, there are stars -- ephemeral and fleeting, dependent on each box office return for relevance -- and then there are stars with Stars.
Late Tuesday, a number of new stars with Stars were born, as the Hollywood Walk of Fame Selection Committee announced its 2012 honorees, naming the contemporary greats who will get their own permanent places on that famous strip of sidewalk in Los Angeles.
Leading the list of new honorees is Jennifer Aniston, who, interestingly, is being given a star primarily for her less-than-critically successful movie career, not her all-time, Emmy-winning run on "Friends." Kate Winslet will also get her own star for film, as will Scarlett Johansson, Vin Diesel and longtime Pixar honcho/director, John Lasseter.
On the TV side, "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening and beloved Batman Adam West are finally getting stars, as is "Law & Order: Svu" actress Mariska Hargitay, Valerie Bertinelli and "Star Trek" actor Walter Koenig.

One of our favorite mantras around the AfterElton offices is “because visibility matters.” Indeed, the idea that gay and bisexual men need to be visible, both to ourselves and to the wider culture, is one of the principle reasons AfterElton.com even exists. After all, it is only by being visible to family, friends and the world that we’ve been able to overcome the stereotypes and bigotry used to justify discrimination against the Glbt community.
That quest for visibility explains why we have done so many polls including the AfterElton Hot 100, the Fifty Greatest Gay Movies, the Top 50 Gay TV Characters, and the 50 Best Gay Books. After all, it’s not as if Entertainment Weekly is going to ask gay and bisexual men which guys we think are the hottest, which movies mean the most to us or, in the case of our latest poll, which celebrities we most admire.
