- TriviaWhen Mrs. Chevely discovers Gertrude's letter, it is laying atop a yellow book with an Aubrey Beardsley illustration on the cover. This is apparently a copy of The Yellow Book, which was a Victorian magazine of sorts. When Oscar Wilde was arrested on charges of sodomy in 1895, he was carrying what appeared to be The Yellow Book, and because of this association, the publication was ruined.
- GoofsAt the reception at the Chiltern's home, Sir Robert is requested to meet the Indian Ambassador. In 1895 India was a British possession and there could not be such an Ambassador who represents only independent states.
- Quotes
Lord Arthur Goring: Fashion is what one wears oneself. What is unfashionable is what other people wear. Other people are quite dreadful. The only possible society is oneself.
- Crazy creditsThe credits list Oliver Parker, the director, as playing "Bunbury", one of the gentlemen that is seen playing cards with Lord Goring in the Men's Club when Lord Chiltern arrives. Bunbury is also a never-seen character in "The Importance of Being Earnest", the play which is performed in the background of several scenes of this film.

The perfect wife finds she loves her "ideal" husband enough to forgive his ethical error thereby becoming the less than perfect wife.
How refreshing to find a movie for grown-ups! Did anyone else notice that Minnie Driver, in the role of Mabel, was doing a wonderful Audrey Hepburn impression throughout the movie? I think she is so underrated. She has such amazing range, whether playing poignant, comic, vulgar/comic, delicate,or tragic, she's always believable and fun/fascinating to watch. I also loved Rupert Everett, who struck just the right note. The cast must all have relished being able to speak such delicious dialogue. Of course the lush costumes and sets were impeccable, and created the perfect setting. The intricacies of the plot make a reviewing advisable and would certainly reward the viewer with lines of dialog and character interplay missed the first time around.
