Twin movies. Doppelgängers. Rapid fire remakes. Whatever you want to call them, Hollywood studios have a long and painful history of rushing concepts that run the gamut from similar to identical into theaters at virtually the same moment. Oftentimes the belief is if you get before the cameras first, the competitor(s) will throw in the towel and cancel production. Yet once in a while what seems like a turf war played out in industry trade papers, where the disputed territories are overlapping ideas or historical personages, spills out into the multiplex as “the same movie” comes to cinemas weeks or months apart.
This phenomenon is more than a hundred years old, with the first such instance believed to be two silent adaptations of Ivanhoe being produced on different continents in 1913, although a clearer kickoff might be when Paramount and MGM competed to get the first American Mata Hari movie...

Major spoilers for "Immaculate" and "The First Omen" follow.
There's a history of movies with oddly similar premises premiering within months of each other. "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" both hit theaters in the summer of 1998, much like the Earth-shattering meteors featured in both films. The year before, there was "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak." 2022 gave us not one but two "Pinocchio" movies (with a clean victory for Guillermo del Toro's version).
This past month saw the latest case of dueling movies: "Immaculate," released on March 22, 2024, and "The First Omen," released on April 5, 2024. Both films are about American nuns who fly off to a new life in Italy. Once they arrive at the convent, the young sister discovers a sinister conspiracy at work and becomes pregnant via an unnatural conception. Unlike Mother Mary, the fruits of their wombs are not blessed.

When a young American woman is dispatched to Rome to embark on a life devoted to serving the Catholic Church she encounters a malevolent force that prompts her to question her own beliefs. Unveiling a chilling conspiracy aimed at ushering in the birth of pure evil, she soon finds herself grappling with profound existential doubts and utter terror.
Sound familiar? Remarkably, this isn’t the plot of the recently acclaimed horror film Immaculate starring Sidney Sweeney, which has garnered immense praise from horror enthusiasts and is poised to join the ranks of cult classics. In what feels like a (brief) return of twin films — two movies with very similar plots released at the same time, like "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" — we now have "The First Omen" and "Immaculate" bringing Catholic horror and nunsploitation back to the big screen.
"The First Omen" takes us back to a sweet time in the '70s when everyone was obsessed with religious horror, thanks in no small part to the monumental success of "The Exorcist" and "Rosemary's Baby." The film is a prequel to Richard Donner's 1976 film "The Omen," about the coming of the Antichrist that also plays very much like a Catholic take on "Final Destination" — with photos that show the order and the gruesome manner in which several characters in the film will die.

Updated: President Joe Biden said that search and rescue operations are the top priority to find the six missing in this morning’s Baltimore bridge accident, in which a cargo ship slammed into the span and it collapsed.
“Our prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible accident, especially those waiting for news of their loved ones right now,” Biden said in a statement at the White House.
Ship traffic in the Port of Baltimore has been suspended, Biden said, while the bridge collapse has closed a major artery in the Northeast Corridor.
Biden said that the Army Corps of Engineers will lead the effort to clear the channel, and “we’re going to get it up and running as soon as possible.”
He also said that “it is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains some details of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, set for an eight-episode launch on the streamer March 21.
“Why should I get bent out of shape about what the world might look like 400 years from now,” physics research assistant Saul Durand (Jovan Adepo) says flippantly in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem. “I have no control over that.”
The sentiment of those words landed hard on me, because that’s almost exactly how I felt about the bloated and often remarkably boring big-budget sci-fi series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and True Blood producer Alexander Woo.
Premiering Friday night at SXSW in Austin’s Paramount Theatre, Netflix’s much-hyped series is based on the Hugo Award-winning writings of Cixin Liu. Set to launch with eight episodes worldwide almost everywhere but Liu’s native China on March 21, the fact is 3 Body Problem...

Michael Douglas, Geena Davis, Bill Pullman, Morgan Freeman and Tony Goldwyn appear in a new White House video in which the real president, Joe Biden, gets State of the Union advice from the fictional ones.
The video is a preview and promotion for Biden’s State of the Union speech this evening. It was produced by the White House Office of Digital Strategy, and was shot last weekend at Camp David.
“You may’ve heard I’ve got a big speech coming up. So, I thought I would hear from some folks who have done the job before – sort of,” Biden said on X/Twitter.
He says in the video, “I’ve never spoken to so many presidents all at one time.”

Let’s salute the 15 greatest depictions of fictional commanders in chief, ranked from worst to best, that have appeared both on TV series and in movies. Known sometimes by the name of Potus (President of the United States), we’ve got a large variety chosen for our photo gallery.
Two of the top characters featured are both from the mind of Oscar and Emmy winner Aaron Sorkin. He wrote the Rob Reiner film “The American President” starring Michael Douglas in the title role and Annette Bening as a potential romance. They only come along every once in a blue moon: the dueling movies. 1998 was an especially unusual year in that it saw two of them hitting theaters, with killer asteroid films "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" going head-to-head within the same 12-month span as the animated insect flicks "Antz" and "A Bug's Life." There haven't been too many since then, save for the clash of the White House action-thrillers in 2013 with "Olympus Has Fallen" and "White House Down." Now, 2024 is bringing us the next big showdown between movies with remarkably similar premises.
The unexpected shared theme? Imaginary friends.
Okay, fine, so John Krasinski's family-friendly "If" and Jeff Wadlow's horror thriller "Imaginary" seem to have almost nothing in common besides revolving around children's imaginary pals. Many people often blasphemously (and hilariously) joke around that Morgan Freeman is God. Not only because of his pitch perfect casting as God but also due to his smooth, defining and, yes, god-like is Morgan Freeman’s voice that one can’t picture penguins or parts of nature or, yes, God, without hearing the man. One reason could be that we’ve only ever really known Morgan Freeman as an older actor, not striking a chord with mainstream audiences until he was in his 50s.
Soon enough his skills, screen presences and voice had Hollywood calling every time they needed a kind wise grandfather types or a grizzled vet from either side of the the law or any type of narration in any type of film. That persona has marked him as a welcome figure throughout modern cinema – despite the nearly constant cash grabs that pad out the unfortunate bulk of his filmography.

Painkiller’s Peter Berg is unfazed by the Dopesick comparison.
Concurrent development of similar projects is a tale as old as time in Hollywood, and while it might be a negative for disaster flicks such as 1998’s Armageddon and Deep Impact, Berg views the Painkiller–Dopesick situation as a positive. It means that more and more people are able to learn about the still-ongoing opioid crisis and the massive role that Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family played in its origin. This story has also been told in other films and documentaries, so Berg’s Netflix series with EP Eric Newman, which debuted atop the streamer’s U.S. TV chart with 7.2 million views, and Danny Strong’s Hulu series are by no means alone. And similar to Berg, each present-and-past storyteller likely welcomes additional stories into the fold until this crisis is finally solved.

If you thought the chances of the Duffy Wrestling League succeeding would increase on Heels Season 2, the latest trailer will probably dash those hopes.
Starz on Monday unveiled a new sneak peek at the next chapter of the Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig drama, and it teases lots of tension for everyone involved.
The premium cabler previously teased the second season with a trailer earlier this month, but the latest footage hints at plenty of big swings in the storytelling department.
Heels Season 1 was a big success story, and with fans waiting almost two years for fresh episodes, there are high expectations to deliver a satisfying follow-up season.
A small-town sports drama series based on a wrestling league in rural Georgia, Heels is aptly named after the wrestling term for a villain or antagonist.
"Most stories center around heroes vs. villains, but in wrestling, it's faces vs. heels," the logline teases.

Season two brings fans back to the family-owned wrestling organization, Duffy Wrestling League (Dwl), where brothers and rivals, Jack (Amell) and Ace Spade (Ludwig), continue to fightover their late father’s legacy and their individual versions of success, while also working to find their own...

Audiences might bemoan the lack of original thinking at the movies these days — all those sequels, remakes, and reboots! — but even new ideas can feel suddenly played out when faced with the horrifying specter of parallel thinking. Consider everything from “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” to “Dante’s Peak” and “Volcano,” “Capote” and “Infamous” to “No Strings Attached” and “Friends with Benefits,” and those are just contemporary examples of the phenomenon. If you’ve got an idea for a movie — hopefully, a good one to boot — chances are, someone else has it, too. And they may even have it at the exact same time.
Such is the case with Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl’s “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” which arrives on the heels (fins? paws?) of some very similar other animated adventures, like Pixar’s superior “Turning Red” and the studio’s less thrilling entry “Luca,” both of which use monstrous...

After nearly a decade of talking about it, the "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie is finally coming our way later this year, thanks to the folks at Blumhouse. The company behind hits like "The Black Phone" and "The Purge" is bringing the beloved series of video games to life, meaning some animatronic murder bears will be gracing the silver screen this Halloween season. But a small movie from a couple of years ago may have beat Blumhouse to the punch, and Nicolas Cage was the man doing the punching.
In early 2021, as the pandemic was still raging on, Screen Media Films released "Willy's Wonderland," which features Cage as an unnamed janitor with no dialogue in a film that, as it happens, seems to resemble "Five Nights at Freddy's" an awful lot. Directed by Kevin Lewis, the film focuses on a quiet loner who agrees to clean an abandoned family fun...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
It happens every so often: two Hollywood movies come out around the same time, with a shockingly similar premise. There was "Top Gun" and "Iron Eagle" in 1986, "Dante's Peak" and "Volcano" in 1997, and in more recent times, "Hercules" and "The Legend of Hercules" in 2014. But the most infamous of these twin films battles took place in the summer of '98, when "Deep Impact" went up against "Armageddon" as the two asteroid disaster flicks battled it out for box office supremacy. Ultimately, Michael Bay's "Armageddon" came out on top.
It's not as though director Mimi Leder's "Deep Impact" was a failure — in fact, by many metrics, it was a gigantic success. It's just that it wasn't quite as big as Bay's bombastic spectacle starring Bruce Willis,...

The threat of global apocalypse has influenced genre filmmaking from the very beginning. One of the earliest apocalyptic films we have a record of is 1916's "The End Of The World," which illustrates the disastrous consequences of a comet that flies near Earth. The plot is often understood as a response to the near-apocalyptic event of 1910, when Halley's Comet got a little too close for comfort. World events themselves became quite apocalyptic during WWII, but films of this nature actually weren't popular at the time; the news provided enough scares.
The first real heyday of apocalyptic filmmaking came in the 1950s, when the atomic bomb, the Cold War, and the space race stoked fears about impending doom. This fascination with the world ending continued throughout the century. The Cold War lasted through the 1980s, after all, though the ideological focus of these movies changed over time. The 1990s took these movies to an expensive,...

In 1998, Earth was under attack by threats from deep space … or, at least, Hollywood would have you believe. Two blockbuster films that year were built around the premise of a space object on a collision course with Earth: Deep Impact and Armageddon. Despite sharing eerily similar plots, both were box office hits. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Deep Impact’s opening in theaters; Téa Leoni, who starred in the movie, told us she knew she wasn’t making a movie with Oscar potential, yet she still had a great time making the film. Plot: A teenage boy runs away to follow his father’s footsteps, legendary storm chaser Bill Brody.
Review: It’s been quite a long time since we’ve gotten a fun film about inclement weather. Having grown up on films like Twister and Deep Impact, natural disasters always make for a thrilling story. Whether the other pieces come together is often up to the individual, but I feel most people going into a “weather” movie, have those expectations properly adjusted. But Supercell has a surprising amount of heart and some interesting performances that put this above some other low-budget types.
Supercell starts in fairly stereotypical fashion, with our lead’s father dying in a giant supercell. Years later, his mother is a complete mess and has left weather researching behind. Yet the son, William, wants to walk in his dad’s footsteps. That’s to say he wants to research Supercells…...

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Forrest Gump is Andrew Scott Bell’s origin story, in a manner of speaking. When his parents bought the two-disc soundtrack, packed with cuts from Bob Dylan and Creedence Clearwater Revival, he gravitated most to the final track, “Forrest Gump Suite,” by composer Alan Silvestri, who is also known for What Lies Beneath, Castaway, and Avengers: Infinity War, among countless other works.
“I remember hearing the track and lightning sparks going off in my brain,” he tells Bloody Disgusting. So, he listened to it over and over again until he learned how to play it on piano. “I’ll never forget how to play it,” he adds.
From upstate New York, Bell grew up in a very religious home. Being a “weird queer kid,” he found himself taking dance, ballet, and piano lessons. “When I was very young, I landed on art and drawing, and I was really into that.

Wow! I did not have a Ghost remake from Channing Tatum on my 2023 Bingo card, folks, and yet, here we are. According to a Vanity Fair cover story, Tatum’s production company, Free Association, owns the film rights to the supernatural drama released in 1990, starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg.
“We actually have the rights,” Tatum said to Vanity Fair. “Yeah, we have the rights to ‘Ghost.'” The report also says Tatum could play Patrick Swayze’s role in the remake.
“But we’re going to do something different,” Tatum added, referring to changes he plans to make to the original film’s harmful stereotypes.
Jerry Zucker directed Ghost from a script by Bruce Joel Rubin. Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Goldwyn, Vincent Schiavelli, and Rick Aviles star in the romantic fantasy comedy. Zucker’s 1990 classic revolves around Sam West (Swayze), a murdered banker whose...

Multiple movies coming out in quick succession, dealing with similar subject matter, is nothing new in Hollywood. It's a phenomenon called Twin Films, and we're not referring to the shared filmography of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito.
In 1964, both "Dr. Strangelove" and "Fail Safe" were released, dealing with the threat of nuclear war -- though, obviously, one is a satire and the other is a straight drama. More than 30 years later, late '90s movies like "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak," "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact," and "Antz" and "A Bug's Life" carried on this tradition. But in the early '90s, there was a sudden rush to produce movies about legendary American lawman Wyatt Earp with the 1993 film "Tombstone" and, well, "Wyatt Earp," which came out the following year.
These days, the one most people tend to remember is "Tombstone," thanks largely to a scenery-chewing performance from Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday.

When James Cameron delivered Avatar in 2009, none of us quite grasped that this was not a movie but a constellation of movies – one that will represent a multibillion-dollar investment in the coming years. One iteration is even booked for 2028.
Lesser filmmakers may think from film to film, but Cameron thinks cross-generational. Not since 1928 when Mickey Rooney committed to 34 Andy Hardy movies and shorts has anyone contemplated this sort of longevity.
In 1972, Francis Coppola famously announced that, from a filmmaker’s standpoint, sequels suggest a creative void. Even Cameron himself once agreed, pointing out, ”Spielberg didn’t make Et Returns.”
It was a million-dollar deal that changed Coppola’s mind — hence Godfather II. And Cameron’s pricey sequels already have sub-sequels; he’s already shot Avatar 3 and finished the script for Avatar 5.

The prologue of “God of War Ragnarök” peaks with a dramatic moment that fans of Sony’s blockbuster video game franchise have been waiting for since it was teased at the end of the previous installment in 2018: The reveal of the saga’s big bad, a Norse deity whose obsessive desire to rip apart the fabric of fate itself has severely complicated the former God of War’s quest to scatter his wife’s ashes from the highest peak in all the nine realms and establish an emotional bond with the child he seldom refers to by name.

Irish actor Pierce Brosnan has been a fixture of film and television for over 40 years, most recently as Dr. Fate in the blockbuster DC Comics adaptation "Black Adam." With his effortless suaveness and sophistication, he's been an indelible screen presence, though some of his best performances tweak the audience's expectations of the man who embodied gentleman spy James Bond across 4 films. He's also sporadically been gifted the opportunity to explore his exceptional comedic chops.
From action movies to family fare to icy political thrillers to musicals, Brosnan has explored almost every genre, often to great success. Even when he's playing the jobber, he's managed to make every project personal. "You have to invest yourself in every character that you portray," Brosnan is quoted as saying. While it was difficult to narrow down, here are the 15 best Pierce Brosnan performances, ranked.

The disaster film comes and goes. The genre was massive in the 1970s, leading to classics like "The Towering Inferno" and "The Poseidon Adventure." It saw a resurgence in the '90s thanks to hits like "Armageddon" and "Dante's Peak," and there's been a slight bump over the past decade, too — think "Skyscraper" and "San Andreas," both starring The Rock. These films are often a chance to cobble together an all-star cast and thrill audiences by showing off some special effects work.
The biggest and best disaster films stick around. After all, people still debate whether "Armageddon" or "Deep Impact" was better. There are plenty more, however, that are forgotten. Whether due to genre fatigue or inexplicable box office failure, many have flown under the radar yet are still worth a watch. Some have casts that make them worthwhile (Alain Delon from "Le Samouraï" is in an "Airport" movie!), while...

A few weeks ago, NASA made history by slamming a spacecraft into an asteroid seven million miles away from Earth to see if it could successfully change its course. The lump of rock posed no threat to our planet, merrily minding its own business on its way toward the sun, but the mission was a success. The Dart (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) impact exceeded expectations, shortening the asteroid's orbit around its larger parent by 32 minutes instead of the hoped-for 10 minutes. The experiment raised hopes that if an asteroid was on collision course with Earth, we could actually do something about it.
It was like something out of a Hollywood movie, and no doubt prompted many people to dust off their copies of "Deep Impact" and "Armageddon" in celebration. Both films hit theaters in 1998, one of those weird cinematic instances when two movies about exactly the same thing drop within a few months of each other.

Hollywood has a thing about making the same movie more than once. And often at the same time. Over the years, we've watched as an idea takes hold of the town in such a way that films released within months of one another wind up competing because they are, in essence, telling the same story. In 1997, it was Dante's Peak vs. Volcano. A year later, moviegoers chose sides in the asteroid film face-off between Deep Impact and Armageddon. In 2004, the adventures of the president's daughter were top of mind in both Chasing Liberty and First Daughter. It's a phenomenon known as the twin films, born out of a somewhat cutthroat industry that's smaller than you might think, where a pass on producing a...

What if the only way to stop the end of the world was by making love to an older version of yourself who claimed to be from the future? What if you brought someone back to life, but they annoyed you so much that you were tempted to just kill them again? These are just two of the many bold and bizarre “what ifs?” featured in Tiny Cinema, Tyler Cornack’s new anthology that world premiered as the opening night movie at this year’s Popcorn Frights Film Festival. And no matter how “out there” or uncomfortable these questions may seem, Cornack (who also co-wrote the anthology along with Ryan Koch and Bill Morean) does not shy away from answering them in brazen, comical, and at times disturbing fashion, with many of the film’s segments feeling like they would be right at home airing in the late-night hours alongside...

"Here, we don't believe in dreams... we live in nightmares." Dread Presents has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror anthology featured called Tiny Cinema. It's premiering at two different genre festivals this month (Popcorn Frights / FrightFest) and will be out on VOD in September. From the makers of Butt Boy, Tiny Cinema is a twisted tale of seemingly unconnected strangers whose lives will change in incredible and bizarre ways forever. This seems to be the very first "multiverse" horror film. "Game Night" spirals out of control when a simple joke goes over a guest's head. "Edna" is looking for love in all the wrong places. "Bust" sees two friends stopping at nothing to help their impotent buddy. "Deep Impact" has a delivery man deliver a package to himself... from the future. "Mother*******" focuses on an unlucky mafia card game. And "Daddies Home" finds a man transforming after unknowingly...

Fresh from his Emmy nomination for guest actor in a drama series for his appearance in “Euphoria,” Colman Domingo is set to executive produce P.J. Palmer short “North Star,” in which he also stars.
In “North Star” Domingo plays a patriotic and hardworking rancher and one half of a middle-aged, same-sex couple. His other half Craig (played by Tony award nominee Malcolm Gets) is dying. Tensions arise when Craig’s sister Erin (“Mad Men’s” Audrey Wasilewski) arrives unannounced to whisk him off to see out his final days with his “real” family.
Laura Innes (“Deep Impact”) and Kevin Bacon (“Footloose”) also star, playing televangelists who “push shame, fear, and division as the cornerstones of faith.”
“The Maze Runner’s” Chris Sheffield rounds out the cast.
P.J. Palmer (“The Grapes of Wrath: An American Story”) wrote and directed the short. He was previously series producer on Amazon Prime LGBTQ+ drama “Anyone But Me.
