After 3 seasons, John Wilson is tired of people questioning the integrity of “How To With John Wilson.” However, when you spend 18 episodes curating the most unbelievable New York oddities and storylines while sending crews out to film “houses that look like faces” or a “bunch of bottles of urine discarded on the sidewalk” (which are actually pretty easy to find in the city), the public can’t help but wonder if the subjects of his docuseries on HBO are really… real.
The master of weaving seemingly unrelated narratives and anecdotal tangents together into an (often emotional) truth about humanity sat down with Variety‘s Making a Scene to discuss why he was ready to address the disbelievers and unveil his process of creating the final season of “How To.”

Yaphet Kotto as Jean-Luc Picard? Wesley Snipes as Geordi? Jenny Agutter as Dr. Crusher?
Gene Roddenberry considered all of these actors for Star Trek: The Next Generation before casting Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton, and Gates McFadden. However, the most surprising alternate idea for a Tng character involved Tasha Yar, the ill-fated security chief aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.
The Tale of Macha Hernandez
The Tng series bible, released before the show premiered as a guide for writers and actors, describes Yar in terms similar, if not completely one-to-one, with the character we know from the series. “Born at a ‘failed’ Earth colony of renegades and other violent undesirables, she escaped to Earth in her teens and discovered Starfleet, which she still ‘worships’ today as the complete opposite of all the ugliness she once knew,” the description explains.

Actress Kate Winslet is synonymous with the character of Rose from James Cameron’s disaster epic Titanic. The film saw her paired up with Leonardo DiCaprio in the doomed romance set aboard the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic in 1912. The film garnered her a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars and the film was the highest-grossing movie of all time then.
Despite earning billions, Titanic remains one of the many in Winslet’s amazing filmography. Though she is best known for her role in Cameron’s film, she has delivered far superior and mature performances since the big blockbuster. Here are three performances from Kate Winslet’s extensive filmography that are far better than Titanic.

In the late 1980s/early 1990s, Avatar, Aliens, and The Terminator director James Cameron had ambitious plans for a live-action Spider-Man movie.
After writing the screenplay with Barry Cohen and Ted Newson, he'd have directed the movie. While we've heard about many possible casting ideas the filmmaker had, Leonardo DiCaprio was expected to play Peter Parker.
It's one of those movies fans will likely always wonder about; instead, Sam Raimi helmed 2002's Spider-Man, with Tobey Maguire playing the web-slinger and a tone more in line with Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's comics instead of the R-Rated adventure Cameron likely had planned.
Electro and Sandman were expected to be Cameron's villains, though a quote attributed to the director at Cinematheque Francaise in Paris confirms he also had plans for Venom.
"And then there's Spider-Man, the greatest movie I never made," he said. "Because my version of the project didn't get off the ground,...

Buckinghamshire Council backed a recommendation from its planning officers that Marlow Film Studios’ plans be refused.
Campaign groups had previously argued that the plans for the Marlow quarry area were inappropriate and the development has proved controversial in the area for months. According to local newspaper the Bucks Free Press, the leader of Marlow Town Council had previously said he and fellow members were “taking legal advice” after receiving “libellous abuse” for their perceived support of the project.
Robert Laycock, chief executive of Marlow Film Studios, told the BBC he is considering next steps.

Almost thirty years after it completely blew the whole world away upon its release, James Cameron’s epic disaster movie Titanic now seems to be nothing but a perfection, where every detail couldn’t be showcased better. Still, back in the day the film underwent a whole list of changes that eventually helped it become the worldwide raving success that hasn’t really quietened down to this day.
Apart from that iconic door that couldn’t save Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack from drowning, Céline Dion’s heart-shattering ballad My Heart Will Go On also appears to be a kind of synonym to the grand movie, though initially it had all the risks of being brutally turned down by James Cameron himself.

The first Saudi Arabian film ever selected for Cannes, the tender rural drama “Norah” is writer-director Tawfik Alzaidi’s first feature film. The story of a schoolteacher tasked with introducing literacy to an isolated village and his unlikely relationship with a precocious young girl, the movie suffers from a few early-career filmmaking tics, which prevent all its pieces from all neatly fitting together. However, it’s also underscored by the kind of optimism and poetry about art that one often finds in novice works from directors destined to make more polished and accomplished films (if perhaps more cynical ones). Alzaidi has that potential in spades, as “Norah” is a self-reflexive testament to the deep and profound need for artistic expression.
Set in 1996, years before cinema and other art forms were reintroduced to the Saudi mainstream, the film follows orphaned teenager Norah (Maria Bahrawi), who lives with her aunt’s family...

Exclusive: Buffalo 8 has acquired streaming and VOD rights to Int. Hallway/Night, an existentialist dark comedy from actor-director Billy Zane (Titanic), out of the Cannes Film Festival. Details as to the release plan haven’t been disclosed.
Co-written by Zane, Andre Alves, Nick Loeb and Hugo Melo, pic follows a film director (Zane) who checks in on his actress wife, who he suspects is having an adulterous affair, while she shoots a horror film in Georgia. He soon finds the murderous plot of the film parallels his darkest fantasies of revenge, and one day during production wakes to find he has entered the film itself as the jealous and murderous husband in a comedic, meta telling of a doomed love triangle set in purgatory.
“Int.Hallway / Night explores the universal themes of infidelity and the variety of ways one processes the seemingly inescapable slide,” said Zane in a statement to Deadline.

“Is Tamara here?” In May of 2008, those three words hung in the air with foreboding menace (along with “because you were home”) as Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers played in theaters and shocked moviegoers like myself with its straightforward approach to home invasion horror and random violence. Now, 16 years later, the masked murderers now known as Pin-Up Girl, Dollface, and Scarecrow are back on the big screen in The Strangers – Chapter 1, the first film in a new trilogy and the third movie overall in the franchise (the most recent being 2018’s The Strangers: Prey at Night). More of a relaunched expansion of the franchise rather than a full-on remake of the original movie, The Strangers – Chapter 1 still retreads a lot of the first film’s frights, but it does so effectively while weaving in its own intriguing story threads, delivering a promising start to a new trilogy of terror...

In the first scene of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, Charlotte (India Amarteifio) sulks in a carriage en route to marry King George. Her brother jokes that she hasn’t moved in six hours.
Charlotte scowls and responds: “The gown sits atop a bespoke underpinning made of whalebone. The problem with whalebone is that it is rather sharp. I am in the height of fashion, so this corset is quite snug. If I move too much, I might be sliced and stabbed to death by my undergarments. I am angry and I cannot breathe. Turn this carriage around or I will bounce. I will impale myself on this ridiculous corset and bleed to death.”
This monologue is great for setting up Charlotte’s feistiness. But Charlotte is very misinformed about her own underwear. European women in the 1760s called their structured undergarments “stays” not “corsets.” Stays weren’t made with...

Nothing much has changed in Leonardo DiCaprio’s dating preferences since breaking out in the ’90s. While lauded as one of the best actors of our time, for years, the Oscar winner has been a part of a running joke of being incapable of dating anyone above the age of 25. Although it’s entirely possible that this might be a coincidence, it’s hard to ignore the pattern.
But fans aren’t alone when it comes to making memes and jokes about the actor’s alleged dating pattern, as acclaimed singer and actor Sabrina Carpenter too joins the meme train.

Sabrina Carpenter Roasts Leonardo DiCaprio On Her Birthday ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Leonardo DiCaprio’s penchant for dating younger girls is well-documented in history and social media. Last year, a graph demonstrating the ages of DiCaprio’s previous girlfriends, all 25 or under, was circulated online to everyone’s amusement.
Ricky Gervais even quipped about the Titanic star’s inclination to date younger women at the 2020 Golden Globes where he joked, “Leo DiCaprio attended the premiere [of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood] and by the end, his date was too old for him.” At the time, the actor was seeing Camila Morrone, who was 22 years old to his 45.
As Leonardo DiCaprio’s dating life has become part of the cultural discourse, it was unsurprising that the topic wormed its way into Singer Sabrina Carpenter’s 25th birthday celebration.

"Here's looking at you, kid."
"You're going to need a bigger boat."
"You talking to me?"
We obviously love writers around these parts, but sometimes, the best laid plans of a screenplay simply don't work out as intended. In rare instances when the film gods are really smiling down on a movie set, the result can sometimes be that improvised lines, like the three listed above, are etched into cinema history and end up becoming the most famous lines of their respective films. Such is the case with James Cameron's box office behemoth (and flat-out terrific film) "Titanic," which has several memorable lines, but thanks to Cameron utilizing it in his eventual Oscar speech, perhaps none are as famous as when Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack Dawson shouts "I'm the king of the world!" from the bow of the doomed ocean liner.
Despite that line being synonymous with "Titanic," it wasn't in Cameron's original script.

A sad day for the industry as Hollywood loses one of its most influential figures. Roger Corman, the King of B-Movies, has sadly passed away at the age of 98 on May 9th, 2024.
The following statement was issued by his family:
“His films were revolutionary and iconoclastic, and captured the spirit of an age. When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said, ‘I was a filmmaker, just that,.’“
Born in Detroit, Michigan, his career in film began at the 20th Century Fox mailroom, where he eventually became a story reader. Through his connections, he began producing and directing films such as The Fast and the Furious and Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet. Over the years, he worked with multiple industry veterans, such as Vincent Price and Boris Karloff.
His biggest period was when he launched New World Pictures with his brother Gene. Under the ownership of 20th Century Fox,...

James Cameron is currently one of the highest-rated filmmakers in the entire entertainment industry, having helmed fan-favorite masterpieces like Titanic and 1986’s Aliens. But he wasn’t always this famous, nor were his outstanding directing skills garnering interest from audiences for at least a few years after he kicked off his directorial debut with Xenogenesis in 1978.

That said, besides The Terminator film series, what actually made him super famous in the industry was his brilliantly helmed Avatar saga, which quite literally surpassed the Star Wars lore by flying colors. But that wasn’t Cameron’s first attempt at outshining George Lucas’ universe, because the first attempt came nearly three decades earlier in 1980 through one of Cameron’s poorly-rated films.

The second episode of the new "Doctor Who" season (and the best episode of the two-part premiere) starts off with what is basically just one giant meta joke. The Doctor is pleasantly surprised when Ruby asks for him to take them to watch the Beatles as they record their first album. He tells her that most companions pick basic, predictable destinations like the Titanic or Mars, and then marvels, "Why haven't I ever done this before?"
The answer is surprisingly simple: The Titanic disaster is public domain, but the Beatles' music is not. "Doctor Who," a show that is famous for its shoestring budget and its wobbling sets, has likely never been able to afford the licensing fee required just to play one of the band's songs. Whereas most bands only charge in the $25,000 to $50,000 range for a TV show to use a song of theirs — which is already pushing...

Years before Sam Raimi’s ground-breaking Spider-Man trilogy made it to the big screen and forever revolutionized the comic book superhero genre, there were several other iterations of the tale with several other filmmakers and actors associated with the project. One of them was James Cameron, who was eager to have a more mature and grounded take on the web-slinger’s live-action debut film.

Associated and contacted by Carolco Pictures, Cameron originally wanted Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead before the studio went bankrupt. However, if the filmmaker’s version of the movie had made it through, we would have gotten Spider-Man fighting two different Marvel villains in his first film.

Pinewood Studios has sold its minority stake in the Dominican Republic’s horizon water tank facility, which has been renamed Lantica Studios after its now sole owner, Lantica Media.
Formerly known as the Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios, Lantica Studios is undertaking the building of a fourth soundstage, measuring 16,000 sq.ft., and two additional workshop spaces of 12,000 sq. ft each, mainly dedicated to housing camera, grip and electric equipment vendors. These are set to open by the Spring of 2025.
The landmark expansion comes as the 10-year-old studio has seen record growth in international and local production, which has led to the availability of more skilled crew in the Dominican Republic (Dr), either trained on the job or in regularly held workshops. “We’ve grown from hiring locals at an average rate of 400 – 500 a year to 2,000 a year,” said Albert Martinez, CEO of Lantica Studios.

Deep in the lush mountains of the Caribbean island of Dominica, amid stands of lemongrass, giant ferns and palms, three roads converge where two lives ended, violently. A few weeks before Christmas, the bodies of Daniel Langlois, a French-Canadian philanthropist and Hollywood animation centi-millionaire, and his partner, Dominique Marchand, were found at that spot, in a car, halfway into a ravine, burned beyond recognition. Even though the bodies were charred, investigators could tell they had been shot first.
The official and still-evolving story of their murders is a classic tale of good versus evil set in a steamy jungle. Like other expats who live on Dominica, Langlois and Marchand, who bought their property in the late 1990s, were attracted to the island’s wild, Edenic quality; its waterfalls, volcanic hot pools and deep green forests where spectacular blossoms northerners would see only in florist shops grow like weeds. But the...

There’s a special tug at the heartstrings that follows the death of an actor who’s been closely associated with a death scene, as is the case with Bernard Hill, who died May 5 at the age of 79.
The death of Juanita Moore in 2013 at the age of 98 came 54 years after maybe the ultimate movie deathbed scene — not to mention funeral, with a horse-drawn hearse and Mahalia Jackson eulogizing her in song — in Douglas Sirk’s “Imitation of Life.” And when Carl Weathers died earlier this year, it came nearly four decades after his best-known character, Apollo Creed, had died in “Rocky IV,” prompting the entire “Creed” franchise to spring up in his wake, with him conspicuously, obviously, absent.
Much praise and remembrance has been given since Hill’s passing to his role as Captain E.J. Smith in James Cameron’s “Titanic.” But Bernard Hill’s death scene as Theoden...

Bernard Hill’s castmates from The Lord of the Rings gave several touching tributes to the actor, who died Sunday at the age of 79.
Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan and Sean Astin — who played the hobbits in Peter Jackson’s three blockbuster films — honored him at a Comic Con event in Liverpool.
Hill played the stern and regal King Théoden, who helped lead the saga’s heroes to victory during the battle at Helm’s Deep in 2002’s The Two Towers, and then again at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields in 2003’s Return of the King.
“We just want to take a moment, before we walk off this stage, to honor him,” Astin told fans at the event. “He was supposed to be here today. We love him. He was intrepid, he was funny, he was gruff, he was irascible, he was beautiful.”

For a director as esteemed as Cameron, there must be very few things that can still hold that effect on him, however, Titanic still manages to churn out such rare and treasured moments at a steady pace.

Despite playing only a minor role in the film, the subtlety of Bernard Hill’s powerhouse performance in the iconic Leonardo DiCaprio film held the capacity to move the director of the $2.26 billion romantic tragedy. As such, it was only right that Cameron expressed his gratitude and privilege after witnessing the understated actor’s process at work.

Versatile actor whose role as Yosser Hughes in the BBC’s 1982 series Boys from the Blackstuff made him a television star
The actor Bernard Hill, who has died aged 79, starred in two of the only three films to have won 11 Oscars. In Titanic (1997), he was the ship’s captain, Edward Smith, while in The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003), he reprised the role of King Théoden from the previous instalment, The Two Towers (2002). Both parts drew on his grave, peremptory air, and his ability to be simultaneously fallible and resolute.
It was his fearsome yet pitiful performance as the jobless labourer and single father Yosser Hughes, in Alan Bleasdale’s tragicomic BBC series Boys from the Blackstuff (1982), that made him a television star. The role came to define not only Hill but an entire era. Yosser’s plaintive, hectoring catchphrase – “Gizza job” – was parroted everywhere from the Kop to the corner shop,...
