“The Islander” is about a down-on-his-luck rockstar, who moves to a remote cliffside house, sight unseen, on an island, only to discover his new home has an unfortunate notoriety. Through a series of charming mishaps, it turns out maybe love can be found right where he left it.
The film is written, directed and produced by Stelana Kliris under her Cyprus-based Meraki Films banner. It is also produced by Jupiter Peak Productions, Steven Shapiro, and Keith Arnold, with the support of the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Culture, and the Cyprus Film Commission’s incentives scheme.
Alongside Connick, it stars Agni Scott, Ali Fumiko Whitney and Tony Demetriou.

At the beginning of James Gunn's "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special," Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) is approached by a band of space aliens who claim to have been practicing on a set of new-fangled Earth instruments they had recently been gifted. They also know, in a vague sense, that it's the time of year that Earthlings typically celebrate an oblique holiday called Christmas and they have decided to write a song in honor of it. The aliens, however, only have a vague idea of how Christmas operates and get a lot of the details incorrect. Their tune is called "I Don't Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime is Here)."
The credits reveal the alien band to be named Bzermikitokolok and the Knowheremen, with Bzermikitokolok played by Rhett Miller, Kortobookalia played by Murray Hammond, Sliyavastajoo played by Ken Bethea, and Phloko played by Philip Peeples. Fans of 1990s Texas-based...

The Sanderson Sisters are back! After 29 years, Hocus Pocus 2 is now on Disney+. At the time of the original film’s release, a sequel probably seemed like a total long shot. Critics panned Hocus Pocus, and box office numbers weren’t exactly spectacular either; it’s believed that the film may have lost about 16.5 million in its original theatrical run. Still, Disney continued to air the film annually on the Disney Channel and Freeform (formerly ABC Family), and a generation of kids was practically raised on the spooky season staple.
In October 2018, the 25th anniversary of the film, the first week of Hocus Pocus viewings on Freeform averaged 8.2 million viewers. The film likely became a cult hit due to its tone, which is a bit more adult than the typical live-action Disney fare, and the campy performances of the film’s villains, the Sanderson Sisters, portrayed by Bette Midler,...

Forest Whitaker has shed new plot details about Francis Ford Coppola’s mystery project “Megalopolis,” which is set to start shooting in August.
The actor-producer, who is in Cannes to receive the festival’s honorary Palme d’Or, suggested he had a substantial role in the new movie, and spoke favorably of Coppola’s script, which is a long-gestating passion project that’s been in the works for 20 years. Coppola invested more than 100 million of his own resources to make the film, which is his first as a director since 2016’s “Distant Vision.”
“The cast is coming together,” said Whittaker, who praised Coppola as an “amazing filmmaker” that he was excited to work with. The “Last King of Scotland” Oscar winner will star in “Megalopolis” alongside Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel and Jon Voight.

Producer Lynda Obst and Miky Lee (executive producer of “Parasite”) have joined forces to tap into the Korean music wave. They will produce “K-Pop: Lost in America,” a feature-length road movie to be released in 2023.
The Cj Enm production has tapped Jk Youn, director of two of the biggest Korean movies of all time, to helm the project. With disaster action movie “Haeundae” in 2009 and melodrama “Ode to My Father” in 2014, Youn was the first person to direct two films that each scored 10 million admissions, the mark of a mega blockbuster, at the Korean box office.
The narrative in “Lost in America” revolves around a K-pop boy group that mistakenly lands in Texas with only two days left until their global debut in the New York. With no money and little time, they must make their way to New York to perform on their dream stage.

As Forest Whitaker prepares to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Newport Beach Film Festival on June 16, the prolific Academy Award- and Emmy-winning actor with a career spanning four decades says he finds himself increasingly reconnecting with the way he approached the work when he was just starting out.
There’s a “joy when I’m working on a part in the discovery of looking at it and trying to figure out the people,” he says.
For example, he notes that by focusing more deeply on the needs of his “Godfather of Harlem” character, real-life crime boss Bumpy Johnson, the character itself leads the way to his performance.
“That’s the way I was working before,” he says. “I started to go back to basics sometimes, and it’s making things more exciting for me again.”

If you're in need of a new teen-centric series to binge-watch while you're waiting for Outer Banks to return, then Panic may be for you. Adapted from Lauren Oliver's bestselling novel of the same name, the Amazon Prime Video series takes place in Carp, TX, following a group of recent high-school grads as they participate in their town's legendary (and deadly) annual games. Unlike Outer Banks, the series isn't actually based in a real place - and in fact, the fictional town of Carp is located in a totally different state in Oliver's book.
During a June interview with Cbr, Oliver explained why she decided to change Carp's location from Upstate New York to Texas for the TV adaptation. According to her, they started to film the pilot in Upstate New York back in 2018, but they ended up having to shut down production due to terrible weather. That's when...

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

The first time Harry Connick Jr. stepped onto the Hollywood Walk of Fame was almost by accident. It was his first visit to Los Angeles, and he was en route to a session at the iconic Capitol Records Tower, just a few steps from the Walk of Fame’s epicenter at Hollywood and Vine.
“When you’re actually walking down that street and see all those names — Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart — you realize that these people walked down these same streets; that they’ve had some of the same feelings that you’re having as a young performer,” Connick says.
The New Orleans native’s trademark Southern drawl has lightened since those early days, though his rich, smooth baritone hasn’t. “It just kind of makes it real. For somebody like me who has such a deep respect for the entertainment business, it’s a really big deal.

Sandra Bullock got creative when she broke the news to Harry Connick Jr. that he had scored a part in the 1998 romantic comedy Hope Floats.
“It was one of the first movies I did,” Connick Jr., 51, recalled on The Graham Norton Show. “I really wanted to do this part. It was between me and some other guy.”
He was nervous about his chances of landing the role. Connick Jr. explained, “Sandra told me, ‘The guy that I’m really thinking about is this cowboy from Texas.’ And the part was a cowboy from Texas. I said, ‘There’s no way I’m gonna get it.

Sandra Bullock is a 2018 E! People's Choice Awards finalist, and we are freaking out about it! The 54-year-old actress is one of five ladies battling it out for the title of Female Movie Star of 2018 and we have a feeling it's going to be a tight race. Over the years, we've come to love Bullock in a variety of roles such as Birdee Pruitt in Hope Floats, Gracie Hart in Miss Congeniality and most recently as Debbie Ocean in Ocean's 8. While the Oscar-winning actress has done pretty much every genre at this point this heist film mixed both her comedic timing with more of her dramatic chops for the ultimate movie role. It was the star's ability to make us believe that she could...

When it comes to memorable movie roles, Sandra Bullock's had quite a few. She's been a bus-driving action hero (Speed), an undercover beauty queen (Miss Congeniality), a tough-talking football mom (The Blind Side) and a doctor stranded in space (Gravity). Sufjan Stevens contributed two highly acclaimed tunes to the “Call Me by Your Name” soundtrack, with both “Mystery of Love” and “Visions of Gideon” considered likely nominees for the Academy Award for Best Original Song. To hear the indie-rock icon tell it, he almost had another in the mix this fall: “Tonya Harding,” which, despite his efforts, bears no relation to “I, Tonya.”
Margot Robbie stars as the disgraced figure skater in Craig Gillespie’s biopic, which has earned strong reviews since premiering in Toronto and opens later this month. Stevens writes on his website that he’s “been trying to write a Tonya Harding song since I was 15” and that the final product is “not at all related to the new biopic” because he “sent it to the music supervisors but they couldn’t find a way to use it.”

Stevens writes on his website that he’s “been trying to write a Tonya Harding song since I was 15” and that the final product is “not at all related to the new biopic” because he “sent it to the music supervisors but they couldn’t find a way to use it.”

When Allison Janney watched Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan compete in the 1994 Olympics — along with 126 million others — she had no idea that she’d eventually earn her first Oscar buzz for playing Harding’s mother. Most of those viewers tuned in because weeks prior, Harding’s ex-husband and bodyguard arranged for an attacker to club Kerrigan’s knee with a police baton. But for Janney, it was personal: few know that she was once a serious figure skater herself, sidelined from the sport by a freak accident that occurred when her parents hosted a party.
“There was a game where couples had balloons tied around their ankles and you tried to pop the other couples’ balloons,” said Janney, who portrays Lavona Golden in Craig Gillespie’s “I, Tonya.” “I was cheating, and had my balloon tied around my knee, because I had a strapless long dress on. Cheaters never prosper!

There’s little on screenwriter Steven Rogers’ resume to indicate that he was interested in writing something like “I, Tonya,” the year’s most irreverent – and unexpectedly inspiring – biopic that follows the exploits of one of America’s signature fallen stars. After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September (where Neon and 30West acquired it for 2017 release), the film has steadily picked up awards steam, particularly for the mother-daughter performances of Allison Janney and Margot Robbie, who are both nominated for Critics’ Choice and Indie Spirit awards.
“I’m loving this,” Rogers said with a laugh. “Because you don’t get it on every movie, so when you do get it, you just hold it closely. Never one time, ever, when I started to write about Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly, did I think about awards season. The whole experience has been kind of miraculous.”
Rogers isn’t exaggerating.

The I, Tonya red band trailer has arrived, showing Margot Robbie as the scourge of the figure skating world, Tonya Harding.
Update: Here's a red band trailer for the film, that obviously you shouldn't watch if you have sensitive eyes and ears...
The upcoming dark/comedic biopic, I, Tonya, looks to capture the period when the Winter Olympics, and the skating in particular, captured the attention of the world. In this case with Margot Robbie playing the scandal-conjuring Olympic figure skater, Tonya Harding.
The first I, Tonya teaser trailer has now arrived, focusing on Margot Robbie’s onscreen manifestation of former American Olympic figure skating prospect Tonya Harding, whose dreams of grabbing the gold led to one of the most ignominious events in Olympic history. The sight of Robbie’s Harding performing a triple axel (Harding was the first American woman to successfully land one in competition,...

If you watched Parenthood back in the day, then you're probably already a fan of Miles Heizer, but if you're only just starting to obsess over the talented actor, it's probably because you watched him in Netflix's 13 Reasons Why. While we love the fact that he hangs out with his 13 Reasons Why costars in real life - and has a particularly special bond with Brandon Flynn (who plays Justin Foley) - he's also still tight with someone in particular from Parenthood: Mae Whitman. You probably know Mae from her various acting roles from when she was younger, in particular a guest appearance on Friends and her heartbreaking role in Hope Floats alongside Sandra Bullock. Miles and Mae are best friends and roommates, and they often document their hilarious adventures and bond on social media. While some celebrity BFFs are all about staging the most glamorous photos and only sharing...

From Demolition Man and James Bond through to Speed 2 and Steven Seagal: the movies filmmakers took on to get other projects made.
One for the studio, one for yourself? That’s sometimes been the case when it comes to making movies, and we suspect – under the surface – it happens more than we’re ever told. However, every now and then, it becomes clear that someone has signed up for a movie, with getting the film they really, really want to make as the hidden reason. Such as in these cases…
Nigel Hawthorne: Demolition Man
The late, great Nigel Hawthorne wasn't much of a fan of the much-liked Sylvester Stallone-Wesley Snipes showdown, Demolition Man. In his autobiography Straight Face, Hawthorne called the experience of making the film "miserable", and wasn't impressed with the time lost on set waiting around for Stallone and Snipes.

Harry Connick Jr. had two very lovely ladies on his arm while attending the Bridget Jones's Baby premiere in NYC on Monday night: his wife, Jill, and oldest daughter, Georgia! The actor clearly took a page out of Patrick Dempsey's book by making the event a family affair. The trio smiled for photographers as they made their way down the red carpet, and although Harry and Jill's other two daughters, Charlotte and Sarah, didn't attend, Georgia, 20, looked more grown up than ever. The Connick family's appearance comes hot on the heels of the premiere of Harry's new daytime talk show, Harry, where he recently interviewed Hope Floats costar Sandra Bullock about her children. Hopefully this means we'll be seeing a lot more of Harry and his lovely family soon!

Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr. made fans cry with their heartbreaking yet beautiful love story in Hope Floats back in 1998, and as it turns out, the former costars are still close friends. Sandra, who is dating photographer Bryan Randall, stopped by the actor's new daytime talk show Harry as his first guest on Monday's premiere episode, and the two started catching up as if nobody else was in the room. After Harry asked how Sandra's two children, Louis, 6, and Laila, 4, are doing, she said, "Babies are so good! So loud. I have the loudest children on the planet. I don't know if it's the acoustics, but they're amazing. They're just good, funny souls." Sandra and Harry also shared a sweet moment together at the start of their interview when he told her that she's "just as stunning" as the first day they met. Considering the fact that she regularly lights up the room,...

Next month over on streaming giant Netflix offers up a giant selection of films of all stripes — modern to classic, animated to live action, Oscar contender to…not so much — and we’ve picked seven (well, really 11) that you should watch as soon as humanly possible, either for the first time or as part of a nostalgic little binge. Enjoy.
1. “Footloose” (available September 1)
If you’ve never experienced the original “Footloose” — no, not the one starring Miles Teller, though he is quite serviceable in a charming role — do yourself a favor and check out Herbert Ross’ 1984 classic. Yes, the concept of a town outlawing dancing is bizarre and outdated, but Ross and his cast (including Kevin Bacon in the kind of star-making role that’s so rare these days) really sell the concept, thanks to some serious drama and hard-earned emotion. But there is also dancing! It’s joyous and gymnastic and pure,...

Margot Robbie is no ice queen, but she's about to play one. Deadline reported Monday that the actress has signed on to play figure skater Tonya Harding in the upcoming movie I, Tonya. Robbie, who is also producing the biopic through her LuckyChap Entertainment banner, is said to be taking it upon herself to find the film's director. I, Tonya's script hails from Steven Rogers, who wrote Love the Coopers, P.S. I Love You, Kate & Leopold and Hope Floats. Robbie, meanwhile, next appears in The Legend of Tarzan and Suicide Squad. Harding has yet to publicly comment on I, Tonya. Robbie is not the first person to play Harding onscreen, of course. Both Melanie Hutsell and Amy Poehler parodied her on...

This nauseatingly by-the-numbers festive family heartwarmer is an unwanted parcel of predictability
From a producer of The Family Stone, the director of I Am Sam and the writer of Hope Floats (stop screaming at the back) comes this obligatory seasonal star-studded ensemble piece in which a bunch of A-listers plays out a string of intertwining plot threads, all in search of a heavily eggnogged family hug.
At the centre of the box-ticking maelstrom are Diane Keaton and John Goodman as the secretly collapsing couple struggling to give their disparate brood a last hurrah happy Christmas before finally splitting up. Ed Helms is the secretly out-of-work single father in desperate need of a job, Marisa Tomei is the secretly shoplifting sister trying to face up to sibling rivalry, and Olivia Wilde is the black sheep daughter, secretly trying to pass off Jake Lacy’s stranger as her boyfriend. So many secrets!

Christmas may still be a few months away, but Ed Helms, Amanda Seyfried and Diane Keaton will get you right in the spirit with this delightful trailer for Love the Coopers.
There are festive gags a plenty and narration by the legendary Steve Martin in a teaser that explores why we endure herculean challenges to travel home for the holidays.
Between Eleanor (Olivia Wilde) trying to pass off military man Joe (Jake Lacy) as her fiancé and single dad Hank (Ed Helms) wrangling a very sassy daughter, it's sure to be an eventful Christmas for the Coopers this year.
Steven Rogers – of Ps I Love You and Hope Floats fame – penned the festive comedy for director Jessie Nelson.
Nelson's had a varied career thus far, producing another wacky Christmas comedy called Fred Claus and directing the gripping Oscar-nominated drama I Am Sam.

Over the course of film history, we've seen plenty of long-time actors step behind the camera to take up their directorial ambitions. Clint Eastwood did it. Mel Gibson did it. George Clooney did it. What do these three have in commonc Well, for starters, they are all men, so there's that. Further, they are all white, but more on that later. More to the point of the article, these men all eased into their directorial careers by starring in their respective debuts, using their presence on screen to help market their talents off it. And with his feature directorial effort The Water Diviner, which hits limited theaters this week, Russell Crowe is just the most recent addition to a growing list of actors who have decided to try their hand behind the camera. Like Eastwood, Gibson, and Clooney before him, the Best Actor winner stars in his first feature as director,...

(Cbr) You may not know The Birthday Boys, but you’ll definitely recognize quite a few of the faces on "The Birthday Boys," the sketch comedy group’s TV show that returns for a second season tonight at 11:30 on IFC. The Birthday Boys — Jefferson Dutton, Dave Ferguson, Mike Hanford, Tim Kalpakis, Matt Kowalick, Mike Mitchell and Chris VanArtsdalen — started as a stage show at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles, and caught plenty of high-profile attention over the years; notably Bob Odernkirk and Ben Stiller (who have a shared history on sketch comedy with Fox’s short-lived but fondly remembered 1992 series The Ben Stiller Show). Odenkirk and Stiller serve as executive producers on "The Birthday Boys" TV show, with Odenkirk appearing frequently in the show’s first season.
