Before The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Six Feet Under, The Wire, or any of the other popular HBO shows, there was Oz. The one-hour drama chronicled the lives of the staff and inmates at the Oswald State Correctional Facility, a maximum security penitentiary home to the most violent offenders in the state. It’s been over twenty years since the series concluded, but creator Tom Fontana is back with an Oz short film starring Lee Tergesen as Tobias Beecher and Dean Winters as Ryan O’Reily.
Titled Zo, the short film actually premiered at the Atx Festival in 2021, but few people were able to see it. Thankfully, Zo will premiere on YouTube on May 1st, giving fans around the world the chance to finally see it. According to Kirk Acevado, who starred in Oz as Miguel Alvarez, it could even lead to a sequel series if the short film gets enough buzz.

One year after debuting the first look of Wicked at CinemaCon, Universal Pictures brought members of the magical crew to Las Vegas on Wednesday to light up the festivities once again, with the team including filmmaker Jon M. Chu and his leading ladies, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who had the honor of introducing exclusive footage for theater owners.
It was an emotional presentation for the Wicked team as Chu was moved to tears as he recounted finding the two performers to topline the film, and later Grande also got choked up as well.
The electric presentation — which featured on stage remarks from cast members such as Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Chu and producer Marc Platt — was telegraphed from the start as Colosseum staffers handed out Wicked lanyards to attendees when they walked into the theater. Other staffers instructed guests to be careful with tulips placed...

Bowen Yang had quite the emotional ride during his last day on the set of Wicked.
The actor sat down with People to promote the second season of his podcast, Hot White Heist. During the conversation, he opened up about the day he wrapped production on the film adaptation of the famous musical, in which he portrays Pfannee, one of Glinda’s (Ariana Grande) friends.
“Everyone was on this really crazy journey to make these movies, and everyone had different journeys, but I feel like mine was pretty intimately with every other student at Shiz [University], and that included most of the cast,” he told the publication. “My wrap day was really emotional. I got to see Michelle Yeoh, and that was really special.”

Law & Order Svu might be what Chris Meloni is most known for after being cast as Elliot Stabler. But before he was the iconic detective, he played a much different character in Oz. However, going from serial killer to cop wasn’t a smooth transition for the actor.

Meloni’s Oz role was a much different beast than the character he’d become so synonymous with in Svu. On the HBO classic series, he portrayed a disturbed inmate obsessed with killing. Ironically, however, Svu would see him on the other side of the law. Oz would also help Meloni secure the hit show. Speaking with Randee Dawn, he opened up about the long process he went through to earn his Svu part.
“My first audition was with Dick Wolf himself,” Meloni said.

Jonathan Kimble Simmons, aka J.K. Simmons, is the Academy Award-winning actor who first came to fame as a song-and-dance man on Broadway. He then segued to a celebrated career in television and finally began an illustrious film career that has endured for 30+ years.
Simmons was a long-time theater actor — he had a memorable turn on the 1992 Tony broadcast in a striped purple suit raising his jazz hands in a number from “Guys and Dolls” — until he made his way to television and stunned audiences as white supremacist inmate Vern Schillinger in the HBO series “Oz.” Hollywood then came calling, making a big splash in the “Spider-Man” films and capping it off by winning the Oscar, the Golden Globe and the Screen Actors Guild Award for his chilling performance as a music teacher in “Whiplash.” He has since gone on to join the DC and Marvel universes.

Disgraced ex-congressman George Santos may have been expelled from the House of Representatives on Dec. 1 by a vote of 311-114 — but that doesn’t mean it’s the end of the story for the alleged serial grifter and sometimes drag queen from New York. HBO Films has already optioned The Fabulist, a book about Santos’ rise and fall, for adaptation, with Frank Rich and Mike Makowsky (HBO’s Bad Education) attached to executive produce and Makowsky set to write. As for Santos, public opinion seems to think he’ll find a future on Dancing with the Stars — so much so that the show trended on X alongside news of his historic expulsion.
Asked if he would consider competing on the show that has featured the likes of Sean Spicer and House majority leader Tom DeLay (indicted on charges of conspiring to violate political fundraising law), Santos told reporters, “Today, I...

Sarah Michelle Gellar gave us some of the most unforgettable television moments of all time when she starred as Buffy in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," but she wasn't having quite as much fun making the show as the viewers had watching it. Shooting over 140 episodes over seven seasons of a network series is no small feat, and it consumed a lot of time in Gellar's teens and early 20s. That's not to mention series creator Joss Whedon, who was accused of being emotionally abusive on set by several of Gellar's co-stars.
Her fellow series regulars recognized the level of pressure she was under as the star of the show. Her co-star Alyson Hannigan, who played Buffy's best friend, Willow, remembered that Gellar started to run out of steam early on, which the star herself later admitted. So when Andy Cohen asked the "How I Met Your Mother" actress what season...

“Quiz Lady” scribe Jen D’Angelo said she was inspired by the game shows she watched growing up — particularly “Jeopardy!” and its charismatic host, the late Alex Trebek.
In the new comedy feature, Awkwafina plays Anne, a young woman obsessed with the long-running game show “Can’t Stop the Quiz.” She enlists the help of Jenny (Sandra Oh) — her estranged, wannabe actress sister — to help cover their mother’s gambling debts. When Anne’s beloved dog is kidnapped by debt collectors, they hatch a plan to have Anne get on “Can’t Stop the Quiz” and win the cash prize, if she can get over her social anxiety and adoration for host Terry McTeer (Will Ferrell).
TheWrap caught up with writer Jen D’Angelo before “Quiz Lady’s” Nov. 3 premiere on Hulu, where she shared her love of game shows and how Ferrell’s character was an homage to late “Jeopardy” host Alex Trebek,...

Bye-bye, Peak TV. After more than a decade of unprecedented production growth, the international television industry is bracing for an era of tighter budgets and more bean counting.
“Instead of subscriber growth at all costs, now the focus is on production and investment and getting the balance sheet right,” says Cathy Payne, CEO of Banijay Rights, the sales arm of the production giant behind reality TV hits Big Brother and high-end dramas Peaky Blinders and Black Mirror. “I hate using the phrase because everyone says it, but the focus now is on ‘fewer, better, bigger shows.’ ”
The variety of shows on offer at this year’s global TV market in Cannes, MIPCOM, suggests every buyer, at every budget, should find something to fill their slots. And while THR’s annual hot list of the market’s best new drama series ranges from a by-the-book NBC procedural to an erotic comedy...

In what fans then thought was the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series finale, Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her sister Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg) stood above an ethereal portal readying to kickstart the apocalypse. Before sacrificing herself to save the world (again), Buffy tells her sister, "The hardest thing in this world is to live in it." However, the Scooby Gang resurrected Buffy at the start of season 6 -- allowing the show to run for two more seasons. But Buffy's message still applies: Life isn't easy, but we can't give up fighting for change.
Even as Buffy battles vamps and demons, she's our guide through life's challenges. "Buffy" transitioned seamlessly from tackling high school problems to adult-sized issues over its seven seasons. Everyone has a little Buffy Summers in them: She represents invisible strength, ingenuity, and perseverance. Final girls have always been a source of hope and inspiration for audiences, but...

Colin Farrell has been doing some of the most interesting work of his career in the last few years, with his roles in "The Batman" and "The North Water" showing off his transformational ability and "The Banshees of Inisherin" reuniting him with "In Bruges" writer-director Martin McDonagh for a film that is already gaining Oscar buzz. He's also got his own Penguin-centric HBO Max spin-off series on the way, so if you're ready for more Spanish lessons and/or old-time gangster-like "sweethearts," it sounds like the series will be serving as a direct continuation of that mode of Oswald Cobblepot, picking up right where "The Batman" left off.
In an interview with Extra (via Variety), Farrell elaborated on the timeline for "The Penguin," saying, "It starts about a week after 'The Batman' ends, so Gotham is still, somewhat, underwater. I read the first script of the first...

Lynch/Oz Review: Tracing The Populist Surrealism Of David Lynch And Movie Americana [Fantastic Fest]
During a New York Film Festival Q&a for "Mulholland Drive," David Lynch was asked about the influence of "The Wizard of Oz" on his film. Lynch, who can often be hilariously evasive when it comes to questions, actually got earnest and replied: "There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about the 'Wizard of Oz.'" Director Karyn Kusama was in the audience for that Q&a, and recounts the story in "Lynch/Oz," Alexandre O. Philippe's attempt to connect Lynch's surreal worlds to the classic "The Wizard of Oz." It's not an outlandish premise, since "Oz" clearly has influenced Lynch for years — there are full-blown references to it littered through his films, most notably "Wild at Heart." As Lynch himself says in his MasterClass, "The Wizard of Oz" is a "film that has caused people to dream for decades."

After years of making a name for himself in New York theater, Mark Ruffalo was on the cusp of breaking in to high-profile movie roles when television came calling.
In 1999, Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson had been handed a 13-episode order from Upn for a cop drama “The Beat.” Fontana and casting director Alexa Fogel had been impressed by Ruffalo’s work on stage and recruited him to co-star in the series as the hotheaded ladies-man New York City beat cop Zane Marinelli.
Fontana and Levinson’s track record with NBC’s indelible “Homicide: Life on the Street” and HBO’s arresting “Oz” lent credibility to “The Beat.” The show promised to be envelope-pushing, if only because nobody was watching Upn anyway. The pilot was directed by Levinson. Ruffalo had more than a few shirtless scenes in the early episodes.
“Tom had seen me in plays and was a fan.

Though “The Plot Against America” took its time to get going, it’s full steam ahead for David Simon’s Philip Roth adaptation by Episode 4 — but to what end? With just two episodes to go, the drama has certainly flared up: The Levin familial bonds are being pushed to the brink as Sandy falls increasingly under Lindbergh’s spell, with the help of Aunt Evelyn and her new boyfriend Rabbi Bengelsdorf. The lines have been drawn, and it’s not looking good for either side. While this was by far the most exciting episode so far, it still feels as though Simon is obligingly following Roth’s outline rather than forging his own path.
In both the novel and the series “The Plot Against America,” there’s an unmentioned but implicit rhetorical question reaching out from beyond the page and screen. To borrow from the musical “Cabaret,” one of the...

Grocery shopping in the time of coronavirus just got one step more complicated.
According to Dr. Mehmet Oz and his correspondent Mara Schiavocampo, making the harrowing trip to the supermarket is only half the battle. Now, you have to disinfect your groceries, too.
“You know Dr. Oz, this takes me much longer than my normal routine. What you used to take five minutes of unpacking groceries now takes twenty minutes,” Schiavocampo said. “But, food is really the only thing that we are bringing in from the outside and we know that the virus can live on cardboard for up to twenty-four hours, and on plastic, up to two to three days. So I’m taking these precautions very seriously.”

Leigh Whannell’s Sydney-shot The Invisible Man easily won the box office derby in Australia last weekend, matching its top-ranked Us debut.
Meanwhile Tony Tilse’s Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears had a mid-range opening although exhibitors are expecting a leggy run thanks to word-of-mouth.
Among the alternate content releases, Universal’s Les Misérables: The Staged Concert did Ok while Australian animated adventure The Wishmas Tree struggled against the third weekend of Paramount’s hit Sonic the Hedgehog.
The top 20 titles generated almost $10 million, 11 per cent down on the previous frame but 3 per cent ahead of the same weekend last year, according to Numero. Exhibitors say there is no discernible impact yet from the coronavirus.

Renee Zellweger is poised to win her second Oscar on February 9 for uncannily transforming into Judy Garland for the biopic “Judy.” She notoriously never won an Academy Award, so Zellweger might be able to somewhat avenge that oversight. The film focuses on the final months in the life of the troubled multi-talent, as she performs to sold-out crowds in London in the winter of 1968. To celebrate, let’s take a look back at 20 of Garland’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Considered by many to be one of the greatest entertainer of the 20th century, Garland was indeed a triple threat. Known as the little girl (she was only 4’11) with the big voice, Garland also held her own with such great dancers as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire although she had no formal training in that area, and was Oscar-nominated twice in acting categories.

One of the greatest performers of her, or any generation really, Alice Krige has given us endless entertainment to enjoy for nearly 40 years now. From Chariots of Fire to Ghost Story to Star Trek: First Contact to Sleepwalkers to Silent Hill to Thor: The Dark World, without a doubt, Krige has proven herself time and time again to be in a class all her own.
Krige’s latest role is in Osgood Perkins’ Gretel & Hansel, in which she plays The Witch, who befriends the titular characters (played by Sophia Lillis and Samuel Leakey), but has sinister plans in mind for the siblings, who are unaware that their host isn’t exactly as she seems. The Grammy winning duo of Method Man and Mary J. Blige are reuniting for Starz’s Power spinoff.
Having scored the award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group back in 1996 with the iconic Mary J, the Wu-Tang Clan founding member is now joining the Mudbound actress in the cast of Power Book II.

For Vicki Madden, Blake Ayshford, Glendyn Ivin and no doubt myriad other content creators, the challenge is to find unique Australian stories which resonate internationally and can cut through the worldwide glut of English-language drama.
More broadly, Madden calls for more respect for writers from some producers and networks, telling If: “At times there is too much interference and the stories become bland and impersonal.”
Ayshford welcomes increasing collaboration between experienced writers and newer voices and predicts: “I think the next few years could be transformational for our industry and usher in a new generation of voices and stories.”
Ivin is excited by the competition from streaming services but wonders how many consumers can afford to spend more than $100 a month to subscribe to multiple platforms.
However Ivin, the director of The Cry, Safe Harbour and Penguin Bloom, the...

Sam Mendes’ WW1 epic 1917, which ranks fourth in the betting for the best picture Oscar, opened in top spot in Australia last weekend and was No. 1 in the Us.
The pundits polled by Gold Derby have the Amblin/DreamWorks production at odds of 8/1, behind Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood at 7/1 and Martin Scorcese’s The Irishman and Boon Joon Ho’s Parasite, both at 15/2.
The odds for best film, director and other categories may well change tomorrow when the Academy Awards nominations are announced.
In Oz the new releases including Roadshow’s My Spy, Studiocanal’s A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon and Indian imports Darbar, Sarileru Neekevvaru, Ala Vaikunthapurramloo and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior kept ticket sales at a healthy level.
The top 20 titles generated $23.8 million, down 10 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero. Nationwide, the calendar 2019 grosses totaled $1.22 billion,...

Oz Pearlman, a 37-year-old mentalist from New York City, previously came in third place on “America’s Got Talent” Season 10, but now he’s back as one of the 40 acts cast in “Agt: The Champions” Season 2. Brian Walsh.
For Brian Walsh, 2020 shapes as the most competitive year for the broadcast and streaming sector since the inception of television in Australia in 1956.
There will be casualties among the new entrants but ultimately the viewers will be the winners, predicts Walsh, Foxtel’s executive director of TV, one of the few who were there when the pay TV company launched in 1995.
“The landscape will be the most competitive since the start of television as we see the new players consolidate their positions for consumers in Australia,” he says. “Like all competition, it will bring out the best in everyone. When you have robust competition the winner will be the customer.”
While he expects Disney+ to draw a sizable audience here, particularly among young families, he predicts: “There won’t be an endless array of Ott services that will have the same success as Netflix, Disney and Amazon. There...
