“Images of a Nordic Drama,” the debut documentary by Oscar-nominated Norwegian director Nils Gaup, has debuted its teaser trailer, ahead of its international premiere at Hot Docs.
The film follows art collector Haakon Mehren who faces unexpected resistance while championing the work of an unknown Norwegian artist after finding a cache of paintings in a barn.
Despite success abroad, the undiscovered work of Aksel Waldemar Johannessen, a contemporary of Edvard Munch, takes nearly three decades to launch in Norway. The painter’s depictions of prostitutes and drunks living in miserable poverty offend the aesthetics of Norway’s art establishment and challenge the canon to the point of sabotaging his rediscovery.
Gaup said that he decided to make the film after visiting an Edvard Munch art exhibition in a museum in Vienna in 2009. “There I discovered some paintings by an unknown Norwegian artist – Aksel Waldemar Johannesen. I had never heard of...

Amazon’s Prime Video platform will broadcast the Australian Swimming Championships, in Adelaide next month, as part of a two-year deal with Swimming Australia. The company will use a roster of celebrity commentators to give a high profile to its continuing foray into the sports sector.
The deal with Swimming Australia is the first partnership Amazon has had in Australia for sports, other than sports documentaries.
The streaming giant has a patchwork of sportscasting in other territories – in India, for example it currently has a mixture women’s basketball and some cricket, having previously carried major tennis tournaments and English soccer. It finds itself in competition with incumbent free-tv channels, pay-tv operators for which live sports is a lifeblood, and a growing number of specialist sports streamers.

Avril Lavigne has recruited Nicki Minaj for the power pop kiss-off “Dumb Blonde.” Lavigne’s sixth album, Head Above Water, will be released on February 15th.
On “Dumb Blonde,” Lavigne reflects on the idea that people might think she’s not as smart as she is based on the way she looks. “I’m a babe/I’m a boss/And I’m makin’ this money,” she sings on the pre-chorus. “I can flip like a switch and I cut like a blade.” When Minaj joins for her guest verse,...

I’ll never forget seeing “Rent” for the first time. My mom used to bring me to shows in New York, so I was used to “Phantom of the Opera” and “Cats,” which are great, but hadn’t really hit home as an artist. “Rent” was the most inspiring musical I had ever seen.
When I was 16 or 17 I was on a trip to New York with my girlfriend at the time and her mother, who was a really devout, reads the bible every day Christian woman. I knew nothing about “Rent” and I was in charge of picking the play. It is obviously a show about AIDS and a gay relationship, and especially at that time, it was a barrier — something that people didn’t really talk about. I brought this woman, and she was terrified, and I was like, “Oh no, what have I done!?” But for me,...

In the run-up to the UniFrance Rendez-Vous in Paris, the rising sales company Charades has added three French films to its slate, “My Traitor, My Love,” a war romance-drama; “Lost And Found,” a romantic comedy; and “The Girl With a Bracelet,” a family drama.
Directed by Helier Cisterne (“Vandal”), “My Traitor, My Love” (pictured) opens in 1956 in Algeria, at a time when it was a French colony. The film stars hot French actor Vincent Lacoste (“Amanda”) and Vicky Krieps (“Phantom Thread”) as Fernand and Helene, a young couple madly in love whose destiny will be irrevocably changed by the outbreak of the Algerian War of Independence. Fernand is an activist figting for independence alongside the Algerians. The film was penned by Katell Quillévéré (“Heal the Living”) and Cisterne whose feature debut “Vandal” won the Louis Delluc Prize in 2013.

Avril Lavigne, “Tell Me It’s Over”
Sounds like: A former pop-punk princess all grown up
Perfect for: Completely checking out of a relationship
Avril Lavigne is priming herself — and us — for a big, surprising 2019 comeback. The soulful, Billie Holiday-inspired “Tell Me It’s Over” is the second new song we’ve heard off her sixth album, Head Above Water, and it shows a different side of Lavigne than the redemption narrative of the title track. After years of battling Lyme Disease,...

A teaser has just been released from the pilot episode for a new paranormal comedy titled Cursed, from Head Above Water creator Connor Fairclough and award-winning producer Tristan Barr, that parodies the clichés and techniques typically found in the horror genre, similar in style to Shaun of the Dead. Shot with the intention of an online release, Cursed draws influence and satirises such horror films as The Conjuring, It, The Nun, and Annabelle.
The story follows Isaac (Kyle McCallion), who releases a curse on himself after fiddling with a Ouija Board one drunken night. Through each episode, he and his useless housemate Ned (Omar Al-Sobky) must deal with countless paranormal hauntings whilst managing their daily mundane lives.
Ever been interrupted by an interdimensional force of evil whilst on the toilet? Or had to take responsibility of a possessed doll when you haven’t even mastered personal responsibility? Had to distance...

My, what a strange season of Dancing With the Stars it has been.
Before the reality competition kicked off its 27th season back in September, I took a stab at predicting how the weekly eliminations would shake out — and boy, was I so wrong. (A Juan Pablo Di Pace/DeMarcus Ware final two? That’s something out of an alternate universe.)
While frontrunners like Tinashe and Juan Pablo were eliminated earlier than expected, fan favorites like Grocery Store Joe and Bobby Bones defied the odds and survived each cut, resulting in one of the show’s most unpredictable seasons ever.

“Watch out for Avril Lavigne,” says our forum poster Karl Villalobos about the upcoming Grammy race. Canadian singer-songwriter Lavigne released her new single “Head Above Water” on September 19, just 11 days before the end of Grammy eligibility on September 30. And she premiered a new music video to go along with it on September 27 (watch it above). It’s her first new single since 2015, and her upcoming album will be her first since 2013. But can it really get her back into the Grammy race? She hasn’t been nominated in 14 years, and she has yet to win.
Lavigne was a teenager when she broke out in the early 2000s, but the Grammys were quick to take notice. She was nominated eight times over the span of two years, including a bid for Best New Artist (2003) and two noms for Song of the Year. But she subsequently fell off the awards radar despite...

Avril Lavigne's first single in five years will blow fans out of the water. After weeks of social media promotion, Lavigne just released "Head Above Water" from her upcoming album. She co-wrote the ballad with Travis Clarke and Stephan Moccio, its producer. In a letter to her fans published last week, she wrote, "I spent the last few years at home sick fighting Lyme Disease. Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles. I was able to turn that fight into music I'm really proud of. I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly....

Avril Lavigne recounts her battle with Lyme disease on “Head Above Water,” her first new song in five years.
The power ballad finds Lavigne belting over a steady-building mix of piano, strings, synths and thunderous drums. In the lyrics, Lavigne searches for hope and faith while her body fights the disease, and she injects a potent urgency into her voice as she sings, “God keep my head above water/ I lose my breath at the bottom/ Come rescue me, I’ll be waiting/ I’m too young to fall asleep.

Let’s see… the Transformers: Dark of the Moon soundtrack… here’s the track-listing… Linkin Park… Paramore… My Chemical Romance… Staind… yup, all seems fine. No problems here whatsoever. Everything is absolutely a-okay… wait… what’s that… I actually have to listen to it… oh God… oh my sweet Lord… Optimus Prime have mercy on us all… but mainly me.
Here then, dear friends, into the breach do I doth go, like. And who should I meet there, but Linkin Park. Yeah, no need for high-fives, fellas. Certainly not when you’re sounding a bit like Coldplay. Although if Iridescent and its football terrace choir are predictably bad, then Paramore’s Monster is, in contrast, a minor guilty pleasure – catchy, and with a decent vocal from Hayley Williams. The surprises don’t end there either: I last heard My Chemical Romance on a movie soundtrack butchering Bob Dylan in the...

Hello there, you cretinous masses of worthless goo. Here's a few things for you to read before getting back to your miserable, worthless existences.
Remember how some of us were sort of excited, or at least interested, after watching the newest Transformers: Dark Of The Moon trailer? Well, never let it be said that Michael Bay won't find a way to let you down. If you've watched the first two movies, you know that Baynis has an inexplicable link with nu-metal buffoons Linkin Park, a band who you could probably add up their entire discography to make maybe one half-decent album (not counting Collision Course, which is actually quite good but mostly because of Jay-z and Mike Shinoda). Anyway, here's the soundtrack listing. It's an absolute shit show:
1. Linkin Park - Iridescent
2. Paramore - Monster
3. My Chemical Romance - The Only Hope For Me Is You
4. Taking Back Sunday -...

Why should you buy the soundtracks of Christopher Young? Well, for instance the music is quite good on some of them. And if you want to have more fun with the release, check out the tracklisting. You're bound to find somehing along the lines of "Accelerated Brundle Disease" or "Dancing With a Wet Handkerchief on Your Mother's Grave". But wait, there's more! The CD of Hush for intance contains the following titles: "Hush", "Little Baby", "Don't You Cry", "Mama's Gonna Buy", "You", "A". It's all fun. If you pay close attention, you might also find that several Young releases contain pun homages to famous composers as well. Below I've gathered all I could find, now it's up to you to guess which composers are referenced in the track titles. I might add that some of them are only guesses and I couldn't find references some of Young's biggest works...
