Filmmaker Don Bluth is underrated as it is, and so is this movie. Usually, when people think of penguins in movies, they think of Happy Feet or maybe Surf's Up, but The Pebble and the Penguin (1995) is an overlooked gem that has been passed over and was claimed by critics at the time of its release to be terrible. I'm here to debunk all of that. The story starts out with an introverted penguin named Hubie, voiced by Martin Short, who longs to marry his love Marina, Annie Golden, by offering her a pebble as a penguin mating ritual and custom. However, an evil Gaston-like penguin named Drake, Tim Curry, demands that Hubie give him the pebble, but when he refuses, Drake tosses him...

There's nothing like a Don Bluth animated film. From the wide-eyed whimsy of his characters to his confusing, dreamlike sequences, the work of this animation icon has delighted (and terrified) audiences since the release of "The Secret of Nimh." Some 40 years later, Bluth's filmography has grown to contain some of the most fascinating hand-drawn animated projects Hollywood has ever seen. From nostalgic classics like "An American Tail" and "The Land Before Time" to truly odd flops like "A Troll in Central Park" and "Rock-a-Doodle," the list goes on and on. That begs the question, which films rank as the best examples of Bluth's talents?
From the not-so-great to the ones that continue to make us smile, we'll dive deep into Don Bluth's theatrically released feature films. Sure, there are projects he worked on outside of that specific medium (including direct-to-video projects and video games) To correctly examine this filmmaker, it's...

“How to Train Your Dragon” director Dean DeBlois grew up wanting to be a comic-book artist. After meandering his way through fine-arts classes at Sheridan College for a year, however, he managed to get into the school’s summer animation program, where he found his calling.
“Animation had everything I love about comic books — you design your world and your characters, tell your story — but it was brought to life and could reach a worldwide audience in a way that I didn’t think comic books could,” says DeBlois, who is being honored by Variety as a Billion Dollar Director.
As that first summer came to a close, he submitted his portfolio to Hinton Animation Studios, where he started out as an “inbetweener” on the hand-drawn TV series “Raccoons,” later transitioning into the layout department for Hinton’s first feature, “The Nutcracker Prince.”

For the kids, a fleet of toe-tapping, tune-trouncing penguins will go on a wild adventure, while a vampire will marry his teen bride to the delight of Twihards and teen girls everywhere. Finally, a ruggedly handsome but lonely father will face a cruel twist of fate with a grim sense of humor that’s sure to amuse adults. But if all this animated fun, lusty romance and pensive drama isn’t enough to satisfying your cinema cravings, we’ve got you covered with a new list of tantalizing titles now available online.

Another wimpy week for Blu Ray releases, But I Promise You There Is Light At The End Of This Expensive Tunnel! Aside from the films I will list, The Tree of Life is coming out, and from what I have heard, it’s da bomb! There are a few bitchin’ titles coming out though, so no need to be upset at the lack of proper volume this week. You can also pick up your copy of The Pebble and the Penguin, shit, I can’t think of anymore 90s catchphrases.
The Bad Seed
Based of the novel of the same name, this old school horror film will bring back memories of when society did not trust the next generation of rabble-rousers. I am certain that the transfer will make this gem shine brighter than ever. “A basket full of kisses, a basket full of hugs.”

[1] The endearingly geeky, impressively fast-talking Fine Brothers are at it again. The same guys who managed to sum up nearly five decades of Doctor Who [2] in six minutes and every single Best Picture winner through 2009 [3] in five minutes have now released "50 Animated Spoilers in 3 Minutes." (Spoiler alert: They actually make it in two minutes and thirty seconds. But I guess "50 Animated Spoilers in 2 Minutes and 30 Seconds" just doesn't have the same ring to it.) The Fines don't discriminate when it comes to ruining endings -- the video touches upon everything from enduring childhood classics like An American Tail and adult-oriented favorites like South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut to long-forgotten endeavors like Fluppy Dogs. Watch the video after the jump. If you're wondering why no Disney classics were included in "50 Animated Spoilers," it's because the Fine Brothers have already put out a whole other video containing "50 Disney Spoilers in 3 Minutes.

Before we get to the meat of the article, it should most definitely be highlighted that Seasons 1-3 of Breaking Bad are now available to stream via Netflix. The surprise announcement adds a show that would most definitely appear in the top 5 of our list of the Best TV Shows on Netflix Instant Watch.
As you may have recently heard, Netflix and Starz were unable to reach an agreement to renew their contract, so all of the “Starz Play” movies will no longer be available to stream beginning February 28th of 2012.
It’s a sizeable loss for Netflix, and a potential signal of rough waters ahead for the company. Netflix offered Starz $300 million but they wouldn’t take it. Given how limited Starz library is, it’s a relatively surprising move. Here’s my opinion: don’t get mad at Netflix, they’re doing everything they can to have a...
