Funny Bones director Peter Chelsom had given up on Hollywood and went to Italy to make a low-budget thriller. To his – and everyone else’s – surprise, it’s a worldwide hit
I have to admit that Netflix terrified me. As a viewer, of course, I was hooked. As a film-maker, I was pretending to be cool about that fact that I had not been asked to join the party. I’d only directed films for cinemas, never anything for a streaming platform. I am aware of the endless debates. Is Netflix a force for good? Are you in favour of the motion or against? Vote yes or no.
The thing is, there is no “yes” in movies. You might find a Y in your wet-weather gear pocket on day three when you’re already a full day behind schedule. Or an E under your pillow when you wake up the...

The late comedy star came to the seaside town in the 90s to star in my film Funny Bones. Working with him was a masterclass in comic acting – and in charm
We wrote Funny Bones with four actors in mind: Jerry Lewis, Leslie Caron, George Carl and Freddie Davies. As hardly ever happens, none of them died, and they all said yes.
I first met Jerry in Las Vegas, where we rehearsed. Walking through the crowded gambling floor of a Vegas casino with Jerry, the reactions ranged from hysteria to the shock that comes with seeing a ghost. He’s alive! Very much alive. (In fact, he was a very sprightly 69.)

Las Vegas – For Jerry Lewis, the “King of Comedy” wasn’t just a mere nickname, but an apt description for his long career and influence. He went from being the most popular entertainer of an era, to notable and studied filmmaker, to charity spokesperson and finally to comic legend. Jerry Lewis died in Las Vegas on August 20th, 2017. He was 91.
When the gawky 19 year-old Lewis met the suave singer Dean Martin in 1946, little did they know that they would become the most popular act in America for several years. Their box office draw was white-hot, so much so that neither of them could keep up with the blur of what happened to them. They eventually broke up at the height of their fame in 1956, during which Martin famously said, “Jer, when I look at you, all I see is a dollar sign.” The second phase of Lewis’s career would be about his prolific filmmaking,...

I annoyed Jerry Lewis once by asking him about The Day the Clown Cried, a movie he starred in and directed in 1972, and then refused to release. "It's awful," said Lewis of the Holocaust drama in which he starred as a circus clown who entertains Jewish children as he leads them to their deaths in Nazi gas chambers. Why not show it and let the world decide? "I'm ashamed of it," Lewis told me flatly. When I pressed him, he flashed a look that could be subtitled "End of Discussion.

By the late 1970s, Jerry Lewis was becoming perilously close to being a has-been. After decades of celebrity – first in his successful partnership with Dean Martin, then later on his own as the star of comedies like Rock-a-Bye Baby and as the auteur behind epochal hits such as The Nutty Professor – the gifted comic filmmaker and host of the annual Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy telethon started experiencing a series of stumbles. He shelved his much-ballyhooed drama The Day the Clown Cried, about a German clown living in the Nazi concentration camps,...

Versatile, innovative and controversial, Jerry Lewis leaves a legacy of laughs and charity work.
Jerry Lewis, the legendary comedian, actor, singer and philanthropist, has died at the age of 91.
Lewis is as well known for starring and directing films like The Nutty Professor, Cinderfella, and The Bellboy as he is for his marathon fundraising telethons on Us TV for Muscular Dystrophy. He first found fame with his legendary ten-year partnership with Dean Martin.
Lewis paired with Dean Martin in 1946. Starting in nightclubs, Martin and Lewis moved their way through almost countless radio shows and made 16 movies. The pair costarred in such films as My Friend Irma (1949), At War With the Army (1950), Sailor Beware (1952), The Caddy (1953), Living It Up (1954), You’re Never Too Young (1955), and Artists And Models (1955). The last movie they made together was Hollywood Or Bust (1956).

American comedy star Jerry Lewis has died of natural causes, aged 91.
The star of The Nutty Professor and The Bellboy was surrounded by his family when he passed away at his Las Vegas home.
Lewis was an entertainer whose roots stretched back to Vaudeville and who made his name with his onscreen partnership alongside Dean Martin. The duo made a string of 16 hit films in the Fifties, including Sailor Beware and The Stooge.
He returned to the screen in later life in films including The King of Comedy and Funny Bones.
Off-screen, he became known as a charity fundraiser, hosting an annual Muscular Dystrophy telethon, for which he raised millions of dollars.
In recent years, he came under fire for continuing to tell racist and misogynist jokes and he was forced to apologise for making a anti-gay slur during the 2007 telethon. He also battled an addiction to prescription drugs.
He is survived.

Asa Butterfield chats to us about making The Space Between Us, and his desire to do a slasher movie...
In UK cinemas this week is the extremely long-distance romance, The Space Between Us. This one stars Asa Butterfield as a Martian – a human being, in this case, born on Mars – who comes to Earth for the first time and gets into some scrapes alongside Britt Robertson as the girl he has been flirting with online. The film was directed by Peter Chelsom, of Hear My Voice and Funny Bones, and mixes its drama and comedy with a nice sense of scope and some sci-fi shenanigans.
Butterfield is one of the film's strongest assets, now about eight times the height he must have been during the production of Hugo and picking up acting experience at an amazing rate. I sat down with him to speak about the film,...

Space – the final Ya-romance frontier. Having already used vampirism, lycanthropy, terminal diseases, time travel, dystopic futures and a televised to-the-death competition as obstacles to young love, the genre would seem to have nowhere left to go – at which point the makers of this sci-fi tearjerker looked to the cosmos and thought, "A-ha!" The fault is not in our stars, people. The fault is our stars.
Gardner (Asa Butterfield) is a typical 16-year-old brainiac, the kind who spends his days tinkering in robotics, endlessly rewatching Wings of Desire and Dm-ing with his female misfit counterpart.

Blackpool, Lee Evans, Jerry Lewis and Oliver Platt converge in Funny Bones. Here's why it's a film worth seeking out.
"Why do all the best things in life belong to the past?"
It seems a strange thing to be obsessed about, it wasn't a franchise, and didn't come with much buzz, but when Peter Chelsom's Funny Bones was released in 1995 I instantly latched on to it. It didn't even receive a general release in the cinemas around my area. It was released during that period when you had to check the local newspaper adverts to discover the cinema times. Disappointingly it didn't appear, not until a few weeks later when it had just one showing, on a Thursday night. I'd been talking about the film for ages to my brother, who was now at university, and once I found that it was screening I practically begged...

Jerry Lewis’ last starring role was in Peter Chelsom’s 1995 film “Funny Bones” as George Fawkes, a comedy legend with a comedian son who struggles to impress him. Now, the actual comedy legend returns over twenty years later for the new film “Max Rose,” about an aging jazz pianist who begins to examine his life. In the film, Max discovers that his beautiful wife Eva (Claire Bloom) might be having an affair. Believing his entire life to be a lie, he embarks on an exploration of his past in order to find inner peace. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below featuring Max and his retirement home friends jamming out to the music of their youth.

Three years after its Cannes debut, the familial drama Max Rose will finally arrive in theaters next month. The film — written and directed by Daniel Noah — is somewhat of a landmark, as it makes the first live-action performance of Jerry Lewis since 1995’s Funny Bones. The legendary actor and comedian stars as a jazz pianist named Max who discovers his wife, Eva, days before her death, was seeing another man during their 65-year marriage. This revelation rattles Max, along with his son (Kevin Pollak) and granddaughter (Kerry Bishé).
Ahead of a release in September, the first trailer and poster have now arrived. The film looks to be a somber and potentially uplifting meditation on loss and lies, life and death as the journey may be an excuse for the now-mourning and confused Max to connect with his children and experience life one final time.

It’s been 21 years since Jerry Lewis last starred in a film, 1995’s British stage show dramedy Funny Bones. Earlier this year, it was announced that he’d be briefly coming back to acting, appearing in an upcoming Nicolas Cage movie as Cage’s father, presumably to provide the secret origin of the Face/Off star’s tendency for the manic mug. But before that, we’ve got a trailer for another starring role from the 90-year-old comedy legend and would-be Holocaust clown, with Lightstream Entertainment releasing a promo today for Lewis’ melodramatic Max Rose.
Centering on Lewis as the titular blues-playing widower, who discovers that his wife of 65 years might have been unfaithful, the film was actually finished three years ago, and played at Cannes. This long of a pause between completion and release isn’t usually a good sign for a film’s success. (That ...

There is not a cynical or mean-spirited moment in Peter Chelsom's new film "Hector and the Search For Happiness," and the film's observations about life are in some ways so direct, so fundamental, that it would be easy to shrug it off and laugh at its sincerity. Happiness is a subject I've been thinking about quite a bit this year. At 44, I find it elusive, temporary. I've upended my life this year, moving out of my house, negotiating a divorce, building a new life to share with my kids, and even exploring the notion of new love, and all of it has been life-altering and shattering and scary and exhilarating, and above all else, necessary. Completely and totally necessary. When I was a young man, I saw happiness as something that landed on you, something that was simply a by-product of living life. I took happiness for granted, and...

Let's start at the beginning! I’m a great fan of your first film, Hear My Song, which was always a bit of a tricky one to track down.
Thank you! There was a DVD re-release, that was really did well. They did a great job on it.
Well, let’s start there. How much control do you have over your films once they’ve left a cinema, and headed to home formats?
It varies.

Anglophile alert! One of my favorite unsung movies is Peter Chelsom's "Funny Bones," a portrait of comic performers at the British seaside resort Blackpool. It's a very specific, happy/sad movie with terrific performances from Oliver Platt, Jerry Lewis and especially Lee Evans, who channels Buster Keaton. It didn't make much of a splash back in 1995, but it's one of Chelsom's own favorites, and he makes a welcome return to that kind of witty British moviemaking with "Hector and the Search for Happiness," starring two of my other faves, Simon Pegg and Rosamund Pike. Based on a bestselling memoir by a real-life French psychiatrist, the anglicized movie follows stick-in-the-mud shrink Hector (Pegg) on a quest around the world for happiness. He leaves behind his fiance (Pike) to connect with strangers, from a wealthy businessman (Stellan Skarsgard) who shows him around Shanghai and a monk in Tibet to a dangerous...

Simon Pegg tries to find the secret to happiness in his latest film. He chats to us about its making, British cinema and more...
Simon Pegg is back in cinemas this week, in Peter Chelsom's Hector And The Search For Happiness. Ahead of that, the man himself sat down with us for a chat, that led to us - genuinely - being locked in a hotel room together for a minute or two.
It was not helped by us holding a packet of Love Hearts at the time. It's probably best you don't ask.
Anyway, we kept our professional composure, and this is what happened...
Given what a globetrotting movie this one is, how are your passport stamps looking?
It's ridiculously stamped now!
Did you film any of it in Liam Neeson's fake plane from Non-Stop? That would have made it easier.
We were working out how long...

Watch the trailer for Relativity Media’s Hector And The Search For Happiness, starring Simon Pegg, Rosamund Pike, Toni Collette, Stellan Skarsgård, Jean Reno and Christopher Plummer.
Directed by Peter Chelsom (Funny Bones, Shall We Dance, Serendipity), the film opens in UK cinemas August 15 from Koch Media Films; on September 19 in New York and La by Relativity.
This spirited and life-affirming movie is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by François Lelord, the script is written by Maria von Heland, Chelsom and Tinker Lindsay.
Pegg plays Hector, an eccentric yet irresistible London psychiatrist in crisis: his patients are just not getting any happier! He’s going nowhere. Then one day, armed with buckets of courage and an almost child-like curiosity, Hector breaks out of his sheltered life into a global quest to find out if happiness exists. More importantly, if it exists for Hector. And so begins a colorful,...

The year 1991 is the focus for our latest underappreciated films list, which includes dramas, thrillers, and a smattering of horror...
Ah, 1991. The year Robert Patrick ran after cars in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and Kevin Costner grew a spectacular mullet for Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves. But outside the top ten blockbuster list, there lies an entire world of other, less celebrated films to discover.
Some of the movies on this list have been included because they were overlooked in theatres, while others have been added because they were unfairly dismissed by critics. One or two others were modest successes, but (whisper it) we decided to include them anyway because we really, really like them.
So here, for your delectation, is our pick of 25 underappreciated films from 1991.
25. Deceived
You think Goldie Hawn, you tend to think comedy, or her Oscar-nominated turn in Private Benjamin.

They don't make funny movies any more, right? Wrong. If you're looking for a laugh, then here are some you may have missed...
For this list, blame The Hangover Part III. It was whilst walking out of that film that I got into a chat with someone, who was bemoaning the lack of genuinely funny movie comedies. Certainly, big budget Hollywood comedies have no end of problems right now - with the occasional exception - but I couldn't help thinking of the many neglected gems that had gone through my DVD player over the past decade or so.
As such, I started to put this list together. It's inevitably subjective, as one person's comedy is another person's snore fest. But I've tried to dig out a mix of comedies from the past three decades that have either flown under the radar completely, or...

Cannes, France — Jerry Lewis, so beloved in France, isn't quite overcome with emotion now that he's back at the Cannes Film Festival.
The festival, he says, is "for snobs," and when he meets a reporter from his native land, he exhales, "It's so nice to hear an American." To him, Cannes isn't an epicenter of rabid Lewis fandom, it's simply "business," he says, chomping on gum.
And at 87, Lewis is back in business. Nearly two decades since his last film, he's at Cannes with "Max Rose," a modest independent film in which he stars as an elderly man reconciling himself to life without his late wife.
"I'm very happy to relax and stay home with my family, and if something comes up, I'll consider it," Lewis, in an interview, said of his return to movies. "That's the nice part about 87. You just tell people: Oh, you're very tired."

Jerry Lewis Max Rose panned: Cannes Film Festival 2013 Jerry Lewis and Charles Chaplin both made comedies. What else do they have in common? One possible answer: Claire Bloom, Chaplin’s Limelight "discovery" (Bloom had already been featured in the 1948 British drama The Blind Goddess) and Lewis’ leading lady in Max Rose. (Photo: Jerry Lewis in Max Rose.) Jerry Lewis’ first movie since Funny Bones (1995), Max Rose was screened yesterday at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Written and directed by Daniel Noah, whose previous directorial effort was the little-seen 2001 thriller Twelve, Max Rose stars the 87-year-old Lewis in the title role: a former jazz pianist who, following the death of his wife (Claire Bloom), discovers that his marriage may have been less than ideally monogamous. Max Rose: Jerry Lewis’ ‘best script in 40 years’ — critics, however, considerably less impressed At the 2013 Cannes press conference, Jerry Lewis called Max Rose the “best script I read in 40 years,...

The Hollywood Reporter provides an exclusive first look at Daniel Noah's new drama Max Rose, which will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday evening. There is considerable excitement about that event along the Croisette, not only because it will showcase the first leading role of legendary funnyman Jerry Lewis in 23 years and only his second in the last 30 years -- he last headlined Funny Bones (1995), and before that Martin Scorsese's The King of Comedy (1981) -- but also because Lewis himself, a cult figure here in France, will be making the trip to the

Though Jerry Lewis has not acted on the big screen since 1995’s Funny Bones—content to let occasional cartoon voiceovers, his (formerly) annual telethon, and predicting humanity’s encroaching dark night of the soul be the sum total of his public appearances—the 86-year-old comedian finally believes its time for another Jerry Lewis movie, and not just in the sense of handing all of them over to another actor to remake for a cut of the royalties. Deadline reports that Lewis will star in the indie feature Max Rose, playing a recently widowed jazz pianist who discovers that his ...

What is Casting Couch? It’s the column that’s rounding up all the casting announcements the studios have released now that the buzz surrounding the Golden Globes has died down. They’ve been hoarding. Before his show on FX became such a well-respected thing, people thought of Louis Ck mostly as being a stand-up comedian and not really as an actor, despite the fact that he’s shown up in a few small roles here and there. That might be about to change though, because not only does Ck star in Woody Allen’s upcoming movie, Blue Jasmine, but THR is reporting that he’s also in talks to join David O. Russell’s next project: that con-man movie starring Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, and Amy Adams that used to be called American Bullshit. If Ck’s involvement becomes official, it will see him rubbing onscreen elbows with some of the biggest names in...

Jerry Lewis made his first film appearance back in 1949, and 46 years later it seemed that he’d graced the big screen for the final time alongside Oliver Platt in “Funny Bones.” But after 18 years away, and around 30 years since his last leading role, it appears that Lewis is to return in a film called “Max Rose.” This one has been kicking around forever, with Las Vegas Weekly reporting on it back in 2010, and quoting Lewis as saying it would be about “an old man who is driven by love and optimism and by his love for his young daughter.” The film apparently was shopped at Cannes a few years ago, and has been languishing ever since, but it now appears that some funding must have been secured because the indie is in fact going ahead and is being shot in Los Angeles. Deadline is reporting that the film, written and directed by Daniel Noah,...

It's a strange week to talk to "Scream" veteran David Arquette. Even with the fourth installment of his hugely successful horror franchise landing in theaters tonight, the big news seems to be Arquette's likely divorce with wife and "Scream" co-star Courteney Cox -- or, more specifically, their startling joint appearance on The Howard Stern Show.
But call us movie nerds -- we're not immune to celeb gossip, but when we had a few minutes alone with Arquette, all we wanted to talk about was... well, his movie.
So leave the drama for your mama and check out Arquette's dream to one day don the Ghostface mask, his love for flying monkeys and -- obviously -- his favorite scary movie.
The core cast remains the same in "Scream 4" -- that's you, Courteney and Neve Campbell -- but there's a whole stable of young, pretty people in this installment. Was that...

The Disappearance of Alice Creed; Skeletons; 4.3.2.1.; Greenberg; The Human Centipede; Letters to Juliet
With movie-makers still coming to terms with the loss of the UK Film Council (which backed both gems and clunkers in its time), two low-budget home-grown releases remind us just how inventive and exciting our indigenous film industry can be. The Disappearance of Alice Creed (2009, Icon, 18) is a stripped-down, three-handed thriller shot almost entirely on a single-location set; a fortified room in which the eponymous heroine is held. The opening scene, in which Alice is bound and gagged, is horrible (Eddie Marsan, who stars, describes the filming as "really uncomfortable") and seems to suggest some leering torture-porn endurance test ahead. Yet a smart script soon confounds expectations, as Gemma Arterton's resourceful "victim" and Martin Compston's duplicitous kidnapper reveal unexpected sides to their respective situations and the tension increases as the twists continue.

Peter Chelsom, 1995
Funny Bones – it's a film about being funny and about being yourself, about being funny as an expression, a definition of self. I think it's a vastly under-appreciated piece that actually manages to apologise (fully and in advance) for its co-writer and director, Peter Chelsom, having gone on to direct the otherwise inexcusable Hannah Montana: The Movie.
The general scarcity of appreciation is, of course, no surprise – Funny Bones fits into no known genre and makes no compromises about its many, many peculiarities. It nods fondly in the direction of vaudeville pieces such as Duck Soup and has the humanity, imagination and emotional range of a good screwball comedy. The plot is a law unto itself. We begin all at sea and stay there – encountering violent death, magical powder, corrupt policemen, adultery, flashbacks, theft, comedy turns, despair, classic patter and commedia dell'arte. Tommy Fawkes, the son of famous comic George Fawkes,...
