Have you ever wondered about the intricate behind-the-scenes dynamics that can influence the trajectory of a TV show and the careers of those involved? Such is the tale of how Marisa Tomei—known to many as the heartwarming Aunt May in the MCU—faced a fork in her path to stardom after a brief but impactful stint on NBC’s A Different World.
As a vibrant Hillman College student, Maggie Lauton, Tomei made a brief appearance in the debut season before a provocative storyline led to her unceremonious exit. Debbie Allen, who assumed the producer’s mantle from season two onward, had ambitious plans for exploring Tomei’s character.

One of the downsides of streaming’s cord-cutting era has been how hard it is to stumble on a great movie midway through. You know the joy of which we speak. After a long day at work or school, a moment to unwind turns into discovering one of your favorite flicks, that one you’ve probably seen a hundred times, is playing right now on cable. And wouldn’t you know it, you’ve come across it right at your favorite bit.
Before you know it, you spend the next 90 minutes catching up on a film you already have half committed to memory. It’s a perhaps uniquely dated phenomenon, but a great one for those of us who have entire personal libraries of movies that we may never have seen from beginning to end. I spent years, for example, convinced Con Air started with Nic Cage enunciating, “I said...

Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” The 1992 courtroom comedy My Cousin Vinny is a classic, beloved for its humor and quotable lines. But it also had a surprising level of authenticity – much of the film was shot on location, including scenes at a real Georgia prison. At the time of the film’s release, we spoke with Joe Pesci about his experience filming at Lee Arrendale State Prison, where some of the extras were actual inmates. Sharing his thoughts, he revealed unexpected conversations with the incarcerated men. This year’s races for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress were over before they started. Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” and Da’Vine Joy Randolph in “The Holdovers” took leads in the Gold Derby odds in their respective categories early in the season. They both went on to pick up Golden Globe, Critics Choice, BAFTA and SAG Awards. By the time the Oscars rolled around, there was a “near zero” chance of either of them losing.
In contrast, the lead acting contests provided considerably more suspense. Bradley Cooper in “Maestro,” Paul Giamatti in “The Holdovers” and Cillian Murphy in “Oppenheimer” were all looking strong at different point in the derby, before Murphy really exploded and ultimately won the Best Actor Oscar. And Lily Gladstone in “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Emma Stone in “Poor Things” kept trading the top spot in the Best Actress odds. Gladstone finally reclaimed...

Sony‘s untitled Karate Kid film is ready to make Ben Wang‘s heart go pitter-pat after adding Cruel Summer actress Sadie Stanley to the cast. Stanley plays the romantic lead opposite Ben Wang (American Born Chinese) in the forthcoming marital arts drama, which also stars Joshua Jackson, Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio.
Plot specifics remain a mystery, though we hear Sony will move the story to the East Coast and focus on a teen from China who finds identity and strength in martial arts. During his journey of self-discovery, Wang’s character meets a disciplined martial arts master. With Chan and Macchio both appearing in the film, there’s a chance Wang’s character could train under two teachers. Jonathan Entwistle

When it was released in 1992, My Cousin Vinny was both a critical and commercial hit. And in the over three decades since it hit theaters, it has only grown in stature, becoming one of the most significant films of the decade. Part of the reason for that was the incredible chemistry shared by co-stars Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei, who earned an Academy Award for her performance in the movie. When the film was released, Pesci talked about some of the things he liked most about making the movie, including his favorite scene and that chemistry with Tomei. "Raging Bull" knocked audiences flat on their backs when it premiered over four decades ago. The boxing biography, which is still considered among director Martin Scorsese's best films, unfolds as a rags-to-riches-to-rags story about a brutal middleweight fighter whose personal life never quite matches up to his success in the ring. Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Cathy Moriarty headlined the film's wildly talented ensemble, while late "Cheers" star Tommy Como played a local mobster and actress Theresa Saldana, who passed away in 2016, played protagonist Jake's second wife Lenora.
While time has taken some of these talented actors away from us, and the real Jake Lamotta died in 2017, each member of the "Raging Bull" core trio is still acting today. To present a "where are they now" about an actor as famous and prolific as De Niro would be silly, but if you're looking for another great De Niro...

In 2020 – for the first time in seven years – the Best Supporting Actress Oscar category saw a lone nomination, meaning that a film was recognized there and nowhere else. This achievement is attributed to Kathy Bates (“Richard Jewell”), who competed for no major precursors except the Golden Globe but still managed to bump Critics Choice, SAG, and Globe nominee Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”). Perhaps unsurprisingly given the length of the streak she broke, there has yet to be a lone contender in any of her category’s subsequent lineups.
Since the introduction of the two gendered supporting Oscars in 1937, there have been 57 female lone nominees and 54 male ones, with over half of the entrants on the former roster having been added before 1977. The one who directly preceded Bates was Helen Hunt, whose inclusion in her lineup was much more heavily predicted. Coincidentally, both women had the perceived advantage of being former Best Actress champions,...

Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas" turns 34 this year. The movie itself spans more than three decades, chronicling Henry Hill's (Ray Liotta) life as an associate in the New York mob — Hill's life story was first told to the public by the nonfiction book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the "Goodfellas" script with Scorsese.
"Goodfellas" is a cinematic shot of adrenaline, cut with vivacious energy by Thelma Schoonmaker and scored with classic rock to reflect the anti-authority glamour of mid-20th century gangsters. No matter if you watch it in all its sprawling glory or just sample clips, it's enjoyable — nay, irresistible.
Since "Goodfellas" packs so many years into two-and-a-half hours, it has a huge cast. So much time has passed since "Goodfellas" premiered in theaters and left its mark on crime cinema that not all of these actors are still with us. Miraculously, though, quite a few of them...

The two actors will each reprise their original characters but are joining together in the same movie for the first time. Call it the Karate Kid Cinematic Universe.
Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, both of whom starred in Karate Kid movies decades apart, are set to reprise their popular characters in Sony Pictures’ latest installment of the iconic coming-of-age martial arts franchise.
Jonathan Entwistle, best known for his well-regarded and award-winning teen television dramas I’m Not Okay with This and The End of the F***ing World, is directing the untitled feature that the studio is positioning as the fusing and continuing the mythology of the original franchise.
A global search for a Chinese actor to play the erstwhile title character launched today, with the Chan and Macchio kicking things off with an introductory video, seen below.
Rob Lieber, whose credits include Sony’s Peter Rabbit and Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, wrote the script. The plot line is hiding in the back of the dojo.

Over the course of its 50-year existence, Troma has helped launch the careers of filmmakers like Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Eli Roth (Hostel), along with countless actors who went on to long careers, but their biggest export by any internal metric — financial success, brand recognition, franchisability, fan base — is 1984’s The Toxic Avenger.
The film is preceded by an “extreme violence” warning. The gore is indeed graphic — the first kill features a kid’s head being run over by a car, firmly establishing that no one is safe and nothing is off limits — but it could use about a dozen more trigger warnings by today’s standards. If you can be offended, you will be offended by the boundary-pushing content that includes (but is certainly not limited to) racism, homophobia, ableism, and sexual misconduct — yet there is substance behind the sleaze.

Marisa Tomei was more than reluctant to shed her locks for 1994 film “Only You.”
Tomei, who plays a hopeless romantic determined to find her soulmate, a man identified by her Ouija board when she was a teen, had a major fashion moment onscreen with a stylish bob haircut, starting a trend upon the film’s release in 1994. Robert Downey Jr., Bonnie Hunt, and Billy Zane co-star in the beloved rom-com.
Emmy-winning costume designer Nicoletta Ercole, who also worked on fellow Italy-set productions like “Letters to Juliet,” “Under the Tuscan Sun,” and “My House in Umbria,” recently told IndieWire that Tomei had to be convinced to change up her style.
“Marisa, at the beginning, she arrived right after she won [the Oscar] for ‘My Cousin Vinny.’ She had very long hair,” Ercole explained. “I said, ‘Why can’t you cut it? Like this, it’s normal. It’s nothing special.'”

Production designer Victoria Paul knows how much people love Penny Marshall’s “A League of Their Own”—a film that 31 years later, fans still relish quoting: “There’s no crying in baseball!” and “And how about Marla Hooch…what a hitter!” So when the production designer (who has worked on everything from “My Cousin Vinny” to “Breakdown” to “Bones”) was hired for Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of the 1992 movie, she realized the best way forward was to take her cues from Marshall’s film. “We were all in awe of the movie,” Paul said. “It’s a classic, and we didn’t shy away from looking at how they did (their sets). We weren’t trying to disassociate ourselves from the movie at all.”

Courtroom movies tend to have a winning formula that appeals to our sense of justice. We never want to see innocent people sent down for crimes they didn’t commit, so a reliable story can usually be built around the process of defending unlucky characters in a court of law. But because so much of that drama transpires on a single set, making a really good courtroom movie requires certain elements to work spectacularly.
You’ll need a great, charismatic lawyer whose life, career, or reputation depends on winning the case. Then there are your defendants, who must be at least a little relatable. After all, any one of us can get mixed up in some unfortunate circumstances given the right series of events! Then there are the witnesses, who must be cajoled into telling the truth, and the opposing counsel, who is often as antagonistic as the injustice itself.

Two of the hottest tickets in Hollywood, Jennifer Coolidge and Brian Cox (Succession), are about to be joined by Dustin Hoffman and Gabrielle Union for the crime comedy Riff Raff. Dito Montiel directs from a script by John Pollono (Stronger).
The star-studded project revolves around the ordinary life of a former criminal whose world turns upside down when his old family shows up for a long-awaited reckoning. With cameras ready to roll in September, Riff Raff heads to the Cannes market this week for international sales, with Capstone organizing domestic rights with CAA Media Finance and WME Independent. Noah Rothman produces through Canopy Partners, with Marc Goldberg and Sarah Gabriel producing via Signature Films.
“We are thrilled to partner with the producers and Dito on this project; we’ve loved it ever since we’ve read it. It embodies the type of crime comedies we grew up with – witty and entertaining.

Bella Ramsey leads our MTV Movie and TV Awards predictions for Best Breakthrough Performance for her role as Ellie in “The Last of Us,” the HBO series based on the much-loved video game about a zombie apocalypse. If she wins, she would join an impressive list of stars who leveled up in their careers and continued to after winning.
The 19-year-old actress could have won this award at least once before this. She first rose to prominence as young noblewoman Lyanna Mormont, who had grit beyond her years on “Game of Thrones.” But she leveled up with her leading role as Ellie, and perhaps both powerful fandoms will join forces to get her the Golden Popcorn. As of this writing she gets leading odds of 16/5 with 18 of our Top 24 Users and an overwhelming 21 of our All-Star Top 24 betting on her to prevail.

Every good lawyer understands that the job requires a certain amount of showmanship, especially when they’re presenting cases before juries. Perhaps that’s why so many actors relish the opportunity to play lawyers on the stage and screen. Joe Pesci got rave reviews for his role as an underdog lawyer in 1992’s My Cousin Vinny. But, while he certainly had a great time playing the character in the film, he told us he didn’t think his acting skills would have made him a very good attorney. (Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we take a look at an Oscars category from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winner stands the test of time.)
In any given year, you're lucky to have even one performance by an actor that is genuinely considered to be iconic. I know that is a word that gets thrown around enough nowadays that it means almost nothing, but every so often, that is really the only word you can use. These are the performances that you would show to an alien as the benchmarks of cinema. I'm talking about Marlon Brando in "The Godfather" or Judy Garland in "The Wizard of Oz"-level stuff. Well, 1950 produced three. All of them are women, all three played actors, and they all competed against each other in the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards. As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Prime Video is hoping to launch its own extended franchise universe in April with the premiere of international spy series “Citadel” from the minds of the Russo Brothers. The show stars Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, and Stanley Tucci, and is intended to be the first block of an interconnected story with different spinoffs in countries and regions around the world. Following her surprising (some thought shocking) Best Supporting Actress triumph at the Academy Awards in 1993 for her role in “My Cousin Vinny,” poor Marisa Tomei has been forced to endure a Mount Everest of disrespect. Her name has become literally Exhibit A for what’s wrong with he voting process, a punchline of outrage – the poster child of head-scratching awards season jokes. For years, she topped the list of “How the hell did this happen?” Oscar moments.
Forget the fact that in the years that followed her win, Tomei has generated another pair of supporting nominations – for “In the Bedroom” in 2002 (a Todd Field movie – hello) and “The Wrestler” in 2009. The presumption was that Tomei wasn’t nearly a talented enough actress to win, though they usually don’t find a whole lot of lousy performers generating three Oscar nominations. No matter. One decade after injecting their relentless and bold style into the Evil Dead franchise (I'm still in awe of the Abomination's blood rainstorm), director/co-writer Fede Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues are bringing their talents to the Alien franchise in 20th Century Studios' new film that begins production in Budapest on March 9th, and we have a look at the cast list and brief synopsis:

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

(Welcome to Best Actor Ever, an ongoing series where we explore the careers and performances of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen.)
We're only six articles into this series, and I've already violated my critic's creed by furthering one of the most egregious filmmaking fallacies in existence. While I stand wholeheartedly behind my selections of Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, Robert De Niro, and Viola Davis, these artists are venerated for capital-a acting. They play serious, complicated people beset by demons both personal and societal. Critics expect them to dazzle us, to shed inspiring or unsettling light on the human condition. For too many years, they did not expect them to make us laugh.
When Streep, after a decade-plus of electrifying dramatic performances, appeared in the 1989 dark comedy "She-Devil" opposite TV superstar Roseanne Barr, many critics felt she was slumming. Ditto De Niro in Martin Brest's 1988 buddy-comedy "Midnight Run.

As we approach O-Day and the 95th Academy Awards on March 12, it’s always fun to go back and look at the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories and revel in some of the trivia and shockers that have gone down on the awards season’s biggest stage. This is the rare year when Meryl Streep isn’t in the running, as her 21 overall nominations in the acting categories are nearly double the number of her closest female pursuer, Katherine Hepburn, who has 12. However, Hepburn still holds the all-time Oscar record with four acting wins. Streep has a mere three.
Here are some other actress category factoids to chew on:
Should Cate Blanchett win Best Actress this year for her role in “Tar,” she would tie Streep, Ingrid Bergman and Frances McDormand for second place behind Hepburn among actresses with three triumphs apiece. All four of Hepburn’s wins...

Joe Pesci has been enjoying semi-retirement for most of this century, but he triumphantly reunited with Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro for “The Irishman,” which brought him an Oscar bid as Best Supporting Actor.
Pesci started his career at a very young age, appearing on the New York Stage before he even turned five. By the time he was ten years old, he was a regular on a television show called “Startime Kids.” In his teen years he lost interest in acting and instead started trying to launch a career as a musician. Despite releasing a record of his own his musical career didn’t really take off but he did play an instrumental part in the creation of the highly successful musical act Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. Pesci was friends with Valli and other members of the group and he introduced them to the person that would launch their success.

Instead of letting old film reels languish and gather dust in warehouses, Jesse Brunt and his wife Michelle Sloey decided to give new life to these films and make art out of them, which in turn gets the film displayed again for the world to see.
The duo, who collaborate under the company name Jm Film Resins, have found film from movies like The Wizard of Oz (in technicolor), Pulp Fiction, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, My Cousin Vinny, The Devil Wears Prada, Gladiator, The Graduate … basically any film you love, they’ll have made a film resin art piece out of it.
“Every single film we find is a true treasure,” Brunt tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Every time, it’s like a mini miracle.”
