Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1993...
What a year 1993 was. It saw the release of Star Fox on the Super Nintendo. Bill Clinton became president. Season three of Deep Space Nine premiered on Us television. UK politician Douglas Hurd visited Argentina. Cyndi Lauper released her album Hat Full Of Stars.
Aside from those earth shattering events, we'll probably remember 1993, in cinema terms, as the year Jurassic Park dominated the box office like an angry Tyrannosaurus. A true phenomenon, its profits doubled those of the second most watched film in 1993 cinemas, Mrs Doubtfire, and almost three times as much as the movie below that - the Harrison Ford thriller, The Fugitive.
But as ever, there was so much more to the 1993 movie landscape than dinosaurs and Robin Williams dressed as an old woman.

As Lionsgate UK releases Sofia onto DVD and Blu-ray on 10th September, we thought we would have a look at leading-man Christian Slater’s Top 10 starring roles.
1) True Romance
Written by King of Cool, Quentin Tarentino, and directed by legendary film-maker Tony Scott, True Romance tells the tale of loveable rogue Clarence Worley (Slater) as he attempts to out-run cops and crooks alike with his hooker-bride (Patricia Arquette) and a ‘suitcase full of trouble’. Featuring appearances from an endless list of A-list talent including Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken and Samuel L Jackson, this cult classic is not to be missed.
2) Pump Up The Volume
Mark (Slater) is an intelligent but shy teenager who has just moved to Arizona from the East Coast. His parents give him a short-wave radio so he can talk to his pals, but instead he sets up shop as pirate deejay Hard Harry, who becomes a...

Before we get down to the business of mocking teenagers for their teenager ways, I thought I'd first try and offer some perspective. First: Some of the winners in this year's Teen Choice Awards aren't bad. Where Harry Potter is concerned, I'd expect most teenagers today choose it as the best movie. At that age, I probably would have, as well. Also, Easy A wins a few categories here (as does Emma Stone) and, at 17, that movie would've been rocked my Jordan Knight pompadour, too. They also choose Black Swan and Natalie Portman in a couple of categories, which are fine choices. More inexplicable are the wins for the likes of Just Go With It, Brooklyn Decker, and Bad Teacher (as well as Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake). Not only is Bad Teacher a terrible movie, but the target audience aren't even teenagers (it was R-rated, as was Black Swan,...

1. It's a novel premise: It's an office comedy, set in a sketchy security company, where the goal is to breach a company's security in order to expose its flaws. This allows for a mini-heist or two in each episode. Office comedy + heists = Amusing possibilities.
2. Christian Slater: He's had some serious bad luck with television shows, but this one is a comedy, which allows Slater to flash some of that wiseacre smarm that reminds us why we liked him so much in Heathers and Kuffs. Plus, now that Jack Nicholson is an infrequent presence in movies and television, someone's got to carry the Nicholson voice until Jay Baruchel lands another television gig.
3. The Black Guy: He's like the sassy black woman stereotype trapped in the body of a Dungeons and Dragons' geek. His Iq is 161, he does a mean Chewbacca impression, and his office pranks include turning a co-worker's car...

Wednesday night's "American Idol" was supposed to be all about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But leave it to Jimmy Iovine's sleepwalking producers and Nigel Lythgoe's showbiz pizzazz to make it rock softer than an Air Supply acoustic album.
That's not to say the top nine of "American Idol X: Pay No Attention to the Man Behind the Curtain" didn't give it their all and then some. This may go down as the sweatiest "Idol" episode ever. Did Idolland's air conditioning break, or is there a fire within these contestants causing them to look like James Brown on Pcp?
As an added challenge this week, producers handicapped the girls by forcing them to wear Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B. collection of leopard-print diapers and silk tube-top jumpsuits. I guess they really don't want the Season 10 "Idol" to have a vagina. Paging Gloria Steinem!

We brought you the trailer for Conviction a while ago, along with confirmation that Hilary Swank would play a mother who puts herself through law school in order to defend her brother, who she believes to have been wrongly accused. Coming Soon flesh out the synopsis as follows:-
The film is the inspirational true story of a sister’s unwavering devotion to her brother. When Betty Anne Waters’ (Swank) older brother Kenny (Sam Rockwell) is arrested for murder and sentenced to life in 1983, Betty Anne, a Massachusetts wife and mother of two, dedicates her life to overturning the murder conviction. Convinced that her brother is innocent, Betty Anne puts herself through high school, college and, finally, law school in an 18 year quest to free Kenny. With the help of best friend Abra Rice (Minnie Driver), Betty Anne pours through suspicious evidence mounted by small town cop Nancy Taylor (Melissa Leo...

Sam Rockwell calls his "Conviction" director, Tony Goldwyn, one of the best artists he's ever worked with—and "the hunkiest." Says Rockwell, only half-joking, "Have you seen him? He's too good-looking to be a director!" Indeed, Goldwyn began his show business career as an actor; most people remember him for his breakthrough role as Patrick Swayze's villainous best friend in "Ghost." And he can currently be seen singing and dancing as the smarmy boss of Sean Hayes' character in the Broadway revival of "Promises, Promises." But Goldwyn has racked up impressive credits behind the camera as well, from the lyrical romance "A Walk on the Moon" to episodes of acclaimed shows such as "Dexter" and "Damages." But "Conviction" might be his greatest achievement yet. The true story of Betty Anne Waters, who put herself through law school to prove her brother Kenny's innocence on a murder charge, "Conviction...

A couple of months ago, it was announced that supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley would be replacing Megan Fox in Transformers 3. Far be it for me to judge what comes between Michael Bay and his casting couch -- maybe Huntington-Whiteley is a talented actress (fat chance) -- but the history has not been favorable to supermodels in film. And yet, just this week, Peter Berg -- who I used to have considerable respect for -- decided to cast another model in his latest, Battleship. Her name is Brooklyn Decker. I'm sure she's a brilliant actress. Here's a sampling of her "acting" talents.
Indeed, if the past is any indication, there's next to no reason to believe that supermodels can become serious actors. Or even credible. Or even not completely embarrassing. What the hell is Peter Berg thinking? Maybe the next time a dumbass director decides it's a good idea to hire...

Kuffs isn't the greatest movie out there. It's one of those eh, 50-50 type flicks that has been forgotten by anyone who wasn't a rabid Christian Slater fan in the early '90s. (Yes, I was.) But even after I wipe away the sheen of nostalgia and admit that as much as I loved the film as a teen, it's not all that great, it still holds one of my favorite cinematic rants.
Tony Goldwyn, hot off his creepy turn in Ghost, plays Ted Bukovsky, a poor sap partnered with Slater's George Kuffs. The latter is obsessed with catching his brother's killer, and when he sees the creep drive by, George whips the car around, narrowly avoiding a bus. This sends Ted into an f-bomb raving ball of fury. The first time I saw it, in my friend's dark bedroom one night, we woke her mother up with our shrieking laughter.

Get ready Milla Jovovich fans -- on top of her zombie butt-kicking ways, and thrillers in paradise, Variety reports that the actress is entering the already-packed halls of stripperdom by signing on for a new comedy called Keep Coming Back. The film focuses on a young, sheltered (and, well, stupid) guy who joins Alcoholics Anonymous just so he can seduce an alcoholic former stripper (Jovovich).
While the neverending hordes of new stripper films never fails to irk me, there's a silver lining to the story. The film will be the directorial debut of William H. Macy, who will also co-star alongside Jovovich and Steve Buscemi. I imagine neither of these men are the young guy, so we still get to wait and see who gets the honor of breaking into AA for lust.
Man, time flies. I remember the days when Milla's sexy roles were dancing around for George...
