Writer-director Lawrence Kasdan, a four-time Oscar nominee, worked with Oscar winner William Hurt, who died March 13 at age 71, on “Body Heat” (1981), “The Big Chill” (1983), “The Accidental Tourist” (1988) and “I Love You to Death” (1990).
William Hurt and I came into the movies together, and Bill had a huge impact on the way I thought about the process.
We met when I was casting “Body Heat,” the first movie I directed. On our initial meeting, we talked for hours about movies and life. We were trying to guess what it would be like to take that journey together.
I was still looking for my cast and eventually tested four couples for the two leads, but that first conversation with Bill stayed with me. Bill immediately brought a seriousness to the whole process that I carried forward from that night. We did everything with the knowledge that what we were doing commanded our greatest effort.

William Hurt was tall, blond, and attractive, and the product of a prep-school education and training at Julliard. For someone whose first movie came out in 1980 — the year Ronald Reagan was elected and “The Official Preppy Handbook” was published — he could have had a much different career as an actor, one that was blander, less eccentric, and less daring.
But the approachable exterior camouflaged a complicated, difficult artist, one who constantly challenged himself, even when dealing with his own inner demons. As Mark Harris noted on Twitter upon hearing of Hurt’s death at the age of 71, “Hurt always seemed profoundly uncomfortable being a good-looking leading man, which may be one reason that his performance in ‘Broadcast News’ is absolutely perfect — he understood that he was playing someone who was miscast.”
Before making his way to the screen, Hurt had already established his bona fides on the New York stage,...

Nearly 20 years after starring in “The Matrix,” Keanu Reeves has suffered the worst wide-release box office opening of his career with “Replicas,” a sci-fi film shunned by audiences and critics alike.
The sci-fi movie grossed a mere $2.5 million from 2,329 screens, falling below tracker projections for a $4-7 million launch and earning a per screen average of just $1,073.
It is the lowest opening for a film starring Reeves that opened on more than 1,000 screens. The last time he had a launch this low was all the way back in 1990 with the TriStar crime comedy “I Love You to Death,” which opened to $4 million.

glitter attack!True story. In the late 1990s after graduating college, before New York City and The Film Experience years, I was working as an artist at a company that specialized in parties and events. Every day in a big warehouse I was a hot mess of glue guns, paint rollers, foam shavings, and glitter. Glitter above all else. Three years later in New York City I was still finding glitter in the weirdest of places; that shit lasts forever.
I thought about this as soon as the opening credits of Allan Carr and Nancy Walker's Village People origin comedy, Can't Stop the Music (1980), our "Hmwybs" April Fools Selection. It was like the movie was blowing its glitter load in the first frame. Turns out there was no refractory period. The glitter just keeps on coming and not just over animated fonts. In this weekend's ridiculously entertaining "Last Vegas," a group of elder statesmen take a trip to Las Vegas after one of them proposes to a young honey. The four old coots at the center of "Last Vegas" also happen to be classy, Oscar-winning actors (Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline), and it's wonderful to watch them bumble around the neon-drenched, scantily clad Las Vegas of today.
And while everyone (including the female lead, played by Mary Steenburgen) is an absolute hoot, if there had to be an Mvp designated (for the sheer amount of giggles provided), it would probably be Kline. As a man who is living in the retirement hell of Florida and stuck in a marriage that has lost the physical spark, he goes to Vegas looking for a fresh start (and a good lay -- his girlfriend gives him a "free pass" and...

Recently, the intrepid co-hosts of Sound on Sight radio asked me to help host a podcast devoted to Keanu Reeves. I had been hoping for a long time that they would have just such a podcast, and I wanted to take this opportunity to explain a little bit more about why I find Reeves to be such a fascinating figure, and why I have spent so many hours of my life thinking about him and enjoying his films. It’s already fairly common knowledge that Reeves is a pretty spectacular human being. In terms of recounting his personal awesomeness, this article (http://www.ranker.com/list/the-7-greatest-_true_-keanu-reeves-stories-ever-told/joanne) does a better job than I ever could. Give it a glance. But being an amazing human hasn’t necessarily won Keanu the accolades he deserves in the artistic world. And so, in terms of arguing for his value as a film star,...

Is it time to start talking about Brino on "Bristol Palin: Life's a Tripp" (Tue., 11 p.m. Et on Lifetime). Things are getting more and more serious between Bristol and boyfriend Gino. So much that she simply had to ask him about the big m-word.
Gino played it coy, saying, "It’s in God’s hands." He may or may not have something planned, but he's certainly not ready to say if he is concocting a proposal.
He was willing to tell her that he can't imagine being with anyone else. "I know that I love you to death. And I know that I love Tripp," he told her.
It was a genuine and sweet moment between the couple that had fans of the show "oohing" and "awwing" at home, if their Tweets are any indication. Could this inaugural season be building to a marriage proposal?

Actor Kevin Kline has had a long career in Hollywood, but some of his greatest collaborations have been with director/writer Lawrence Kasdan. Together, the two have worked on six films including "The Big Chill," "Silverado," "I Love You to Death," "Grand Canyon," "French Kiss" and now their latest effort, "Darling Companion." "Darling Companion" marks Kasdan's first independent feature, but the film is just the latest in a line of many charting back to "The Ice Storm" for Kline. The actor sat down with Indiewire to discuss the differences between shooting independent and studio films, why he's worked with Kasdan so many times, the joys of filming in Utah and why he has no plans to do "mumblecore" any time soon. This is your sixth time working with Lawrence Kasdan and your first film together since 1993. So what brought you to this project? 1993 was the last time I...

When we visited the "Secret Circle" set last week, love was in the air -- no, there aren't any on-set romances brewing, but the whole cast was so excited for fans to finally see their Valentine's Day episode, airing tonight on The CW. Of course, if you've been watching this show (and if you've seen this week's chilling preview below) you know it's not exactly a Hallmark occasion.

"I think Faye and Jake written in the stars!" Zylka jokes, laughing. "Honestly, though, I think she's...

The romantic horror film revolves around the maddening psychosis of Clay Foster and his dead wife Lily. Clay keeps his wife's corpse, while investigating the mystery of her murder. "I just have a special place for him. He always makes me feel like it's Ok. You know, just chill, relax, jokes. It's never to the point where I don't want to be there anymore, 'Let's wrap this up.' Having Drake there, it felt like we could have shot a second day for this video, and I could be fine. He's someone I look up to, he got a head start. So he's able to tell me things I don't know and I can confide in him."

Drake might want to rethink this relationship with Nicki Minaj.
The Thank Me Later rapper co-starred as Nicki's love interest in her "Moment 4 Life" video, adding more intrigue to their flirtatious union. But when the Pink Friday star explained how she managed to reel Drizzy in for the clip, she proved to be a pretty demanding lady.
"It wasn't hard to get Drake. Drake does what I tell him to do," Nicki laughed to MTV News' Sway during an exclusive interview after the "Moment 4 Life" premiere. "I'm Nicki Minaj! You know Drake does what I tell him to do."
The two have carried on a playful romance over Twitter, in interviews and in song for some time now.

No matter what they think of his acting, everyone seems to love Keanu Reeves. He tells Ryan Gilbey about Bill & Ted's return, hogging extra takes and becoming an internet meme
Keanu Reeves is not the greatest film actor in the world, nor is he anywhere close to the worst, but he has some claim to be the most enigmatic, as well as the most warmly adored. That much became indisputably clear last May when the "Sad Keanu" phenomenon erupted online. Reeves had long been cherished, and occasionally mocked, for his work in pictures as diverse as the Matrix trilogy and My Own Private Idaho, Speed and the Bill & Ted films. But it took an unexceptional paparazzi snap of the actor sitting on a park bench, staring disconsolately past the half-eaten sandwich in his hand, to ignite widespread concerns for his welfare and to act as the catalyst for the sort...

The Vampire Diaries will never have a slow, boring episode. There. I said it. But a show of hands for those who cringed in pain as Caroline changed into a vampire? It was the most excruciating thing to witness since seeing Vicki get staked or Grams dying in front of Bonnie. It was tragic, poetic, and entertaining all at once. Meanwhile, the Lockwoods get closer to letting their inner beast rage.
Brave New World – Caroline’s Story
After waking up in the hospital after her death, Caroline doesn’t put two and two together yet at first. But after taking her first taste of bagged blood and realizing that she burns in the sunlight, Caroline understands loud and clear that something is up and it has nothing to do with the medication she’s on. After vamping out for the first time and witnessing it in the mirror, Caroline attacks...

We’ve known this episode was coming ever since we found out that Capt. Phil Harris insisted the cameras keep filming after he suffered a stroke because they needed “a great finish to the story,” and it’s made season 6 — the show’s most-watched — exquisitely excruciating. You couldn’t have scripted a more moving start to Phil’s final days if you tried.
We started with a replay of the confrontation Phil and son Jake had in last week’s episode after the skipper caught his deckhand stealing some of his prescription pain medicine. Phil said he never wanted to...

I love a diva. So when I saw that Fuse was doing a special titled Top 20 Divas earlier this evening at 6 p.m., I immediately set my DVR to record. Truly, I had no idea what I was getting into: Would this be a video countdown with commentary? A VH1-style special that features talking heads—and sometimes the divas themselves—discussing what makes these Top 20 divas so damned special? A mix of the two? Well, come to find out, it was just literally 20 videos from divas. But, honestly, it was one of the weirdest countdowns I've ever seen. To start with,...

Streep at 60: We've been looking at each Meryl Streep Oscar nod and its competition. Previously 78, 79, 81, 82 and 83, 85, 87 and 88
I believe that Meryl Streep's film career can be divided into five chapters or acts (thus far).
Act I (Liberated Lady) 1977-1981Act II (Chamaeleonidae Erotica) 1981-1988Act III (Funny Lady) 1989-1992Act IV (???) 1993-2001Act V (The Great Entertainer) 2002-presentAfter the High Drama years it came as a shock to many when Meryl was suddenly making comedies. Some felt it was a career crisis and there was some backlash going on. This is possibly hard to comprehend for her new young fans but great success always leads to it and many people were sick of Streep's total dominance as the Eighties wound down. It was somewhat common wisdom at the time that her run at the top was ending, having turned 40 in 1989. Several younger stars were coming into their own...
