In what is the first official glimpse of the pandemic’s impact on U.K. film and television production, British Film Institute (BFI) data reveals that film and high-end television production spend exceeded £2.84 billion ($3.9 billion) in 2020, only 21% down on 2019 levels.
BFI boss Ben Roberts tells Variety that the speed with which the industry was able to band together and hammer out guidelines for production allowed the sector to weather the toll of the pandemic, particularly as it allowed the buoyant studio sector to quickly rev up operations. Film and television production has continued through the U.K.’s three national lockdowns, working to pan-industry guidelines that were drawn up in late spring. The BFI led the Screen Sector Taskforce, creating the guidance for Covid-safe productions alongside a host of industry players, including the British Film Commission and producers’ trade org Pact.

When Glen Keane first read the script for “Over the Moon,” he didn’t realize that Audrey Wells had written her own terminal illness into the main character’s mother. “I didn’t know when I first met her… that she knew she would not live to see this movie. This was really being written for her daughter, helping her move past the grief that she would experience,” he tells Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch above). Even though she died in the middle of production, Keane always remembered a conversation they had about this film and “The Wizard of Oz” and how Wells was insistent that the events that transpired in both films were real and not some sort of dream. “She had this incredible, fierce look in her eyes and for her there had to be real roots of sincerity, depth and truth to this story.

“In China she’s like more famous than Santa Claus. The film tells the story of Fei Fei (voiced by Cathy Ang), a teenage girl who seeks out Chang’e to stop her father from getting remarried four years after her mother’s death. Academy Award winner Glen Keane is an animation legend behind some of the most memorable characters in film history. In his latest directorial effort, “Over the Moon,” Keane draws on Chinese history and culture to craft the story of Fei Fei, a young girl on a quest to meet a mythical goddess on the moon. The film premiered on Netflix in October and has since become a top Oscar contender for Best Animated Feature. Watch Keane and members of the “Over the Moon” cast and crew detail bringing this vibrant journey to the screen in an exclusive new featurette from Netflix above.
“I love characters that believe the impossible is possible,” remarks Keane in the nearly three-minute reel. “Fei Fei in ‘Over the Moon’ is like that. I had spent nearly 40 years at Disney animating characters like ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘Aladdin,’ ‘Tarzan’ and ‘Pocahontas.’ I was taught that the key to animation is sincerity.

Just over 63 years ago, Theodor Geisel — better known by his pen name, Dr. Seuss — wrote and illustrated a holiday-themed children’s book meant to teach kiddos that Christmas isn’t about spending outrageous sums of money to build a tree-toppling pile of presents; it’s about family, togetherness, and celebrating rebirth at the end of a long year.
So, naturally, “The Grinch” has been adapted a billion times over by every money-hungry corporation out there. It only took nine years for a TV version to hit screens, and that’s before the terrifying Jim Carrey/Ron Howard movie started dominating cable channels every December, or Illumination’s 2018 animated movie sat perched and waiting in Netflix queues for over a year, only to disappear December 4.
But fear not Seuss fans. “The Grinch Musical!” is here to offer two hours of fresh holiday entertainment thanks to NBC’s 2020 adaptation of the 2007 stage production.

Great animators are also actors, comedians, and scientists. They study the way animals move, the flow of long grass, the grace of scudding clouds, the expressions humans make when they are frustrated, hungry, happy, or in love. And Glen Keane is one of its masters.

Like so many beloved children’s classics, the story of “Black Beauty” has always been run through with blunt messaging, tough traumas, and the kind of painful imagery no kid ever really shakes off. Over time, some of those more realistic impulses may be dulled down for wider consumption — the sort of thing Disney has built its animated classics around, woe to the tyke who watches “The Little Mermaid” and then seeks out its source material — but the darker elements that author Anna Sewell oriented her 1877 novel around have mostly endured through countless adaptations. And while the latest, a family-friendly drama from Disney+ and filmmaker Ashley Avis, offers

The “Lilo & Stitch” ohana is expanding, with Jon M. Chu in talks to direct Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation.
Disney has yet to announce if the movie will release in theaters or on Disney Plus, the studio’s subscription streaming service. “Lilo & Stitch” has not set a screenwriter or any cast members.
Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, the company that recently backed Disney’s “Aladdin” remake, are producing the film, with Rideback exec Ryan Halprin serving as an executive producer.
The original movie, written and directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, was released in 2002. The animated family film follows a 6-year-old Hawaiian girl Lilo and her teenage sister Nani, who adopt a blue extraterrestrial creature nicknamed Stitch. The movie popularized the song “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” and familiarized audiences to the concept of ohana, which means family — and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.

The movie popularized the song “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride” and familiarized audiences to the concept of ohana, which means family — and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.

For her first live-action feature, Oscar-winning filmmaker Brenda Chapman was determined to play the hits, but with the kind of personal twist she’s put on animated classics like “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Brave” throughout her career. A fairy tale obsessive from the jump — she literally grew up reading Classics Illustrated Junior comic books featuring stories like “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast” — Chapman’s “Come Away” is a perfect fit for her talents and interests, plotting an inventive mash-up of both “Peter Pan” and “Alice in Wonderland” in a family-centric package.
The film, written by Marissa Kate Goodhill, serves as something of a prequel to the beloved stories involving the boy who wouldn’t grow up and the girl who falls into a wacky world through a rabbit hole. “Come Away” supposes, what if they were siblings? From there, the film weaves a...

Oscar-winning animator and Scad Savannah Film Festival honoree Glen Keane knew he wanted to be an artist from a young age. The evidence is right there in the archives of his father Bil Keane’s daily newspaper comic, “The Family Circus.”
You see, Glen served as an inspiration for 7-year-old Billy, who would, from time to time, step in to scribble a few installments of the beloved single-panel strip. In reality, those crudely drawn “guest” entries were daddy’s invention, although it’s true that Glen displayed an early interest in art, and the encouragement from both parents set him on the course that would make him responsible for some of the best-loved animated characters of the last half-century.
During his run at Disney, Keane served as supervising animator for Ariel in “The Little Mermaid,” the Beast in “Beauty and the Beast” and the title characters in “Aladdin” and “Tarzan.

Photo: 'Peter Pan and Wendy'/Disney A few years ago, Disney began a cycle of turning their beloved animated films into live-action adaptations. So far, Disney has made huge strides with their live-action adaptations of Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon, Beauty and the Beast, Christopher Robin, Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp, and Mulan. Some of these films have done better than others in regard to audience reviews, but they all point toward Disney’s future of transitioning classic animated tales to live-action big-budget films for the whole family. The extensive list of already released live-action Disney remakes does not even include all of the live-actions that are currently in pre-production. These include Cruella, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Lilo & Stitch, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Pinocchio, Bambi, Robin Hood, Hercules, and of course, the topic of this article,...

Animated movies for children walk a tricky tightrope between imparting sobering life lessons about coping with loss and confronting societal evils, without also extinguishing all of the magic that guides a child through the world. It’s rare to find a kids’ movie that doesn’t involve the loss of at least one parent, yet this trope is usually more backstory than anything else—a distant event that establishes the emotional stakes but isn’t actively engaged with. Not so in Over the Moon, Pearl Studio’s poignant musical about a Chinese girl who builds a rocket to seek out the Goddess of the Moon. The film, written by the late Audrey Wells and directed by Glen Keane, gives the stages of grief as much weight and care as the phases of the moon.

I’ve always had a thing for board games, table-top role playing games and deck-building card games. Ever since I was a kid, I had games I’d play for hours at the table, my thoughts and imagination going haywire as I built armies or took warriors on adventures or wandered fantastical lands as I battled all manner of creatures. I recently got back into playing board games again, and this was one of the titles my wife and I played recently.

Hades, the newest roguelike action RPG from Supergiant Games, has cracked the code on how to make a great roguelike game.
“You don’t actually play as Hades in Hades. Instead, you play as Zagreus, the god of the underworld’s son. Zagreus wants to escape Hell, but his progress is stopped by supernatural foes, creatures of myth, and the like. If he dies by their hand, Zagreus is promptly sent back to the house of Hades, resetting his progress.”

Disney has had enormous success with their live-action adaptations of animated classics. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King were all monster hits and more recently, Mulan performed extremely well on the Disney+ Premier Access service. If you’re a fan of these, then the future is bright, with The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Bambi and Hercules all at various stages of development (among many other sequels and spinoffs).
Now, it seems that we can add another to this list, as rumors are building of an adaptation of 2001’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire. This adventure movie boasts stunning hand-drawn animation and a beautiful aesthetic, though stumbled at the box office on its original release. While a $186 million worldwide gross on a budget of between $90-$120 million doesn’t exactly make it a bomb, Disney considered it a disappointment and plans for theme park attractions...

Zendaya will play Ronnie Spector in A24’s upcoming adaptation of the iconic rock and roll singer’s 1990 biography Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, And Madness, according to Variety. The 24-year-old Zendaya recently made history as the youngest actress to win an Emmy lead actress in a drama series. She is only the second Black woman to win the award, after Viola Davis for her role on How to Get Away with Murder in 2015. Spector personally chose Zendaya to portray her.
Former Disney Channel star Zendaya won the Emmy for her role as Rue in HBO’s Euphoria, which is produced by A24. The independent entertainment company is teaming with New Regency again. I have to be honest, on paper the new Netflix original game show series Sing On is my type of show! The whole premise of the show is that a group of singers compete to find the best karaoke singer in a sing-off with the most accurate singer going through each round. Additionally, this show is hosted by the icon that is Titus Burgess and to me, he is the perfect host for the show. All this combines together to make the wonderfully calm style of show that I personally love crammed full of incredible songs and performances throughout.
I absolutely Love Titus Burgess and really enjoy the camp energy he brings to the show. He is just his character from The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt who is incredibly sassy and wonderfully flamboyant that everything he does is iconic. Not only is he entertaining in this role, but what people have...

Zendaya is stepping into the shoes of Ronnie Spector, frontwoman of musical group the Ronettes, in an A24 and New Regency-produced biopic of her life.
Variety has confirmed that the film companies have acquired Spector’s life rights in addition to her autobiography “Be My Baby,” which Spector wrote with Vince Waldron. They are eyeing Pulitzer-winner Jackie Sibblies Drury to write the script.
The biopic will place emphasis on Spector’s early career, particularly on the formation of the Ronettes group and their subsequent signing to Phil Spector’s Philles Records. While at the label, the band recorded their hit “Be My Baby,” and Spector eventually married the record producer. The film will also follow their eventual divorce and Spector’s battle to gain back the rights to her music.
Marc Platt, who is currently producing “The Little Mermaid,” “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Wicked” film adaptations, has been tapped as a producer on the project.

Dancing With the Stars has made a lot of changes for its latest season — but the two hours of corporate synergy known as Disney Night? That’s here to stay.

It’s the most synergistic time of the year: Disney Night on “Dancing with the Stars!” And don’t worry, Carole Baskin will continue her feline theme with “The Lion King.” Because who didn’t see this coming?
The “Tiger King” star will perform the samba to “Circle of Life” on Monday, so this could be, um, interesting. How many rolls will Pasha Pashkov toss in here? And how will they recreate the iconic opening (because you know they will)?
Two dances will be performed the first time this season: the Charleston by Justina Machado and Sasha Farber, and the Argentine tango by Nev Schulman and Jenna Johnson.
Kaitlyn Bristowe has the rumba, which ought to be slightly easier on her bum ankle.

Yes, there's another Disney live-action reboot of a classic film coming and this time, it's the studio's 1953 adaptation of J.M. Barrie Peter Pan getting the three-dimensional remake. The film was announced back in April 2016 and on Sept. 25, Deadline broke the news that Black-ish star Yara Shahidi would be taking on the role of the cheeky pixie known as Tinkerbell alongside Jude Law, Ever Anderson, and Alexander Molony.
