- On pan and scan VHS prints issued since 1990, the opening title credits have been slightly altered to fit the screen. Some credits that took one line in the widescreen version were altered to fit two lines in the pan and scan version.
- The original DVD release contained a mild dialogue alteration. The "What are you waiting for? Get in!/Yes, sir." exchange has been moved to the next shot of Bond nodding and approaching the tanker, after Pam stops it. Originally, she said it right after stopping the tanker. The fact that Timothy Dalton's lips can only slightly be seen to move when he says his line confirms this alteration. However, the 2006 Ultimate Edition DVD has moved these lines back to their proper places.
- To receive a 15 certificate, the original UK cinema release was cut by the BBFC with edits to the opening whipping of Lupe, the shark attack on Leiter, a brief shot of Krest's exploding head, blood spurts from the shooting of Loti, Dario's bloody death in the grinder, Sanchez on fire, and sound effect levels of blows in certain scenes. This same print was released on VHS. For the 2000 Special Edition DVD, some cuts were waived, with the PG-13 version being passed 15 without further cuts (despite the film playing fully uncut on ITV). The BBFC waived all the cuts for the Ultimate Edition DVD release, which restored the cuts made for the PG-13 in the US and all of the original BBFC cuts.
- It is incorrect that the current version is the full uncut version. When the movie opened in cinemas in Norway, it included a longer opening, with the killings and the cutting of out the heart, that sets up the revenge story. By some unknown reason (most likely censorship) it has since been missing in all versions worldwide since. All though it wasn't more graphic then the rest of the movie, it still benefited the revenge that Bond delivered for the rest of the movie. One can still see the opening cuts a little to fast at the end, because of the shortening.
- The MPAA trimmed a few scenes to avoid an R rating. The uncut version was submitted internationally, and was released uncut in some countries. The film has been uncut worldwide on DVD since the Ultimate Edition releases.
