Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movie series is expanding with another installment after the grand success of the third movie Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was the ultimate treat for Marvel fans. Now, the upcoming Spider-Man movie, as speculation dictates, is going to be more grounded with a bit of multiversal touch.
Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in Columbia Pictures’ Spider-man: No Way Home.
If not multiversal, Spider-Man might go to its classic root, to its classic villains— Norman and Harry Osborn. New speculation recently suggested that fans could see Dune star Timothée Chalamet making his Spider-Man debut playing a villainous Harry Osborn and in this case, Kevin Feige might hire one MCU star again, this time for the role of Norman Osborn.

What are the greatest action movies of all time? It’s a controversial question, isn’t it? Any time any publication or site puts out a new list of what they consider the best action movies of all time, it can’t help but generate a ton of controversy. Nevertheless, we here at JoBlo have decided to throw our hats into the ring with a list we really hope generates some nostalgia among our viewers but also encourages them to seek out the movies on this list that they may not have seen. But first, some may wonder where superhero movies are on this list. Given how broad that genre is, we decided to stick to old-school action, so we have left them off the list, as they deserve their own ranking. There are also a few absences from the list, notably some Jackie Chan films (like Police Story), with...

Brainy political lightning rod Oliver Stone isn’t making feature films anymore. Sure, he’d love to add a 21st to his 20 films to date; he just can’t find backers. His alternate route, like many other directors today, from fellow Cannes entrant Ron Howard (“Jim Henson: Idea Man”) to Martin Scorsese, is documentaries.
Stone has churned out a career total of ten, including recent 2021 Cannes entry “JFK Revisited” (Showtime) and 2022 eco-doc “Nuclear” (Abramorama). His latest, “Lula,” marks a move to the left from his much-criticized recent portraits of dictators such as Cuba’s Fidel Castro (HBO’s “Comandante”) and Russia’s Vladimir Putin (Showtime’s four-part “The Putin Interviews”).
Since his start as a filmmaker in the 1970s, the Yale-grad-turned-Vietnam-vet, now 77, has leaned into political fiction, from “Salvador,” “Wall Street,” and “W.,” to Best Director Oscar-winners “Platoon” and “Born on the Fourth of July.” His last Oscar nomination came in 1996, for “Nixon,...

Oliver Stone is in Cannes today for a Special Screening of Lula, a documentary he co-directed with Rob Wilson about the unbelievable comeback of Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva. The film chronicles his extraordinary journey in 2022 to regain the Brazilian presidency after spending 19 months in prison. This happened after a hacker exposed a conspiracy meant to take down the labor leader in a corruption scandal that tied back to Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and the most powerful judge in the country. It’s a story you have to see to believe.
Here, Stone discusses his film, and how the four-time Oscar winner hopes to mount one final major drama after a career spanning Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street, JFK, Natural Born Killers and so many others. He also revisits his position on Vladimir Putin, whom he interviewed extensively several years ago, in light of...

Oliver Stone is more than just a filmmaker. The man enlisted in the United States Army during the time of the Vietnam War and when he returned, he decided to tell the harrowing stories of war through the art of filmmaking. His 1986 film Platoon starring was one such film, but it could’ve ended up looking a bit different if actors like Keanu Reeves and Kevin Costner had agreed to be a part of it.
A still from Platoon (1986)
So why did they turn down a film that would go on to become critically acclaimed, do great at the box office, and receive not one, but four Academy Awards? Well, given the fact that the film was based on the Vietnam War and Oliver Stone’s firsthand experience with it, the topic might have been a bit too much for the actors.

Mangaka Gege Akutami sensei may have created one of the best manga projects ever, i.e. Jujutsu Kaisen, but fans don’t have the best reviews for them personally. If anything, out of all the mangaka in the industry who have helmed multiple fan-favorite masterpieces, they would perhaps consider Akutami the least serious one.

In August 2001, Kyle Hausmann-Stokes had just graduated from high school and wanted to escape the confines of his native Wisconsin. So he enlisted in the Army. Then 9/11 happened, and the teen would eventually head to Iraq, where he became a paratrooper. As his three-year enlistment was about to end, he was hit with a stop-loss order, an involuntary extension of active duty.
“I’m crushed. I have these big plans to go to film school,” Hausmann-Stokes remembers. “I get a call one night that the colonel wants to see me in his office. I was known throughout the battalion as the film guy. I was always secretly making films of our airborne jumps and our jungle warfare training. The colonel said, ‘I think you might be destined for something different than going to war with us right now. I’ve made arrangements for you and only you to be exempt from this stop-loss.

It’s a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma.
So says Joe Pesci’s David Ferrie during a critical scene in Oliver Stone’s JFK, a movie being revisited for a few reasons. One is that Shout Factory just put out a 4K restoration that reissues both the director’s cut and theatrical cuts of these films. But, we’re also revisiting it due to the fact director Oliver Stone, more than thirty years after the film’s release, is still utterly fascinated by the assassination. His recent documentary, JFK: Through the Looking Glass, served as a bookend to the film, while another documentary, Citizen Stone, is in production and examines how the film, in some ways, served as his undoing, a notion I can’t say I agree with.
Whatever the case, JFK is a fascinating piece of work that was one of the most provocative films of the 90s.

Christopher Nolan and Peloton are on a bit of a break. The Oppenheimer director discussed his recent fitness activity at the 2024 Golden Globes after speaking out about a Peloton instructor who bashed his movie, Tenet, during a workout class.
“Nothing but love for Peloton,” Nolan said in the Globes’ press room when asked if he’d seen instructor Jenn Sherman’s response to his initial comments. “But I did not climb on it today. I might just skip it for a little while.”
Nolan’s Peloton saga first began during his speech at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards last week. “I was on my Peloton doing a high-interval workout. I’m dying,” he told the crowd. “The instructor started talking about one of my films and said, ‘Has anyone else seen this? Because that’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again.'...

When Willem Dafoe receives his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Jan. 8, the distinction will commemorate more than just a four-time Oscar nominee, but an actor so versatile that he has embodied everything from a conflicted messiah in “The Last Temptation of Christ” to the tortured father figure of “Antichrist.” Is there an actor working today with greater range?
With his deep-set eyes, sharp nose and broad smile, Dafoe has depicted his share of devils, from creepy “Nosferatu” star Max Schreck in “Shadow of the Vampire” to comic-book villain the Green Goblin in “Spider-Man 2.” But he also excels at the other end of the spectrum, as when he plays God in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” a Frankensteinian surgeon charitably committed to reanimating dead creatures, like Emma Stone’s Bella.

Christopher Nolan has begun his healing journey with fitness brand Peloton after one of the acclaimed director’s instructors dissed his movie “Tenet” during a workout class.
“Nothing but love for Peloton,” Nolan told Variety backstage at Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony, when asked if he saw instructor Jenn Sherman’s apology for taking issue his 2020 the sci-fi film’s byzantine plot. “But I did not climb on it today. I might just skip it for a little while.”
The odds of Nolan himself coming across a four-year-old recorded class has charmed the internet for days. The director received something of a consolation prize by claiming best director at the Globes — his first win in the category — where “Oppenheimer” also dominated across major film awards. Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. took best actor and best supporting actor in a motion picture drama, respectively, and the film claimed best score and best motion picture drama.

Willem Dafoe has made more than 150 movies, but in a forced break from filming he leaned into a new role. He talks about art, his new film Poor Things – and gentleman farming
Willem Dafoe is in his apartment in New York, where he is watched over by two works of art. Behind him is an oil painting of his father, a prop created for a film, which required “dynastic portraits” of his relatives. “I liked my father fine, so, there he is.” We are talking on Zoom and he spins the camera round. “But look, even better! Here’s the counterpoint. Do you see that?” To the side of him is a large, lightbox photograph of his friend and occasional collaborator, the artist Marina Abramović, standing priest-like over a naked body adorned with organs. “Anyway, you get the idea,” he says.

While many people loved the movie, Peloton instructor Jenn Sherman was not a fan.

Christopher Nolan knows all about film critics in Hollywood, but it’s safe to say he didn’t expect to hear criticism during a workout class.
While accepting the award for best director from the New York Film Critics Circle on Wednesday, the Oppenheimer filmmaker recalled when a Peloton instructor caught him by surprise, sharing her critical thoughts on one of his films.

Unless you’re getting a shout-out from an instructor, chances are quite slim that you’ll hear your name mentioned during a Peloton session… unless you’re Christopher Nolan.
While accepting the Best Director award from the New York Film Critics Circle for Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan revealed he found an unlikely critic while using his Peloton. “I was on my Peloton. I’m dying. And the instructor started talking about one of my films and said, ‘Did anyone see this? That’s a couple hours of my life I’ll never get back again!’” Nolan said. “When [film critic] Rex Reed takes a shit on your film he doesn’t ask you to work out! In today’s world, where opinions are everywhere, there is a sort of idea that film criticism is being democratized, but I for one think the critical appreciation of films shouldn’t be an instinct but it should be a profession.

You’ve heard of personal trainers. But how about a very personal trainer who disses your work while you’re exercising with her?

Nolan went on to use the anecdote as a way to tout the professionalism of the assembled film critics.

Christopher Nolan might be one of the most important and celebrated directors of his generation, but he's not for everyone. Even "Oppenheimer," which made almost $1 billion, becoming one of the biggest box office hits of 2023 and the highest grossing biopic of all time, had its detractors. Richard Brody of the New Yorker, for example, penned an insightful critique of Nolan's film that suggested the director had missed one crucial aspect of J. Robert Oppenheimer, namely that he was a "renowned aesthete." Whether you agree or not, the point is that even a major box office success and cultural phenomenon on the level of "Oppenheimer" isn't universally beloved.
Of course, Nolan has had much more to worry about in terms of critical response than Richard Brody and the New Yorker. His prior film, "Tenet," aimed for high-concept, big-budget sci-fi action but ended up bewildering pretty much anyone that watched, making it...

Everyone’s a critic — including Christopher Nolan’s very own Peloton instructor, apparently. At a ceremony for the New York Film Critics Circle, Nolan used his acceptance speech for the best director prize to comment on his appreciation for film criticism — and to share a hilarious anecdote.
Speaking on his “complex emotional relationship with critics and criticism,” Nolan highlighted the importance of film criticism as a profession in a world where seemingly everyone now has an opinion to share. The Oppenheimer director then cheekily brought up a moment in which a Peloton instructor canned one of his own films during a workout, apparently unaware that he was in the class. Nolan did not specify which film found its way onto the chopping block, but Paste Magazine movies editor Jacob Oller uncovered the clip in question: it’s of Jenn Sherman ripping Tenet.

Christopher Nolan was awarded the best director prize this year from the New York Film Critics Circle thanks to his blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” and he used his acceptance speech to wax poetic on his appreciation for film criticism. He alluded to the fact that his love for the profession has only deepened in recent years as the rise of social media and other outlets have turned every casual moviegoer into a critic with a platform to express his or her opinion.
“Directors have a complex emotional relationship with critics and criticism,” he told the audience during the Jan. 4 ceremony at New York City’s Tao Downtown. “A question we’re always asked is: Do we read reviews? Let’s start with the fact that I’m British. A typical family gathering will involve relatives saying to me, ‘You know, Christopher. You probably shouldn’t open The Guardian today.'”

The career trajectory of character actor extraordinaire Willem Dafoe is one of the more unusual among contemporary Hollywood stars. From his early days of being routinely cast as a heavy, Dafoe worked his way through the system thanks to the sheer force of his talent, finally being cast as leads, often portraying in detail such real-life figures as actor Max Schreck, artist Vincent Van Gogh and even Jesus Christ.
Among Dafoe’s early bad guy roles were as biker gang leaders in both Kathryn Bigelow‘s “The Loveless” and Walter Hill‘s “Streets of Fire.” But his performance as kindly Sgt. Elias in Oliver Stone‘s “Platoon” changed all that, resulting in his first Academy Award nomination. Three more Oscar nominations followed, and Dafoe has also earned three Golden Globe nominations and four noms from the Screen Actors Guild.

Since 2012, revered filmmaker Martin Scorsese has belonged to a select group of three-time Best Director Golden Globe winners that grew to include six members when Steven Spielberg took last year’s prize for “The Fabelmans.” Over a decade later, the ever-active octogenarian has a strong chance at rising above his fellow triple champs by achieving another directing victory for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” thus following Elia Kazan as the second quadruple honoree in this category’s 81-year history. Since this would be his 10th time competing here, he would also join Spielberg in the rare distinction of having double-digit directing mentions.
Scorsese earned his first Golden Globe Award in 2003 for “Gangs of New York” (on his sixth bid) and was then further lauded for “The Departed” (2007) and “Hugo” (2012). The film, which won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival in September, will be released by Searchlight Pictures on December 8. “I jumped on board happily,” he tells Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson. “I like the movie very much and it was a great experience.” Watch the full video interview above.
Dafoe plays Dr. Godwin Baxter, an unorthodox scientist who brings Bella Baxter (Stone) back to life after she’s been found unresponsive. In committing to any role, the actor states, “The director is very important. Do I want to do those things? Do I want to have that adventure? What do I think I will learn? How will this transform me? All those are in my head. I don’t...

If we’re talking about the holy trinity of Vietnam War movies, there’s no doubt about which ones reign supreme. Indeed, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Oliver Stone’s Platoon, and Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket will forever be regarded as the most viscerally harrowing glimpses into the physical and psychological toll that the Vietnam War had on a generation of young American men. Yet, despite the popularity of Full Metal Jacket, one can’t help but wonder how much more successful the movie would have been if weren’t released in the shadow of Platoon’s smashing success. Remember, not only did Platoon win four Oscars in 1987, including Best Picture, but it was released in theaters just five months before Full Metal Jacket. As a result, Kubrick’s undeniable classic sort of got lost in the shuffle and never received the contemporaneous accolades and attention it deserved.

Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “The Favourite” scored 10 Oscar nominations in 2019, including bids for Best Picture and Best Director for Lanthimos and a Best Actress win for Olivia Colman. Stone and Lanthimos reunite this year for “Poor Things,” which could be set to have an even better year at the Oscars than their previous film did.
“Poor Things,” from Searchlight Pictures, follows Emma Stone as Bella, who is brought back to life by Willem Dafoe‘s doctor. Bella then goes on a journey of self-discovery, aided and hindered alike by the likes of Mark Ruffalo‘s caddish lawyer and Ramy Youssef‘s hopeful suitor. The movie, which releases in US theaters on December 8, has received exquisite reviews and a near-perfect score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. As a result, we are predicting “Poor Things” to have a rich year at the upcoming Academy Awards. Here’s a full list of the categories we think...

Following a string of commercial and critical successes that made Oliver Stone the most talked-about emergent American filmmaker of the late 1980s, 1994’s Natural Born Killers was the passion project that wiped out all the goodwill granted by the likes of 1986’s Platoon and 1991’s JFK. The extraordinary formal inventiveness of the latter carried over into this film, making it the second in what would become a loose aesthetic trilogy that would include the subsequent year’s Nixon. Fittingly, this is the rambunctious middle child of the three, eschewing its peers’ evocatively impressionistic approach to political history for a caustic present-day satire.
Admittedly, “satire” might be a generous assessment of this film’s bull-in-a-china-shop approach. Heavily reworking a more straightforward, Badlands-inspired screenplay by Quentin Tarantino, Stone warped the story of spree killers Mickey (Woody Harrelson) and Mallory Knox (Juliette Lewis) around a host of contemporary sensationalized crime stories like...

After 2011’s “Nobel Thief,” 2012’s “Uncle Shyamal Turns off the Lights,” 2015’s “Peace Haven,” 2016’s “Mi Amor” and 2019’s “Aadhaar,” Indian filmmaker Suman Ghosh returns again to the Busan International Film Festival.
“The Scavenger of Dreams” has its world premiere in the ‘A Window On Asian Cinema’ strand. A treatise on social inequality, the film follows Birju and Shona, trash collectors who live in a Kolkata slum with their young daughter. They scour the city’s affluent areas by day for garbage and their experiences become the grist of stories for their daughter by night.
Like “Aadhaar,” “The Scavenger of Dreams,” then called “The Waste Collector,” was also at Busan’s Asian Project Market, where it gained significant exposure. The germ of the film was from a New York Times article about waste collectors that Ghosh read years ago that stayed with him.
