Hannah Marks started acting when she was 6 years old, after seeing her mother’s acting reel. And she’s pretty much worked nonstop, from roles in the films “Accepted” and “The Runaways” to the cast of “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.” In fact, just last year she took her first vacation — though she confesses to recording several self-tapes during it.
In recent years, she has also made a (forgive me) mark behind the camera as a filmmaker, beginning with writing and directing “After Everything,” The indie film starred Jeremy Allen White as a young man diagnosed with bone cancer who embarks on a new relationship, premiering at the SXSW Film Festival in 2018.
That same year, she landed the coveted directing job of the film adaptation of John Green’s beloved novel “Turtles All the Way Down.” The story focuses on a teenage girl named Aza (Isabela Merced) struggling with...

Revenues and profits fell at Poor Things super-indie Fremantle last year as the outfit’s lofty €3B ($3.2B) revenue target draws ever nearer.
In a difficult market, Fremantle’s turnover fell slightly by 3.5% to €2.26B, while adjusted Ebita was down by the sharper 14.2% to €139M.
Fremantle’s €3B revenue target set for 2025/26 has been well publicized and the company now has just a year to achieve the goal.
After the results period unveiled today, Fremantle spent more than €200M ($216M) on Death in Paradise group Asacha Media Group and 80% of Singapore’s Beach House Pictures. This followed a quiet 2023 for acquisitions.
Fremantle owner Rtl said today that it still aims to achieve the €3B target and will continue to invest across “entertainment, drama and film, and documentaries – both organically and via acquisitions.”
It added that Fremantle’s Adjusted Ebita margin is expected to increase to 9% by 2026.

In Berlin with “The Roundup: Punishment,” part four of the action movie series that he created and stars in, the larger-than-life Korean American Don Lee finds himself simultaneously in multiple timely and lucrative businesses.
These include the Marvel superhero business, the Korea-to-Hollywood remake business, “The Roundup” franchise and its multiple spinoff possibilities. Lee may even be in the business of saving Korean cinema, which is currently having one of its periodic wobbles.
“What we have to do is make really, really fun entertaining movies. Put them in cinemas, so that everyone will come back to the theaters. One of my goals is to entertain more people,” Lee told Variety on the fringes of the Berlin Film Festival, where “Punishment” has its world premiere as an out-of-competition gala screening.

Stories began to circulate on Wednesday that Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming service would be shut down in coming months.
There may be reason to pump the breaks on reports that Amazon is sunsetting Freevee. An exclusive report from Ad Week laid out details that indicated that Amazon planned to shut down its free ad-supported streaming platform, but Vulture’s West Coast editor Josef Adalian was first to report that he had received word from Amazon representatives that no such changes were in the offing for the service. The Streamable was able to confirm Vulture’s reporting as an Amazon representative said, “There are no changes to Freevee.”

Freevee isn’t going away, Amazon says.
With Amazon’s Prime Video launch of ads by default last month, rumors and speculation have heated up that the tech giant would no longer have a strategic need for Freevee — its free, ad-supported streaming service that is separate from Prime Video. A Feb. 21 report by Adweek, citing anonymous sources, said that Amazon will “sunset” Freevee, likely in the second quarter and possibly before the NewFronts in late April.
Asked for comment, Amazon said the Adweek report is inaccurate.
“There are no changes to Freevee,” the rep said in an email to Variety. “Amazon Freevee remains an important streaming offering providing both Prime and non-Prime customers thousands of hit movies, shows, and originals, all for free.”

Fresh off of winning her second career Grammy, Kylie Minogue has signed with UTA for live representation in the United States and Canada and acting worldwide.
The Australian singer won the best pop dance recording Grammy — a new award — earlier this month for her viral hit “Padam Padam.” The song is from her 16th studio album, Tension, which was released last year and reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
Minogue, 55, won her first Grammy — best dance recording — in 2004 for her groovy hit “Come Into My World.” Her hits also include “Can’t Get You Out of My Head,” “The Loco-motion” and “Love at First Sight,” among others.
She has sold more than 80 million records worldwide, earned five billion streams and launched nine U.K. No. 1 albums. She’s won three Brit Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards, and is the only female artist to score a No.

Happy Amazon with Ads Day!
It’s January 29, 2024, which can only mean one thing: commercials have finally come to Amazon Prime Video. Whether you realize it yet or not, unless you’ve manually opted out (to the tune of an additional $2.99 per month), you are in on Prime Video with ads. And that’s just the way Amazon likes it. Prime Video customers probably won’t like it as much; at the very least, many of them are about to be confused.
Amazon already has an ad-supported streaming-video service, Freevee. And Freevee, unlike say Pluto TV to Paramount+, is within the Prime Video ecosystem.
Freevee “has always been an odd duck,” Tvrev co-founder and lead analyst Alan Wolk told IndieWire. “I suspect that most people who watch Freevee are not even aware they are watching it.”
The former IMDb TV is a combination on-demand and Fast platform. Given its integration with Prime Video,...

William Van Rest has set up Jem Media Ventures, a UK-based company designed to help business, brands and talent create ancillary income from IP, including programs and films, plus other assets and unused inventory.
Jem will look to work with producers and distributors to commercially optimize their IP, find IP for companies to license into their operations to develop new commercial products around fandoms and audiences, and establish partnerships with brands and advertisers.
As Jem gears up for a formal launch, the company is already working with unnamed VR firm on several initiatives, helped a global distributor secure a deal to launch a restaurant for an unnamed major TV format and helped a tech start-up win a major media business tender. Season 3, slated to begin filming in and around Koh Samui, Phuket, and Bangkok in February, will follow a new group of guests at another White Lotus property.
“It’s going to be a supersized White Lotus,” White said of Season 3 back in November. “It’s going to be longer, bigger, crazier. I don’t know what people will think, but I am super excited, so at least for my own barometer, that’s a good thing.”

Holiday Streaming
Australian soap “Neighbours” will air episodes through the Christmas holiday and feature a holiday-themed episode arc. These will include the wedding of couple Chloe Brennan and Elly Conway, played by April Rose Pengilly and Jodi Gordon respectively.
“Neighbours” ran for more than three decades and nearly 9,000 episodes before being canceled in 2022 when the show’s primary funder, U.K.’s Channel 5, pulled out. Freevee then picked up the rights from “Neighbours” producer and distributor Fremantle. The new season is a continuation of the long-running daily drama series about the lives, loves and challenges of the residents on Ramsay Street in Erinsborough, Australia, a fictional suburb of Melbourne.
The new series launched on Sept. 18 this year and picks up two years after the finale left off. The holiday timeline marks the first time in years that “Neighbours” will air continuous new episodes the week of the Dec. 25 and Jan.

Australia’s federal government has tweaked the rules of its producer offset system so that soap operas and other drama series can qualify for subsidy. Channel Seven’s “Home and Away” will become newly eligible.
The producer offset gives a tax rebate to producers for expenditure on eligible Australian films, television and other projects. Currently, a drama series must spend at least A$500,000 per hour in qualifying Australian production expenditure (costs incurred for goods and services used or provided in Australia).
It provides a 40% rebate for feature film and a 30% rebate for productions on other platforms, calculated as a percentage of a production’s qualifying Australian production expenditure.
With the new system, drama series that spend at least $35 million ($23.5 million) per season in qualifying Australian production expenditure, but fall short of the per hour spending requirement, will be newly eligible for the offset.
The new per season threshold will apply...

Erinsborough is in for a rough time.
Nicolette, Wendy, and Sadie's well-intentioned protest against the school closure will quickly spiral out of control, becoming a full-fledged riot on Neighbours during the week of 12-04-23.
According to spoilers, it'll end with at least one person under arrest and one in the hospital with severe injuries, leading to serious drama.
As an American fan, I can't help drawing parallels to the events of January 6, 2021, though since Neighbours is an Australian series, that may be coincidental.
In any case, Susan tried to tell Nicolette that this was a bad idea, so I don't feel bad for Nicolette if she gets in trouble -- and spoilers say she will.
By the time the riot is quelled, not only has there been severe damage to the school building, but Melanie is seriously injured. Both these events will lead to Nicolette's arrest for organizing the rally.

Heartbreak was inevitable for Mackenzie.
She's finally thrown herself back into the dating pool, only for her new potential boyfriend to be Holly's no-good ex. And to make matters worse, Ed took off with Mackenzie's wedding ring -- her only tangible reminder of Hendrix.
Mackenzie's grief surfaced on Neighbours during the week of 10-23-23; she wasn't the only one. Nell talked about Sonya's death in therapy, while Reece finally shared her secret with Byron (and viewers.) What a week!

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell showcase their much-discussed chemistry in the first trailer for Sony Pictures’ romantic comedy “Anyone but You,” premiering in theaters on Dec. 22.
Directed by Will Gluck (“Easy A”), “Anyone but You” has been touted as a loose modernization of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” The film’s official logline reads, “When college arch-nemeses reunite years after graduation for a destination wedding, they pretend to be a couple for their own personal reasons. But through pretending, they actually fall in love.”
“Let’s just tell everyone we’re together,” Sweeney says to Powell while they take a sunset sailboat ride. “There’s no way we could convince anyone we actually like each other,” he responds. Though the two roll their eyes, footage flashing throughout the trailer makes it clear their chemistry is undeniable.

Mischa Barton is opening up about the toll fame had on her as a teenager.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the actress, who rose to stardom at age 17 after starring as Marissa Cooper on The O.C., recalled the “trauma” she endured working in the industry when she was younger.
“You can go to therapy every day for the rest of your life,” Barton said. “But there’s just a certain amount of trauma [from] all that I went through, particularly in my early 20s, that just doesn’t go away overnight.”
The Neighbours star explained that she felt like she was never “prepared for that level of fame.”
She added, “It has never been something that I have sought out. I really would much rather be anonymous.”
But being anonymous was basically impossible for Barton because she was constantly followed by paparazzi during that time in her life.

Penn, who stars and serves as executive producer on the show, will participate in a panel discussion with Fox and Curry. The session will see them discuss ways in which the series explores themes of identity, fame and social media absurdities.

Not so long ago, the only Australian TV shows imported by the UK and US were soaps and the odd kids’ series. Neighbours, Home & Away, Prisoner: Cell Block H, Heartbreak High, and child trauma factory Round the Twist went overseas, but not much else.
It didn’t make for a very complete picture. 30 years ago, if you’d asked a British person to conjure up Australia based solely on its available TV output, they’d have pictured a land of bait shops, haunted lighthouses, prison wings, and cul de sacs where good neighbours become good friends. Ask one now, and thanks to streaming, it’d be a much broader church, based on viewing comedies, thrillers, dramas, detective shows and more.

In the three decades since Kylie Minogue’s debut, the Australian soap actress turned international pop star has released 16 studio albums and, thanks to the recent success of “Padam Padam,” racked up an impressive 35 Top 10 hits in the U.K. Her career trajectory, however, wasn’t always assured.
After her initial breakout success on both sides of the Atlantic, with a cover of Little Eva’s “The Loco-Motion,” Minogue struggled to maintain interest among U.S. audiences. By the mid-1990s, she was eager to shake off her bubblegum-pop image, collaborating with the likes of Nick Cave and Towa Tei, and taking more creative control with the experimental Impossible Princess. The album flopped, but a turn-of-the-century renaissance found the singer embracing her dance-pop roots and cementing her status as a gay icon.

“The O.C.” alum Mischa Barton guest starring on a reboot of long-running Australian soap opera “Neighbours” was probably not on anybody’s 2023 bingo card. The show was cancelled last spring, but — in a twist that could rival the soap’s melodramatic storylines — it was brought back from the dead by Amazon Freevee eight months later.
The reboot has given the show a new lease of life, and as well as welcoming back many of the old cast members it has also embraced some new ones – including Barton.
Ahead of the “Neighbours’” launch on Sept. 18, Barton sat down with Variety to discuss how she wound up joining the show, her next project and whether a reboot of “The O.C.” could also ever be in the cards.
How did you end up as a guest star on “Neighbours”?
Over the years they’ve asked me a couple of times and tried to get me for different roles.

“Quantum Leap” will come back for Season 2 at NBC with two new series regulars: Peter Gadiot and Eliza Taylor.
One of the few scripted projects returning to broadcast TV this fall amid the Hollywood strikes, “Quantum Leap” is a sequel to the 1989 to 1993 NBC drama of the same name and set 30 years later after Dr. Sam Beckett (Scott Bakula) stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished. In the new series, Raymond Lee stars as Ben Song, who makes an unauthorized leap into the past, leaving his team behind to solve the mystery of why he did it.
Taylor will play Hannah Carson, who is described as “a complex young woman who may be more than she appears” and will be introduced in Episode 3.
Gadiot will play Tom Westfall, a U.S. Army Officer, former special forces, who is now high up in Army Intelligence. He is described as “thoughtful, centered,...

Unlike most American soaps, Australia's Neighbours usually avoids back-from-the-dead stories.
Only two characters ever have gotten a miraculous resurrection (Harold Bishop and Dee Bliss), although many have returned as ghostly visitors.
But the soap itself is another story. Several months after its cancellation, Freevee on Amazon picked up Neighbours.
This means North American fans can access episodes online for the first time since 2014, when it was briefly streamed on Hulu.
Whether you're a new viewer curious about the series or a long-time fan relieved about the revival, you probably want to know what to expect. We've got all the news in this post; check for updates as the premiere date draws closer.

As Magnum P.I. prepares to air the second half of its fifth and final season on NBC starting October 4, a new streaming deal could give the beloved show new hope of returning. According to TVLine, the reboot’s first four seasons will land on Amazon’s free streaming service Freevee on Friday, September 1, making it the only place where viewers can watch old episodes. Currently, NBC’s streamer Peacock only carries the fifth and final season. Could Freevee give the show another chance of survival? After all, Freevee has brought back the previously axed long-running Australian soap opera Neighbours, which is set to return on September 18. The Jay Hernandez and Perdita Weeks-led Magnum P.I. was already saved once by NBC after CBS dropped it after four seasons. However, in June, it was reported that NBC opted not to order additional episodes beyond the ten-episode second half of Season 5, choosing...

If you've been dying to watch the first four seasons of the Magnum P.I. reboot but haven't been able to find it, then this is the news you've been waiting for.
According to TV Line, the first four seasons of the Jay Hernandez procedural will be available to stream on the Amazon-owned Freevee beginning Friday, September 1, 2023.
The first four seasons will be available to stream for free with ads, but if you've been keeping up with shows like Almost Paradise, then you're probably aware the ads are not as bad as they could be.
News of the show landing a new streaming home comes as the series prepares for its last-ever episodes on NBC.
Magnum P.I. has had a long and storied history, having begun its life on CBS.
At the time of its cancellation, observers and fans were shocked because the Hawaii-set drama was one of the network's most-watched shows.
