- The UK theatrical version of the film was cut by the BBFC to heavily edit scenes of gore, including shots of legs being bitten off, a car being destroyed by the alligator and victims being eaten alive during the garden party attack, and to remove one instance of the word "fuck" in order for the film to receive an "A" (PG) certificate. The cuts were all waived in 1991 when the certificate was raised to a "15", and all subsequent releases of the film are completely uncut.
- The Catalina Home Video version of the film cuts out the blood floating to the top of the water in the pool scene, the line "I'm gonna kick its ass" is changed to "I'm gonna kick its tail" and the line "pain in the ass" is changed to just "pain"
- One or more extra scenes are said to be included in old TV versions of the film. In one such extra scene, a woman is outside hanging up clothes while her baby is with her. When her phone rings, she goes inside to answer it, leaving the baby out in the yard. When a loud crashing sound is heard off-screen, the woman gets off the phone and goes back outside. She sees that her back yard is a mess, part of the fence is smashed in and flattened, the laundry basket she left out is overturned and she becomes hysterical when she realizes that her baby is missing. She approaches an upturned laundry basket, turns it over and finds the baby. The scene then cuts away. The giant alligator does not attack either the baby or the mother.
- The Catalina Home Video version of the film not only cuts out the blood floating to the top of the water in the pool scene and all the profanity, it also cuts one second in the scene where Brock is exploring the alley with the Chief.
