Volkswagen of America is marking 75 years in the U.S. with a Super Bowl ad featuring Herbie the Love Bug and a swirl of other pop-culture highlights.
The 60-second commercial (watch an extended 2-minute version above) will air during the third quarter of Sunday’s game on CBS and also on the Spanish-language telecast on Univision. Paramount is charging as much as $7 million for 30 seconds of commercial time on the game, so it’s a sizable investment by the automaker.
Set to Neal Diamond’s 1971 hit “I Am… I Said,” the spot is titled “An American Love Story.” It is directed by Lance Acord, who also directed Volkswagen’s 2011 commercial “The Force,” a popular spot featuring a boy in a Darth Vader helmet. That piece of Star Wars iconography is one of many pop-culture references that fly by as the commercial rolls from the German brand’s arrival on U.

After John Carpenter made "Halloween" in 1978, the director wasn't terribly interested in making a sequel. When it came time to write the screenplay for "Halloween II," however, a reluctant Carpenter sat in front of his typewriter, hammered on beers, kind of at a loss as to where this story was going to go. It was only by mere creative desperation that Carpenter conceived of the notion that Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) was secretly Michael Myers' sister.
In the first "Halloween," Michael Myers was played by various actors, although mostly by Nick Castle, an old friend of Carpenter's and a film director in his own right. In "Halloween II," Michael was played by a stuntman named Dick Warlock, an experienced performer who appeared in films like "The Love Bug" (he drove Herbie), "Blazing Saddles," and Carpenter's "Escape from New York."

No one could have predicted what it was like sitting in the middle of the Jonas Brothers’ second sold out night at Yankee Stadium. The trio of Nick, Joe and Kevin rose to stardom in the Aughts as Disney’s handsome, Christian answer to Hanson, but not even Disney could prepare for the grip the brothers had on teen culture between 2007 and 2010. They were all excellent songwriters who needed little aid in the studio, plus tabloid-baiting romantic menaces amongst their fellow teen superstar peers, Disney and otherwise.

The Jonas Brothers played their first of two shows at Yankee Stadium in New York on Saturday to kick off “The Tour,” their 90-plus date international live trek.
Similar to their early 2023 Broadway residency, the Yankee Stadium show consisted of a career-spanning, 60-song set that featured separate acts dedicated to each of the trio’s five albums: 2007’s self-titled Hollywood Records debut, 2008’s A Little Bit Longer, 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times, 2019’s Happiness Begins, and portions of their latest effort, May’s The Album, performed in spurts throughout. A mini-set of songs from their solo projects was also included, treating fans to full-band renditions of Nick Jonas’s 2014 hit “Jealous” and 2015’s “Cake by the Ocean” by Joe Jonas’s band Dnce.
To mark the ceremonious opening night, the concert boasted special guests Kirk Franklin, producer Jon Bellion, and a gospel choir for a run-through of The Album single “Walls.

Long ago, the 1950s ended and Disney never really got over it.
With the right kind of eyes, a casual viewer can look at the early days of Walt Disney Studios as their heyday. Walt himself was still alive and using his aggressive business acumen to produce visually innovative and award-winning animated shorts that were helping put the studio on the map. Without the Silly Symphonies, animation would not be the same. Warner Bros. outstripped Disney's fare with their cheekier, funnier shorts in the 1940s and 1950s, but the folks at Warner's Termite Terrace were very open about the fact that Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes were ripping off Disney's Silly Symphonies name. Disney Animation broke onto the scene in 1937 with the release of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," still celebrated as one of the best of all animated films to this day.

It's a Taylor Swift summer. Apart from taking over the world with her Eras Tour and latest single "Cruel Summer," Swift has now returned with another rerecorded album: "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)." The record dropped on July 7 - 13 years after Swift released the original version of "Speak Now" in 2010.
In a May 5 Instagram post, the star described "Speak Now" as a project full of "brutal honesty, unfiltered diaristic confessions, and wild wistfulness." Notably, it's rumored to include lyrics referencing some of Swift's most famous exes.
"Better Than Revenge," which is speculated to be about Joe Jonas, is considered to be one of her most unfiltered tracks since it's believed to not only allude to the pair's messy breakup but also Jonas's old flame Camilla Belle. So, what's the story behind the song? Let's unpack the rumored meaning behind "Better Than Revenge."

“As you all know as fans of Bruce [Campbell]’s, he is known for his incredibly wide range. He can play not only people who look like him, but people who look and act like him,” quipped Dana Gould, creator of Stan Against Evil and former The Simpsons writer/producer/voice actor. “Bruce is a Renaissance man, by which I mean he is incredibly old. But he is aging like a fine wine: largely out of the public view.”

Cars have played a vital role on screen for over a century, and some have even surpassed to lead as the feature character, protagonist and villain.
Cars have evolved in design since Carl Benz patented his Benz Patent-Motorwagen in 1886 — from the legendary 1949 Mercury Cope in Rebel Without a Cause, the sophisticated 1964 Aston Martin in James Bond’s Goldfinger through to the futuristic design of the Batmobile in Batman Begins.
Successful franchises including The Fast and the Furious; Back to the Future and Transformers have all been down to the success of the motor vehicles that have played a vital role featuring as their central lead and gone on to create iconic moments in cinema.

The year of 1969 saw the moon landing of the Apollo 11’s Eagle module, Richard Nixon sworn in as the 37th president of the United States, the Stonewall Riots in Greenwich Village ushering in the gay rights movement, the Tate-La Bianca murders by the Manson Family, the landmark Woodstock Music and Arts Fair which attracts 400,000, the tragic and violent Rolling Stones concert at the Altamont Speedway and even Tiny Tim marrying Miss Vicki on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”

From lady “Ghostbusters” to talk of a female James Bond, Hollywood has taken a shine to remaking classic movies or TV shows with gender-swapped leads as a way of mixing up a tried and true formula. But the trend dates back farther than to just the last few years. The latest example of this is “What Men Want” opening Friday, which swaps out Mel Gibson for Taraji P. Henson. But here are some other movies that looked to remake something old with not just a fresh face but from an entirely different point of view.
“His Girl Friday” (1940)
Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell move a mile a minute and have a natural chemistry as reporters Walter Burns and Hildy Johnson in Howard Hawks’s screwball comedy classic “His Girl Friday.” But missing from its source material, both the play and the movie “The Front Page” by playwright Ben Hecht, is...

The world would be a much better place if Bruce Campbell had been allowed to develop and star in a Dick Tracy TV series.
In the late 1990s, the great Bruce Campbell found himself in Disney's orbit, appearing in the 1997 TV movie version of The Love Bug and seven episodes of Ellen on Disney's ABC network.
During this period, Campbell landed a development deal with Disney, which unfortunately didn't lead to any major starring roles or projects, but one property under Disney's control caught his eye as he was browsing through a list of properties under their control: the most famous comic strip detective in history, Dick Tracy.
This story comes to light in Bruce Campbell's latest book, Hail to the Chin: Further Confessions of a B Movie Actor, the delightful sequel to his equally delightful If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor.

If Matt Reeves’ much-anticipated “War on the Planet of the Apes” (20th Century Fox) opens Friday to an expected $70 million or more, that would put it ahead (in domestic returns at least) of such recent high altitude-franchise stumbles as “Alien: Covenant,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Transformers.”
Several factors contribute to the elevated respect for the series, going back almost half a century to when the first film, never intended as anything other than a standalone, became a surprise success in 1968.
Let’s track some curious highlights on the unusual trajectory that brings us to the ninth entry in the longest running English-language film series other than James Bond:
The Genesis Was a Stand-Alone Novel
Pierre Boule was well-known for the World War II novel “The Bridge on the River Kwai” which became a David Lean Best Picture winner and massive worldwide hit in the late 1950s.

Coleen Gray in 'The Sleeping City' with Richard Conte. Coleen Gray after Fox: B Westerns and films noirs (See previous post: “Coleen Gray Actress: From Red River to Film Noir 'Good Girls'.”) Regarding the demise of her Fox career (the year after her divorce from Rod Amateau), Coleen Gray would recall for Confessions of a Scream Queen author Matt Beckoff: I thought that was the end of the world and that I was a total failure. I was a mass of insecurity and depended on agents. … Whether it was an 'A' picture or a 'B' picture didn't bother me. It could be a Western movie, a sci-fi film. A job was a job. Clean-cut Disney actor who co-starred with cats, dogs, chimps and Herbie the Love Bug
Mickey Mouse apart, the figure who most represented Walt Disney Productions in the 1960s was the clean-cut actor Dean Jones. Jones, who has died aged 84, starred as the bumbling, somewhat bland, hero in five entertaining kiddie movies with animals in the title: That Darn Cat! (1965), The Ugly Dachshund (1966), Monkeys, Go Home! (1966), The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit (1968) and The Love Bug (1968). The last of these starred not strictly speaking an animal, nor an insect, but a white Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own, ostensibly owned by the unsuccessful racing car driver Jim Douglas, played by Jones.
Happily, Herbie – as the cuddly, anthropomorphic auto is christened – helps Jim win an all-important race through the Sierra Nevada mountains against his nemesis, the villainous Thorndyke (David Tomlinson) in his sleek Italian Thorndyke Special. Jones, who did...

Dean Jones, who starred in some of the most memorable live-action Disney flicks of the 1960s and '70s, died in Los Angeles on Monday of Parkinson's disease. He was 84.
Jones rose to stardom thanks to a handful of roles in successful Disney family films like "That Darn Cat!" and "The Love Bug," the latter of which introduced the world to Herbie, the Volkswagen Beetle with human-like tendencies. Jones was offered the lead role in 1965's "That Darn Cat!," opposite Hayley Mills, by Walt Disney himself, after impressing the studio head with his part on NBC sitcom "Ensign O'Toole."
He starred in many more Disney films, including "Monkeys, Go Home," "Million Dollar Duck," and "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo." Jones also had a small part in Elvis Presley's 1957 classic "Jail House Rock," and appeared in "Clear and Present Danger," ''Beethoven," and "Other People's Money," among others, including a...

There was a time no too long away that the Disney company was only known for animation. But after enormous success in that arena, Uncle Walt decided he needed to branch out into live action. After dipping his toe in the water with “true-life” nature shorts, he jumped all in with several features produced and filmed in Europe. Then he went all out with 1954’s smash 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. Now, as with his animated features, these films usually played to family audiences. Walt had something of a studio staple of stars with the likes of Fred MacMurray, Hayley Mills, and Kurt Russell , He even had the top grossing film of 1968, The Love Bug. Really. After Walt passed on, the new studio heads in the 1980’s decided to branch out into more adult subject matter for new features. But these would not go out under the Disney name and so...

I didn't even realize there was a problem. And, believe me, I understand that as problems go, this is not a life-threatening one or a world-altering one… but it's something that finally caught my attention as I realized how we were starting to instill some bad habits in the boys. Rather, they were starting to pick up some bad habits, and I was allowing them to take root. And based on the last column I published in this series, it's definitely something I've encouraged. I love that my kids have a fairly broad palette in terms of what they will or won't watch with me. One of my proudest moments as a film nerd dad was when Toshi had a friend over and I heard him trying to convince his buddy to watch a Charlie Chaplin film. Black and white has never been a problem for them. Abbot and Costello,...

You haven’t paid attention to some of these titles for a while, and it’s about time you got the chance to catch them on Blu-Ray. The best part is that there’s a great mix of releases hitting. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is all but lost in the cultural consciousness, and it deserves a return. The Academy Award-winning movie from the year I was born is filled with a lot of fun and adventure, and like most Disney films, holds up well for a whole new generation.

Walt Disney passed away December 15, 1966, and in the decade that followed, the Walt Disney Company struggled to define itself. Should the company stay beholden to Walt and his vision, asking themselves what Walt would do, or should they take the opportunity to try something new? The decades that followed Walt’s death were a mix of trying to recreate old magic and experimenting with new genres and styles.
Good – Bedknobs and Broomsticks
In Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Disney was returning to a tried-and-true formula, one that had worked beautifully in Mary Poppins. The screenplay was based on a book series by an English children’s author, the story of a magical woman and the children under her care. Mary Poppins’ director Robert Stevenson helmed the project, which combined live action and animation. Robert and Richard Sherman, the team responsible for Mary Poppins as well as numerous other classic Disney songs, wrote the music and lyrics.

When people speak of the possibility of alternate dimensions, they leave out the one closest to us all. We like to imagine a universe so similar to our own, nearly identical to the world in which we live if not for one difference. Maybe in one dimension, Bill Clinton was ousted from office, not just thrown up for impeachment. Maybe in another dimension, HD-DVD won the high-definition home-media war instead of Blu-ray. Or maybe, in some beautiful reality, Scott Norwood didn’t miss that field goal in the Super Bowl against the New York Giants. The possibilities are tantalizing because they are literally endless. In all the wonder and curiosity, however, most of us fail to recognize that there already exists another universe snuggled up tightly to ours,...

London, Oct 16: A vintage Ferrari that starred in Disney's 'The Love Bug' has been put up for sale for a staggering 4.7 million pounds.
