He was the son of a Puerto Rican seaman. He was self-educated and spent much of his childhood in Brazil singing on the streets to raise money for food. He became an actor after having been a circus performer, radio actor, and vaudeville performer. He worked in the chorus of the 1927 stage production of the musical "Show Boat". Black American film historian Donald Bogle considers Hernandez's early success in films during the early twentieth century to have been an event that paved the way for the high visibility and success of Black Actor and Academy Award winner Sidney Poitier.- Actor

She died on 31 May 2013 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.- Known for his hitting prowess on offense and his strong, accurate throwing arm on defense, Roberto Clemente carved out a Hall of Fame career over his 18 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, compiling a .317 lifetime batting average and collecting an even 3,000 hits. He was the National League's Most Valuable Player in 1966 and was voted MVP of the 1971 World Series in which the Pirates defeated the Baltimore Orioles. He was killed in a mission-of-mercy plane crash while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake-stricken Nicaragua. Clemente was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame in 1973, only the second player to have had the required five-year waiting period before being eligible waived.

Jose Torres was a member of the 1956 US Olmpic Boxing Team. As an amateur boxer he won the 1958 Inter-City Golden Glives Boxing Championship. Turned professional on May 24, 1958 knocking out Sgt. Gene Hamilton in one round in Broojlyn, New York. Was undefeated until 1963. With a record of 26-0-1 with 21 knockouts, he was knocked out for the only time in his career by hard-punching Florentino Fernandez in 5 rounds in San Juan on May 26, 1963. Torres rebounded with victories over top-rated Don Fullmer, Jose Gonzalez, Gomemo Brennan, and Carl "Bobo" Olsen to earn a World Title shot. Torres knocked-out Willie Pastrano on March 30, 1965 in New York to win the World's Lightheavyweight Boxing Title. Made three successful title defenses before losing the championship in an upset to ancient Dick Tiger. Torres made an ill-advised comeback on July 14, 1969 against Charlie "Devil" Green. Torres was knocked down twice in the first round, and knocked cold. However, he was dragged back to his corner, revived, and went on to knockout Green in the next round. Torres retired after the fight with a 41-3-1 record. He wrote a novel about Muhammad Ali and even flirted with the idea of coming back to fight Ali in 1970.- Actor

Born of a Catalan father and Puerto Rican mother in the small town of Vendrell, Spain, Casals began his career performing music with his father Charles in church. One of 9 children, Casals became an international sensation due to his musical style, however with the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and Franco's eventual victory and rise in Spain, Casals self-exiled himself to Puerto Rico, where he died in 1973.- Tigre Pérez was born in Cuba. - A major Puerto Rican actor and television producer, Luis Vigoreaux helped revolutionized Puerto Rican television. A product of the first generation of Puerto Rican actors to appear on television, Vigoreaux became a staple to island audiences every week. In 1958, he met future wife, actress Lydia Echevarria and soon they were married. After years of marriage, their marriage was headed to the rocks. On his way to work in January 1983, Vigoreaux's car disappeared and he was reported missing. He was found murdered in the trunk of his car. After investigations, police concluded that his wife, Lydia, hired two hitmen to kill her husband. She was found guilty of murder and faced life in prison. In 2000, Governor Pedro Rosselló released Echevarria amidst a lot of protests. She claims her innocence to this date.
