"Careful what you draw." Another chilling new horror short under 5 minutes has launched online, proving that you can pull off some good scares in just a few minutes. The Drawing is the latest horror short made by filmmaker Jay Salahi - who also released the feature film Northwood Pie last year and the hilariously awesome microwave horror short called Ding... You're Dead earlier this year (it's also worth a watch). The Drawing short has been playing at festivals all year, ending up with the Audience Award at HorrorHaus and winning 1st Place at the Spooky Film Festival. An artist is haunted by a figure from her drawing - starring Annika Foster & Destiny Mounce. Salahi says he was flexing his muscles as a filmmaker trying to make a short "driven mostly by visuals, practicing suspense and tension, not re-using any angles and packing as many little organic horror beats as possible in under 3 minutes.

"We talked about nothing – it was the best conversation I've ever had..." There's a fun little indie, stoner comedy throwback out now called Northwood Pie, marking the feature directorial debut of flmmaker Jay Salahi. It's out to watch now but this is the first time we've seen the trailer. Community college burn out in the making, Crispin, lands his first job at the local, rundown Northwood Pizza. And through his experiences with friends, coworkers, and a kindling relationship, Crispin learns to embrace his higher ambitions. Salahi explains how they made this: "it's a little coming of age stoner rom-com in a pizza place. Northwood Pie was made on the weekends with friends for just 12,000 and was inspired by Clerks, El Mariachi, Slacker, etc. I wanted to share it as another example for all filmmakers out there that they can and should just go out and make something! ... No film school needed.

I’m not going to lie, I’m really starting to enjoy the trashy nature of these horror/thriller themed Lifetime movies. I think it’s the unapologetic nature of their films, they remind me very much of my video renting heyday, when the sexploitation films of filmmakers like Jag Mundhra were popular and Single White Female inspired a gluttony of similar ‘vicious vixens’ revenge-style films. It also seems, at least to me, that Lifetime has taken the reigns from the likes of Syfy, who years ago produced cheap but fun movies that riffed on bigger budget movies and, ultimately, made their films almost a genre of their own. Lifetime is doing the same with their films – taking their traditional over the top dramas but scaling them back a little,...

The world of film is highly competitive.
So few movies make from to the screen, but with the advent of on-demand and worldwide streaming services, there is a much better chance of heartfelt projects seeing the light of day.
Northwood Pie is one of those small projects that wouldn't seem destined for greatness but manages to surprise for a sweet look at suburban youth.
The movie was written by Todd Knaak and Jay Salahi, who also produced the film with a $12,000 budget. Knaak leads the cast and Salahi directs. They are a talented couple of guys.
How I know they're talented is that they made a very watchable and heartwarming film about millennials growing up in Irvine, California on a shoestring budget.
And while the subject matter would seem like it would transverse any budgetary constraints, when it comes to casting and dodging the sometimes less-than-awesome viewing experience you get without a larger budget,...
