May comes to a close with a quieter weekend full of odds and ends and nothing particularly wide in terms of studio releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
After a fairly disappointing Memorial Day weekend, the month ends with a number of moderately wide releases. Since most of these new films are smaller, few theater counts have been reported, making it tougher to determine how some of them might perform, though it’s likely that only one will be getting a wide enough release to potentially break into the Top 5. Otherwise, we’re looking at a repeat of the Top 4 with the slightest chance that “The Garfield Movie” might pass “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” with few of the new releases targeting family audiences.

Inspiration does not ask before striking, it just does. Anything and everything can become an inspiration if an artist has the perception for it. One Piece is one such work. Inspiration asks not what it can give you but what you can make of it. In a similar way, Eiichiro Oda has set a path for many to follow. He took the road not taken and made the grass greener as he walked.
Nami in One Piece | Credit: Toei Animation
There were many to follow in his path. Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball inspired many, enabling a chain effect of the creation of One Piece, and then those who took inspiration from it. There were many who found themselves taking notes from the Straw Hat Pirates. Out of the many names, the most prominent of them all happens to be Haruichi Furudate, the creator of Haikyuu!!

Obsessively detailed clash between two rival high school teams has done massive box office in Japan, but it won’t make much sense to the uninitiated
This is the second highest-grossing movie of the year in Japan, but unless you’re a teenager, an anime junkie or really, really care about volleyball, you’re unlikely to get much out of it. Storywise, it feels a little like walking into a play halfway through – which in effect you are, unless you’ve followed Haruichi Furudate’s huge-selling, long-running manga, from which this is adapted, and the 85 episodes of TV anime it’s already spawned. Even the title will be indecipherable to newcomers: “haikyuu” is Japanese for volleyball; the “dumpster battle” refers to our two rival high school teams and their urban-wildlife mascots, a crow and a cat.
With very little preamble we’re thrown straight into a high-stakes match between these...

Haruichi Furudate’s Haikyuu is regarded by many as the best sports manga in the world. The series has introduced the fun and thrill of volleyball along with moralities like teamwork, loyalty, hard work, confidence, and much more. And while the anime is still going on, the manga published its last chapter in July 2020.
Haikyuu Anime | Production I.G.
The ending of the series also features a volleyball match, which is no less than a battle featuring the star players of Haikyuu: Hinata Shoyo and Kageyama Tobio. While the ending was the perfect way to conclude the series, Furudate once revealed that the ending became a nightmare for him and his editors.
According to the mangaka, the ending was supposed to be an important moment for the series and for the creators, but the toll it took on them forced them to take a big rest instead of enjoying the final moments of Haikyuu.

The latest addition to Haruichi Furudate’s magnum opus, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle anime movie is soon going to hit theaters all over the world and hopefully break records just like it did during its initial release in Japan. Haikyu!! has a global audience, and it all started with the first line by the protagonist of the series, Hinata Shoyo.
Haikyu!! by Haruichi Furudate
In the first chapter, when Hinata Shoyo enters his first-ever volleyball match in the gymnasium, he talks about how much he loves the smell of air salonpas that is present in the entire gymnasium. For those who don’t know, air salonpas are painkiller sprays that athletes use to spray on a sprained injury.
Furudate, in one of his interviews, revealed that the first line of Hinata has a deeper meaning than fans realize. It has a direct connection to the excitement Hinata feels as he...

Haikyuu!! is a manga overflowing with optimism. Its protagonist, Hinata Shoyo, is one of the most irritatingly positive people you will ever encounter. Yet, the series’ author, Haruichi Furudate, is the exact opposite of his character.
Hinata in Haikyu!! | Crunchyroll
In sharp contrast to Hinata’s never-ending positivity, Furudate never once thought that anything good could happen. In a 2014 interview, the mangaka opened up about his feelings when Haikyuu!! was first selected for serialization.
Haruichi Furudate Admits His Fears During the Serialization of Haikyuu!!
When Haruichi Furudate received confirmation that his manga about volleyball would be serialized, he was far from happy; in fact, he felt devastated. Furudate admitted that he always wanted to work with a volleyball theme, so the only thing he ever thought about was completing the story without having it cut short.

Haikyuu focuses on Hinata Shoyo’s journey, as he overcomes all odds and gives a destructive reply to the people ridiculing him for his height by showcasing his breathtaking abilities. The series has a massive fanbase scattered around the globe.
