A feast for the eyeballs! That’s what the UK’s new TV drama (British shows returning for another series this year are here) output looks like for 2024 – a year of thrills, chills and laughs, from supernatural escapism to immersive historical dramas, true stories brought to life, and plenty to feed Britain’s crime mystery obsession.
Here’s a flavour of what 2024 holds for your TV: book adaptations include a new imagining of Ian Rankin’s Rebus detective stories coming to the BBC, a scandalous adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s iconic novel Rivals (starring David Tennant), Jack Thorne’s take on Lord of the Flies, and much much more.
There’s high-stakes action in thrillers like Red Eye, Black Doves and Nightsleeper, and you can transport yourself back in time to discover the lives of a notorious eighties jewel thief in Joan, sinister Jacobean power play in Mary and George,...

Cush Jumbo said that a second season of Criminal Record is in the works at Apple TV+.
Jumbo was a guest on Watch What Happens Live on Sunday night when host Andy Cohen asked if she knew anything about Criminal Record Season 2.
“There will be, yeah,” Jumbo confirmed.
Although Jumbo said a second season of the series was happening, Deadline hears that Apple TV+ has not renewed the show yet.
Jumbo plays Detective Sgt. June Lenker in the British crime thriller, which she also executive produces.
Criminal Record is a series created and written by Paul Rutman that stars Jumbo and Peter Capaldi in the leading roles. The series centers around two detectives — one a young woman in the early stages of her career, the other a well-connected man determined to protect his legacy — clashing over an old murder case. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Criminal Record finale “Carla.”] Apple TV+‘s latest crime thriller does wrap up its case in the finale, but given that nothing really seems to be limited anymore, we have to ask the question: Will there be a Criminal Record Season 2? “Quite honestly, we’ve been so consumed by making this series—we didn’t finish in post very long ago—and getting it out that we just haven’t really had those conversations. We just want everybody to love this season,” executive producer Elaine Collins told TV Insider. Added executive producer Paul Rutman, “Then we’ll see.” The finale sees the truth come out about the murder for which Errol Mathis (Tom Moutchi) has been serving time all these years. He didn’t kill his girlfriend, despite a statement her son Patrick gave to Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) that led to Errol’s confession. Rather, the murderer was ...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Criminal Record Episode 7 “The Sixty-Twos.”] It takes until the penultimate episode for Criminal Record to reveal the events of the night that Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) got that confession out of Errol Mathis (Tom Moutchi) for the murder of his girlfriend. But the events that lead to that are heartbreaking. It was “always” the plan to wait until now to show that, executive producer Elaine Collins tells TV Insider. “When we talked about creating the series and when we were storylining it, we decided right at the beginning, okay, we’re going to have a bubble episode. And it was always going to be the penultimate episode, wasn’t it?” Executive producer Paul Rutman confirms it was. “It felt like the right time. I think you go too soon, and you rob Hegarty of his mystery, and we want to keep the audience guessing about this character until the last ...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Criminal Record Episode 3 “Kid in the Park.”] How far will Hegarty (Peter Capaldi) go to keep Lenker (Cush Jumbo) from looking too closely in her investigation on Criminal Record? The latest episode very strongly hints at that answer. The Apple TV+ crime thriller follows the two detectives as she digs into a murder case from his past, one that could very well threaten the legacy he’s determined to protect. And while they’re investigating the drive-by shooting of a young boy, she’s not letting the other case go and also visits Errol (Tom Moutchi) in prison; he may or may not have committed the crime for which he was convicted. After Hegarty hears of Lenker being on the warpath, from the surveillance van, he sees the suspect approaching her from behind — and he’s armed. It’s not until it’s almost too late — and there’s someone else in the ...

It is certainly not the case that every lackluster show title reflects a lackluster show. For every tepid Suspicion there’s a zippy Hijack, for every drab Liaison a gorgeous Foundation — and that’s just on Apple TV+. But an uninspired name can feel, in retrospect, like an early warning sign.
So it is with the streamer’s Criminal Record, not to be confused with Criminal Minds or Criminal: UK or Law & Order: Criminal Intent. The thriller has its merits, chief among them Cush Jumbo and Peter Capaldi as a pair of rival cops. But a tendency to prioritize themes over characters, combined with languid pacing and a too-measured tone, ultimately results in too little payoff for the time it demands.
