[To help get you into the spooky spirit this October, the Daily Dead team thought it would be a great idea to spotlight some of our favorite witchcraft movies that just might cast a spell on you and make your Halloween season a "hexcellent" one!]
We were methodical trick-or-treaters. Every Halloween night, after hitting every house with a light on for what seemed like endless blocks of suburbia, my sister, cousin, and I would haul our plastic pumpkins into the living room of my parents' house and pour our sugar-coated contents onto the floor. It was there that the sorting—and eating—of each type of candy would begin, and it would always happen in the glow of whatever movie happened to be on TV that Halloween night. Sometimes it was a Friday the 13th film and other times it was Halloweentown. One year, it was The Witches, and let’s just say that it was a little harder to focus on organizing my Reese’s Cups on that All Hallows’ Eve.
Although considered to be a film that’s fun for the whole family, The Witches is wholesome entertainment with teeth—a big set...

Forced to live together in a confined space and depending on each other for survival, the Dollanganger siblings from 1987’s Flowers in the Attic have always reminded me of the kids from The Boxcar Children book series I grew up reading, although instead of solving mysteries on fun adventures, they were busy dealing with a scissors-wielding grandma, a murderous mother, and some intense incestual feelings—not exactly the type of material you’d find next to Gertrude Chandler Warner’s books in the library.
Published in 1979 and featuring evil parental figures, inter-family violence, and sibling incest, V.C. Andrews’ Flowers in the Attic was a sought-after page-turner for readers drawn to its controversial elements, and its viability in the bookstores paved its way to the cinemas in the mid-’80s. A story about four siblings—two brothers and two sisters—locked away in a gothic mansion’s upstairs room (and the...

If you grew up in the '80s or '90s and had a library card, I'm guessing you remember The Boxcar Children series of books. They followed orphaned siblings Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny, who lived in an abandoned train car they found in the woods before ultimately moving in with their rich grandfather, who moved the boxcar into his backyard.
Variety reports that Shout! Factory and a company called Legacy Classics are teaming up for three new animated movies based on the beloved books, and their ambitious plan is to release "at least four" new movies in the next two years. There are over 100 novels in the series (though only the first nineteen were written by original creator Gertrude Chandler Warner), so the producers will have plenty of material to mine for theatrical stories. There's no mention in the story of the 2014 animated movie adaptation, so one has...
