Anime is bigger than ever. With dedicated streaming services such as Crunchyroll enjoying a meteoric rise, rivals Netflix and Prime Video getting in on the action with their own dedicated selection, and even Disney – the arbiter of western animation – now boasting a growing number of exclusive anime series on Disney+, the availability and popularity of Japanese animation has never been greater.
Yet it's in film where anime has enjoyed the biggest boom, with the likes of Your Name and Miss Hokusai heralding a new era of excellence in animation, adding to a canon of definitive works such as Akira and My Neighbour Totoro. But with decades of brilliance to choose from, getting started on anime – or just choosing what to watch for movie night – can be daunting.

Mermaid fairy tales have enjoyed lasting popularity since Andersen's “The Little Sea Maid” and La Motte-Fouqué's “Undine”. Recent (unequal) reboots can further attest to this enduring appeal. Nothing surprising when considering the universality of these legendary creatures across civilizations and times. As for Japanese folklore, the Ningyo has gained a significant prominence not long ago through Miyazaki's “Ponyo” (2008). Just a decade later, the director of the celebrated “Mind Game” (2004), Masaaki Yuasa, developed his own rendition, this time in the form of a coming-of-age narrative.

The Animated World is a regular feature spotlighting animation from around the globe. The Boy and the Heron.“And what about you? What will you create? You take many things from the world, but I wonder what you will give back in return?”—Genzaburo Yoshino, How Do You Live? Part of the genius of Hayao Miyazaki is his ability to captivate his audience so deeply with his films that they don’t realize he is asking an essential question: how do you live? Yet, his films do. Each of them demands that we think, reflect, and change. Visually, they burst like a star in our mind’s eye while the stories slowly lead us toward realization. They warm our hearts while showing us how complex and contradictory people are—by turns selfish and selfless. From Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) to The Wind Rises (2013), Miyazaki’s stunning, hand-drawn aesthetic and stirring,...

Discovering the Magic of My Neighbor Totoro When we talk about the enchanting world of Hayao Miyazaki, it’s impossible not to mention the film that has charmed audiences globally – My Neighbor Totoro. This masterpiece is not just a film; it’s a warm, comforting embrace that reminds us of the innocence and wonder of childhood. The character Totoro himself has become an icon, a symbol of the gentle, whimsical nature that is so unique to Miyazaki’s storytelling. The impact of My Neighbor Totoro on popular culture is profound, with Totoro’s image gracing everything from t-shirts to coffee mugs, showing its...

Studio Ghibli, a scrappy Japanese animation studio that was founded in the ‘80s, would go on to become an industry powerhouse that surpasses Disney’s sense of fantasy, Pixar’s emotional catharsis, and the unabashed against-the-grain individualism of DreamWorks Animation. Hayao Miyazaki’s name is often synonymous with Studio Ghibli, the animation studio that he founded with fellow director Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki. Every Studio Ghibli film is special, but Hayao Miyazaki is an anime auteur whose cinematic offerings become pop culture events that redefine animation and storytelling.
Hayao Miyazaki is a renowned voice in traditional hand-drawn animation whose movies have record-breaking budgets and take over a decade to complete. And every time, they’re worth it. Miyazaki’s feature films may seem like playful escapism to outsiders, but recurring elements and themes define the quintessential Miyazaki experience. Miyazaki’s anime oeuvre may come across as intimidating and impenetrable to newcomers.

Hayao Miyazaki just won't stop. The animation maestro has retired then unretired so many times it is just silly now, with his latest movie "The Boy and the Heron" being released in Japan with no trailers and being billed as his last goodbye — until it was revealed he was already throwing around ideas for his next project. "He's thinking about this next project every day, and I can't stop him -- in fact, I've given up," studio co-founder and long-time producer Toshio Suzuki recently said in an interview with French outlet Liberation.
But while the idea of more Miyazaki is exciting, what's somewhat troubling is the future Studio Ghibli is headed toward. After all, this is the greatest animation studio in the world, responsible for all-time classics like "Kiki's Delivery Service" (which ended up on our list of 100 best movies ever) and "Princess Kaguya," and which gifted us Totoro and tanuki testicle transformations.

How does someone follow one of the greatest and most profoundly summative farewells the movies have ever seen? By definition, they don’t. They retire, or they die. Or they retire and then they die. In some rare cases, it even seems like they die because they retired.
And then there’s 82-year-old filmmaker and Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, always in a category of his own, who’s formally or informally quit the business no fewer than seven times of the course of his illustrious career, most recently after the 2013 release of his magnum opus “The Wind Rises.” A fictionalized biopic about aeronautical engineer Jiro Horikoshi, whose most visionary designs were built with forced Korean labor and deployed at the wasteful mercy of Japan’s World War II campaign,...

"Barbenheimer" is the cinematic event of the summer. Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" and Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" are highly anticipated films by two acclaimed directors that could not be more different. One is a deep, subversive exploration of an iconic figure in American history, whose complicated legacy is filled with controversy. The other is a movie about J. Robert Oppenheimer.
What makes this particular case of counterprogramming so unique and fun is that, beyond the tone of both movies, their subject matters themselves are polar opposites. "Oppenheimer" deals with one of the darkest chapters in human history and recreates a nuclear explosion, and "Barbie," well, is a pink-colored party with Ryan Gosling continuing to prove he belongs in comedies. That's what separates this from other competing summer blockbusters like "The Dark Knight" and "Mamma Mia," but it is not the first time a gripping drama about WWII is released on...

It was announced that Studio Ghibli’s longtime North American distribution partner Gkids would once again distribute a film. This time, it will be Miyazaki’s final film, which will receive the English title “The Boy and The Heron.” Little is known about the film, as no images, trailers, synopses, advertisements, or other information about the film were made available to the public prior to its release in theaters in Japan. The film was just released in Japanese theaters over the weekend, so leaks and details may start to appear online in preparation for the film’s launch in North America. Hayao Miyazaki’s 1988 animated feature “My Neighbor Totoro” features an iconic moment in which two small children and a rotund, furry sprite creature (the titular Totoro) wait for a bus to arrive. Should you find yourself waiting for a bus in Japan this July, when Miyazaki’s next film comes out, there’s one thing you should not expect to see at the stop: outdoor promo for his next and final movie.
In a recent interview, the 82-year-old legend and co-founder of Studio Ghibli said there would be none of the typical promotion for his next picture, “How Do You Live?”
“No trailers or TV commercials at all … no newspaper ads either.” He added: “Deep down, I think this is what moviegoers latently desire.”

Prepare to check your calendar approximately 159 times in the next few minutes, because this breaking news will definitely sound like an elaborate and very cruel April Fool's joke. Are you ready? You might want to sit down, because it's a big one, bigger than that cruel live-action "The Legend of Zelda" trailer IGN did years ago. Studio Ghibli, yes, the Studio Ghibli behind such classics as, well, almost everything they've ever done, has just announced some sort of partnership with Lucasfilm — you know, the company behind your favorite childhood memories.
This is one of the most unexpected partnerships since Sony and Disney decided to collaborate on bringing Spider-Man to the MCU, one of the weirdest announcements since an animated movie about Lego was first announced. This is especially strange since Lucasfilm is owned by Disney, a company with a long and very ugly history with Ghibli. After all, Disney managed...

Soon to celebrate his 82nd birthday, Hayao Miyazaki came out of “retirement” yet again to work on his latest animation for Studio Ghibli. The project, titled Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka (which translates to How Do You Live?), follows a 15-year-old boy named Koperu and his uncle, who move to a new neighborhood, as the kid deals with bullying, poverty, education, work, courage, and progress. With the last major update three years ago––wherein a 2023 release was in the cards––we now have a new update and it looks like production is on track to wrap up soon.

The stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli animator Hayao Miyazaki’s classic 1988 film My Neighbour Totoro, officially opening Tuesday night at London’s Barbican Theater, has attracted immense interest from the international theater community. Famed Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi has partnered with the U.K.’s Royal Shakespeare Company to create a stage version of Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki’s 1988 hand-drawn classic My Neighbour Totoro, a beloved film that follows the adventures of two young sisters who move from Tokyo city to the countryside.
Set in 1950s Japan, the film introduces us to Satsuki and Mei who move with their father to their new home, near a forest. Left to their own devices, they discover spirits and magical creatures; two furry ones are of particular interest — a giant fluffy creature known as the Totoro, and a mammoth cat bus that takes on passengers then soars off into the sky.
Hisaishi will executive produce the show with the RSC in partnership with Studio Ghibli, where Miyazaki creates his films, in collaboration with UK theater company Improbable and Nippon TV.

“My Neighbor Totoro” and its titular character are among the most iconic releases by Studio Ghibli, with the fame and the status of both growing significantly through the years, in a tendency that still continues. In that fashion, while the film only grossed $6.1 million at the box office, it went to gross approximately $266 million from home video sales and at least $1.142 billion from licensed merchandise sales, adding up to at least $1.414 billion in total revenue, as of 2018.

It’s been 10 years since Enrico Casarosa was nominated for an Oscar for his debut short film with Pixar, “La Luna.” Now, his debut feature, “Luca,” is about to hit Disney+, and his film is solid proof that the venerated animation studio has changed enormously in the last decade.
Casarosa is just one of the new faces at Pixar stepping up from shorts to features with not just original ideas, but also deeply personal stories that break from the more high-concept films that have made the studio iconic. Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s “The Friend,” , starts with its most cogent and powerful scene. Dane — a kind, soft, Totoro of a man played by the always sincere Jason Segel — sits on the porch of a midwestern home and plays a game with two young girls. Inside the house, their parents use the calculated moment of calm to strategize. Matthew Teague (Casey Affleck) sits alone in the frame, stares into the middle distance, and games out how to tell his daughters that their mother is dying.

Don’t say “mom’s going on a trip.” When Matthew leaves to get everyone, Cowperthwaite cuts to the cancer-stricken Nicole (Dakota Johnson). The camera lingers on her for what feels like an eternity; a tender irony for someone who’s about to tell her kids...

What’s the one item you always take with you to Berlin?
I never go anywhere without my Totoro plush hand puppet. This started many years ago when my daughter was little and she insisted I bring Totoro with me on trips, so I wouldn’t be lonely. Over time he’s become my travel mascot. I’ll be bringing him to Berlin. It’ll be his first time.
Your favorite thing about Berlin?
It’s all about being in a great European city so steeped in history and culture. Berlin has the extra je ne sais quoi because of the history with the...
