The Spiderwick Chronicles‘ first season debuted on Roku this past Friday and, as part of the show’s press junket, I recently got to sit down and chat with three of the show’s stars. Lyon Daniels, previously known for the Netflix film We Can Be Heroes, who plays main character Jared Grace, Noah Cottrell, whose past works include the 2021 Punky Brewster reboot and the Dwayne Johnson film Skyscraper, who plays Jared’s twin brother Simon, and Mychala Lee, who previously starred in shows like 9-1-1: Lone Star and the Apple TV+ original Truth Be Told, who plays the twins’ older sister, Mallory.

In 2003, Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black introduced the world to the Grace family. After they move into the Spiderwick Estate, things get fantastical for twins Simon and Jared, as well as older sister Mallory. It was only the beginning of this magical story. With the books and a feature film release in 2008, the stories are back. After originally being produced for Disney Plus, The Spiderwick Chronicles series has found a home this weekend on Roku. Showrunner Aron Eli Coleite looked to expand on the world, with the help of its creators. And the impressive cast led by Christian Slater and Joy Bryant, are all in on the fantasy.
Recently, we had the great joy of speaking with the fine folks that brought Spiderwick to life. First up, we sat down with Diterlizzi and Black. The authors discussed the excitement of expanding the world they created. During the conversation, Mr. Diterlizzi...

Christian Slater currently stars in Roku’s The Spiderwick Chronicles as Mulgarath, an extremely powerful ogre who can shape-shift into any form he wants, whether human or animal. The actor recently revealed that he had no idea about the creator’s inspiration behind the character, but it turned out to be something that he loved for years.

The Spiderwick Chronicles has once again returned to the screens to remind fans of the mesmerizing story of the twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace and the magical Spiderwick Estate. However, this time, the storyline has been helmed a bit differently to make it all the more interesting and exciting in the eight-episode miniseries from the mastermind creator, Aron Eli Coleite.
The Spiderwick Chronicles (2024).
Yet, even with the twists and turns setting all the more intriguing climacterics for the story, this series wanted to repeat one key element from the original film as well: Have one actor play the role of the twins just like the 2008 masterpiece did. But things had to unfold differently this time for the casting process, and the showrunner felt it all eventually turned out to be a win-win situation for them.

The Spiderwick Chronicles dropped on The Roku Channel on Friday and the reviews have been mixed, at best. The series, based on Holly Black and Tony Diterlizzi’s novels of the same name, did not live up to the magic of the original source material. Critics generally found that the series tried telling a modernized version of the story but failed to execute the integral fantasy element. Some fans accuse the series of going too woke, without consideration for the myth and the magic.

Magic is all around in the world of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Most of it is hidden away from the eyes of humans, tucked into obscure corners or shielded from human eyes by glamours. Still, those with hearts and minds open enough to see what’s in front of them — like our 15-year-old hero Jared (Lyon Daniels) — might find in the sleepy town of Henson, Michigan, a veritable haven of otherworldly life. Unicorns frolic in a glen. Sprites flutter alongside fireflies at dusk. Just outside the doors of a nondescript grocery, a goblin market trades in mythical weapons and pumpkin spice lattes.
But if such extraordinary sights are everywhere, the sense of wonder that ought to accompany them proves to be in disappointingly short supply. Even as The Spiderwick Chronicles‘ head drifts into the clouds, powered by fantasies of faeries and ogres and witches and dragons, the Roku Channel adventure is...

Fans of children’s literature as well as children, will probably have heard of The Spiderwick Chronicles series, written by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black. The series follows the adventures of the Grace children, the twins Simon and Jared, and their older sister Mallory after they move into the Spiderwick Estate and discover a mysterious fantasy world they had not known about. The main series consists of five books, with three additional books that form the Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles series.
The book series was first adapted into movie format in 2008, when The Spiderwick Chronicles was released, receiving generally positive reviews but that was it at the time. The official trailer for Roku’s The Spiderwick Chronicles shows off much more of the series’ fantasy world and of Christian Slater as an ogre who would prefer a world without humans. The two-minute trailer also introduces the Grace family and how moving into the Spiderwick Estate opens up their eyes to the existence of mythical creatures.
In addition to Christian Slater as Mulgarath, season one stars Joy Bryant as Helen Grace, Noah Cottrell as Simon Grace, Lyon Daniels as Jared Grace, and Mychala Lee as Mallory Grace. Jack Dylan Grazer provides the voice of Thimbletack.
“The Grace family moves from Brooklyn, New York, to their ancestral home in Henson, Michigan, the Spiderwick Estate. The Spiderwick Chronicles has found a new home at Roku. The TV series adaptation of the fantasy adventure novels by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black was originally ordered for Disney+, but the streaming service pulled the plug earlier this year, despite the fact that shooting had already been completed.
Roku announced today that they have acquired the exclusive, premiere U.S. rights to The Spiderwick Chronicles, which will debut on The Roku Channel in early 2024. The series follows “the coming-of-age story of the Grace Family, as they move from New York to Michigan and into their family’s ancestral home. Upon arrival, the family not only uncovers mysteries hidden inside their great grandfather’s Spiderwick Estate, but also discovers a secret, fantastical world around them.“

Roku has moved in and saved The Spiderwick Chronicles starring Christian Slater and Joy Bryant and based on Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black’s popular book series. In August 2023, Disney+ dropped The Spiderwick Chronicles after the eight-episode season had wrapped filming.
The cancellation prompted Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television to shop the series elsewhere, with Roku snatching up the U.S. rights. Fans of the bestselling books can now expect an early 2024 premiere on The Roku Channel.
“It is an honor to bring The Spiderwick Chronicles, a spectacular adventure-filled story led by the incredible Christian Slater and Joy Bryant, exclusively to The Roku Channel,” stated Brian Tannenbaum, Head of Originals, Roku Media. “We cannot wait to introduce this exquisitely crafted series, imagined by a world-class creative team, to millions of streamers.”

One streaming service's trash is another's treasure. To that end, Roku has announced that it has nabbed the rights to "The Spiderwick Chronicles" TV series, which had previously been in the works at Disney+. And when we say in the works, we mean that the entire eight-episode series had already been filmed. Yet, Disney decided not to release it anyhow, as we learned back in August. But the show will see the light of day after all.
The adaptation of the acclaimed book series by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black will now be a Roku Original series that will debut on The Roku Channel in early 2024. No specific release date has been announced yet but expect more information, including a trailer, sooner rather than later. It's easy to see why Disney would have pursued this in the first place as the YA fantasy adventure novels are quite popular, with 20 million copies sold.

Roku just scored a completed, anticipated adaptation of a beloved book series that will air in early 2024. The streaming platform announced on Tuesday that it has acquired “The Spiderwick Chronicles” nearly two months after the show was dropped by Disney+ as part of a cost-saving measure.
Based on the book series of the same name by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black, “The Spiderwick Chronicles” follows the coming-of-age story of the Grace Family, as they move from New York to Michigan and into their family’s ancestral home. Upon arrival, the family not only uncovers mysteries hidden inside their great grandfather’s Spiderwick Estate, but also discovers a secret, fantastical world around them.
The eight-episode first season was produced by Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television to initially stream on Disney+, but the streamer decided not to move forward with its plans after the first season was completed. And their loss is Roku’s gain.

It's always difficult hearing a show that's been completed isn't airing at its original home.
There was a lot of excitement about The Spiderwick Chronicles when Disney+ ordered the series.
You can only imagine our surprise when it emerged that the streaming service had scrapped the project after shooting an entire season.
The decision to nix the show came as Disney+, like many other streaming services, examined its content slate with the eye of cutting costs.
That led to several shows that had already premiered, including Willow, being banished from the service entirely.
While many projects haven't found new homes, we're happy to report that there is a future for The Spiderwick Chronicles.
Roku has stepped in to pick up the completed episodes to air in the U.S. at some point in 2024.

The spend-spend-spend era of the streaming wars is over, and we've now landed squarely in the cut-cut-cut era. From Warner Bros. Discovery scrapping "Batgirl" after filming was already completed to Disney removing "Willow" from Disney+ less than six months after its release, entertainment giants are scrambling to trim costs and write down assets anywhere they can.
The latest casualty of this trend is "The Spiderwick Chronicles," an eight-episode TV adaptation of the fantasy novel series by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black, which was previously adapted into a 2008 movie starring Freddie Highmore (seen above). The TV series stars "It" and "Shazam!" breakout Jack Dylan Grazer as a brownie called Thimbletack, alongside Lyon Daniels, Noah Cottrell, Joy Bryant, and Mychala Lee. Christian Slater plays the villain, an ogre called Mulgarath, and Aron Eli Coleite ("Locke and Key") is the showrunner. Well, this is a bummer.
Disney+ has pulled the plug on its TV adaptation of the Spiderwick Chronicles.
Deadline shared the unfortunate news over the weekend, revealing that all eight episodes had been completed prior to the decision.
That means the show will become like the countless projects scrapped by streaming networks this year, including the Batgirl movie.
The move comes as Disney+ reevaluates its streaming strategy, and Deadline revealed that the series is part of the content write-off announced in May.
Disney+ recently purged countless original series and movies from its platform, including the Willow sequel series.
“We are in the process of reviewing the content on our Dtc services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation,” Disney CFO Christine McCarthy said at the time.
