Elle Fanning is opening up about Hulu’s cancellation of The Great and imagining what her character would be doing next.
The streamer axed the Tony McNamara-created series after three seasons. News of the cancellation came in the middle of the SAG-AFTRA strike which kept actors from sharing their thoughts. With the actors back in business, Fanning is now sharing her thoughts on social media.
“Scrolling down memory lane… I haven’t been able to properly share my thoughts after the news of The Great’s cancellation. This show has meant the world to me,” Fanning said on Instagram. “The experiences shared. The memories I’ll never forget. Tony McNamara is a certified genius. The last 3 seasons have shaped me. Through playing Catherine I discovered parts of myself I didn’t know I had. I love every crew member and cast member deeply.”

Hulu has canceled the Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult comedy The Great after three seasons.
The sad news was first reported by Deadline.
Created, written, and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great followed Catherine The Great's story as "an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter," according to the official description.
"Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change."
"All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside."

No Huzzahs will be had today. In something of a surprise, Hulu has canceled “The Great,” the period comedy series from creator Tony McNamara that starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, IndieWire has confirmed.
The series will end after airing three seasons, with the most recent season dropping back on May 12. The show is nominated for an Emmy this year after landing acting nominations for both Fanning and Hoult in its standout second season. It’s been nominated for seven Emmys in all. The show had also been nominated for several Golden Globes, Film Independent Spirit Awards, WGA and SAG Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.
Hulu had no comment.
It’s unclear whether the show’s cancellation is related to the ongoing writers and actors strike, which has resulted in several shows being un-renewed of late, or other factors.

Hulu has canceled its period dramedy The Great after three seasons.
The news comes some three-and-a-half months after the show’s third (and now final) season premiered as a binge release in May. The series stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and explores the relationship of Russian Empress Catherine II and Emperor Peter III in the 18th century.
The show earned seven Emmy nominations over the course of its run, winning the award for outstanding period costumes last year. Fanning and Hoult also earned acting nominations in 2022, and series creator Tony McNamara and director Matt Shakman scored writing and directing nods for the series’ premiere episode in 2020.
The Great was also a critical favorite, earning nearly universally positive reviews across all three of its seasons. How many people watched it, however, remains a mystery as Hulu (like most other streamers) doesn’t share much viewing data and season three did...

“The Great” will not return for a fourth season at Hulu. The streaming service canceled the period drama after three critically acclaimed seasons.
The series was created, written and executive produced by “The Favourite” screenwriter Tony McNamara, and it starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult in a kooky tale about the life of Russian empress Catherine the Great.
The third season, which dropped all episodes on May 12, followed Catherine (Fanning) and her husband Peter (Hoult) as they worked on their relationship following her staged coup to take control of Russia. Thankfully, the Season 3 finale provided some closure to Catherine’s story, as it featured her growing into her role as leader while grieving a major loss.
The reasons for the cancellation are unclear, given the show’s garnered strong fan response as well as seven Emmy nominations since debuting in 2020. The drama won the Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in...

Exclusive: Ok, this one hurts. Hulu has canceled fan favorite The Great after three seasons.
The series starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great reinvented the period drama by revisiting the life of Catherine the Great, Russia’s reigning empress from 1762 to 1796. It depicted an iconic character and her place in history through a unique prism.
The third season dropped May 12 and revolved around Catherine (Fanning) and Nicholas (Hoult) working on their marriage.
It’s unclear what made the streamer decide to cancel the comedy, which garnered positive reviews and seven Emmy nominations since launching in 2020. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in 2022, the same year that Fanning and Hoult earned their first nominations for headlining the popular series. It certainly isn’t true to how history really happened, but “The Great” is one of the most inventive, entertaining series out there right now. Billed by Hulu alternately as “an occasionally true story” and “an almost entirely untrue story,” it takes the real-life relationship between Catherine the Great and Peter III and twists it into something that makes for maddeningly watchable comedy and drama. Season 3 begins with a new reality for Catherine and Peter as they examine how their marriage can work with the empress in power and Russia’s former leader by her side, and things only get wilder and more chaotic from there.
“The Great” has not received the warmest reception from Emmy voters, with six nominations total and just one win over the course of its first two seasons. The pilot episode was cited for directing and writing, and Season 1 merited a production design mention. Lead...

“The Great” Season 3 contains some titanic shifts of character — and actors — so even though AP European History has already spoiled the broad strokes of the Hulu series, spoilers ahead.
Catherine (Elle Fanning) grieves in the last five episodes of the season, leading to an eventual, equally tragic and thrilling transformation that brings her closer to becoming a great ruler with a capital-g, capital-r. But underneath the ice — metaphorically speaking, not the literal ice-covered lake into which Peter (Nicholas Hoult) falls and drowns — showrunner Tony McNamara and casting director Dixie Chassay and her team did a lot to make sure the show always felt full even with Peter gone.
Some of this happens by keeping Hoult around, playing Peter’s double Pugachev, who rabble-rouses at the behest of Archie (Adam Godley) and then starts liking all this arousal a little too much. The show also makes strategic additions to the regulars of Catherine’s court.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Great” Season 3, including the ending.]
Peter III did not live to be 295 years old, so he was going to have die at some point. The history books are murky on what actually led to the Russian emperor’s death in 1762. The version in “The Great” Season 3 is slightly more definitive, but like so much on that Hulu show, it’s more about perception than anything else. In a spring when surprise exits for central characters has led to many discussions about what shows do about what comes after, “The Great” has become a fascinating addition to the collection. How it bid adieu and what came next in the episodes that followed all speak to the strengths of a show that shouldn’t be flying under the radar.

Catherine and Peter attempt to figure out a way to move forward after the events of season two in the trailer for Hulu’s The Great season three. Can Catherine actually put into effect changes that will improve the lives of the peasants? Will Catherine and Peter ever be able to trust each other? “The Great” was one of the biggest question marks going into Emmy season, with many uncertain how the series would perform and the number of nominations it would get, if any. That was particularly the case with one of the leads, Nicholas Hoult, who plays Peter III of Russia/Yemelyan Pugachev in the second season. He received a Golden Globe and Critics Choice nomination this year but missed out at the SAG Awards despite getting in last year for the first season. But Hoult did manage to make it into the Emmy lineup for Best Comedy Actor, earning his first-ever nomination. The actor is one of four bids for the Hulu comedy, the others being lead actress (Elle Fanning), production design and period costumes.

Phoebe Fox‘s Marial is a highlight of The Great. The irreverent period comedy tells the (sometimes) true story of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning), and in Season 2, the Empress finally unseats her husband, Peter (Nicholas Hoult), as ruler of Russia. Post-coup, Marial’s life is on the up and up. At long last, she gets reinstated as a Lady, she finds an unexpected romance with Grigor, and she’s part of the small group of Catherine’s confidants who help run Russia. Marial has never had more power, but her life isn’t devoid of struggles. To keep her position and secure her safety, Marial must help codify Catherine’s power. But the friends reach an impasse when it comes to Catherine and Peter’s relationship. Be it strategy or foolish brashness, Marial tells Catherine that Peter slept with her mother (Gillian Anderson), which led to her death. And in a shocking finale twist,...

They almost certainly won’t win. They aren’t even on too many Emmys short lists to be nominated. But there are two shows eligible for Outstanding Comedy Series this year that — at least in this humble TV watcher’s opinion — really do deserve some sort of prize.
A James Beard Award for one of them, perhaps? And maybe the Order of Lenin for the other?
The first is “Julia,” HBO Max’s delicious comedy-drama following the life and career of cooking icon Julia Child, the grand dame of PBS who for 10 years, from 1963 to 1973, taught America how to sauté. Child has been played by some heavyweights in the past — Meryl Streep in 2009’s “Julia and Julia” and, of course, Dan Aykroyd in his famous 1978 “SNL” skit — but never before with the heart and soul, not to mention vocal alacrity, that veteran English actress Sarah Lancashire brings to the role.

“We also all knew one another better, which is always an advantage, because it means you’re straight in with the shorthand and you can be playful,” declares casting director Dixie Chassay about the energy that permeated production on the second season of “The Great.” It allowed cast and crew to push the envelope and take more risks. For our recent webchat she adds, “We knew what this thing was, and although we didn’t know where it could journey to, it felt very alive, it felt like it had been given a really good strong base,” she explains. “The response was excellent and therefore we could really play around.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“The concern as an editor is making sure your audience understands what’s happening at all times,” declares editor Anthony Boys about his top priority on the second season of “The Great.” For our recent webchat he adds, “This show’s all about what’s not being said. “We all collaborated so well in season 1, but when we came into season 2, we knew what the world was, we’d set the tone and then we could push it even further, because we knew it worked,” makeup and hair supervisor Louise Coles declares says about upping the ante when bringing the second season of “The Great” to life. “There is so much scope to create something completely unique, which is great with period drama because often you’re locked into the period,” she explains. “We ground ourselves in the history but we’re able to tear away at that and come up with something different, so I think we all push that tone even further.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

We have some good news for fans of two of Hulu's best comedy series.
The streamer has officially picked up a third season of The Great.
Ten new episodes have been ordered.
In season two of The Great, Catherine (Elle Fanning) finally takes the Russian throne for her own - but if she thought coup-ing her husband was difficult, it's nothing compared to the realities of 'liberating' a country that doesn't want to be.
She'll battle her court, her team, even her own mother in a bid to bring the enlightenment to Russia.
With only occasional historical facts, the series stars Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.
The Great is created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara and executive produced by Marian Macgowan, Mark Winemaker, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Echo Lake's Brittany Kahan Ward,...

Just one month after debuting its sophomore season to rave reviews, Hulu’s “The Great” has shared with Gold Derby the names of the 12 cast members who are eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. It's the subtle details that make the greatest difference. In the sophomore season of Hulu's The Great, power is changing hands as a very pregnant Catherine, portrayed by Elle Fanning, is establishing her reign over Russia. As a result, people are rising and falling in rank, with Sacha Dhawan's Orlo and Phoebe Fox's Marial taking on a higher status because of their alliance with Catherine. In the process, their drab clothing from season one has been thrown out like yesterday's trash and replaced with apparel more fitting of a noble. And though clothing may seem inconsequential to the average viewer, Dhawan and Fox said that costume designer Sharon...

A year and a half after its huzzah-filled first season, Hulu’s history-spoofing, Russian royalty satire “The Great” has returned for its sophomore run. Elle Fanning stars at the title’s Catherine the Great, who at the end of the first season has initiated a coup against her misogynistic and vulgar husband Peter, played by Nicholas Hoult. Her success is complicated by her pregnancy with their child, though, and the second season finds them navigating their new power imbalance. All 10 episodes of the second season of “The Great” began streaming on Nov. 19.
After earning a pair of Emmy nominations for its first season, including one for series creator and writer Tony McNamara, “The Great” returns to, well, great reviews from critics. It currently has a Metacritic score of 84, which indicates “universal acclaim.” On Rotten Tomatoes, “The Great” season 2 reviews are raves and it merits a 100% fresh score.

No one in “The Great” is living a particularly healthy life, and that’s only partially due to the fact that this loose version of Russian history fixes its gaze on the 18th century. Empress Catherine (Elle Fanning), her recently deposed husband Peter (Nicholas Hoult), and the assembled imperial court are all teeming with such self-destructive tendencies that it’s difficult for them to sort out their own lives, much less the country they ostensibly rule.
The show’s Season 2, now available on Hulu, has an even more claustrophobic feel than its first. That’s not nothing considering the series starts with Catherine plopped in a strange new aristocratic ecosystem where she’s brought to be little more than a breeder of heirs. But following a successful coup against Peter initiated in the waning moments of the first season’s finale, Catherine has taken her place at the top of the Russian food chain.

On Friday, the creators and stars of The Great stopped by TCA to tease the second season of their acclaimed Hulu comedy, which is set to premiere on November 19.
Creator, writer and EP Tony McNamara, EP Marian Macgowan, and EP-actor Nicholas Hoult were joined on the panel by EP-actor Elle Fanning, who touched on a “parental theme” running through the season, with regard to her character, Catherine the Great.
“Catherine [is] grappling with the fact that she’s going to become a mother soon,” said Fanning. “The baby is also kind of her protection because she knows while [he’s] in there she’s safe, and Peter’s not going to kill her.”
Hoult noted that for at least part of Season 2, his character Peter III is “in imprisonment and confinement.” The overthrown Russian Emperor will deal with the situation by “trying to better himself,” attempting to learn the French language, among other new skills.

There is an Afro-futuristic and 1990s-inspired dance floor, as the students of the fictional Winchester University look back on their time on campus amid their final year.
