On October 19, 2023, the first episodes of the sci-fi animated series Scavengers Reign by directors Joe Bennett and Charles Huettner premiered on Max.
The project grew from the short film Scavengers into a full-blown animated series about the crashed crew of a cargo ship. On a breathtakingly beautiful and carnivorous planet, the characters are forced to adapt to life alongside merciless parasitic organisms.
The great beauty of Scavengers Reign is that under the guise of a survival story, Bennett and Huettner offer an entire world structured like an unpredictable machine. The planet lives a life of its own – so enchanting and eerie that you can watch it endlessly.
The animated series is an unusual and exciting experience. With a minimum of dialogue, it asks a maximum of questions.

Fans of science fiction have simultaneously seen something similar to Max’s new adult animated series Scavengers Reign and absolutely nothing like it before.
It’s a dichotomy that the show’s creative team leaned into when trying to create a world that houses a group of surviving crewmembers from the Demeter, a deep-space freighter ship damaged by a solar flare and stranded on a beautiful but terrifying planet. Separated and unaware the others have survived, each group — and in some cases a single individual — attempts to navigate and survive the hostile planet in hopes of eventual rescue.
Co-created by Joe Bennett and Charles Huettner, the series, based on their 2016 short Scavengers, has been adapted into a 12-episode series by Green Street Pictures. It’s one of the latest examples of how networks and platforms are not only increasingly interested in animated titles that expand genre representation, but ones that have clear live-action impulses,...

Blumhouse, Futurama, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Archer, Shining Vale, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and a new Goosebumps series are among the panels, screenings and exclusive first looks set for this year’s New York Comic Con.
On Thursday, ReedPop announced its initial programming slate for the 2023 edition of the annual pop culture convention, taking place at the Javits Center Oct. 12-15. It’s the first major schedule announcement for the fall con, which, like its convention predecessors this year, is navigating the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes against the AMPTP that limits talents ability to promote their work.
TV and film programming includes a Thursday Empire Stage panel dedicated exclusively to Blumhouse, with producer Jason Blum sharing exclusive details about Five Nights at Freddys, Night Swim and Totally Killer. Adult Swim has ordered half-hour comedy series Common Side Effects, from director-writer Joe Bennett and Steve Hely and executive produced by King of the Hill creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels. The series, announced Friday at Annecy International Film Festival, “delves into the complex reactions to the revelations of the mysterious elixir of life”.
Created by Bennett and Hely, Common Side Effects follows former high school lab partners Marshall and Frances who begin to unravel a conspiracy involving big pharma and the federal government to suppress knowledge of a rare mushroom that may hold the key to curing all the world’s diseases.
“Tonally, this is like nothing else in animation right now, so we knew immediately that Common Side Effects belonged on Adult Swim,” said Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, Cartoon Network and Boomerang. “Mike, Greg and this entire team have such...
