Were you hoping to see more Alaska crime-solving from True Detective’s Danvers and Navarro next season? Sorry, but you’re left out in the cold.
The upcoming fifth season of HBO’s crime drama anthology will feature “different characters,” a “different setting” and a “different story” than Season 4’s Night Country, showrunner Issa López confirms to our sister site Variety. That fits with True Detective’s pattern of refreshing its cast and setting each season, but some fans were hoping to see more of Danvers and Navarro, since López served as showrunner last season as well.

Attention: The Following Report Is A Rumor. Please Take The Following Story With A Grain Of Salt.
Ever since it was originally announced in 2019, the MCU’s interpretation of the half-human, half-vampire monster hunter Blade has been in production hell. The character, once made popular by the 1998 film, portrayed by Wesley Snipes, has since had a revolving door of creatives and multiple pushbacks in terms of getting the project off the ground.
Bassam Tariq was originally set to direct, with Stacy Amma Osei-Kuffour writing the script, but Tariq left in early 2022 following creative differences. Yann Demange took over directing duties, while Michael Starrbury was brought on to rewrite the script. Later, both Nic Pizzolatto and Michael Green did additional rewrites.
One of the biggest rumors regarding the troubled production is the continued issues with the script. At one point, the film was said to primarily focus on female characters, with...

While HBO’s True Detective has till date amassed 4 successful seasons, it was its first iteration, released way back in January 2014, that initially thrust it into the mainstream. Starring Matthew McConaughey as Detective Rustin Cohle and Woody Harrelson as Detective Martin Hart, the dynamics between the two were one of the most obvious things that impressed fans.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in True Detective | HBO
Still, McConaughey’s role, in particular, was the obvious highlight of Season 1, that of a troubled yet astounding detective who cannot help but concern his partner with his philosophical ramblings. The Wolf of Wall Street star in itself was the creator Nic Pizzolatto’s first choice for the role, although he had to jump through a considerable number of hoops in order to make this happen.
This included rejecting a number of actors that the studio suggested, and coming up with a creative strategy to get his man.

HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country” is the most haunting and eerie season of “True Detective” yet, a result of showrunner and director Issa López‘s willingness to explore harrowing questions and her ability to find the precise visual corollaries for her characters’ isolated, traumatized inner states. Although “Night Country” shares DNA with Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Joji Fununaga’s first season in its core idea — which López described to IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast as “the sense that something very rotten is coming to the surface” — López was determined to approach the series’ pitiless tone in a fresh way.
So instead of making the series hot and masculine like the first season’s Louisiana-set story of two male police detectives, López went cold and feminine, following cops Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as they try to solve a mystery in arctic Alaska. Marvel has a slew of upcoming projects slated for release in the coming years, many of which have been stalled due to the unprecedented SAG-AFTRA strike that halted the entire industry, resulting in numerous delays and cancellations.
One highly anticipated Marvel Studios project, ‘Blade,’ faced challenges long before the strikes began. It’s an MCU film centered around Eric Brooks, the iconic vampire hunter from comics, serving as a reboot of the beloved ‘Blade’ trilogy that played a pivotal role in shaping the MCU as we know it today.
The production of ‘Blade’ has encountered multiple rewrites and delays, stretching out the timeline considerably from its originally planned 2023 release. There are even reports suggesting that the main actor is reconsidering their role. With no official trailer in sight, Teaser Pro has released a concept trailer for the film, demonstrating that a straightforward formula of Blade battling vampires remains effective. You...

Marvel has plenty of projects bound to be released in the next few years, and we know that most of these projects have been stuck in a sort of limbo due to the historic SAG-AFTRA strike that paralyzed the whole industry as a whole, causing plenty of projects to be both delayed or altogether canceled.
One extremely anticipated Marvel Studios project that had problems way before the strikes began is ‘Blade.’ It is an McU-based movie following Eric Brooks, the most notable vampire hunter in comics, and a reboot of the already highly popular ‘Blade’ trilogy that contributed to paving the way for the MCU that we know today.
We know that ‘Blade’ production has faced numerous rewrites and delays, and for a movie that was supposed to be released back in 2023, it sure is taking a really long time, with even the main actor, according to some reports, reconsidering his role.

Night Country was doomed to be compared to previous seasons created by Nic Pizzolatto, and it failed that test miserably, with showrunner Issa Lopez deciding to tease viewers that everything that happened was connected to the events of the first season. Unfortunately, in the end, this turned out to be blatant deception and pure fan service in the worst sense of the word.
For some reason, we see the ghost of Rust Cohle's father, but this false evidence leads nowhere; at the same time, Lopez quotes the famous line about time as a flat circle in the final episode. Unfortunately, the fourth season has few merits, except for the spectacular setting and Jodie Foster's acting.
The bold gender revision only masks a complete lack of original ideas, and Navarro and Danvers seem too similar to McConaughey and Harrelson's characters, even in their story arcs.

Showrunner writer/director Issa López took over creative duties on HBO‘s acclaimed whodunnit thriller series “True Detective” from Nic Pizzolatto a few years back, and the results, a fourth season titled “True Detective: Night Country” were terrific (read our review). In spite of Pizzolato’s bitter sniping at the series—he spent a good amount of time throwing shade online at the series— ‘Night Country’ became the most viewed season of the series since the first installment and one of the most critically acclaimed tooo.

HBO’s “True Detective” has returned with a roaring fourth season starring two-time Oscar-winner Jodie Foster. Officially titled “True Detective: Night Country,” the season follows Foster’s police chief as she investigates the disappearance of eight men from a research station in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska.
Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, John Hawkes and newcomer Kali Reis all shine in this acclaimed edition of the franchise, which we predict will compete in all the major categories at this year’s Emmys. However, before we look ahead to this season’s Emmy chances, let’s take a look back at the show’s history with the TV academy.
The first season, which was classified as a drama series, got off to a rocketing start with 12 nominations (including duelling bids for stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey). It won five of those races. However, seasons two and three, which were re-classified to be limited series,...

Marvel’s Blade has been dulled yet again, as star Aaron Pierre has exited the project, marking just the most recent snag in the project, which is set to be part of Phase Six in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As Pierre confirmed to Variety, “Early on, there were conversations…As the project evolved, I’m no longer part of that — attached.” Pierre’s character in Marvel’s Blade was unknown.
There has been a lot of change throughout the development of Marvel’s revisiting of the Blade franchise, most of which relates to talent behind the camera. For starters, Watchmen’s Stacy Osei-Kuffour was hired as writer in 2021 before being replaced by Michael Starrbury (Colin in Black & White) and a handful of others, including True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto and later Logan’s Michael Green. It’s widely believed that Aaron Pierre’s character would be dropped as subsequent drafts came in.

When HBO announced True Detective would return for a fourth season, headlined by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, it was hard to tell whether the new season would be a hit.
Despite a stellar freshman season, the two seasons that came after were less than spectacular, leading to speculation that the franchise wouldn’t get another chance on the premium cabler.
Thankfully, switching things up paid off — big time. Issa Lopez took over from original creator Nic Pizzolatto to craft a stellar fourth entry titled “True Detective: Night Country,” which became the biggest season yet.
Given the story’s open-ended nature and HBO’s quick renewal for Season 5, there were some big questions about the next entry, including whether there would be any holdover cast members.
Foster turned in a captivating performance as Chief Liz Danvers, but sadly, that will be her first and only season on the anthology hit.

Now that “True Detective” is renewed for a fifth season and “Night Country” creator Issa López is returning to oversee it, many fans are wondering if the HBO series will continue to go the anthology route or possibly feature the return of “Night Country” characters played by Jodi Foster and Kali Reis. Foster weighed in on a possible return while speaking to Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv at the 2024 Oscars. Foster is a supporting actress nominee for “Nyad.”
Unfortunately for fans who loved watching Foster’s Chief Liz Danvers, it sounds like Lopez will be sticking with the anthology route for “True Detective” Season 5. Foster told Variety’s Marc Malkin that her time on the show was “one and done” and “it’s an anthology.” Asked if she’s coming back, Foster said point blank: “No.”

Actor Michelle Monaghan was a part of HBO’s long-running anthology series True Detective in its first season. But as much praise as True Detective received, it also experienced its share of criticism. The show’s depiction of its female cast was a point of scrutiny for the series early on, which Monaghan couldn’t have disagreed with more.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson weren’t the only actors who received attention during True Detective’s first season. The hit show had a few notable female actors a part of its cast as well. Monaghan co-starred right alongside McConaughey and Harrelson, playing the latter’s wife in the crime thriller. She committed to the show after the show’s director, Cary Fukunaga, and showrunner Nic Pizzolatto sent her a script.

After the success of True Detective: Night Country, HBO has renewed the anthology series for season 5. More on the news below.
True Detective: Night Country wrapped its run earlier this week with a shocking, violent finale. The whole season, spearheaded by Issa Lopez, has divided audiences with its new, more supernatural approach to the traditional True Detective style.
Night Country nevertheless became the most watched season of True Detective, which has prompted HBO to renew the series for another season, with Lopez to return as showrunner.
As all previous seasons have focused on completely new characters, we can assume we’ve seen the last of Jodie Fosters’ Liz Danvers and Kali Reis’ trooper Navarro. That being said, Night Country did break almost all previous True Detective rules, so perhaps we’ll still return to Ennis, Alaska for another chilly mystery.
Series creator Nic Pizzolatto has recently been criticised for venting...

The series started in 2014 with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the lead roles, scoring rave reviews and high viewership.
One year later, the franchise imploded with a season featuring Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly, and Vince Vaughn.
At that point, it seemed the series was dead… only to get another reprieve in 2018 with Mahershala Ali as the lead.
The reviews were decent, but it didn’t succeed as much as its predecessors. The franchise went dormant again… until Jodie Foster agreed to appear on True Detective: Night Country.

Get ready to return to the scene of the crime, True Detective fans.
HBO execs announced today that they've renewed the network's flagship crime drama for a fifth season.
Issa Lopez, who helmed the season that wrapped up last week, will be returning as showrunner.
"Issa Lopez is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit," said HBO’s head of drama Francesca Orsi, in a statement issued today.
"She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera," Orsi added.
“Alongside Jodie [Foster] and Kali [Reis]’ impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success, we are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”

Issa López can't stop winning.
Season 4 of the hit HBO series "True Detective" was a massive risk, with show creator Nic Pizzolatto stepping back after three seasons to collect executive producer checks and whine on Instagram, while López took the series into a completely different direction with "Night Country" and navigated her predecessor's pettiness with the utmost grace. The risk paid off, big time, as "Night Country" became the most-watched season of the series yet, as well as the highest-rated on Rotten Tomatoes. So it's no surprise that HBO has wisely decided to renew the acclaimed drama for a fifth installment, with López returning for a new season under a multiyear overall deal with the company. Meaning, she will not only create season 5 of "True Detective," but she will also provide additional projects exclusive to HBO and the Max streaming platform. Just yesterday, we heard that Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the fourth season of the HBO anthology crime series True Detective (a season that’s known as True Detective: Night Country) “might” come back to do another season of the show. Now it’s a sure thing. Variety has broken the news that HBO has ordered True Detective season 5, and López, who has just secured new overall deal with the network, will be back at the helm.
True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the show, but once the third season wrapped up, his HBO deal expired and he signed a new (short-lived) deal with FX. HBO retained the ownership rights to True Detective, and with Pizzolatto gone they were interested in bringing in someone who had “a fresh voice with a different...

“True Detective” has been renewed for Season 5 at HBO. Issa López, the creator of “True Detective: Night Country,” will helm the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.
The renewal comes as little surprise, given the success of “Night Country,” which saw Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star in the fourth installment of the HBO anthology series. Per HBO, the season is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross platform viewers. The season finale on Feb. 18 was the most-watched episode of the season, drawing 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max. That represents a 57% increase over the show’s premiere viewership in January.

Nic Pizzolatto, creator of the True Detective franchise, has been vocal about his distaste for Season 4 of the HBO drama that stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis.
Although Pizzolatto is credited as executive producer for the fourth season, he was not involved with the series that Issa López wrote, executive produced, and directed.
Following the finale of True Detective: Night Country, Pizzolatto took to social media to give a platform to negativity about the show and has found himself in the middle of backlash over it.
Amid the controversy, Pizzolatto created an Instagram post for viewers to air out their positive and negative comments about the show.
“This here is the place for all your trolling/support/infighting around True Detective and the absolute moral degeneracy and misogyny of anyone who did not think it was good. Let’s move these screeds off my posts about my wife, true love,...

Nic Pizzolatto, the original creator of HBO’s “True Detective” franchise, published a bizarre Instagram post amid controversy generated in the aftermath of the show’s fourth season finale.
“True Detective: Night Country,” starring Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, ended its six-episode run on Feb. 18. Pizzolatto found himself in hot water after reposting comments to his Instagram story that slammed the show as “disrespectful and insulting” and a “hot mess.” “Night Country” was created by Issa López and marked the first run of “True Detective” episodes not written by Pizzolatto, although he was still credited as an executive producer.
In a new Instagram post, Pizzolatto addressed the fans hating on “True Detective: Night Country” by creating a post for them to channel their anger in the comments section. Pizzolatto wants fans to stop spamming his other, non-“True Detective” related posts with outrage, so he created one post that could...

Nic Pizzolatto got his career as a storyteller started by writing short stories and a novel called Galveston, then made his move into television by writing a couple episodes of the first season of the AMC series The Killing. He wasn’t pleased with that experience, telling Nola.com that, “I want to be the guiding vision. I don’t do well serving someone else’s vision.” So he left The Killing as it headed into season 2 and went off to create his own show: True Detective, which found a home at HBO. Pizzolatto’s deal with HBO was renewed twice over the years as he crafted three seasons of True Detective, with his final deal with the network earning him $3 million a year. He was going to work on the network’s Perry Mason reboot, but had to let it go so he could focus on True Detective. Once True Detective season 3 wrapped up,...

“Can’t blame me.” Those are the words of Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of True Detective, in response to a post on social media criticizing season four of the HBO anthology, the first cycle in which he has had no direct involvement. That tweet, as well as reposts of messages by the viewers critical of the new season, raises the question of what the show’s original creator has been up to since he left the series.

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the HBO anthology crime series, but he wasn’t creatively involved in the latest season, True Detective: Night Country, despite retaining an executive producer credit on the show – and he repeatedly let it be known that he wasn’t a fan of how the show was going in his absence. True Detective: Night Country comes to us from Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the season, and despite Pizzolatto’s objections, this season was able to draw in enough viewers that it became the most-watched season of the show, with Deadline reporting that it averaged 12.7 million cross-platform viewers, with 3.2 million checking out the season finale on the day of its release. So it’s no surprise to hear that López might be coming back for more True Detective.

The sophomore slump is a phenomenon all TV shows with breakout first seasons are in danger of experiencing. But maybe no show has ever sophomore slumped harder than HBO’s “True Detective.”
In January 2014, when the anthology series first premiered telling the offbeat story of Louisiana police investigating the murder of a young woman, “True Detective” was immediately hailed as one of the best shows of the (still barely begun) year. Nic Pizzolatto’s detective drama was a surprising, unconventional, philosophical story dressed in the conventions of a typical murder mystery, and proved intensely ambitious in its attempts to explore questions of religion, masculinity, and human nature. The universal acclaim powered it to several Emmy nominations, and the show — one of many seasonal anthologies of the time like “Fargo” and “American Horror Story” — seemed like the next great prestige TV hit.

Now that True Detective: Night Country has wrapped up its six-episode run, Nic Pizzolatto is taking another jab at the anthology series he created.
Following the season finale of True Detective: Night Country, Nic Pizzolatto chose to commemorate the occasion by sharing negative reactions from fans on Instagram. Those reactions called the latest season a “hot mess” that was “disrespectful and insulting” to Pizzolatto’s work. Night Country did make a few connections to the first season of True Detective, including a repeat of the “time is a flat circle” line, but that caused certain fans to accuse showrunner Issa López of butchering Pizzolatto’s dialogue.

Original “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto is once again making headlines for seemingly bashing the show’s fourth season, “True Detective: Night Country,” which was the first not to be created by Pizzolatto himself. “Night Country” hailed from Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes. Pizzolatto was still an executive producer on the show, but he distanced himself from “Night Country” during its run and generated significant backlash after reposting criticisms of the finale to his Instagram story.
Pizzolatto did not provide any personal commentary on the “True Detective: Night Country” finale. It’s Raymond Clark (Owen McDonnell), the heartbroken killer of “True Detective: Night Country,” who gets the famous line from the series (and its beloved first season): “Time is a flat circle.”
He’s talking about a lot of things — most explicitly, the spirit of Annie K. (Nivi Pederson) that he believes lives in the ice caves around them — but he’s also talking about “True Detective” and the very nature of episodic storytelling itself. Stories are told and retold and repackaged and remixed, genres interwoven, resolutions reached.
And “True Detective: Night Country” did a damn good job with all of that.
Following now-deleted comments from series creator Nic Pizzolatto on social media, audiences learned early on that not only did Pizzolatto not actually have a hand in the creation of the fourth season of the HBO series, but he didn’t...

The reception to True Detective Season 4’s finale, which premiered on February 18, 2024, has become a bone of contention. Some critics have lauded Part 6, considering it a redemptive entry; others were a tad bit more cynical. While this conclusion tied up loose ends, wrapped up the narrative, and solved the mysteries this season revolved around, not every viewer found it a fitting end.
There were a few questions unanswered and aspects left to one’s imagination. It’s safe to say several individuals deemed it frustrating.

López, on the other hand, co-wrote and helmed all six episodes of the new season. Pizzolatto was still an executive producer on the show when he announced that he had nothing to do with the fourth season.

True Detective has to be one of the most brilliant anthology mystery thriller shows ever made. Originally created by Nic Pizzolatto, the HBO series told a dark and haunting tale through the brilliant performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in its first season. The quality of the series took a nosedive in its second season and the third season while better from Season 2 didn’t really match the expectation that the inaugural season of True Detective set. Now, we are in Season 4 titled Night Country and with a new creative force behind the series, the fans are getting exactly what they want. So, if you have already finished the much awaited Season 4 of True Detective and are hoping for a renewal, here are some similar shows you could watch while waiting for the new season.

Fans of True Detective Season 1 must remember Matthew McConaughey’s character, Rust Cohle, saying “time is a flat circle” in a memorable scene. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote those lines, but he wasn’t involved in writing True Detective: Night Country.
A still from True Detective: Night Country (2024)
Despite being credited as an executive producer, Pizzolatto made it clear on social media that he had no part in season 4’s writing. True Detective Season 4 is the only season which is not created by him—who wrote every episode of the first three seasons.
This season, titled Night Country, is helmed by Issa López. She took on the role of director and co-writer for all six episodes of the new season. Now, the director of True Detective Season 4 disclosed the true motivation behind McConaughey’s memorable dialogue. This revelation came after the original writer (Pizzolatto) criticized her publicly.

It may not be the most highfalutin adjective, but if you wanted to describe the tone of True Detective: Night Country in a single word, you could do a lot worse than "spooky."
Sure, the show's previous seasons trafficked in creepiness as well, but in taking over for creator Nic Pizzolatto, new showrunner Issa Lopez has taken the "graveyard at midnight" vibes to a new level.
With its constant dark, howling winds, frozen corpses, and actual freakin' ghosts, Night Country has often felt more like a horror flick than a police procedural.
So it's fitting that True Detective Season 4 Episode 6 should kick off the finale proceedings by plunging our protagonists into an underground cave where a woman was murdered years earlier.
Navarro literally takes the lead in this stage of the investigation, following a whispering voice that once again has Danvers (and the audience) wondering if she's supernaturally gifted or...

This article contains spoilers for the "True Detective: Night Country" finale.
When "True Detective" aired back in 2014, one of the things that made it so darkly alluring was the folk and cosmic horror element. One of the most salient examples of this was the spiral symbol, which was first seen tattooed on the back of murder victim Dora Lange in the pilot episode. Alas, as the season went on, all we learned about this mysterious motif was that it was somehow tied to the cult responsible for Lange's murder and an ongoing child trafficking operation in Southern Louisiana. That and it seemed to symbolize Rust Cohle's (Matthew McConaughey) famous "Time is a flat circle" line.
After this, show creator Nic Pizzolatto largely ignored the spiral, aside from a brief mention in season 3 of the show. But then, Mexican filmmaker Issa López took over as showrunner, and in 2023, the trailer...
