Peter Hutchings’ feature about mismatched colleagues who fall for each other has little going for it apart from the leads’ palpable chemistry
This romcom set in a Manhattan publishing house is about as bland and as easily consumed as a cone of soft-serve ice-cream on a hot day. It’s essentially a sticky extrusion of sugar, trans fats and trapped air in cinematic form. Director Peter Hutchings has adapted a bestselling novel of the same name by Sally Thorne that pits perky executive assistant Lucy against square-jawed rival assistant Joshua. He is a Waspy corporate type who turns out to be more pleasant than he first seems.
As the title suggests, the two begin their relationship by seemingly loathing each other. They clash over issues of taste, given that Lucy started out in an upmarket literary fiction publisher and Joshua worked for a more mass-market house that published trashy supermarket-bound titles.

Photo: ‘The Hating Game’ The hating game is simple - Lucy and Joshua Templeman hate each other and try to make each others’ lives at work a living hell. Assistants at a publishing house, their close quarters, and competitive natures make it impossible for them to see eye to eye, in fact, they’d rather get into a physical fight than agree on something. The rules of the hating game are not set, they are constantly in flux, changing to suit rapidly conditions. The one constant: its players, Lucy (Lucy Hale) and Josh (Austin Stowell), dueling assistants at a publishing house who not only seem incapable of seeing eye to eye, but of very often getting damn close to actually punching out said eyes. There is indeed a thin line between love and hate, and as Peter Hutchings’ crackling “The Hating Game” opens, Lucy and Josh are inches from demolishing that line forever. Fans of best-selling author Sally Thorne, who burst onto the romance scene with the 2016 novel on which Hutchings’ film is based, will certainly know what to expect from the feature version, but

The round-up returns once again! With so many independent releases hitting theaters here in early September, it’s almost impossible not to have to play catch-up like this. Director Elise Duran’s “Can You Keep A Secret?” makes it clear from the very first moments the animated opening credits play over the Go-Go’s “Our Lips Are Sealed” that it’s going to be a sweet, if not satisfactory time spent in the golden-hour glow of this romantic comedy’s world. Based on Sophie Kinsella’s book, her first standalone novel after the success of her “Confessions of a Shopaholic” series, . That said, it lacks a sense of uniqueness to set it apart from other female-centric book-to-screen adaptations.

The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies ― London presents a look at the paranoia expressed by female protagonists in early horror with The Paranoid Woman's Film event on March 7. Also: details on Cold Moon and Lullaby on Tubi and Dan Hilliad's novel Bittersweet: 14 Macabre Tales of Love and Loss.
Miskatonic London's The Paranoid Woman's Film Event Details: "This class will introduce students to the horror films of the 1940s through those films often described as examples of the paranoid (or Gothic) woman’s film. These films, which emerged in response to the phenomenal success of Hitchcock’s Rebecca, feature a woman in love with a potential murderous lover. Although the cycle begins before the war, its key period of productivity was during the war years, and it can therefore also be seen as a key genre associated with changes in the audience during this period. Director Peter Hutchings’ “Then Came You” isn’t a movie for cynics. It’s for romantics — or at least teen sleepover parties. Though it has many of the qualities that made teen terminal-illness weepies “The Fault in Our Stars” and “Me, Earl and the Dying Girl” work, Hutchings’ dramedy eschews much of those films’ sincerity and intimacy in favor of sap and saccharine.
Withdrawn 19-year-old Calvin Lewis (Asa Butterfield) is fearful of most things in life — particularly because he thinks he’s dying. He’s convinced his dad (David Koechner) that he needs an expensive litany of medical testing. Despite the results turning up negative for every illness, Calvin is sure he’s sick and journals everything from his daily temperature to the size of a mole on his chest. Concerned older brother Frank (Tyler Hoechlin) has tried in vain to pull the hypochondriac out of his depressive funk, but his attempts have failed miserably.

Sometimes the most important lesson that people can learn is that it’s not how long they live, but how they live the life they have, that truly matters. That’s certainly the case for the two main protagonists in the upcoming adventure film, ‘Then Came You.’ The comedy-drama touchingly emphasizes the fact that people must learn […]

The premise behind Then Came You is a tough sell. A hypochondriac attends a support group for people dying of cancer, befriends one said person, and helps her fulfill a demented bucket list while allowing her lack of boundaries to shove him into the arms of the woman he’s been too afraid to ask out. It’s a sort of rom-com spin on Fight Club‘s Jack and Marla getting off on others’ sorrow for the tween sect. There will be initial confusion at the film turning an incurable disease cutesy, disdain for its apparent use of death as an opportunistic avenue towards confidence, and revulsion in thinking the filmmakers might turn the tables and have their lead fall for the wildly eccentric girl who’ll be dead by the end.
Here’s the thing, though. While director Peter Hutchings and writer Fergal Rock have very much delivered the material that allows this weariness,...

It’s a little weird that there’s a multitude of films where teenagers fall in love, while at least one is sick. Usually, it’s cancer, though any terminal illness will do. These movies, largely based off of Young Adult books, run the gamut from cliched to heartbreaking. Beyond their Ya roots, however, they do hit on some of the things that make a cinematic romance work. In the case of Then Came You, the story doesn’t really trend any new ground, but the quirky chemistry of the leads help string things together. Though flawed, it ultimately charms its way into your good graces. The film is a romantic comedy centered on two individuals with very specific medial issues. Meeting at a support group, teenager cancer sufferer Skye (Maisie Williams), befriends Calvin (Asa Butterfield), an older teen who she thinks also has the terminal illness. However, the 19 year old is actually a hypochondriac,...

There are countless manipulative, saccharine-coated teen romancers that aimlessly bask in cliched conventions of youth-oriented stagnation and alienation. Thankfully, the new year of 2019 starts off on a decent note by offering a different kind of upbeat teen romance genre that has legitimate heart, wit, and gentle substantive pathos. In director Peter Hutchings's ("The Outcasts") quirky-minded yet solidly conceived dramedy Then Came You the sentiment is blatantly clear about living for the moment and valuing the little things that matter despite the size of the adversity. Then Came You does not necessarily break ground in its perception of youthful love and friendship but it manages to promote a genuine feeling of comfort and consciousness. Hutchings's nifty gem is a profound combination of amusement and sorrow set against a playful...

Eden Sher and Victoria Justice make sympathetic protagonists for a story that owes nearly everything to a million high school comedies before it; their likability is unlikely to carry the pic far, even in the digital arena.

Voltage Pictures will fully finance and co-produce the drama with Bcdf Pictures. Talks are underway with buyers in Berlin.
Williams, Butterfield and Tyler Hoechlin star in the story of a friendship that develops between Skye, a terminally ill yet spirited teenager with a terminal illness, and timid Calvin.
While the young man helps Skye achieve her ‘bucket list’ ambitions, she helps Calvin confront his fears and fall for the apple of his eye, Izzy. Peter Hutchings will direct from Fergal Rock’s screenplay.
Production on the feature said to be in the vein of The Fault In Our Stars is set to begin on April 24 in New York. CAA and Voltage Pictures jointly represent Us rights.
Claude Dal Farra, Brice Dal Farra, and Brian Keady produce for Bcdf with Nicolas Chartier and Alissa Phillips for Voltage. Dal Farra and Chartier brokered the deal.
