True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. So, if you love the thrilling and dreadful story of Under the Bridge, here are some other shows that have similar tone and story elements that you should check out next.

What is it that makes some people obsessed with the idea of tracking down cryptids – legendary creatures which, they believe, just might be real? Is it about adventure, getting attention, or just being able to convince oneself, for a little while, that there’s more to life than the daily grind? Driving up into the mountains, Kay (Chloe Pirrie) might, first and foremost, be looking for a way to connect with the world. She assures herself that she’ll make new friends, they will be normal people, it will be fine. Is she just an anxious person or is her situation already less than fine? In a puzzler of a film which sees time itself distorted by the influence of an otherworldly creature, we will become uncertain not only where she has come from, but when.

Kryptic
A mysterious disappearance in the woods. The search for a mythical monster. A broken down marriage crushed by obsessive control, and a woman’s confrontation with herself. Kryptic, which screened at SXSW 2024, is a puzzle of a film, not just for the audience but for its central character, who struggles to remember her own identity even as she connects with deeper aspects of who she is.
That woman, Barb, is played by Chloe Pirrie, and I caught up with her and director Koutrney Roy at the start of the festival. Both were in high spirits, in part because this is Kourtney’s first feature and it has done very well to get this far.
“One evening over drinks, Paul [Bromley] said ‘I want to write a film for you,’” the director tells me. “I'm kind of naive. I said, ‘Oh, like a short?’ He was like, ‘No, a feature. I'm going.

Bigfoot isn’t the only elusive cryptid in horror. Director Kourtney Roy‘s feature debut, Kryptic, centers around an amnesiac in pursuit of a missing cryptozoologist and the Canadian cryptid she was pursuing. Don’t expect a straightforward approach to this cryptid tale, though. Kryptic earns its title and then some, unfurling an esoteric psycho-thriller that uses its forest dwelling creature as an atypical monster metaphor.
Kay Hall (Chloe Pirrie) can’t remember anything before the bizarre encounter in the woods that wiped her memory and left her traumatized. A return to where it began, Krypto Peak, stirs up scattered but visceral memories of an eerie Sasquatch-like creature, and a tour group notes Kay’s uncanny resemblance to missing cryptozoologist Barb Valentine. It sparks Kay’s quest to seek out and find the real Barb, hoping it’ll bring answers and fill in her missing memories. The closer she gets to uncovering the truth,...

Chloe Pirrie (“The Queen’s Gambit’) headlines psycho-thriller “Kryptic,” which will have its world premiere at SXSW’s Midnighter strand. A first clip has been unveiled for the film.
The film follows Kay (Pirrie), who is in trouble. A strange encounter in the woods has left her with no memory. Only one thing is certain: she is the spitting image of missing monster hunter, Barb Valentine. When an intruder breaks into her house, she runs, with no idea where she’s going; but she knows her only chance to reconnect is to shed more light onto Barb’s mysterious disappearance. Random encounters seem to point her in the right direction, but what was hoped to be a journey of self-discovery gradually becomes a hunt for the monster itself.
Written by Paul Bromley (“Ouija”), the film is directed by Kourtney Roy (“Slice of Heaven”). The cast also includes Jeff Gladstone (“Resident Alien...

Department Q, the popular Danish crime novel, has seen a film series adaptation since 2013’s Danish film, Department Q: The Keeper of Lost Causes. It would then be followed by 2014’s Department Q: The Absent One. Then, that installment would be followed by 2016’s Department Q: A Conspiracy of Faith. Those would then proceed with 2018’s Journal 64, 2021’s The Macro Effect and the upcoming Boundless. Additionally, Netflix will be producing a series based on the crime novels.
Deadline has just unveiled the cast for the upcoming Department Q Netflix show. The series, which is based on author Jussi Adler-Olsen’s popular works, is currently filming in Scotland. Matthew Goode, who is known for Antony Armstrong Jones in season two of Left Bank’s regal drama The Crown, has been cast as Dci Carl Morck, along with Chloe Pirrie, who you may know from The Queen’s Gambit, plays ruthless and ambitious prosecutor Merrit Lingard.

BET has announced the cable premiere of the documentary “Loudmouth,” which explores the legacy of social justice leader Reverend Al Sharpton. The documentary will premiere Feb. 25 at 4:30 p.m. on BET, BET Her, VH1, BET+ and Showtime at a later date.
“‘Loudmouth’ tells the story about how and why I had to be loud to call out the racism in a northern city like New York, where you were competing with the bright lights of Broadway,” Rev. Sharpton said in a statement. “In this crucial year, when we are fighting for racial justice in the voting booth and in the streets, I hope this film will inspire the next generation of Loudmouths to get off the sidelines.”

In today’s episode of Bingeworthy, our TV and streaming podcast, co-host Mike DeAngelo dives back into “Under the Banner of Heaven.” The show follows a devout Mormon detective Jeb Pyre (played by Andrew Garfield) whose faith is tested as he investigates a brutal murder seemingly connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into Lds Mormon fundamentalism and their distrust in the government. There’s a terrific supporting cast involved too, including Gil Birmingham, Sam Worthington, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Chloe Pirrie, Adelaide Clemens, Rory Culkin, and more.

It was no easy task for Wyatt Russell to try and make murderer Dan Lafferty a multi-dimensional character. He found himself able to do this by concentrating on what Dan did out of what he considered to be love. “That was one of the things that we really focused on. He loved his family so much that he was so afraid of being ex-communicated. Any questions he ever had about what life might be like in the outside world weren’t even considered,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). He also believes that Dan found true freedom in embracing a more fundamental teaching of the Lds Church and used that as a way to justify his actions. “He’s a great manipulator and a fantastic narcissist, two qualities that a lot of very evil people with a lot of power and wielding...

The history of the world is filled with predatory men who will go to great lengths to justify abusing and oppressing women and girls.
On Under the Banner of Heaven Season 1 Episode 5, things get bleak for all the women involved, and the truth about Ron is revealed.
It's the running theme of a story that keeps losing its focus.
Even though this episode is about Ron and Dan, their wives are far more compelling characters. These women are brutalized by their husbands, psychologically tortured in Matilda's case, and physically brutalized in Dianna's case.
Jeb's meeting with the Bishop and his wife reveals that these women were of little consequence to the church, possibly because they were both outsiders and forgotten by their families either due to distance or because they had written her off for "joining a cult."
Chloe Pirrie handles Matilda's resigned courage gracefully, making us feel the disgust...

Well-made, if a bit dense, Under The Banner Of Heaven Season 1 Episode 1 bears the beginnings of a solid true-crime drama.
Here, Mormons are on both sides of the law, as Detective Jeb Pyre (Andrew Garfield) must solve a horrific case that brings a prominent Lds family under scrutiny.
There are so many characters and we are bombarded with them in such rapid-fire succession that it can be challenging to keep track of them all at first.
Garfield utilizes his soft-spoken charisma well, and he's so kind and gentle that it's often hard to take his Jeb Pyre seriously as a detective. Though he appears to know his stuff, he lets his beliefs get in the way and cloud his judgment.
He's likable but flawed, and I will say that it is refreshing to see a detective in s prestige crime drama that breaks all the tropes. He's a caring family...

The title “Under the Banner of Heaven” comes from John Taylor, third president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Lds). “God is greater than the United States, and when the Government conflicts with Heaven we will be ranged under the banner of Heaven against the Government.” Taylor was— like his predecessors Brigham Young and Joseph Smith, the church’s famous founder — a professed polygamist. “The United States says we cannot marry more than one wife; God says different.”
Plural marriage is only a small plot point in the FX true-crime limited series “Under the Banner of Heaven,” centering on the 1984 murder of a Mormon mother and her infant daughter. But it’s ultimately what gets Dan Lafferty (Wyatt Russell) excommunicated, and that is a very big deal in Lds-land. “The Laffertys — they’re kind of like the Utah Kennedys,” explains Detective Pyre (played by Andrew Garfield). It’s only been about three weeks since the end of awards season, but, on Wednesday night, Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield was back on a red carpet in Hollywood for the premiere of his new series, “Under the Banner of Heaven.”
The FX project marks Garfield’s first miniseries, with the actor playing Detective Jeb Pyre, a Mormon man whose faith is shaken by an unthinkable crime. Based on the non-fiction book by Jon Krakauer, the show’s seven episodes follow the events that led to the 1984 murder of Brenda Wright Lafferty (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her baby daughter in a Salt Lake Valley, Utah suburb. The enormous popularity of Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit” limited series took editor Michelle Tesoro by surprise. She thinks the pandemic played some part in keeping people confined to their homes, and once viewers got a glimpse of Anya Taylor-Joy as determined orphan chess prodigy Beth Harmon, they were hooked. And then, of course, the ’60s glam appeal of sex, drugs, alcohol, and rock music kicked in, along with the fascination of chess as a metaphor for power and control in a male-dominated sport.
But the editorial objective from the outset was finding the sweet spot between the right amount of chess and the emphasis on Taylor-Joy’s beguiling face. In fact, after cutting Netflix’s acclaimed western “Godless” with writer-director Scott Frank, Tesoro was particularly conscious of pacing on “The Queen’s Gambit.” “We had a lot of conversations about pacing after I read two drafts of the script, because I remember feeling that,...

In order to be a truly great chess player — not just a good one, but one of the greats — you need to possess a canny combination of concentration, acuity, and nerve. What seems like a simple board of 64 squares quickly becomes a battlefield; the key to winning the ensuing fight is being able to analyze and anticipate an opponent’s moves without your face betraying a single calculation. Chess is such a mentally punishing, esoteric game — which makes it extremely hard to portray onscreen with half the thrill it might have in reality, especially if the viewer doesn’t know all the rules. But “The Queen’s Gambit” manages to personalize the game and its players thanks to clever storytelling and, in Anya Taylor-Joy, a lead actor so magnetic that when she stares down the camera lens, her flinty glare threatens to cut right through it. Most crucially, the series uses...

"You're not well... You don't even seem to realize that." IFC Midnight has revealed the first official trailer for a "psychological thriller rippling with suspense" titled Kindred, from filmmaker Joe Marcantonio. This one is skipping out on October entirely, and opening at the beginning of November this fall. Kindred follows vulnerable mother-to-be Charlotte, played by Tamara Lawrance, as she is taken in by her recently deceased boyfriend's mother and her step-son, who seem increasingly obsessed with her every move. Soon plagued by strange hallucinations, Charlotte's suspicions grow about Margaret and Thomas' intentions for her unborn child. The cast includes Fiona Shaw, Jack Lowden, Edward Holcroft, Chloe Pirrie, & Anton Lesser. This looks extra discomforting and intense, especially when all the weird things start happening in the second half of the trailer. Definitely worth a look. Here's the first official trailer for Joe Marcantonio's Kindred, direct from IFC's YouTube: When...
