Kerry Washington no longer plays the fictional Olivia Pope on “Scandal,” but she still suits up like a gladiator when it comes to expressing her opinions about Washington, D.C. and Hollywood.
The actress, producer, and director told Variety on the red carpet at the annual Through Her Lens: The Tribeca Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program luncheon that she is “sometimes reluctant” to tell people who they should support in politics, but she does believe in ‘”voting up and down the ballot for candidates that really support humanity and inclusivity.”

Love Lies Bleeding Ending Explained: Do Lou and Jackie Escape Successfully?(Photo Credit –IMDb)
A24 is quite well known for making films that do not follow the traditional path, and their latest, Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding, is no different. What starts off as a passionate and pure romance between Lou (Kristen Stewart) and Jackie (Katy M. O’Brian) soon turns to roads that are bloody and full of terror. Set in the southwest of the 1980s, Love Lies Bleeding is violent, toxic, and romantic, blurring the line between reality and fantasy.
What Happens in Love Lies Bleeding?
Love Lies Bleeding is about Lou and Jackie and how all hell breaks loose when the two fall in love. Initially, their romance seems innocent enough, and their chemistry is sizzling on the screen right from the moment they set eyes on each other. Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brien excel in Saint Maud director Rose Glass’ sophomore feature. Here’s our review of Love Lies Bleeding.
If there was any concern or doubt that Rose Glass, the director of 2019’s Saint Maud, wasn’t the real deal, her new film puts all that to rest. Glass’ second feature, Love Lies Bleeding, is a haunting, pulpy affair about the whirlwind romance between a gym manager and an aspiring bodybuilder.
In a star-making turn, Katy O’Brian plays Jackie, who runs into Kristen Stewart’s Lou on her way to Las Vegas for a bodybuilding competition. Their chemistry is sizzling, but Lou’s troubled, criminally inclined family soon complicates their romance.
The cast is rounded out by Jena Malone, Dave Franco and Ed Harris, who sports a particularly impressive hair-do. In a lesser film such ridiculous, over-the-top hair extensions might be a distraction, but here they only add to the uneasy,...

After earning rave reviews on the festival scene before landing in theaters last month, Love Lies Bleeding, a revenge thriller from Saint Maud director Rose Glass, has released at home on VOD this week.
Love Lies Bleeding is now available for digital purchase ($24.99) and rental ($19.99)! We’ve also learned that the film is coming to Blu-ray on June 6, 2024.
Katy O’Brian stars alongside Kristen Stewart (Underwater) in the new film from A24, which is said to be “a romance fueled by ego, desire and the American Dream.”
I wrote in my Sundance review, “With a visionary at the helm and an impressive cast willing to follow along with every wild turn thrown at them, Love Lies Bleeding makes for a captivating ‘80s set crime thriller unafraid to get deeply weird and ultra-violent.” Expect things to get weird and violent: “That it devolves into madness, complete with humor and surreal imagery, means...

Big news for the "They don't make 'em like they used to" crowd: They just did and, as those who were paying attention know, it's been playing in theaters nationwide for weeks now. "Love Lies Bleeding" lies at the crossroads between a throwback '80s noir and a queer romance that's unabashedly of its time, with both aspects coming together to create an intoxicating mix that's mighty difficult to resist. Starring Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian as a pair of star-crossed lovers who wind up right in the crosshairs of a local crime lord, director Rose Glass' iron-pumping, steroid-injecting, and thoroughly sweat-dripping thriller is one of those movies that practically leaps off the screen and swallows audiences up in the grime and muck of its world.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Anyone But You (Will Gluck)
If anything, Anyone But You‘s spirit is encapsulated in having a running joke about “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield (gags involving that artist’s back catalog seeming to be the Will Gluck auteurist touch) as if the movie’s wholly bland pop soundtrack puts it above that at-least-memorable 2000s ditty. Slight self-awareness with no effort to actually do anything new is the definition of unearned arrogance. This is why it fails as a romcom: too much smarm and not enough charm. – Ethan V. (full review)
Where to Stream: Netflix
Garrett Bradley: Devotion
If you’ve only seen Garrett Bradley’s staggering, Oscar-nominated documentary Time, it’s prime time to catch up on a pair of her earlier work.

Tom Cruise’s new movie, Mission: Impossible 8, is in the process of being filmed, and the sequel to last year’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One promises to deliver us yet another action-packed installment. And while the release date has been pushed back a whole year, updates are coming in quickly, and we have learned that Katy O’Brian has joined the movie cast in an unspecified role, as of the time of writing.
This piece of information is definitely welcome, as O’Brian has recently received praise for playing Jackie in the romantic thriller Love Lies Bleeding alongside Kristen Stewart, with Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Dave Franco, and Ed Harris also starring. Disney and MCU fans might know O’Brian from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, appearing as Jetorra, but also from The Mandalorian, where O’Brien played the treacherous Elia Kane. Stars: Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brien, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, Ed Harris, Dave Franco | Written and Directed by Rose Glass
Lou (Kristen Stewart) lives a remotely modest life, working as a gym manager in a small town in New Mexico. She soon meets Jackie (Katy O’Brien), an ambitious bodybuilder with dreams of competing in Las Vegas. As the two grow closer, Lou’s family dynamics take over their lives, leading to disastrous consequences.
Let’s begin by stating the obvious — Rose Glass’ work in Love Lies Bleeding has changed the lesbian canon of cinema forever. Even in 2024, a shrewd, meaningful sapphic movie that doesn’t try to be sexual for the sake of pleasure is terribly hard to come by, with golden nuggets such as Carol and Disobedience passing muster. While these often-tragic love stories are all well and good, Glass has doubled down on her unique offerings by incorporating genre and nuanced scope,...

Kristen Stewart confessed getting jealous of her co-star on the set of Rose Glass’ Love Lies Bleeding, an erotic thriller film, which forced her to do the exact opposite of what her character was supposed to do. A trio of moderate releases – One Life, The American Society Of Magical Negroes and Knox Goes Away join Janus Films’ celebration of master musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, and César award winning The Animal Kingdom as the next wave of 2024 indie films rolls out post-Oscars.
Focus Features’ American Society Of Magical Negroes, the feature directorial debut of Kobi Libii opens at 1,146 theaters across the North America. Premiered at Sundance, see Deadline review. A satirical comedy about a young man, Aren (Justice Smith) who is recruited by Roger (David Alan Grier) into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making sure white people never feel bad about themselves or get stressed out — because bad things happen when they do. Also stars Rupert Friend, Michaela Watkins, An-Li Bogan, Drew Tarver and Nicole Byer. Libii originally developed the project as an alumnus of both the Sundance Writers and Directors Labs.

Ready for a cinematic “walk on the wild side”? Perhaps something in the film noir category, but not similar to something you’d run across on one of those nostalgia streaming channels. Maybe something set just before the turn of the century rather than the decade post-wwii. Sure, this new flick is a crime thriller involving multiple murders, but that’s just one aspect. Let’s see, there’s a big (truly huge) daughter/father conflict so it’s a family drama. And it’s certainly a romance ala’ girl meets girl. Oh, and one of them is seeking fame in the competitive world of female bodybuilding events. Now, that’s really different and certainly unique. Mix all those genres and subplots together and you get an insight into the provocative title, Love Lies Bleeding.
Oh, the backdrop year is in the 20th century, way back in 1989. We first meet...

The internet and social media are filled with all kinds of people. There are supporters, haters and trolls everywhere. A lot of celebrities prefer staying off social media for their own sanity. Over the last ten years, we’ve seen these platforms become easily accessible to anyone and everyone. Almost a decade ago, actress Kristen Stewart shared how she feared that someone from a social media platform might kill her.
In 2012, when Kristen Stewart was just 22, she talked about how, because of social media, people might always know where she is. In 2024’s bizarre bid to become the year of the underwear, Kristen Stewart is the latest celeb to go pantsless. Since brief-focused looks debuted on runways last year, many stars have been spotted at fashion shows and red carpets sans trousers.
Most recently, Sydney Sweeney debuted bedazzled briefs at the Miu Miu presentation during Paris Fashion Week. Kiernan Shipka also wore underwear (cable knit with a matching cardigan) to the Chloé runway show. Now, Stewart has jumped on the trend, going pantless twice this March (so far). See her looks here:

Kristen Stewart knows that she doesn’t look her best in ’80s pulp fiction “Love Lies Bleeding,” British filmmaker Rose Glass‘ follow-up to her breakout debut “Saint Maud.” Oscar nominee Stewart (“Spencer”) gives her best performance to date as Lou, who we meet with her gloved hand down a toilet. She’s a shut-down, unhappy lesbian, hungry for something more, who runs a gym and sports a stringy mullet. She comes to life when she falls in love with bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O’Brian). Things take a violent turn as Lou’s past comes back to haunt her. And feeding Jackie steroids to help her win an upcoming contest in Las Vegas may not have been the smartest move.
From the script stage, Stewart saw Lou clearly. “It’s like an adult comic book,” she said on Zoom. “When I think about the characters, I can imagine the line-drawing version of them.

Rose Glass is back with a vengeance in her sweat-slick ode to American underbelly tales, Love Lies Bleeding. The Saint Maud filmmaker returns with a brawny psychological thriller that isn't afraid to get weird or take risks, which is both a warning and encouragement. Kristen Stewart and Katy O'Brian unsurprisingly flex their talents while wrestling with every twist and turn in Glass' queer criminal caper, gorgeously shot like high art meets a weightlifting competition. It's gritty like grip chalk and obscure in measured doses, comparable to something illicit like Jim Mickle's Cold in July splashed with Glass' exciting penchant for surrealist pops in an otherwise grounded narrative.
Kristen Stewart stars as reclusive Crater Gym manager Lou, who takes an immediate shine to the beefy and beautiful bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O'Brian). One thing leads to another, and Jackie ends up romantically entangled with Lou, shacked together while Jackie trains for a competition in Las Vegas.

A24 is back in select theaters this week with Love Lies Bleeding, a revenge thriller from Saint Maud director Rose Glass that earned rave reviews on the festival scene.
Fresh off the World Premiere at the Sundance Film Festival 2024, Love Lies Bleeding is coming to theaters March 8. A new behind the scenes featurette that includes interviews with the cast teases some of the extreme violence and weirdness ahead.
Katy O’Brian stars alongside Kristen Stewart (Underwater) in the upcoming film from A24, which is said to be “a romance fueled by ego, desire and the American Dream.”
I wrote in my Sundance review, “With a visionary at the helm and an impressive cast willing to follow along with every wild turn thrown at them, Love Lies Bleeding makes for a captivating ‘80s set crime thriller unafraid to get deeply weird and ultra-violent.”

Plot: A gym manager, Lou (Kristen Stewart), falls head-over-heels in love with a female bodybuilder, Jackie (Katy O’Brian). But, their bliss is short-lived, as the two end up getting tangled up with Lou’s criminal father (Ed Harris).
Review: Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding is a dark, stylized, ultra-mean-spirited neo-noir. It skates on the edge of perhaps being a little too self-aware for its good in the surreal finale, but it’s still a very entertaining and twisty thriller.
Kristen Stewart is perfectly cast as the laconic noir anti-hero who hooks up now and then with a girl (Anna Baryshnikov), she can’t stand but otherwise leads a lonely life with her cat. Being set in 1989, the constantly smoking Lou is trying to quit with books on tape that have little to no effect, only for her life to be blown up when she sets her eyes on Katy...

Maximalist horror-comedy has become such a mainstay of 21st-century indie cinema that a late-’80s-set lesbian romance that uses schlocky gore tinged with meta humor to figuratively explore the tumult of new love is hardly as outré as it would have seemed a decade ago. Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding, with its hyper-saturated, giallo-evoking cinematography and lapses into fantastical imagery, freely plays with the boundaries of realism. This hyper-stylization, accompanied by a steady score of growling synths, packs some punches, but that isn’t to say that we can’t see a fair portion of them coming.
The small but tough Lou (Kristen Stewart) appears to be one of only two workers at a grimy gym, Crater’s, in middle-of-nowhere America. We meet her as she’s digging through vomit that’s clogged the gym’s toilet, a seemingly common occurrence at this sweaty den of muscled men, which...

At the Berlin Film Festival press conference for her new film “Love Lies Bleeding,” Kristen Stewart said she thinks the era of queer films “being so pointedly only that is done,” adding that it’s time for films to focus on “sidelined perspectives” while “not making it all about the reasons that they’re sidelined.”
“Love Lies Bleeding” stars Stewart as reclusive gym manager Lou, who “falls hard for Jackie (Katy O’Brian), an ambitious bodybuilder headed through town to Las Vegas in pursuit of her dream,” the film’s synopsis reads. “But their love ignites violence, pulling them deep into the web of Lou’s criminal family.”
When asked if filming the gory and twist-filled “Love Lies Bleeding” had changed her perspective on how queer stories are centered in cinema, Stewart sounded off on the topic.

I was about seven years old the first time I saw her — a leather-clad woman with half of a shaved head and mountains of muscle over her 5'6" frame. My eyes would be engrossed the second she appeared on screen, and despite living in an affirming household, I felt like there was something weird or wrong about my fixation. Her name was Luna Vachon (real name Gertrude Vachon), a professional wrestler who perfectly encapsulated the glamour and pageantry of the WWF (now WWE), without ever sacrificing God-like strength and muscle tone. American culture has a weird relationship with visibly strong women, but the tides have been changing over the last five years. No longer relegated solely to punchlines or objects of fetishization, beefy women are now praised with the same adoration as their male counterparts.
This is to say that Rose Glass's sophomore feature "Love Lies Bleeding" couldn't be arriving at a better time.

Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian are delivering a gut punch of a crime film.
The duo are at the center of Rose Glass’ “Love Lies Bleeding,” which was one of IndieWire’s must-see films from Sundance 2024. “Saint Maud” writer/director Glass helms the drama about reclusive gym manager Lou (Stewart), who falls in love with bodybuilder Jackie (O’Brian). The hitch? Their romance comes in the wake of Lou’s criminal family and unleashes a murderous rampage.
Dave Franco, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, and Ed Harris also star in the film, which is co-written by Weronika Tofilska.
Per A24, “Love Lies Bleeding” is billed as an “off-the-wall, rambunctious lesbian love story” set in a suburban small town that has a “heightened Americana sensibility.”
The feature is a co-production between A24 and Film4. A24 produced alongside Andrea Cornwell for Lobo Films and Oliver Kassman for Escape Plan Productions.

Three years ago, writer-director Rose Glass’ feature film debut, Saint Maud, justly received plaudits for its disturbingly deep dive into faith, fanaticism, and insanity. Her second film, Love Lies Bleeding, a queer neo-noir set in 1989 New Mexico, continues Glass' exploration of psychological extremes, specifically the not-unfamiliar iteration of love, usually, but not exclusively romantic, that can lead to obsessive fixation, the occasional murder motivated by righteous rage or self-preservation, and messy, post-murder clean-ups. Love Lies Bleeding initially centers on Lou (Kristin Stewart), the night manager of a gym located on the outskirts of a dusty, dirty New Mexico town. Glass introduces Lou at literally one of the lowest points in her life, unstopping a clogged toilet in the gym’s bathroom while Daisy (Anna Baryshnikov),...

Near the end of Love Lies Bleeding, someone eats a large black beetle. It happens in a moment of abrupt anger, and it’s bitten into so forcefully that it’s as if they’d done this before––either relieving a shard of stress or intimidating someone. The movie wouldn’t suffer without it, but its inclusion, even for just a few seconds, is one of those added details that locks in everything you’ve seen and understood: the cruel violence, the surrealist transformations, the rage that infects people with the desire to destroy other living things.
This is a Rose Glass movie, which means it packs a killer, multi-faceted punch and resists easy classification. Her second feature after St. Maud is a stylized neo-noir love story, a drama about addiction, an athletic underdog tale, and a bloody thriller compounding genres and narratives that overlap and blend into each other without any wrinkles.

Filmmaker Rose Glass has an audacious way of exploring obsession, pushing it to extremes in beguiling, genre-defying ways. Her feature debut, Saint Maud, centered on a nurse who took her religious fanaticism to extremes, compounded by an obsession with her latest patient. Glass’s sophomore effort, Love Lies Bleeding, wields obsession as a destructive coping mechanism for the pain that love can inflict. With a visionary at the helm and an impressive cast willing to follow along with every wild turn thrown at them, Love Lies Bleeding makes for a captivating ‘80s set crime thriller unafraid to get deeply weird and ultra-violent.

Kristen Stewart’s domination of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival continued at the Variety Sundance Cover Party presented by United Airlines, where Stewart was honored for her starring roles in two big festival premieres: “Love Me,” a post-apocalyptic romance film in which she stars opposite Steven Yeun, and “Loves Lies Bleeding,” an A24-backed crime thriller in which she played a reclusive gym manager who falls for a local bodybuilder.
“It’s hard to get here,” Stewart told Variety at the party about returning to Sundance, where she has premiered more than a dozen movies throughout her career. “Not because it’s an established and elite film festival, but because it supports marginalized voices. Voices that aren’t heard anywhere else. It’s a solidifying, communal feeling and it only makes you stronger to go back into a world of a ‘no’ and say, ‘I know that there’s a place for me.

Sundance: First Reactions to Kristen Stewart’s “Brutal, Triumphant” Lesbian Pic ‘Love Lies Bleeding’
The official description for Rose Glass’s Love Lies Bleeding on the Sundance Film Festival website calls the A24 pic “an off-the-wall, rambunctious lesbian love story” that “crashes into a family drama of the darkest ilk in this muscular thriller.” It’s also cited for “violence, graphic sexual content and other mature content.”
It’s a pretty spot-on description — plus some surprise scenes best saved for the film’s March 8 release — and the capacity crowd seated inside Park City’s Eccles Theater on Saturday night greeted the world premiere with an enthusiastic response and partial standing ovation. A man seated next to The Hollywood Reporter relayed a single adjective to a friend after the credits rolled: “Crazy.” Other times as the action unfolded, there were cheers, wows, fidgeting as one character’s face is destroyed in an act of violence, and maybe a few laughs at unintended moments.

When a magnificently gnarled Ed Harris, wearing stringy Argus Filch hair and chomping on a horned beetle in a moment of psychotic rage is far from the weirdest thing in a movie, you know you’re in for a wild experience. That’s what Brit director Rose Glass delivers in Love Lies Bleeding, a lesbian neo-noir drenched in brooding nightscapes, violent crime and more hardcore KStew cool than has ever been packaged in such a potent concentrate. Seriously, is there anyone who doesn’t want to watch Kristen Stewart flicking back a greasy shag, driving an old pickup and chain-smoking in grubby tank tops?

There was a time, in the ’90s, when indie film noir thought it was being hip by imitating the trappings of ’40s thrillers — the dark shadows, Venetian blinds, and “slinky” femme fatales. But a true noir never really looks back; it’s always pushing forward, toward fresh new varieties of desire and dread. “Love Lies Bleeding” is like that. It’s the second feature directed by Rose Glass, the British director of “Saint Maud” (2019), and though it’s made with a powerful sense of style, there’s nothing retro or mannered about it. It’s set in a small desert town in rural grunge New Mexico in 1989, and from the opening moments, which unfold at the warehouse workout gym where Lou (Kristen Stewart) toils away as a manager, the movie lets you taste the scuzzy deadbeat Western sleaze as surely as Mailer’s “The Executioner’s Song” did.
