There is a reason Am I Ok? had to wait two long years since its Sundance premiere in 2022. It’s a relatively vain turn-of-the-century character study that summarizes an intimate issue, resolving everything within 90 minutes or less. That’s a shame because the film could have used an extra 30 minutes to explore three endearing performances that are so much better than the material.
The problem is not the script. It’s the fact that Tig Notaro, a signature comedian of her generation, fails to generate the type of comedy that makes her so popular in Am I Ok?. The final result has heart, and the chemistry between the two characters is off the charts. Yet, that’s used as a plot device to move the story along instead of creating something more meaningful.

Mordant satire follows a photographer who discovers that it’s not only the acting-career prospects of his needy old acquaintance that have expired
Here is a quarterlife-crisis comedy written and performed by YouTube comics Clay Tatum and Whitmer Thomas; it is shruggingly deadpan and throwaway, but with a real satirical point and it is genuinely and unexpectedly bleak.Tatum plays a version of himself: Clay, a guy who has come to LA to make it as a photographer. He’s had work published but has real problems paying the rent and has got involved in an illegal fake sublet scam. Out of the blue, an old high-school acquaintance appears; this is Whit (Whitmer Thomas), a needling, wheedling guy who has come to LA to break into acting. Whit wants to hang out with Clay but he’s someone that Clay doesn’t especially want to befriend.

As the arthouse cinema market continues to regain its footing, the list of what may be considered an overlooked film could be quite vast, depending on one’s metrics. For our yearly feature highlighting the 50 best films you might have missed––arriving before our overall top 50 films––we’ve sought to dig deep to find the gems that deserved more attention upon their initial release and have mostly been left out of year-end conversations. Hopefully, with many widely available on a variety of streaming platforms, they will begin to find an expanded audience.
While many documentaries would qualify for this list, we stuck strictly to narrative efforts; one can instead read our rundown of the top docs here. Check out the list below, as presented in alphabetical order.

Multi-talented filmmaker Erin Murray, a most welcome mainstay on the pages of Dn, has just delightfully broken the proverbial mould again with her Anyway U Want It music video for Bambina – the latest musical incarnation of Los Angeles-based Artist/Actor/Director Andrea Adolph. Taking a subversive dive into the complications of navigating virtual reality intimacy for a couple, Bambina’s initial hesitation at the outlandish concept soon gave way as she fully embraced the farcical writhing VR sex positions conceived by Murray for their comedic rather than arousing qualities. It’s a video which pairs seamlessly with the music, reflecting questions posed in Bambina’s lyrics and hitting all the right beats with humour, questioning norms and reflecting upon the very nature of modern relationships. With Anyway U Want It released online last week and having already garnered a coveted Vimeo Staff Pick, we spoke to Murray about her approach...

Who's up for some virtual reality fun?! This short film for a music video is hilarious and prescient, and it's absolutely worth a quick 4 minutes of your time to watch and laugh about. LA-based choreographer turned filmmaker Erin Murray created this music video for the track "Anyway U Want It" from Bambina - available online now. Bambina is a musician from California (check out more of her music here) and also stars in the video as one of the two, ahem, participants. "A couple navigates the glitches & complications of virtual reality intimacy." Yes, VR sex - coming soon to homes everywhere. Starring Bambina & Whitmer Thomas, and also guest starring Newman Wolf. This reminds me of the Black Mirror episode "Striking Vipers", similar in some ways, though amusing in many other unique ways. And it's similar to the short Vert with Nick Frost. A clever play on the VR era we're entering,...

CatVideoFest, which is just what it sounds like, joined notable indie debuts and festival favorites Shortcomings and Passages, the re-release of Shiva Baby and juggernaut Talk To Me in another weekend of varied specialty fare, both new and holding over. Indies are helping drive a buoyant box office. They’re also waiting for the Barbenheimer tsunami to recede as bit as these unusual blockbusters vacuum up the arthouse/adult audiences.
Sony Pictures Classics said Sundance favorite Shortcomings by Randall Park grossed an estimated $316.4k at a 404 locations. This article contains spoilers for all seven episodes of Slip.
Zoe Lister-Jones’ seven-part series Slip on Roku Channel opens with a pretty average status quo before things take a wild turn. Mae (Lister-Jones) is an art curator at a local museum and is happily married to her gentle husband Elijah (Whitmer Thomas). Well, sort of. She’s a little bored in their marriage that seems to run on an underwhelmingly repetitious cycle every day — making the couple more and more distant.
However, the plot takes a universe-bending turn after Mae goes out to drink after a successful art exhibition that celebrates Buddhist cosmology and its other-worldly creature, the Hungry Ghost. Her best friend Gina (Tymika Tafari) tags along as they go to a local bar across the street (although she’s busy trying to seduce a monk who attended the exhibit), where Mae hooks up with an attractive musician called...

Roku's Slip may present as a comedic story about a woman traveling to different dimensions through orgasms, but at its core, it's an exploration of female desire. Starring and created by Zoe Lister-Jones (Life in Pieces), Slip centers on Mae Cannon, a museum curator who has become restless in her 13-year-marriage to her soft-spoken college sweetheart, Elijah (Whitmer Thomas). When Mae reaches her breaking point and hooks up with a sexy musician (Amar Chadha-Patel), she wakes up in a parallel universe in which she's married to him — and just as dissatisfied with the way her life has turned out. As Mae enters new relationships in different worlds, she searches for a way back to Elijah, her "original" life, and her true self.

Clay (played by director Clay Tatum) is desperate for a break. He’s trying to establish himself as a photographer and needs something which will make him distinctive. Could a bad haircut be the solution? It’s quite British looking, says his wife, but she doesn’t seem convinced. With the pair of them to support, she heads out of town on a work trip. All he really wants to do is vegetate and watch TV, but he knows he ought to aim for a bit of productivity, so he spends his first day alone wandering through Los Angeles taking pictures. It’s in a graveyard that he bumps into Whit (Whitmer Thomas) – not a close friend, but somebody he’s hung out with in the past. After a slightly awkward exchange, they decide to go up to Clay’s flat to drink a few beers.
That’s where things get complicated.

"I'm being transported to other dimensions every time I orgasm." Roku has revealed the official trailer for an upcoming mini-series titled Slip, the latest creation from actress / director Zoe Lister-Jones. Premiering at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival before it's streaming via Roku in April. Restless in her marriage, Slip — starring Zoe Lister-Jones — follows Mae through a surreal journey of parallel universes, married to different people, trying to find a way back to her partner, and ultimately, herself. It seems to be based on her own life - as Zoe recently parted with her husband Daryl Wein, who she worked with on projects over the years. For Clay, the man at the center of The Civil Dead, there isn’t much happening in life. Portrayed by director and co-writer Clay Tatum, he’s an unemployed LA photographer whose only friend appears to be his wife Whitney (Whitney Weir). When she leaves for several days on a work trip, she asks him to be productive and not just drink beer in the living room. Of course Clay does just that, and in a desperate attempt to get quick cash he pretends to put their apartment up for rent so he can collect application fees from hopeful renters. At first glance he’s a schlubby jerk (with a terrible haircut to boot), but his self-awareness and dry wit makes him affable, even if he’s content to do whatever it takes to avoid doing anything.

Probably most of us, at one time or another, have had a friend in our lives, whose friendship, after a time, became more of a burden than a gift. The friend who can't seem to read social cues or take hints as to when their company is no longer desirable. (And it's entirely possible that some of us have been that friend). Fear of hurting someone's feelings, but more likely, dislike of being 'the bad guy' or being cowardly, might lead us to not telling this friend how annoying they are, or just cutting them out of our lives without any warning. But what if, getting rid of them was impossible? The Civil Dead, the first feature from filmmaking team Clay Tatum and Whitmer Thomas,...

Christopher Storer, the creator, executive producer, director and co-showrunner of FX’s breakout comedy hit The Bear, has signed with WME for representation.
Storer became one of the most sought-after comedy creators following the critical and commercial success of The Bear, which emerged as the hottest comedy series of the summer. I hear a team of WME agents — including Ari Emanuel, CEO of WME parent Endeavor, whose brother Rahm and Storer share a Chicago connection — were involved in wooing Storer, who developed and sold The Bear while at UTA. I hear this all came down today, and Storer’s IMDb Pro page already has been updated to reflect the agency switch.

The 2022 North Bend Film Festival took place over the weekend and once again, the team put together a killer slate. The lineup featured a variety of fascinating and entertaining films, and one of my favorites was The Civil Dead. It’s a very darkly comedic ghost story that may very well be the complete opposite of every ghost story you have ever seen.
There is a specific language that cinema has developed over the years to tell a ghost story onscreen. The ghost will haunt a specific place. They are not solid; they simply float through any object, wall, or door they cross paths with. They are often shown onscreen to be transparent or sometimes sporting wounds inflicted on them during their death. They often have some sort of unfinished business tying them to the world of the living; a task left undone or a truth that needs to be revealed.

Like its Park City counterpart, the Slamdance Film Festival has pivoted to an all-virtual affair this year, but it will now get underway Jan. 27, one week after Sundance, its proudly DIY spirit intact. The 28th edition of Slamdance boasts 23 premieres — 13 world, six North American and four U.S. debuts — and sections such as Department of Anarchy and Experimental Shorts, along with Blockchain Fairy Tales, a collaborative storytelling experiment.
“On one hand you can say it’s bad and disappointing when we cannot gather in Park City, but we see the good — the opportunity to reenvision what a festival can be, what Slamdance can be,” says Peter Baxter, Slamdance president and co-founder. “Our new Slamdance Channel, which will host the festival this year, fits into the bigger picture of a decentralized media future.”

As we look ahead to the new year, one of the first festivals of 2022 has unveiled its lineup. Slamdance Film Festival will return to both Park City, Utah for a physical festival from January 20-23, 2022, along with holding virtual screenings from January 20-30, 2022. With a lineup of 28 features, 79 shorts, and 7 episodes, the feature competition lineup was chosen from over 1,124 submissions.
“We are anti-algorithm. That’s always been true, but it’s more urgent than ever as we continue to celebrate truly unique voices that defy simple classification and transcend analytics,” said Slamdance President and co-founder Peter Baxter. “This year our programmers gravitated towards films that embody the true DIY spirit of guerrilla filmmaking and push the boundaries of what’s possible in storytelling. The Slamdance team is honored to introduce everyone of these storytellers, who are changing the media narrative and elevating the art form of independent film.”

Perhaps a great option for the festival in terms of laugher fare, Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne team together for what is not their first creative collab, but their directorial debut. Former SNL and current The Ellen DeGeneres Show writer Lauren Pomerantz penned Am I Ok? — which is being coined as a heartwarming comedy. Production began in February of 2021 back in Los Angeles with Dakota Johnson leading a cast comprised of Jermaine Fowler, Whitmer Thomas, Molly Gordon, June Diane Raphael, Sean Hayes and Notaro herself. Notaro was of course a big deal in Park City back in 2015 when she was the subject of the docu tribute Tig.…...

As LGBTQ culture filters further into the mainstream, it seems every TV show (and even most films) have a queer character these days. Loki is bisexual, “The L Word” is back, and “Euphoria” has every teenager (and some adults) wishing they were as cool as Jules. But, as discussed in this IndieWire Anniversary piece about the future of queer film and TV, more doesn’t always mean good. With every project trying to squeeze a queer character into even the most unlikely places, more and more of our stories are being told without our input. Queer filmmakers and creators need industry support now more than even, or this next wave of inclusivity will be just as disappointing as not being represented at all.

Fifteen minutes into Brandon Colvin’s third feature, A Dim Valley, Albert (Whitmer Thomas) presents Ian (Zach Weintraub) with a generously packed bowl of marijuana, which the two proceed to light up. Shortly thereafter, they witness a surreal vision in the forest near the field research camp where they’re spending the summer, but to call this a drug-induced departure from realism would be inaccurate. From the very beginning of this whimsical backwoods tone poem, Colvin establishes something like a stoner ambiance: pacing is lethargic, odd bits of behavior are lingered on, glassy-eyed stares into the middle distance proliferate. There’s a sense […]

"We're here to fulfill our purpose." Altered Innocence has released an official trailer for an indie film titled A Dim Valley, which is described as "part hilarious stoner comedy and part transcendental meditation on mysticism and love." This originally premiered at the Oxford Film Festival and Raindance Film Festival last year, arriving in theaters in July. A curmudgeonly biologist and his slacker graduate assistants muddle their way through a summer research project. Deep in the Appalachian woods, they encounter a group of mystical backpackers who change their lives in mysterious ways. Starring Zach Weintraub, Whitmer Thomas, Robert Longstreet, Rachel McKeon, Rosalie Lowe, and Feathers Wise. This is all quite strange and definitely seems like they took some psychedelics. I like the quote at the end because I'm also very confused. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Brandon Colvin's A Dim Valley, on YouTube (via ScreenAnarchy): A curmudgeonly biologist...

There’s a point in Lynn Shelton’s Sword of Trust where the four principal characters are being led into a situation with as much chance of ending in their death as it does the payment of forty thousand dollars. Sitting there in that moment of uncertainty without any bearing as to where they were or where they were going, Mel (Marc Maron) can’t help but smile and revel in the fact that he’s about to see something so wild he can’t wrap his head around it being true. He’s going to see a bunch of people who have warped their minds to the point of believing the Confederate army actually won the Civil War. The answer to “How can people think like this?” would soon be his either way.

There are few chores more taxing on the film festival circuit than sitting through an improv-based comedy whose performers don’t have the skill set to pull it off — an unfortunate sight that’s been turning up all too regularly since “Waiting for Guffman” made well-executed improv comedy look deceptively easy nearly a quarter-century ago. The considerable pleasure of Lynn Shelton’s latest “Sword of Trust” is that everyone onscreen is so good at this kind of work that one wishes more tightly scripted comedy screenplays had such savory dialogue, or inspired character conceptions.
A shaggy-dog tale that throws together a handful of strangers seeking profit from an alleged Civil War artifact, “Sword of Trust” is light and loose, the kind of movie likely to illicit chuckles if seen at home (rather than the guffaws it earned from receptive crowds at its SXSW premiere). But in its small way, it...

May The Best Man Win, a new mockumentary style comedy from director Andrew O’Connor, had its world premiere at SXSW on Saturday, March 8.
The film is about two friends obsessed with viral pranks, who film everything with YouTube stardom in mind.
The two pranksters, Whit (Whitmer Thomas) and Drew (Drew Tarver), invite a girl, played by Rosa Salazar, to join their team and end up fighting each other in an all-out, R-rated prank war for her affection. The film borrows heavily from Borat and Jackass, or the recently Oscar-nominated Bad Grandpa, with the filmmakers playing pranks on unsuspecting bystanders within the context of the fiction film. In other words, just as Borat famously featured some non-scripted pranks mixed in with scripted character development, May The Best Man Win features real-life pranks and a scripted love story.
