Gold Derby can exclusively reveal that Jason Segel is entering the “Shrinking” episode “Imposter Syndrome” as his 2023 Emmy Award submission for Best Comedy Actor. “Imposter Syndrome” streamed on February 24, 2023 and is the sixth episode of the Apple TV+ show’s first season.
In this installment, Brian (Michael Urie) buys a wedding ring for Charlie (Devin Kawaoka), and makes plans to propose at a party at Jimmy’s (Segel) house. Jimmy is apprehensive about throwing the party, since it reminds him of the strain in his and Tia’s (Lilan Bowden) marriage in the months leading up to her death. Jimmy gets heavily drunk at the party and throws up, but Brian’s proposal is still a success. Gaby (Jessica Williams) assures Jimmy that Tia still loved him despite the difficulties in their marriage. Jimmy thanks her for her friendship, and the two impulsively have sex.

When developing her on-screen friendship with co-star Christa Miller, “Shrinking” star Jessica Williams said she positioned it as if they were hanging out “like a ‘Real Housewife of Pasadena.’”
In other words, she approached the relationship between her character, Gaby, and and Miller’s character, Liz, through the lens of her fascination with reality TV and obsession with the “Real Housewives” franchise. In this episode of Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast, Williams and Miller share how that TV friendship has developed into a real-life, off-screen one as well.
In separate interviews, Williams and Miller discussed the dynamic of their characters’ evolving personalities and what they hope for the second season. Listen below!

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Season 1 of “Shrinking.”
You’ve heard this before, but Bill Lawrence already knows when his show is going to close. “We pitched three seasons — the beginning, middle and end,” he says.
No, not “Ted Lasso,” which is widely known to have been planned as a three-season arc, even if the team involved won’t confirm that the current season is the last one.
It’s different with “Shrinking.” “It does not have a sports season component to it the same way that that’s a function of the story. Like, ‘I wonder if they win or lose!'” Lawrence says. “Part of the fun for me in doing shows with, like, Jason Segel and Harrison Ford, is that you can tell actors that you’ve always wanted to work with, ‘If you give me three seasons, that’s fine if you want to split.

Death, divorce and disease overwhelm the therapists at the center of “Shrinking” — and it’s not just their clients’.
Co-creators Jason Segel, Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein wrote the role of upbeat Gaby for Jessica Williams, knowing that the “Love Life” star and former “Daily Show” correspondent would inject some much-needed vigor to the show and offset the gloom and crankiness of colleagues Jimmy (Segel) and Paul (Harrison Ford). When Jimmy loses his wife, Tia (Lilan Bowden), his grief spills into his work with clients to a dangerous degree, and his associates must help him untangle it despite drowning under their own problems. For Paul, that’s a Parkinson’s diagnosis. For Gaby, it’s her dysfunctional marriage.

Shrinking, the newest comedy from Jason Segel and the team behind Ted Lasso, has arrived on AppleTV+. The series follows a therapist who struggles at work after the death of his wife. He finally breaks down and starts telling his patients exactly what he thinks, which turns out to be life-changing for many people — including himself. The star-studded cast of Shrinking includes some faces that might look familiar, so here’s a breakdown of the stars and who they play.
‘Shrinking’ cast members Jason Segel as Jimmy and Harrison Ford as Paul | AppleTV+ Jason Segel plays Jimmy Laird
In addition to helping create Shrinking, Jason Segel stars as James “Jimmy” Laird. The death of Jimmy’s wife has caused him to isolate himself from his friends and family, and he can’t get his head straight at work. He finds a new, unorthodox method of giving advice to his client,...

Apple TV+’s Shrinking is built around a familiar irony: Jason Segel’s Jimmy is a therapist who, as evidenced in an opening scene that sees him downing pills and booze with hired sex workers while his semi-estranged teenage daughter (Lukita Maxwell’s Alice) sleeps upstairs, could probably use some healing himself.
That his acting-out is an expression of unresolved grief gives the dramedy, created by Segel and Ted Lasso‘s Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein, enough heft to draw a few tears, while his fumbling attempts to get his life back on track prove good for some giggles. But over the course of its ten-episode season (nine half-hours of which were sent to critics), Shrinking eventually reveals itself to be what a therapist like Jimmy might pinpoint as a consummate people-pleaser: too eager to be liked to risk being honest, even at the expense of undermining its own sense of purpose.

Plot: Jimmy is a grieving therapist who breaks the rules and tells his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives … including his own.
Review: Now and then, a series immediately clicks with audiences. The most recent example of this is the AppleTV+ series Ted Lasso which has united audiences across the globe with a heartfelt and hilarious look at a broken character striving for positivity and success despite the odds. It is no coincidence that the latest AppleTV+ series bound to unite audiences and critics, Shrinking, comes from Ted Lasso writers and executive producers Brett Goldstein and Bill Lawrence. Teaming with Jason Segel and an ensemble cast chock full of brilliant performances, Shrinking is my favorite series of 2023, thanks to a combination of realistic portrayals of grief, therapy, and parenthood while still delivering a hilarious, heartfelt,...

On your mark, get set, run for your lives. The NCIS team pulls security duty for a Navy admiral who’s the grand marshal of a Thanksgiving 5K — even lab denizens Jimmy (Brian Dietzen) and Kasie (Diona Reasonover) are out in the field — but chaos erupts when a shooter opens fire. “Their relaxed race turns into a crime scene right in front of them,” Reasonover says. The only fatality: A turkey float explodes after a bullet hits its hidden generator. (Credit: Sonja Flemming/CBS) Was the admiral the target? The scientists examine the burned husk back at the evidence garage. Meanwhile, Knight (Katrina Law) asks Kasie to lunch at her sister’s (Lilan Bowden) so the guest can play peacemaker between the siblings. “We see Kasie in a new light. After a few cocktails, she lets loose!” reveals Reasonover, who cowrote the ep, her first for NCIS, with Scott Williams.

Murderville is returning for a special episode this holiday season. On the Netflix murder mystery-comedy series, senior detective Terry Seattle (Will Arnett) will investigate the murder of Santa. In the episode, Arnett will be joined by Jason Bateman, Maya Rudolph, Eliza Coupe, Kurt Braunohler, Haneefah Wood, Lilan Bowden, Dennice Cisneros, Tawny Newsome, and Courtney Parchman.
The Murderville series debuted in February with six episodes. There's been no word yet on the possibility of a second season, but decisions are typically made within a month or two of a show's debut. The release of a holiday special 10 months later would seem to indicate that the series may still have a chance of being renewed.

Netflix’s “Murderville” is angling for major Emmy attention with the streamer submitting the show for consideration in the variety sketch series categories, where it would potentially face-off against the likes of “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and reigning champ, “Saturday Night Live.” However, Variety has learned exclusively that the Television Academy deemed the Krister Johnson-developed show a comedy series, where it will now compete with shows such as “Abbott Elementary,” “Ted Lasso” and its streaming counterparts “Cobra Kai” and “The Chair.”

Three of the guest detectives have been submitted for guest actor (comedy): Conan O’Brien, Marshawn Lynch and Kumail Nanjiani. Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek issued a memo to staff members March 7 to state that the corporation “unequivocally” supports LGBTQ+ rights, despite donating to “Don’t Say Gay” bill backers for years. But Disney employees quickly took to Twitter to voice their disdain, calling the statement too, little too late.
“[Disney is] starting to include more LGBT characters that let kids know that being gay is all right. But when they have donated to the sponsors and co-sponsors of the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill and they have made no position against this bill, and they are going to continue donating to these politicians, they are essentially saying that this bill is Ok,” animation writer Benjamin Siemon said in a video posted on Twitter. “This bill is going to hurt kids, and that’s why I’m asking Disney to please take a position on the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill...

As the Walt Disney Co. takes heat for a report detailing how the company has financially backed all of the sponsors of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation, employees and artists associated with Disney have taken to social media to criticize its response to the bill.
Particularly upsetting many staffers is CEO Bob Chapek’s memo expressing “unwavering commitment to the LGBTQ+ community” despite the lack of a public statement opposing the bill, which would limit discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools.
The email, which Chapek sent to Disney staffers on Monday, reads: “In terms of our communities, we are and will continue to be a leader in supporting organizations that champion diversity. In 2021, we provided nearly $3 million to support the work of LGBTQ+ organizations. And, we have a long history of supporting important events like Pride parades.” Directly addressing Disney’s silence on the bill,...

Every episode of “Murderville” is essentially like a murder mystery dinner party, except there’s only one person actually playing. Based on the BBC3 series “Murder in Successville,” the new Netflix comedy throws celebrity guests headlong into solving cases alongside loose cannon detective Terry Seattle, played by Will Arnett. Everyone besides the new “trainee” — including Haneefah Wood as Terry’s boss slash ex-wife and Lilan Bowden as the precinct’s forensics expert — is following a punny script that gently prods them toward the real identity of the murderer. With only 30 minutes to get through all the clues, three different suspects, and at least one undercover mission, “Murderville” doesn’t exactly try too hard to stump its guests, let alone its audience. Every suspect is extremely happy to chat about how much they hated the victim while surrounded by clues so obviously damning they might as well have glowing arrows pointing at them.

Netflix has released the first trailer for “Murderville,” the new crime comedy series starring Will Arnett.
The series is adapted from the BAFTA award-winning BBC3 series “Murder in Successville,” which was created by Andy Brereton and Avril Spary. Arnett stars as Terry Seattle, a senior homicide detective who is paired with a different celebrity guest star to solve a murder case in every episode. The show’s twist is that the guest stars aren’t given a script, forcing them to improvise their way through the case and ultimately guess who the killer is at the end of the episode.
The trailer shows Arnett’s Seattle interacting with his guest stars, coaching them along as new developments in the absurd cases reveal themselves.
“You’re supposed to gasp,” Seattle deadpans to guest star Kumail Nanjiani after an officer declares there’s been a murder. “Weird gasp,” he mutters when Nanjiani follows his instructions.

To actually become integrated within a culture is difficult enough, but to feel at ease living in it or even regard it as a home is quite a task. However, this process is made even more difficult when the culture you were born with is regarded as inferior by others, or at least you get the impression this is the case. In her short feature “Becoming Eddie”, director Lilan Bowden, who is an actor and comedian, explores issues such as these within the context of the USA in the 1980s, a period whose richness in music and films also saw various incidents of xenophobia and racial stereotypes in popular features such as “Sixteen Candles” by John Hughes, to name one example.
“Becoming Eddie” is screening at CAAMFest Forward

For Lilan Bowden, portraying Bex in Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack” was the first time she played a culturally relevant role. The Taiwanese American actress quickly learned how much it meant for her community to see a multi-generational Asian American family on prime-time television, tackling everything from teenage pregnancy to feminism.
Since the show ended last year, the actor-turned-director has continued to push for opportunities to put Asian American families on the screen, most recently signing on to helm Korean American writer Ed Lee’s autobiographical film, “Becoming Eddie.” The film, which debuted at last week’s Bentonville Film Festival, is Bowden’s directorial debut, and the festival itself has become a mini-showcase of sorts for many Asian American filmmakers.
“Here was another chance for me to keep the conversation going, to keep telling stories that were really personal to me,” she told Variety. “I connected deeply to a little...

Pan Pacific Park is located in a family-friendly area of Los Angeles, filled with local shops and across the street from Park La Brea known for being home to Angeleno newbies. Right next door to the park is The Grove, an outdoor mall that is adjacent the iconic Original Farmers Market, an L.A. institution that attracts locals and tourists alike. The area is fairly lively on a regular basis, but on May 30, 2020, the park served as a location that was part of a bigger movement for the protection of Black lives.

Over three seasons, Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack” has tackled everything from learning disabilities to coming out. Centered on a multi-generational Asian American family, the show follows the titular Andi Mack (played by Peyton Elizabeth Lee) as she wades through middle school life after learning a bombshell of her own: that the woman she thought was her older sister, Bex (Lilan Bowden), is actually her biological mother and Andi’s birth, a result of an unplanned pregnancy. But now the series that won both a GLAAD Award and a Television Academy Honor for “television with a conscience” in 2018, is signing off.
The show ends its run with Andi grappling with the possibility of leaving her friends for art school.
“I didn’t want to end with a cliffhanger. I believe people will miss Andi and her friends and her family,” creator and co-executive producer Terri Minsky tells Variety. “To me,...

Andi Mack star Lilan Bowden will sit in the director’s chair for Becoming Eddie a comedy short from Ed Lee. The two have partnered to launch a fundraising campaign for the project which puts the lens on growing up as an Asian American kid in the 1980s, a time when first-generation children of immigrants were expected to assimilate.
Written by Lee and based on his own experiences, the film follows a Korean American boy in ’80s New Jersey who makes a wish to be popular with his mostly white classmates, then wakes up with the voice of the world’s most famous foul-mouthed standup comedian. Helen Hong, who is known for her role in The Thundermans and recently starred in the untitled Jessica Gao pilot, will co-produce and star alongside Charles Kim. Joyce Liu-Countryman is set to produce.

Lilan Bowden is literally a woman of two worlds like so many others that wants more opportunity that’s based on her skill and talent rather than her looks. It’s kind of obvious that if a person looks more like one ethnicity than another that many people are going to pick up on it and start to cast them in stereotypical roles that kind of pigeon-hole their talent. While this is highly suspect and not at all complimentary to a person’s skill set it’s easy enough for some people to get by since like Lilan they don’t stop pushing for other

Amidst a month filled with culturally relevant movies and TV shows starring actors of Asian descent, add Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack,” which wrapped up its second season Monday night. While the series never leaned too heavily on its characters’ Asian roots, it didn’t ignore them either. This season sprinkled in a Chinese New Year celebration, a dumpling-making bonding session, and a significant use of the yin-yang symbol.

Season 1 was concerned with her adjusting to big revelations — the people she thought were her parents are really her grandparents, and her cool older sister Bex (Lilan Bowden) is actually her mom — while this season deepened that mother-daughter bond to a “Gilmore Girls” level.
