Bidding wars have already begun for the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. Buyers snapped up six titles in the days leading up to the fest, including one that A24 purchased sight unseen: David Lowery’s “A Ghost Story,” starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. Other movies acquired in the past two weeks are “Berlin Syndrome” (Netflix), “Call Me By Your Name” (Sony Pictures Classics), “Casting JonBenet” (Netflix), “Cries From Syria” (HBO for television rights) and “Long Strange Trip” (Amazon).

With 120 features playing at Sundance, there are plenty of hot titles remaining for acquisition executive, though it will be tough for any film to exceed last year’s $17.5 million purchase of “The Birth of a Nation” by Fox Searchlight, the biggest deal in the festival’s history.

It was bring your family to work week on The Voice—so it's not weird that this week's elimination was extra-emotional, right? The Top 11 live eliminations included a performance from Brad Paisley, group songs from Team Gwen (New Radicals' "You Get What You Give") and Team Adam (The Beach Boys' "Wouldn't It Be Nice"), and a very sweet Thanksgiving celebration with the contestants and their families. Unfortunately, someone also had to go home. Don't want to know who was eliminated? Read no further unless you've seen the episode! Okay, are you ready? The bottom two singers who had to compete for the live Voice Save were Team Pharrell's Evan McKeel and Team Gwen's...

The confetti shower (traditionally reserved for “winner’s anthem” moments on reality singing competitions) landed smack in the midst of The Voice Top 11 results night — and my conspiracy theorist mind is struggling to comprehend if it was just a fluke or if there was some subtle subtext intended by exec producer Mark Burnett & Co.

Aaron Sorkin's Steve Jobs — a gigantic game of musical chairs that has seen David Fincher, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, and Sony all think differently about their involvement — started filming this week, which means it is now a lot harder for everyone in the cast to quit. Here is the official list of actors who managed to be sitting down when the music stopped: Michael Fassbender as Jobs, Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak, Jeff Daniels as Apple CEO John Sculley, Kate Winslet as Macintosh marketing chief Joanna Hoffman, Michael Stuhlbarg as developer Andy Hertzfeld, and Inherent Vice's Katherine Waterston as Jobs's girlfriend Chrisann Brennan. Universal also revealed that the last of the film's three long scenes will take place in 1998, at the Apple product launch that introduced the iMac. Go get those royalty checks, New Radicals.

Thursday morning provided its share of surprises and snubs, but the Academy’s musical branch took a pretty clear anti-star stance in the Best Song category.
One year after the likes of U2, Pharrell Williams and Arcade Fire dominated the music categories, Oscar’s Best Song voters left big names like Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Patti Smith out of contention.
The biggest names in Best Song, instead, come from Selma’s entry into the category: “Glory” performed by John Legend and Common. Because the Academy enjoys formality the pair’s given names - John Stephens (Legend) and Lonnie Lynn (Common) - can now be added to the collective trivia file.
The song was one of just a pair of nominations for the historical drama, but having just won the Golden Globe in the same category, it begins the race as the front-runner.

As with last year's Best Original Song nominees, the Academy's 79-song list of potential nods was not a very good indicator of what would actually make the cut. Although names like Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Coldplay popped out as possible winners, voters opted for a diverse mix of pop and classic songwriting verve this year.

Gregg Alexander is a free agent who makes the music he wants to make. The affable singer/songwriter whose New Radicals existed briefly between 1997 and 1999, turning up the hit "You Get What You Give," co-penned and produced the songs for John Carney's terrific summer musical film "Begin Again." Keira Knightley headlines as a bright folk chanteuse — rocked by a breakup with her cocky, more successful pop star ex (Adam Levine) — who drifts into the sights of an alcoholic indie music exec (Mark Ruffalo), who spies more than just coffee shop-lite talent in the young Gretta. The film's standout track is "Lost Stars," which is headed for the Best Original Song Oscar nomination and has popped up at various award shows throughout the season, including a rare performance at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. Alexander, meanwhile, is on the award circuit and back in the spotlight after New Radicals disbanded 15 years ago.

The Billboard and Hollywood Reporter Film & TV Music Conference launched Wednesday with a question-and-answer session featuring composer Gregg Alexander, hosted by Billboard senior editor of film and TV, Phil Gallo. Best known to mainstream culture as frontman of the New Radicals -- the short-lived late-1990s rock band behind the hit "You Get What You Give" -- the Grammy-winning songwriter made his film-composing debut this year by writing songs for and scoring the Weinstein Co. film Begin Again. Having shied away from the limelight for years, disillusioned with the notion of fame while writing under various pseudonyms, Alexander spoke about identifying

This week at the end of October is the point in the Oscar race where pundits begin spinning their wheels. The festivals are over, the critics’ awards haven’t started yet, and no new movies are arriving, leaving little to actually go on in terms of new predictions.
Keep in mind, when an Oscar pundit talks about movies that haven’t arrived yet, they’re referring to movies they haven’t seen, and in fact no one has seen (Selma, Big Eyes, American Sniper, A Most Violent Year, Unbroken), not movies you haven’t seen (just about everything, save Boyhood, Birdman, Whiplash and St. Vincent and The Judge if they stood a chance).
For instance, Peter Knegt opened his column with the stat that “At this point last year, all but one film that would go on to win an Academy Award had screened in some capacity.” What he’s...

Last year's "Alone Yet Not Alone" shenanigans were a nice reminder that the Academy's Music Branch can certainly march to its own drum (no pun intended), for better or worse. So you never can tell how the Best Original Song Oscar race will turn out, and the highest of profiles isn't necessarily a guaranteed pass. Nevertheless, this year's race — already marked by contenders from popular music such as New Radicals' Gregg Alexander ("Begin Again") and the legendary Patti Smith ("Noah") — has just picked up a trio of heavy hitters. I'm told that two of the final films still to be revealed this season, Ava DuVernay's "Selma" and Angelina Jolie's "Unbroken," feature original tracks that mainly play over the closing credits. "Glory" from the former comes courtesy of John Legend and Common, while "Miracles" from the latter is performed by Coldplay. "Miracle," I'm told, begins over "Unbroken's...

Beverly Hills — Gregg Alexander is enamored by movies. He grew up in a conservative household where television was "Satan's tool," but he'd sneak off to friends' houses to watch theirs instead. He talks passionately about filmmakers like the Coen brothers, Michael Haneke and Mike Leigh and seems eager to be a part of an industry he finds incredibly efficient. So it's perfectly fitting that he would eventually make his way there via a collaboration on John Carney's "Begin Again," and maybe even more understanding that after 15 years of being relatively reclusive away from touring and the media, he's finally speaking out again in support of the film and his work on tracks like "Lost Stars," which is primed for a Best Original Song Oscar nomination. "It's been exciting and to some degree emboldened me and been a reminder that film and music are amazing dancing partners," Alexander says of his experience.

Adam Levine has unveiled the lyric video for his ballad 'Lost Stars' from the Begin Again soundtrack.
Levine's new clip features scenes of him romancing Keira Knightley from the upcoming music-themed movie, which is directed by John Carney (Once).

Greta then tries to launch her own career with the help of a down-and-out record executive (Mark Ruffalo) and his daughter (Hailee Steinfeld).

This morning we kicked off our coverage of the upcoming Oscar season, more or less, with our annual list of contenders in each category and some misguided early predictions. One category we don't get around to until later in the season is Best Original Song as we meticulously add to our on-going list of potential nominees. But I can already tell one is going to blow the rest out of the water this season. No, I'm not talking about a power ballad along the lines of last year's winner "Let It Go," I'm talking about a modest track from John Carney's "Begin Again" that recalls 70s singer/songwriter magic of Carol King, Cat Stevens, etc. I'm talking about Adam Levine and Gregg Alexander's "Lost Stars," which will be the big push from The Weinstein Company on the film. The Galway Film Fleadh, Ireland's leading film festival, today announced its opening and closing films: Taking place from Tuesday, July 8th to Sunday, July 13th, the festival will open with musical romantic-comedy "Begin Again," and finish up with celtic noir thriller "An Bronntanas." "Begin Again," featuring music from New Radicals' Gregg Alexander, stars Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, Hailee Steinfield, Adam Levine and James Corden. Directed by John Carney ("Once", "Zonad"), it premiered at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival and, according to a statement, "is devoted to the beauty of music and power of chance encounter." Eric Kohn gave the film a B grade in his review, writing that it was "a fairly mannered treatment of an expressive medium.""An Bronntanas," directed by Tom Collins, revolves around a rescue crew who receives a distress call on a stormy night, and discovers a fishing boat with some very interesting cargo. The Weinstein Company can be very eager to change to change a film's title after its festival premiere -- sometimes with more necessity than others. "Can a Song Save Your Life?," however, is such a tooth-rottingly twee title that they were probably right to ditch it, even if "Begin Again" isn't the most inspired replacement. Anyway, that's what John Carney's musical dramedy will henceforth be known as, with the first official trailer for the summer release landing today. Carney, of course, made a splash seven years ago with the shoestring-budgeted Irish busker romance "Once," which recently made our list of Fox Searchlight's finest releases. For his follow-up, he's sticking with the theme of musicians' professional and personal troubles, though on a grander, glossier scale, starring Keira Knightley as an independent singer-songwriter in Manhattan who catches the eye (and ear) of Mark Ruffalo's down-and-out A&R man. Welcome to Miss American Idol, an exciting new reality series from Fox where gorgeous, talented women take the stage and sing for your votes — and then the ones with the skinniest legs advance to the finale.
Wait, that’s not an actual show? Then please someone tell me what I spent two hours watching tonight as a white-hot rage percolated through my circulatory system and turned me into the kind of cussing, fork-throwing (yes, I may have slammed cutlery into the hard wood floor), definitely-not-enjoying-myself monster you’d typically see on a show like Bad Girls Club or The Real Housewives of the Ninth Circle.

Fox hasn’t officially confirmed it, but sources close to American Idol are buzzing that Season 12 Top 4 week will be a two-theme kind of party: One-Hit Wonders and Contestant’s Choice.
The former — which topped an At&T “fan’s choice” vote — has the potential to be fantastic, as long as producers don’t try to force the contestants toward novelty hits or tired old songs that have been covered on Idol a million times before (and simply happen to qualify under the one-hit wonder header).

Lisa Whelchel, it's been real, but your stint on Survivor: Philippines is already disappointing. You've brought none of Blair Warner's flair to the proceedings, and you prove your Survivor cred is lacking with quotes like, "I can only play with the cards I've been given!" Guess who doesn't leave their fate up to the "cards" dealt by other players? People like Parvati Shallow. Russell Hantz. You know, Survivor super-champs.
Thus, it's time to think about which sitcom legends should join Survivor next. I love seeing TV stars of yore regain screentime, so this is a perfect opportunity to highlight other greats who 1) could slip by without the other contestants recognizing them, 2) are cooler than the anti-gay Whelchel, and 3) would be, uh, interesting. Here are our seven best options.
1. Dawn Wells (Gilligan's Island)

Note: Do not read on if you have not seen Season 3, Episodes 22 of Fox's "Glee," entitled "Goodbye."
My love/hate relationship with "Glee" this season has, at times, been stretched to its limits. Things got a little heavy for the glee club this year, so it seems appropriate that Season 3 would end on such an emotionally confusing note.
Unlike last week's "Nationals" episode, everything wasn't tied up into a neat little bow. Rachel, Finn and Kurt didn't ride off to New York on the backs of unicorns (sad, I know), and Mr. Schue didn't fall into a vat of boiling hair gel (even sadder, I know). But we did end up with a graduation episode that was heartfelt, comical and, yes, absolutely ridiculous.
Things didn't go as planned for the New York hopefuls. Not surprisingly, Finn was rejected from "Inside the Actor's Studio." However, the McKinley High quarterback had been...

If you have yet to watch Tuesday’s Glee season finale, hit the nearest exit. Everyone else, read on…
It’s fitting that Glee‘s third-season finale ended with the bittersweet ritual of high-school graduation, and not just because half of the show’s characters happened to be members of the William McKinley High senior class.
Indeed, with Glee‘s future in flux — early word is that the show will split focus between Lima, Oh, and the adventures of a number of characters in NYC in Season 4 (read this week’s Ask Ausiello for more details) — there’s a cloud...

Glee: Listen to the Songs from the Season 3 Finale "Graduation"
The Glee season 3 finale will be airing this week and, with it, comes graduation.
A lot of the Glee cast acknowledges the bittersweet sadness that came with filming the finale, which marks the last time for New Directions all together in the choir room.
Recently, Ryan Murphy addressed the concern of what would happen to the graduating characters in season 4. According to Vulture, "We had a meeting, and you know we've become like a family, and I said to them, 'Anybody who wants to stay on the show will stay on the show,'" he said. "They're all coming back. Anyone who is a regular is coming back. Everyone said yes." That doesn't necessarily mean that all of the characters will be back for the entire season, however. There's no concrete plan yet how long they will last on...

Music can make an average ad great. So why, Robin Hicks asks, is music the last thing a creative thinks about when writing an ad?
My favourite TV ad of the year so far is the Let Yourself Go spot for Kangaroo Island.
When it didn’t win Mumbrella’s Ad of the Month for March (it came third) I felt aggrieved for the agency that made it. But less so a week later when it emerged that the agency had paid celebrities to tweet nice things about its work.
Let Yourself Go is a stunning spot with lots of pretty images. But it would probably have had a similar effect on me if I’d watched a blank screen for 60 seconds.
John Baker of Adelaide ad agency Kwp!, which made the ad, told me that the music (Rise by Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder) “is 50% of the communication”. For me,...

The Avengers stars Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson are to reteam for a new movie musical.
The actress, who has already achieved critical success for her singing voice - thanks to an album of Tom Waits songs she released in 2008 and a 2009 collaboration with songwriter Pete Yorn, will play a struggling singer in Can a Song Save Your Life?
Ruffalo will play the producer who discovers Johansson's character in a New York bar and falls in love with her, according to ExclusiveMedia.
Grammy-winning New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander is reportedly part of the team creating original music for Johansson to sing in the film.

A 1999 demo promoting the ruinously expensive Shenmue (called “What’s Shenmue?”) featured an exclusive scene in which then company president Yukawa-san could be seen slumped at his desk, head in hands, surrounded by piles of unsold consoles (above). Deep down, Sega must have known the Dreamcast didn’t stand a chance even before they axed it two years later.
Even though the Sega Dreamcast enjoyed a relatively short lifespan (officially somewhere between its 1998 Japanese launch and late 2002 termination) and wasn’t supported at all by the most powerful publisher of the day (Electronic Arts) the well-loved machine still boasts an impressive library of titles.
Even extending this “best of” list, from the originally planned 10 to a whopping 30 games, has seen me leave out such gems as cult top-down shooter Ikaruga, well-regarded sports sim NHL 2K2, online deathmatch game Outtrigger, stylish BioWare-made shooter MDK2 and Street Fighter III: Double Impact (to...

Last week, Linkin Park reclaimed its place at the top of the Billboard album chart with the debut of A Thousand Suns. Their reign at the top of the sales world ended after one week, however, as the album made way for a number of high-profile albums that dropped last Tuesday. Did Selena Gomez and the Scene come out the big winner, or would Maroon 5 take the crown away from the men in LP?
In the end, the top spot went to the Zac Brown Band, who sold over 153,000 copies of their new album You Get What You Give (Maroon 5 finished a close second, while Gomez clocked in at number four). When You Get What You Give showed up on our copies of the chart this morning, more than a handful of the residents of the MTV Newsroom had a flashback to one of the greatest one-hit wonders...

It's sort of a weird day for birthdays today, as celebrations will be had for former *Nysnc member Lance Bass (he's 31) and Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt (who turns 38). But it's also the 40th birthday for Gregg Alexander, the pop genius behind the New Radicals. His one-man band remains one of the stranger chapters in rock history. His debut album Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too slipped onto the scene in the fall of 1998 and made an immediate impact with the smash single "You Get What You Give." The track was notable for its effervescent melody, sunshiney vibe and a coda that called out Marilyn Manson, Courtney Love, Hanson and Beck. Alexander also became instantly recognizable because of his bald head (which made him look a little like Lex Luthor) and his penchant for wearing bucket hats (which he does on the cover of Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too).

One of the great comeback tales of the past few years has been the one owned by Linda Perry, who rescued herself from one-hit-wonder obscurity to become a top collaborator with some of the biggest names in pop music (like Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys and Gwen Stefani). Kris Allen is currently working with super-producers David Hodges (Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry), Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse) and Claude Kelly (Leona Lewis, Akon), but here are five circa-’90s songwriters who Allen should draft into collaboration service.
