The Oldenburg Film Festival, Germany’s leading all-indie fest, unveiled highlights for its 30th-anniversary edition, including several world premieres featuring Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard and Mission : Impossible star Ving Rhames.
Uppercut, a boxing film featuring Mission: Impossible star Ving Rhames, will close the festival on September 17. Director Torsten Ruether remade his own, German-language, debut Leberhaken, which premiered in Oldenburg in 2021. The Million Dollar Baby-style story sees Rhames as a disillusioned former boxer who gets a shot at redemption when a young woman shows up at his gym, begging him to train her.
Spanish genre director F. Javier Gutierrez will bring his latest horror tale, The Wait, to Oldenburg this year. Gutiérrez’s 2008 debut Before the Fall, an end-of-the-world sci-fi thriller, was a cross-over hit, and his follow-up was the big-budget Rings (2017) for Paramount, the third entry in the Japanese-inspired horror saga. At the outset of “Promises,” protagonist Clémence Collombet is not an obvious fit for the talents of its leading lady. A former doctor turned mayor of an impoverished town on the outskirts of Paris, now reaching the end of her political career, she’s a decent, conscientious woman who has done a respectable job in office, but doesn’t seem blessed with great ambition or imagination.
If only because of who is playing her, however, we anticipate some additional layer of human complexity or complication to emerge in this merely respectable woman, and eventually we (and she) are rewarded. When Clémence receives an out-of-the-blue offer to become a government minister, her selfless principles are shed and her conscience suddenly plagued faster than you can say “Isabelle Huppert”; only then does writer-director Thomas Kruithof’s measured political drama begin to get going.
Even once it gets its heroine a bit dirty,...

Yesterday, the César Awards, France’s equivalent to the Oscars, were handed out. Taking the top prize, in somewhat of a surprise, was Les Misérables from Ladj Ly. Clearly a top contender for the award, it faced stiff competition from An Officer and a Spy, as well as especially from Portrait of a Lady on Fire. However, France’s submission to the Academy Awards had that upper hand, and in the end, it led the way here. Of course, what was most noteworthy was actress and nominee Adèle Haenel (from Portrait of a Lady on Fire) walked out of the ceremony when it was announced that Roman Polanski had won the Best Director prize for An Officer and a Spy. Her protest made waves throughout the industry, and even thought Polanski was not in attendance, it was a powerful statement, to be sure… Here now are the Cesar Award results: Best Film “La Belle Epoque,...

The stormiest and most beleaguered Cesar Awards ever took place in Paris on Friday, with “Les Miserables” being named 2019’s best French film while protesters lined the streets outside the Salle Pleyel protesting the nominations for Roman Polanski’s “J’accuse,” which is known as “An Officer and a Spy” outside France.
Despite the furor, Polanski won two Cesar awards, one for best director and another for adapted screenplay, which he shared with his co-writer Robert Harris. His film also won for its costumes.
It was Polanski’s fifth Cesar in the directing category, the most of any director. His previous awards were for “Tess,” “The Pianist,” “The Ghost Writer” and “Venus in Fur.”
Despite all the attention on Polanski, the Oscar-nominated “Les Miserables” was the big winner of the night, taking home four awards. In addition to the best-film prize, director Ladj Ly’s taut drama also won for most...

This French mashup of Dr Strangelove and The Hunt for Red October features lots of tense silence, sweaty faces and all the other tropes of submarine movies
There is some serious sub-on-sub action in this watchable undersea action thriller from the French cultural diplomat turned graphic novelist and film-maker Antonin Baudry, who mashes up Dr Strangelove, The Sum of All Fears and The Hunt for Red October. It features Mathieu Kassovitz and Reda Kateb as cucumber-cool nuclear submarine commanders, Omar Sy as the tough second-in-command, and François Civil as Chanteraide, a savant-genius “acoustic warfare analyst” – an earphone-wearing military geek with super-hearing who can tell from tiny bleeps and eerie echoes in the vast oceanic depths what kind of sub they’re facing and where it is.

"His organization responds to acute needs." Madman Films out of Australia has debuted an official English-subtitled trailer for the acclaimed, beloved French drama (originally) called The Specials. Apparently for the Australian release they've retitled it to The Extraordinary, which sort of still works I guess, but okay whatever. No need for a new name. This is from the same two talented French filmmakers who made The Intouchables, and this time they tell the story of two based-on-real-people social support caregivers for autistic children and teens. Vincent Cassel and Reda Kateb star as two of the most caring, loving guys you'll ever meet - as Bruno and Malik. The full cast also includes Hélène Vincent, Bryan Mialoundama. Alban Ivanov, Benjamin Lesieur, Marco Locatelli, and Catherine Mouchet. It's a wonderful film. I saw it at the San Sebastian Film Festival and loved everything about it - read my glowing review. It truly is a "special", warm,...

Haut et Court TV is re-teaming with “Possessions” showrunner Shahar Magen and co-writer Valérie Zenatti on “Labor,” an international war mystery series.
“Labor” takes place during the Suez War in 1956 and brings together Israeli, French and British soldiers. Following a supernatural event, they have to deal with strange physical changes that will affect future generations and change masculinity as we know it today.
In line with the series’ plot and characters, “Labor” will shoot in Hebrew, French and English. The Suez War, also known as the second Arab–Israeli war, involved Egypt, Israel, the U.K. and France.
Haut et Court TV is currently developing “Labor” and will soon start talks with potential international partners. Israeli channel Hot is on board to co-develop. One of Israel’s top showrunners, Magen previously delivered “Sirens,” a hit fantasy thriller set in the resort town of Eilat.

Haut et Court TV, the Paris-based production company behind “The Young Pope” and the original series “The Returned,” is tapping into Israel’s vibrant talent pool to partner on ambitious series, including “Possessions” and “Fertile Crescent,” which are both currently shooting.

Directed by Oded Ruskin (“False Flag”), the series centers on a seemingly picture-perfect French family shattered by the death of their estranged daughter in a suicide bombing in Jerusalem. Photo: Courtesy of Cannes Film Festival The new film by the makers of Samba and C’est La Vie, Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, entitled The Specials, will close this year’s 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival on 25 May following the awards ceremony.
The performance will be called the “Last Screening” with a nod to Peter Bogdanovich’s The Last Picture Show which in French was known as “la Dernière Séance.”
The Specials, or Hors Normes in French, stars Vincent Cassel and Reda Kateb. The festival organisers say they want to re-establish the last show as an occasion worth remembering such as the year that Steven Spielberg’s Et filled the slot.
Frequently the final screening has been a damp squib, especially after the fanfare of the prizes showcase.

Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano’s new film “The Specials” will close this month’s Cannes Film Festival, organizers announced on Monday.
The film, a social comedy starring Vincent Cassel and Reda Kateb and a cast of nonprofessional actors and teens with autism, will play following the festival’s May 25 awards ceremony in what the festival now bills as Last Screening. Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu is leading this year’s jury of competition titles.
“The Specials,” which was submitted at the last minute to the selection committee, evokes social and contemporary issues, where the collective world is once again at the heart of everything: social workers, volunteers, health professionals all striving to take care of teens with autism.
“This film is more than contemporary and carries great promises for the future,” festival general delegate Thierry Frémaux said in a statement.

The Specials, the latest feature from The Intouchables filmmaking duo Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, has been set to close out the 72nd Cannes Film Festival — just don’t call it the “Closing Film.” Cannes organizers said today that they’re doing away with the distinction, preferring to brand the final pic of the Riviera shindig as the “Last Screening.” There are a couple of pop culture winks in the switch: In French, the final movie will henceforth officially be referred to as “La Dernière Séance” which is the local title of Peter Bogdanovich’s 1971 Oscar winner The Last Picture Show, as well as a tune by French actor/singer Eddy Mitchell.

Explaining the name change, the festival said: “By renaming the closing film the ’last screening’, the Festival de Cannes wishes to reconnect with its tradition of final great screenings.”

Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano’s “The Specials,” a social comedy with Vincent Cassel and Reda Kateb, is set to close the 72nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The film will screen May 25 during the festival’s closing ceremony.
Produced and distributed by Gaumont, “The Specials” is the latest film from Nakache and Toledano, the French directing duo behind the hit “Intouchables.” Their new movie is an uplifting comedy about the true story of Stephane Benhamou and Daoud Tatou, two friends from different religious faiths who, 20 years ago, created a pair of nonprofit organizations for children with severe autism.
Cannes said the film “acutely evokes social and contemporary issues, where the collective world is once again at the heart of everything: social workers, volunteers, health professionals all striving to take care of autistic teens.”
The festival said that the film had been submitted for consideration “at the last minute.
