"It's not only things out there in the woods that could hurt you." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an adventure series from Sweden titled Ronja the Robber's Daughter, based on the book written by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren (creator of Pippi Longstocking). The live-action adaptation is a 6 episode limited series for Netflix, debuting in two parts starting this spring. Ronja the Robber’s Daughter follows the adventures of a spirited and rebellious girl born into a gang of robbers in a medieval Scandinavian castle. As Ronja grows up, she discovers the magical, but dangerous forest with its strange and mysterious creatures. Yet she feels more at home in the forest than behind the walls of the huge castle. Leon Vitali, an actor in Barry Lyndon who went on to become director Stanley Kubrick’s right-hand man, died Friday in Los Angeles at age 74. His family confirmed his death to Associated Press, but no cause was given.
“Leon was a special and lovely man driven by his curiosity, who spread love and warmth wherever he went,” his children said in a statement provided by his daughter, Masha Vitali. “He will be remembered with love and be hugely missed by the many people he touched.”
Vitali was profiled in the 2017 documentary Filmworker, which spotlighted his contributions to Kubrick’ work. Filmmaker Tony Zierra’s noted that Vitali did everything from casting and coaching actors to overseeing restorations.
His duties went so far as to once setting up a video monitor so that Kubrick could keep an eye on his dying cat.

Nordic Entertainment Group (Nent Group), Scandinavia’s leading streaming company, has come on board “Orca” (working title), a Swedish drama dealing with social distancing created, written and directed by Josephine Bornebusch (“Love Me”) .
The series, which started to film this week, is headlined by Swedish stars, including Johan Rheborg (“Partisan”), Gustav Lindh (“Love Me”), Alba August (“The Perfect Patient”), Peter Andersson (“Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit”) and Vera Vitali (“Conspiracy of Silence”), as well as Bornebusch. The show will premiere exclusively across the Nordics on Nent Group’s Viaplay streaming service in the fall.
The experimental drama sees its protagonists communicating with one another primarily through their phones and screens; and they are filming their scenes one at a time with a minimal crew present, said Nent Group. “Orca” is being produced by Sofie Palage at Warner Bros. "The kids have no confidence in me. I know nothing about soccer." Cohen Media Group has released the official Us trailer for a Swedish drama called Britt-Marie Was Here, an adaptation of the bestselling novel by Fredrik Backman ("A Man Called Ove"). This premiered at the Göteborg Film Festival earlier this year. Directed by Swedish actress / filmmaker Tuva Novotny, the film tells the story of a woman who leaves her husband after 40 years to find some new meaning in life. Backman's "particular brand of witty humor and inspiring themes of self-discovery have effectively been captured," with a stand-out lead performance by Pernilla August in the main role. It also stars Peter Haber, Malin Levanon, Vera Vitali, Olle Sarri, Mahmut Suvakci, Lancelot Ncube, and Anders Mossling. This looks fun! Even if you're not someone who is leaving their marriage after 40 years, there's still some charming entertainment to be found in here.

In Anna Odell’s much-anticipated ”X&Y,” which world premieres as the opening film at the Stockholm Film Festival, the director also plays the leading role alongside Mikael Persbrandt, one of Sweden’s most renowned actors. Odell spoke to Variety about the film.
Odell is one of Sweden’s best-known contemporary artists and, since her directorial feature debut – “The Reunion” in 2013 – also a sought after name in Swedish cinema. The film won the top prize in Critics’ Week at the Venice Film Festival, and two Guldbagge Awards, Sweden’s top movie honor, for film and screenplay. In “The Reunion,” Odell drew inspiration from her own life as someone with mental health issues, in order to raise questions about bullying, school hierarchies and power structures in society.

Have you ever wondered what are the films that inspire the next generation of visionary filmmakers? As part of our monthly Ioncinephile profile, we ask the filmmaker (in this case, Norwegian filmmaker Eskil Vogt) to identify their all time top ten favorite films. Worth noting: this was a last minute request on my part, meaning the Scandi helmer did not have much time to reflect on film history in it’s totality — but Eskil was a great sport and kindly obliged. Vogt’s Blind receives its NYC release on September 4th via the Kim Stim folks and receives its VOD release via Fandor. Here is his top ten as of September 2nd, 2015.

If you've been following us for any amount of time, you'll know we're big fans of Joachim Trier's "Reprise" and "Oslo, August 31st." And a big part of the success of those films is due to Eskil Vogt, so when we heard he was making his feature directorial debut with "Blind," we were pretty excited. We were even happier to learn that it was a "compelling, clever and surprisingly warm" tale that follows the intersection between a blind woman named Ingrid (Ellen Dorrit Petersen), a lonely, porn-obsessed man (Marius Kolbenstvedt), and a single mother (Vera Vitali). And while it seems this trailer has been kicking around for a while, it only crossed our path now and it's reminder that, if anything, someone needs to pick up this movie for U.S. distribution. Chatting with Vogt earlier this year at the Goteborg International Film Festival, he shared what he learned...

Cold Cuts: Östlund Examines Behavior Unawares in Astute Sophomore Feature
While Ruben Östlund’s 2004 feature debut The Guitar Mongoloid first played with examinations of human behaviors, the director would further hone this angle more succinctly with his 2008 sophomore film, Involuntary. Premiering in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, it would march forward through a resiliently delayed festival circuit before last reaching theatrical release in the UK (and never awarded Us distribution). Again shuffling through various characters free of any discernable narrative, Östlund focuses on more uncomfortable behavioral patterns, perhaps more slightly defined by humans left victim to the consequences of their inability to help themselves or a dogged insistence on ignoring clearly defined social mores.
Earlier comparisons of Östlund to titles from Roy Andersson like You, the Living (2007) and Songs from the Second Floor (2002) seem more justified with the dark streaks of humor laced throughout Involuntary. But he’s also reminiscent...

White People
Director: Lisa Aschan // Writer: Lisa Aschan
After nabbing several awards for her 2011 debut She Monkeys (see trailer below), Swedish director Lisa Aschan was set to direct a horror movie called The Deposit. But she gave back the funding she received from the Stockholm International Film Festival to make White People, which follows a group of six people as they fight for survival after being locked away. Considering the quality of Aschan’s first feature, plus the presence of veteran actress Pernilla August, this earns a place on our list.
Cast: Pernilla August, Vera Vitali, and Issaka Sawadogo
Producer: Garagefilm International’s Anna-Maria Kantarius (Something Must Break)
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available.
Release Date: We’re thinking this will pop up at the Berlin Film Festival, which is where She Monkeys migrated to after playing Goteburg.

Burkinabé thespian Issaka Sawadogo is a name that continues to pop up on this site, and one that you really should become familiar with, as I think it's only a matter of time before Hollywood comes calling. Although, whether he'll accept is another story altogether. The actor has signed up to star in award-winning Swedish director Lisa Aschan's second feature, titled White People. The film, which is a follow-up to Aschan's feature directorial debut (She Monkeys), co-stars Pernilla August and Vera Vitali in a film that follows a group of 6 people as they fight to stay alive after being locked away together. Thanks to everyone who commented on or read our Sundance coverage! We braved Park City's confounding bus system for you, you know. (If you appreciated it why not like us on Facebook and follow Michael and Glenn and I on twitter?) I had attended Sundance twice before. Once before I was a writer during college and once officially as press in 2010 when the highlight was dancing with Parker Posey at a party! But this felt like a first time again, mostly because I brought a team so we did it up right. Well, mostly right. 75% right. We definitely didn't attend enough parties but there's always next year if -- no, I can't even think about leaving NYC again any time soon. I've woken up in my own cozy bed the past few mornings for the first time in two weeks (a quick La trip was before Sundance, remember) and it feels great.

‘Whiplash’: Sundance Film Festival Awards’ rare double winner (photo: Miles Teller in ‘Whiplash’) Directed by Damien Chazelle — and acquired for domestic distribution by Sony Pictures Classics — Whiplash won the 2014 Sundance Film Festival U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the U.S. Dramatic Audience Award. The story of a young, ambitious 19-year-old drummer (played by 26-year-old Miles Teller) under the tutelage of a ruthless teacher (J.K. Simmons), Whiplash also features Melissa Benoist, Paul Reiser, Austin Stowell, Nate Lang, Chris Mulkey, and Damon Gupton. Whiplash‘s double Sundance Film Festival win is quite rare. Previous such instances in Sundance’s three-decade history include Tony Bui’s Three Seasons in 1999, Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland’s Quinceañera in 2006, Lee Daniels’ Precious in 2009, and Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station last year. Of these, Precious is — somewhat surprisingly — the only Sundance double winner to have succeeded both at the domestic box office and during awards season,...

Title: Blind Director: Eskil Vogt Starring: Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Henrik Rafaelsen, Vera Vitali, Marius Kolbenstvedt Making a film about blindness is not an easy task. Some have tried, but conveying the fact that someone cannot see via a primarily visual medium is challenging. In order to be effective, a film must manage to illustrate the lack of sight and images with some creative combination of those elements and the absence of those elements. Blind, from Norwegian director Eskil Vogt, manages to do so very convincingly, presenting its main character’s life on screen in a powerful and deeply relatable fashion. Blind is actually the story of three protagonists. Ingrid (Ellin Dorrit [ Read More ]

Reilly; Listen Up Philip, with Jason Schwartzman and Elisabeth Moss; Whiplash, starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons; and many, many more.

Sundance Institute announced today the films selected for the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions and the out-of-competition section of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.
Robert Redford, President & Founder of Sundance Institute said, “That the Festival has evolved and grown as it has over the past 30 years is a credit to both our audiences and our artists, who continue to find ways to take risks and open our minds to the power of story. This year’s films and artists promise to do the same.”

It’s among the two sections that we usually don’t put much focus on (yes, we love subtitles, but we’re more concerned, naturally more inclined to cover the deluge of American Indie film offerings) but among the dozen film selections in the World Cinema Dramatic Comp section we find the latest from Argentinean director Natalia Smirnoff (she gave us the Berlin Film Fest winner The Puzzle) who returns with Lock Charmer, we find the highly anticipated film from Hong Khaou (Lilting) and a title which we start speculating on last year in Stuart Murdoch’s God Help the Girl which stars Emily Browning, Olly Alexander and Hannah Murray (see pic above). Also worth the mention is the directing debut from writer Eskil Vogt – who co-wrote Reprise and Oslo, August 31st for Joachim Trier. Here are the dozen selected.

Fishing Without Nets looks to tell a story similar to that of Captain Phillips, only this time from the Somali side of things; God's Pocket is "Mad Men" star John Slattery's writing and directorial debut and he's lined up an impressive cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Richard Jenkins,...
