Three months ago, Doha’s new Downtown Msheireb district was the throbbing heart of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar as one of its main fan zones.
Quiz any local on the street or in its cafes and shops about what it was like, and their faces light up as they recount how packed it was and the magical atmosphere.
Billed as the world’s first sustainable downtown regeneration project, the pedestrianized neighborhood is now acting as the backdrop to the Doha Film Institute’s annual Qumra talent incubator, alongside the I.M. Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art (Mia).
The event, which kicked off on Friday, aims to hothouse 44 film and series projects in various formats and stages of production. All the projects are recipients of the Dfi’s generous grant program

Exclusive: Love Is Strange, the new film by Ira Sachs which made its premiere last night at Eccles and got a rousing response including standing ovations for Alfred Molina and John Lithgow, has made a deal for French distribution with Pretty Pictures in a six-figure deal. The pic is in play for a domestic deal at well. Pretty Pictures’ Aranka Matits called the film “one of the best American independents we have seen in a long time. We were immediately taken by Ira Sachs’ elegant and poignant portrayal of human relationships. The performances are top-notch, with John Lithgow and Alfred Molina delivering understated excellence.” Fortissimo’s Matits and Nicole Mackey made the deal. Pretty Pictures’s recent releases of fest-centric films includes Winter’s Bone, Meeks Cutoff, Compliance and Detachment, and Wadjda. Next up are Dancing In Jaffa and the Jessica Chastain-starrer Miss Julie. Wme Global is repping domestic rights.

Independent Film Week kicked off on Sunday at Lincoln Center and co-writer/co-producer of Brooklyn Flee, Devon Kirkpatrick, and I sat in a room full of Emerging Narratives filmmakers nervously awaiting our moment to practice pitch our scripts in front of an esteemed industry panel. We spent two hours the day before sketching out our thoughts over bad guacamole and happy hour Chardonnay, attempting to figure out what makes a good two minute pitch.
After a few hours, Devon and I parted ways needing to take a moment to center ourselves before a hectic week. I went home to fall asleep after ten minutes of the movie Singles and eating takeout in my pajamas and Devon was probably cuddling with her dog or something.
