Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul marveled at Steve Martin’s ability to perform their rapid-fire song in Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building. Martin’s character, Charles-Haden Savage, struggles with “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It” until episode 8 of the season. Unlike Savage, though, Martin nailed it in a tight two-hour time window.
“He’s an incredible musician so it sort of tracks,” Paul said during a conversation at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event, where Pasek and Paul performed the patter song from the hit Hulu series’ fictional musical Death Rattle Dazzle.
Even though they wrote “Pickwick Triplets,” the pair acknowledge the difficulty.
“It is pretty difficult to sing a patter song,” Pasek said. “We have tried to do it and failed many times.”

“There was still so much mystery and tension, and I found myself scoring more than I ever scored before in the show with all the new characters,” reveals Siddhartha Khosla. The Emmy-nominated composer returned for Season 3 of “Only Murders in the Building” to expand the sonic identity of Hulu’s comedic murder mystery. “On a show like this, we don’t have tons of time, so we get the cuts, score them, they’re in,” remarks Khosla, “And especially since the score is sort of baked into the identity of the show, the themes and the ideas have to be there sort of early on.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“I’m a singer songwriter before I was ever a composer for TV and film. So I think of everything like these little songs,” says Khosla of his approach to composing. He constructs a theme for each character, complete...

Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are one step away from achieving Egot status, needing only an Emmy to complete the prestigious quartet of entertainment honors. The duo has submitted “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” from Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” for outstanding music and lyrics at this year’s Emmys. If they are nominated and win at the September ceremony, Pasek and Paul will become the 20th and 21st Egot recipients, joining the ranks of legends Richard Rodgers, Marvin Hamlisch and Elton John.
The song, co-written with celebrated composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, is performed by Steve Martin in the show’s eighth episode, “Sitzprobe,” helmed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini. “It was a song that called out for as much writing and as many words as possible,” reveals Marc Shaiman of the epic tongue twister tune “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” This patter song at the heart of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 proved so complex that the initial songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul felt compelled to recruit another writing duo, Shaiman and Scott Wittman, to help with the intricate rhymes. “It really was one of those more-is-more kind of songs,” admits Paul, “and so we all had a blast.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
According to Pasek, the incredible “ambition” of this season spurred him and Paul to reach out to another writing team. “It felt like to us, what an amazing opportunity to get to work with people that we love and bring in a couple of other voices to help shape a score,...

Meryl Streep is opening up about some of the fears she had going into season three of Only Murders in the Building, particularly when it came to her big musical number.
Streep joined Steve Martin, Martin Short, Selena Gomez, showrunner John Hoffman and songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul for a For Your Consideration event on the Paramount lot on Friday night, with a conversation moderated by co-star Jane Lynch. The group is currently shooting season four of the series, which is largely set in Los Angeles, on the lot.
Streep told the crowd how she called Martin to ask to appear on the show, after having had a “really fun” time working with him on 2009’s It’s Complicated.
“I’m sorry, can you believe that Meryl Streep asked to be on this show? I could die,” Gomez exclaimed, as Streep responded, “Doesn’t everybody want to be on this show?...

Just weeks ago, Sir Elton John became the 19th entertainer to win the highly desirable Egot by claiming his first ever Emmy Award. And now, which person is the most likely to be the 20th Egot later this year, in 2025 or beyond? Here is a summary of the 80 people who have the best chance right now.
The most likely duo could be composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (actually meaning a 20th and 21st Egot if they win). They are producers and songwriters for the third season of “Only Murders in the Building,” so they will have a couple of opportunities in September at the Emmys. They first won an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy.
For the 2024 Grammys, nobody is nominated who could become an Egot, so the next possible chance would be 2025. There are a total of 25 people who have won everything needed except a Grammy. They are actress Ellen Burstyn,...

Two of the most joyous cinematic moments of the year came when unlikely characters raised their voices in song. In “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” Jack Black brought the house down as Bowser with his plaintive plea to “Peaches.” And Ryan Gosling stole the show in “Barbie” with his declaration of independence, “I’m Just Ken.” Sure, both tones hit our collective funny bones but they also get to our hearts.
“Peaches” is a power ballad sung by Bowser at the piano in his lair. He confesses his love for Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and reveals the motives behind his villainous activity — “everything I do, I do it for you” vibes. He is desperate to win the Princess’ hand in marriage because he loves her. Black’s voice is perfect for the song as his passion increases into a mad crescendo. It’s easily the best and most memorable part of the movie.

Disney has unveiled a first look photo for its live-action Snow White movie, which this afternoon pushed back its release date from March 22, 2024 to March 21, 2025, amidst the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

In season three of Only Murders in the Building, Broadway director Oliver Putnam, played by Martin Short, lands on the idea of turning his murder mystery play Death Rattle into a musical after the shocking death of his leading man.
The musical, in which a detective investigates the murder of a woman in a lighthouse that was only witnessed by her infant triplets, is meant to salvage the show, and his career. But it also acts as a motif for the rest of season, wherein the Broadway numbers performed by cast further the plot of the actual murder mystery being solved by Short, Selena Gomez and Steve Martin, the trio at the center of the series.
And so to make the already over-the-top musical feel as real as possible, the Only Murders in the Building writing team called on the Tony- and Oscar-winning songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul,...

It’s only Wednesday, but it’s already been a long week/month/year, hasn’t it? The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are still raging. Traffic is as bad as ever. Every appointment you try to make results in a dropped call or “She can see you in her office in late November” response.
Let’s face it: you need a mental health break like nobody’s business. And we have just what you’re looking for right here: Steve Martin (Charles-Haden Savage) performing the rousing new “Only Murders in the Building” tune “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?”, a song written specifically for the show. It’s written by Benji Pasek & Justin Paul (“La La Land,” “Dear Evan Hansen” and “The Greatest Showman”), the Emmy and Tony-winning songwriter/composer Marc Shaiman (“Hairspray”) and Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award-winning songwriter Scott Wittman (“Hairspray”). In Tuesday’s new episode of “Only Murders in the Building,” audiences learned that Loretta (Meryl Streep) is the biological mother of murder victim Ben Glenroy’s adopted brother Dickie (Jeremy Shamos). The Hulu comedy’s showrunner, John Hoffman, credited writer Elaine Coe for Season 3’s biggest twist yet.
“It was an early pitch that helped us frame the entire season. We had Meryl Streep in our show, and we knew we needed to do some deep diving and give her something with heft, with mystery around her, and that dimensionalized that character,” he told TheWrap in an interview facilitated through his personal publicist and conducted in accordance with WGA guidelines. “We reframe Loretta’s story and how she came to even be in this play, and how her whole life was leading up to it, which...

Meryl Streep has captured the hearts of the last remaining humans unaware of her enchanting charm with her performance of “Look for the Light” from the latest episode of Only Murders in the Building Season 3.
In the newly-released clip, Streep’s long-suffering actress Loretta reveals her powerful musical stage chops in front of the show’s familiar residents of The Arconia including Martin Short’s normally fickle Oliver and Steve Martin’s noticeably befuddled Charles. Without giving away too many plot details, Streep sings the lullaby-tinged number with the conviction of an actress whose career is on the line, yet she’s clearly struck a chord with the audience as she’s joined mid-song by fellow Season 3 recurring cast-member and real-life Broadway star Ashley Park. Watch the full solo showcase-turned-duet below.

“Only Murders in the Building” leveraged the full talents of Meryl Streep in Season 3, including her singing abilities. Episode 3 closed out with a powerful ballad, titled “Look for the Light,” performed by Streep and Ashley Park that was written for the show by Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Sara Bareilles.
Showrunner John Hoffman told TheWrap that Streep immediately fell in love with the song when she first heard it over Zoom.
“I’ll never forget playing her Sara Bareilles singing that song, with Justin Paul and Benj Pasek having just composed it,” Hoffman recalled. “My favorite moment was she was listening, and Sara’s just weaving this beautiful melody and the lyrics together and then she hits this line ‘My love is a lighthouse. So darling, my darling, look for the light.’ I watch Meryl just go ‘Oh’ and she left the screen and I thought ‘Ok, we’re in a good place here.

Three months from now, the Weeknd might just have an Emmy to place alongside his four Grammys and his Oscar nomination.
That’s because he joins a dozen other music superstars — including Dolly Parton, Common, Ryan Tedder, “Weird Al” Yankovic and Meshell Ndegeocello — who have entered work in this year’s Emmy competition.
Voting began yesterday in the seven music categories. Approximately 550 members of the Academy’s music branch will cast ballots, although viewing the hundreds of entries before voting ends on June 26 is an impossible task, Academy officials privately concede.
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is among the 19 entries in the Music Direction category. He submitted “The Weeknd Live at Sofi Stadium,” an HBO special that aired in February. If nominated, he’s likely to be up against such past winners as Adam Blackstone and Rickey Minor (“The Oscars”).

Ryan Reynolds Celebrates Rob McElhenney’s Birthday By Teaching Us All How to Pronounce His Last Name
Ryan Reynolds pulled out every possible stop he could think of to celebrate his buddy Rob McElhenney’s birthday Friday, April 14 — though the real gift was teaching us all how to properly pronounce the actor’s last name.

Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” has a strong possibility to win two Oscars on Sunday night despite it only receiving three bids, all in technical categories. What Kyle Smith in the Wall Street Journal called “one of the year’s richest and most ambitious films” is up for Academy Award nominations in Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Score. Although it’s not a favorite to win for its costumes — “Elvis” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” have better shots there, per Gold Derby odds — it can absolutely win both production design and score. Here are the five reasons “Babylon” will win two Oscars on March 12.
1. Academy voters will want to reward the film somewhere.
Although some of the response to the Paramount Pictures film was mixed, there’s been a lot of passion for “Babylon” in the months since its release. If Oscar voters want to reward a film...

Every year, there are some truly exceptional songs featured in motion pictures.
Disney and Bond films are almost always guaranteed nominations from the Academy in the Best Original Song category, often winning (as "No Time To Die" did last year).
However, there are plenty of songs that have stood the test of time that you may not even know were Oscar-nominated -- or even that they were originally from a film!
Plenty of nominated songs have gone on to outlast tthe films they came from.
Here's a list to remind you how random, enduring, and inclusive the Best Original Song category has been over the decades.
"9 to 5" - 9 to 5 (1980)
Dolly Parton's first Academy Award nomination was for her upbeat ode to the working woman from the film of the same name.
That year, Best Original Song was a tough category, with "Fame" from Fame taking the prize.
Though Parton lost the Oscar,...

Netflix’s February rotation has much more to offer than just romance movies, though if you’re looking to extend the Valentine’s Day mood, several options like the Reese Witherspoon rom-com “Your Place Or Mine” from “The Devil Wears Prada” scribe Aline Brosh McKenna will warm your heart. “La La Land” could also satisfy the longing for a love story, but self-love is the most important, and “Eat, Pray, Love” can help you with that.
For those not feeling the love, “Lyle Lyle, Crocodile” promises fun for the whole family with the help of music from “La La Land” composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Shawn Mendes, who voices a CGI crocodile who only expresses himself through song, also contributed an original song to the film.
Here are the best seven new movies to stream on Netflix in February 2023.
