- Pioneering drummer and co-founder of the Afrobeat genre. He was the drummer and musical director of Fela Kuti's band Africa '70 in the 1960-70s.
- He taught himself to play drums when he was 18, listening to American jazz drummers Art Blakey and Max Roach.
- Survived by his wife, three sons, four children from an earlier relationship in Nigeria, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
