Licorice Pizza star Cooper Hoffman and HBO Industry actor David Jonsson are currently in the mix to headline Francis Lawrence’s take on Stephen King’s The Long Walk for Lionsgate.
Jt Mollner (Outlaws and Angels) is writing the screenplay and will produce alongside Vertigo’s Roy Lee.
Deadline first reported that the big screen take of the 1979, King pseudonym penned Richard Bachman, novel was set up at New Line with André Øvredal directing from James Vanderbilt’s script. The rights lapsed in the summer of 2022, but also let’s not forget that New Line couldn’t pull off King’s Salem’s Lot, a movie shot for cinemas, but jettisoned to Max.
The Long Walk takes place in the future in which 100 teenage boys embark on an annual competition known as “The Long Walk.” The rules are simple: maintain a speed above 4 miles per hour. Receive three warnings in...

Bob Yari’s startup mini-major Magenta Light Studios has found its first in-house film production in “Summerhouse,” a period drama set against the anxiety of the Vietnam War.
“Bombshell” and “Halloween” star Malcolm McDowell will lead the project with Jacob Ward, an up-and-comer who made his debut in Ray Romano’s 2022 film “Somewhere in Queens.” Ed Kaplan (“2 Graves in the Desert”) will write the script and direct, with Shelly Jonson as director of photography.
Production will begin in Connecticut this month. Moonstone Entertainment will represent the international sales, previewing for buyers out of Cannes’ Marche du Film.
“Summerhouse” follows college grad Ned Stern (Ward) awaiting his draft into the Vietnam War. Ned spends his last summer of freedom caring for a belligerent wealthy alcoholic man (McDowell) at his lakeside mansion, only to find himself falling in love with a free-spirited and wild girl while questioning his commitment to his country.

Earlier this week, we heard that Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is the latest director to be attached to helm an adaptation of The Long Walk, a Stephen King novel that was published under the Richard Bachman pen name back in 1979. Now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that The Long Walk is set up at Lionsgate, with Lawrence in “final talks” to direct. So this will be a continuation of the working relationship Lionsgate and Lawrence have had on the Hunger Game films.
Joe Drake of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group provided the following statement: “When you have enjoyed the strong creative collaboration and success that we have had working with Francis, you want to repeat that experience as much as possible.

The rights to Stephen King’s 1979 novel, The Long Walk, have been acquired by Lionsgate, and according to new reports, the project is set to be adapted into a film directed by Francis Lawrence.
Previously, a movie based on The Long Walk was in development by New Line Cinema with André Øvredal attached to direct, but after the rights lapsed in the summer of 2022, work on the project was abandoned. Now, Lionsgate has picked up the dystopian story, and will bring it to life, with Lawrence directing and producing a script by Jt Mollner (Outlaws and Angels). Roy Lee (2017’s It) will produce as well.
Lawrence is fresh on the heels of his latest release: the latest Hunger Games film, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which debuted earlier this month and has grossed north of $200 million so far. In a statement, Joe Drake, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group,...

The project had previously been set up at New Line, but THR reports that Stephen King’s The Long Walk has a new home at Lionsgate, with Lawrence in “final talks” to direct.
Additionally, they report that Jt Mollner (Strange Darling) will write the script.
THR also notes that Roy Lee (It) is on board to produce the upcoming movie.

The Long Walk has new spring in its step as Lionsgate is now behind a big-screen adaptation of the Stephen King book.
Lionsgate has picked up the rights to the 1979 dystopian novel, with Francis Lawrence in final talks to direct. Jt Mollner will pen the script. The move puts Lawrence back in business with Lionsgate, for whom he directed The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which is currently in theaters and has grossed more than $200 million globally.
Roy Lee is producing Long Walk with Lawrence.
New Line was previously developing the project with director André Øvredal and a script from James Vanderbilt before the rights lapsed in the summer of 2022. Now Lionsgate will begin anew with its own take.

Bill Block is out as CEO of Miramax.
The executive and film producer was hired in 2017. Block’s contract expired this week and was not renewed, sources said. He’s been rumored to be out for months. A representative for Miramax had no immediate comment on the matter.
Insiders said new leadership was necessary at Miramax given that Paramount Global, which owns a 49% stake in Miramax, is grappling with a volatile marketplace. Insiders believe the unit behind films like “Pulp Fiction,” “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” and “Shakespeare in Love” should be mining its own intellectual property for new projects, not acquiring finished films or snapping up distribution rights. Block is not the person to take them in that direction, as evidenced by his canning.

The synopsis for Strange Darling really says it all. Written and directed by Jt Mollner the mysterious thriller is “one day in the twisted love life of a serial killer”. Starring Willa Fitzgerald (The Goldfinch) and Kyle Gallner, who genre fans will no doubt recognize from Smile and Jennifer’s Body (just to name a few) Strange Darling is a cat-and-mouse story set over a short period of time, presented in a jumbled fashion like Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill (or any other Quentin Tarantino movie for that matter).
Honestly, the less you know about this one going in, the better. It does have a few cards hidden up its sleeve but the whole bloody affair really hinges on the ever-surprising performances of its two leads. Kyle Gallner is electric in pretty much everything you’ve seen him in and he’s just as engaging a performer here, but Willa...

Serial-killer movies are a dime a dozen these days, with the true-crime industrial complex exploiting the ill-deeds sprees of increasingly obscure murderers to keep up with audience demand. Anyone wary of the genre might balk at the idea of “Strange Darling,” a cat-and-mouse drama about the tail end of a murder spree, but to do so would be to miss out on an exemplar of the form. Writer-director Jt Mollner flips the script on this tired genre, crafting the cleverest thriller of its kind in a while with a mighty assist from a pair of killer performances by co-leads Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. Best experienced with as little foreknowledge as possible, “Strange Darling” demands a bit of patience, but it also rewards it.

After a brief prologue that promises – both via text and voiceover – a dramatization of the true story of the final killings of the most unique American serial killer of the 21st century, we are treated to a mesmerizing opening titles sequence set to a rendition of "Love Hurts," featuring a woman (Willa Fitzgerald) running through the woods in red scrubs. The next chapter introduces us to the man chasing her – flannel clad, aviators wearing, moustache rocking Kyle Gallner, whose character is referred to in the credits as The Demon. Strange Darling is the second feature by the writer/ director Jt Mollner, following Outlaws and Angels (2016), a revisionist take on western. It stands to reason to suggest that Strange Darling somewhat plays...

There’s a scene in Jt Mollner’s Strange Darling where Ed Begley Jr. makes breakfast. He chars sausages, unsheathes and melts a stick of yellow butter, then cracks a messload of eggs and leaves them to bubble while pouring out thick globs of pancake batter in a second pan. He layers the cakes with the eggs and encased pork meat and yet more butter before drowning the whole thing in whipped cream that promptly starts to liquefy. He places the mess in front of his wife (Barbara Hershey), who comically offsets the caloric mound by placing a single, wimpy red strawberry on top. This scene is almost certainly unintentionally illustrative of Moller’s approach to his sophomore feature: a twisty cat and mouse thriller so overstuffed with delicious elements that it’s constantly on the verge of becoming too much of a good thing.

“Do you have any idea the kind of risks a woman like me takes every time she decides to have a little bit of fun?” So says our female protagonist in writer/director Jt Mollner‘s Strange Darling, a film that dares us to question the roles men and women are expected to play. Are women just prudes who don’t love casual sex? Are men just rapist serial killers waiting for their next mark? What exactly are the boundaries of consent? Strange Darling asks these questions, making for a smarter-than-you’d-expect entry into the cat and mouse thriller genre.

The open road is a terrifying place for a young woman in the first look at “Strange Darling,” a horror-thriller from director J.T. Mollner set to premiere at this week’s Fantastic Fest.
Described as “one day in the twisted love life of a serial killer,” the project stars Willa Fitzgerald (Amazon’s “Reacher”) and Kyle Gallner. Fitzgerald, known only in the film as “The Lady,” barrels down a highway in a red Ford Pinto in a clip exclusive to Variety, escaping Gallner’s mad pursuit. After shooting out her back windshield and trying to mow her down with a pickup truck, the cat-and-mouse game moves on foot through the wilderness.
“This film was a sort of dream (or nightmare) that I was compelled to bring to life. So much about it – the colors, the music, the overall visual aesthetic, and the characters were all so clear before we even shot anything.

New Mexico in the late 19th century, as shown in Jt Mollner’s “Outlaws and Angels,” is a land where zealotry and hypocrisy go hand and hand, where Thomas Hobbes’ “nasty, brutish and short” characterization of human nature guides every interpersonal relationship. While that may not be an inaccurate characterization of what small-town life was like in the American Southwest during the Cleveland administration, “Outlaws and Angels” overestimates its own elegance, delivering a misguided ode to frontier ugliness.
Fittingly, “Outlaws and Angels” opens with a bloodbath, a bank heist gone wrong that leaves a Us Marshall dead. The gang responsible for the crime, armed by ringleader Henry (Chad Michael Murray) and laden with the fruits of their labor, quickly seek refuge from their newly-earned bounty. Starving and with no means of transportation across the Mexican border, the group happens on an unassuming farmhouse, home to the local preacher George Tildon...

Jt Mollner's feature debut Outlaws and Angels is a subversive and emotionally honest coming of age story with a strong female lead at its centre. Joining the recent batch of westerns made by indie auteurs who seem drawn to playing against genre tropes, the film defies any notion a viewer may have of good versus evil on the American frontier, aiming instead for a provacative moral ambiguity. Shot on Kodak stock and inspired by 70s European cinema, the film brims with old-school techniques that will excite fans of spaghetti westerns. All in, I think it's a bold debut from Mollner, who emerges with an original voice and a unique style. Outlaws and Angels sees a limited release on July 15 and will screen tonight at the 2016...

Like a heavy Southern drawl that lazily meanders through conversation, Outlaws And Angels drags its scenes far longer than contextually necessary. Imagine a Southerner leaking “Hooowwwwdddyyy folkssssss!” like a deflating balloon instead of clear, concise dictation (“Howdy!” and done). Characters just glare at the screen as director Jt Mollner has a field-day with zoom ins and outs that turn his dried-out, rawhide script into a crackly piece of fragile leather. Overindulgence mars this grim, rough-and-tumble Western splatterfest, which is comparable to a more interesting (but still tiresome) take take on Jane Got A Gun (with a darker, strangely jovial mean streak). Death certainly was a byproduct of the Old West, but could people really be so terse about it all?

“Outlaws and Angels” follows Henry (Chad Michael Murray), a seasoned outlaw who leads a gang of bandits into a high stakes bank heist set to make them all rich and give them a chance at a new life across the Mexican border. Unfortunately, the plan goes awry and they end up killing a U.S. Marshall. With a large bounty on their heads, Henry and the gang head south through dangerous territory. When all hope seems lost, the crew stumble upon the frontier home of George Tilden (Ben Browder), who lives there with his wife Ada (Teri Polo), and two daughters Charlotte (Madisen Beaty) and Florence (Francesca Eastwood). They invade the home and terrorize the family, but eventually unlikely bonds form and Henry is given one last shot at redemption. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below when Henry and the bandits learn that there’s a bounty on their heads.

"Sounds to me like he done bamboozled you." eOne and Momentum have released this official Us trailer for the indie western Outlaws and Angels, which first premiered at Sundance earlier this year. From director Jt Mollner, the film is about a group of outlaws who try to seek revenge when a gang of criminals attack a local family. The full cast includes Chad Michael Murray, Francesca Eastwood, Madisen Beaty, Ben Browder, Frances Fisher, Keith Loneker, Luke Wilson and Teri Polo. This actually looks more like something Tarantino would appreciate than a full-on western, with a big twist revealed in the trailer. Enjoy. The first trailer has been released for a western called Outlaws and Angels. It's always exciting to see a new western get released, and this is one that I heard some great things about. It premiered at Sundance earlier this year, which is where I was hearing the buzz for it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see it, but my chance is coming this summer!
If I hadn't already heard such great things about this movie, I'd probably pass on it because this trailer doesn't do a very good job selling the movie. It's a poorly edited trailer that has a cheap feel to it. Don't let that turn you off, though, because I've been told that it's worth checking out.

The first feature from writer-director Jt Mollner has just been treated with its first trailer. Outlaws and Angels follows a seemingly innocent frontier family (including Teri Polo and Francesa Eastwood) who are invaded by a gang of criminals headed by Henry (Chad Michael Murray). Seduction, violence, and revenge ensue in this western that was a 2016 Sundance selection.
Boasting a poster reminiscent of last year’s excellent Bone Tomahawk, Outlaws and Angels shows off cast members including Luke Wilson, Chad Michael Murray, and future Twin Peaks cast member and daughter of Clint Eastwood, Francesa Eastwood in front of a blood-red sun. They all look dirt-caked and tough, but whether or not the film can achieve the same level of character depth and shocking, realistic violence as Bone Tomahawk is yet to be seen by yours truly.
However, you can trust us as we said in our review, “The western aesthetic mostly...

Three bank robbers walk into a dysfunctional home on the prairie in Jt Mollner‘s cold-blooded Outlaws and Angels, filmed and premiering at Sundance in glorious 35mm. The premise naturally evokes Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, particularly when it comes to the outlaws, however light their presence may be. Amongst the three groups — the outlaws, the Tildon family and the law — angels, too, are largely missing in the film.
Opening on a small farm estate we are briefly introduced to the Tildon clan: patriarch George (Ben Browder) is a tough recovering alcoholic who attempts to get right with the Lord, even if his daughters Flo (Francesca Eastwood) and Charlotte (Madisen Beaty) aren’t buying it. Short on life outside of the homestead (they’re told most of the eligible bachelors in town have taken ill) they remain the ward of George until they are liberated by a band of outlaws.

Momentum Pictures acquired all distribution rights to "Outlaws & Angels," starring Luke Wilson, Chad Michael Murray, Teri Polo and Francesca Eastwood. The twisted and bloody revenge tale is written and directed by J.T. Mollner and produced by Rosanne Korenberg, Chris Ivan Cevic and Luke Daniels. Set in the Old West, the film tells the story of Henry, a seasoned outlaw leading his gang of killers and bandits into a high stakes bank heist. With one of the largest bounties in the history of the American West on their heads, they make their way south through dangerous terrain and surprises. "'Outlaws & Angels' captures all of the intense action and drama of a classic western, while simultaneously delivering an enigmatic, captivating story where everything and everyone may not be what they seem," said President of Momentum Pictures Berry.

To say progress on The I Scream Man has been an uphill crawl is an understatement. Things are looking positive, however, for the horror film we detailed in 2007 here . Director J.T. Mollner confirmed a bit of news that floated our way over the weekend. John Schneider and Christopher Eberts ( Lucky Number Slevin , Stag Night ) are on board as producers. "I am locked as director," says Mollner. "Mikos Zavros will be acting in it, and the two of us will be fine tuning the script. Either way, I Scream Man is still alive." There have been a slight casting adjustment. Schneider is now set to play the heroine's father, a roll that once went to Fred Ward.
