I don’t think there’s too many bigger fans of the V/H/S horror anthology franchise than myself. I’ve loved all three that have come before V/H/S/94 – they feature a range of brilliant directors and actors in original and gory short films. I loved that this newest movie would be hitting Shudder in time for Halloween.
We start with what is the wraparound segment ‘Holy Hell’ directed by Knives and Skin director Jennifer Reed. It shows a S.W.A.T. team slowly working their way through a building which is showing on various monitors or TVs, the videotapes that lead to each other segment.
And the first segment is ‘Storm Drain’ directed by newcomer Chloe Okuno. Shown as a TV news reporter and her single camera guy following up on a local mythical creature. There’s...

Earlier this week, V/H/S/94, the latest installment of the V/H/S series arrived on Shudder, bringing together a collection of newcomers, including Chloe Okuno, Ryan Prows, Jennifer Reeder, and Steven Kostanski, alongside franchise veterans Simon Barrett and Timo Tjahjanto, to create a new collection of nightmarish tales captured through the found footage technique. Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to catch up with Barrett about his involvement with V/H/S/94, and he discussed his approach to creating the story for his segment “The Empty Wake,” as well as how Covid ended up changing up some of his production plans, his experiences collaborating with his special effects team, and more.
Check out our interview with Barrett below, and be sure to give V/H/S/94 a watch now that it’s streaming exclusively on the Shudder platform.

Not the only Halloween-ready franchise being resuscitated this month, “V/H/S/94” puts back in action the omnibus series that was last seen seven years ago with disappointing third entry “V/H/S: Viral.” This belated return lands closer in quality to the 2012 kickoff feature than the following year’s superior “V/H/S/2,” as a mixed bag of entertainingly diverse if variably successful horror shorts. Going straight to genre streaming platform Shudder on Oct. 6, it should provide fans with a satisfying enough, seasonally apt new package of macabre tales still linked by a faux-found-footage concept.
That style does not seem a natural fit for Jennifer Reeder, who made the very mannered, David Lynchian feature “Knives and Skin” two years ago. That divisive movie certainly had a firm grip on its aesthetics, and she seems divested of both inspiration and conviction having to go with a hand-held video look here. An underwhelming wraparound frame for the other segments,...

Considering Fantastic Fest 2021 is this writer’s first time back at an in-person festival since Sundance 2020, I’m very excited (and a teeny bit nervous) about getting to spend a whole week indulging in movies from all over the world once again. Later this week, Fantastic Fest will be kicking off on Thursday, and will continue running in-person through September 30th (and the Ff Virtual Fest will begin the very same day).
And even though I’m always pumped for Fantastic Fest’s entire genre-spanning programming slate, there are a handful of films that have already caught my eye, and I thought I’d go ahead and preview 13 titles that I’m incredibly psyched to see as a horror and sci-fi fan. Also, I just wanted to make a note: I didn’t include films that Daily Dead has already covered at previous festivals. Not that they’re not worthy,...

Nothing beats a live Comic-Con with the scream of the audience, the thunder of Hall H, and the social media wattage that shines out of San Diego.

August’s horror and sci-fi home media releases are off to a great start, as we have numerous titles arriving this Tuesday that fans are going to want to add to their collections. Severin Films has put together a stellar limited edition release of The Changeling, and Scream Factory is resurrecting John Carpenter's Someone’s Watching Me! on Blu-ray as well. Somewhere in L.A., a Mexican wrestler with anger issues, an ex-con with a swastika face tattoo, a motel manager trying to buy a black market organ, and a gangster and his daughter all collide in a series of unfortunate, hilarious, and fully loaded situations. It was at Fantasia 2017 that I first saw Lowlife. This was mainly because the programming and PR teams were wild about it -- and for good cause. Director and co-writer Ryan Prows' first feature Lowlife is like Pulp Fiction on a budget, and there is a reason why so many reviews compare the two. This past fall, a sprecial screening at AFI was set up for Quentin Tarantino to watch Lowlife. Full disclosure: I hosted the Q&A. I can say that Tarantino (and the audience) went bonkers...

Exclusive: Entertainment One will finance and control worldwide distribution on Night Patrol, a high concept genre film that Ryan Prows will direct from a script he wrote with Shaye Ogbonna, Tim Cairo and Jake Gibson. David Goyer and Keith Levine will produce and Sierra/Affinity will handle international rights outside of eOne territories.
In Night Patrol, an African-American Lapd officer must put aside his differences with the area’s street gangs when he discovers a local police task force is harboring a horrific secret that endangers the residents of the housing projects he grew up in.
Prows, Ogbonna, Cairo and Gibson previously teamed on Lowlife, which Prows directed. That film premiered at Montreal’s Fantasia Fest last year and was released by IFC Midnight in April. Prows made the jump to feature after winning a Student Academy Award for his film, Narcocorrido, which he has since been developing into a feature.

Looks like Scream Factory is doubling down on their IFC Midnight Blu-ray/DVD releases as today we have word that the company is all set to hit us with not only Friedrich Böhm’s Wildling but Ryan Prows’ Lowlife as well. Stop us if you've heard this one before: A luchador, a desperate hotelier, a white-collar criminal and a newly freed ex-con sporting a truly unfortunate face tattoo walk into a hotel room and end up snared in the machinations of a sex trafficking, organ harvesting gangster. It's not much of a punchline, and you've probably seen bits and pieces of the set-up in other movies before, but you haven't seen them assembled into the lean, brutal, surprisingly affecting package of Ryan Prows' feature debut, Lowlife.

One of the most impressive directorial debuts I’ve seen so far in 2018 is Ryan Prows’ Lowlife, the viciously entertaining comedic caper that follows a variety of eclectic characters over the course of one day in Los Angeles, including a famed luchador with a temper (Ricardo Adam Zarate), his pregnant wife (Santana Dempsey), a motel owner (Nicki Micheaux) desperate to save her ailing husband, ana a pair of friends (Jon Oswald and Shaye Ogbonna) who see their friendship tested in unusual ways, with mob boss Teddy “Bear” Haynes (Mark Burnham) squarely at the center of it all.
Daily Dead caught up with Prows earlier this week, and he discussed the process of putting together the script for Lowlife with the writing collective known as Tomm Fondle (the group includes Tim Cairo, Jake Gibson, Maxwell Michael Towson, Ogbonna, and of course, Prows as well), the difficulties of pitching his wildly surprising crime story,...

Though I've not yet seen Lowlife, which opens today, it certainly sounds like my kind of movie. We have a great, exclusive clip, which showcases a pregnant woman, a concerned man, another man with a swastika on his face, and unexpected, armed guests. If you'd like some context for the clip before watching it, here you go! "What happens when you throw together a fallen Mexican wrestler with serious rage issues, a just-out-of-prison ex-con with a regrettable face tattoo, and a recovering junkie motel owner in search of a kidney? "That's the premise of the berserk, blood-spattered, and wickedly entertaining feature debut from Ryan Prows. “Lowlife” is not the movie you’d expect from a comedy collective making its first feature: While mordantly humorous, this tale of several lives fatefully intertwining in the dank underbelly of Los Angeles plays its violent, over-the-top events in pokerfaced fashion. Though the backtracking, overlapping episodic structure is reminiscent of “Pulp Fiction,” there’s none of the garrulous snark or fanboy winking Tarantino wannabes customarily indulge in. Instead, this team-written effort by L.A.-based crew Tomm Fondle (of which director Ryan Prows is a member) nicely calibrates a twisty course between straight crime melodrama and black comedy, one that has cult-following potential among adventurous genre fans.

While the seasons may be changing for the better, there are still plenty of reasons to stay home this April, as there are numerous genre films hitting VOD and digital platforms that are well worth your time. IFC Midnight has a trifecta of cinematic treats planned this month, with Lowlife arriving on April 6th, Wildling coming out on the 13th, and Ghost Stories making its digital debut in the Us on April 20th. For those of you looking to check out Deep Blue Sea 2, the wait is finally over on the 17th, and for those looking to experience some movies with more of a dramatic flavor, both Tilt and the controversial Us and Them hit VOD on April 10th.
Other notable digital releases for April 2018 include Dead on Arrival (4/2), Corbin Nash (4/20), William Friedkin’s exorcism documentary The Devil and Father Amorth (4/24), and Winchester (4/17) for digital platforms, while those hoping...

With a pulpy, non-linear approach to his narrative, co-writer/director Ryan Prows weaves a felonious web with Lowlife, his pitch-black crime comedy that brings together an eclectic crop of characters for an unexpected ride through the sun-drenched streets of Los Angeles through the course of one day. While the film may garner a few Quentin Tarantino comparisons, rest assured that Lowlife confidently marches to the beat of its own unique drum, making this debut feature from Prows one of the most surprising films I’ve seen so far this year.
Lowlife is centered on a rage-fueled Luchador named El Monstruo (Ricardo Adam Zarate), who feels inadequate living in the shadow of his family’s legacy. His penchant for pain makes him the perfect muscle to work for the depraved mob boss Teddy Haynes (Mark Burnham), who dabbles in a bit of everything, from drugs to organ harvesting to sex trafficking.

Coming to theaters and select VOD platforms in early April from IFC Midnight, the new movie Lowlife is teased in a trailer that has to be seen to be believed.
Directed by Ryan Prows, Lowlife stars Nicki Micheaux, Ricardo Adam Zarate, and Jon Oswald. IFC Midnight will release Lowlife in theaters and on VOD platforms beginning April 6th.

An insane trailer for a new film has been released for a movie called Lowlife. This thing looks like a wild and wacky dark horror action comedy. It certainly looks entertaining!
The sordid lives of small-time criminals collide when an organ harvesting caper goes very, very wrong. A Mexican wrestler with rage issues, a felon with a regrettable face tattoo, and an ex-junkie in search of a kidney collide in this wild, blood splattered adrenaline rush.
The movie obviously isn't going to be for everyone, but if you're a little on the demented side, you'll probably like what you will see in this trailer.
The movie comes from director Ryan Prows and it stars Nicki Micheaux, Ricardo Adam Zarate, Jon Oswald, Shaye Ogbonna, Santana Dempsey, and Mark Burnham. Lowlife in select theaters + on VOD starting April 6th this spring.

"Father, show me the way as a spirit of justice." IFC Midnight has launched an official trailer for a wacky horror/action comedy titled Lowlife, which first premiered at both the Fantasia Film Festival & FrightFest last year. There are a few adjectives that can be used to describe Ryan Prows' feature film debut Lowlife (review) but perhaps the most apt is nuts. The movie features a luchador playing muscle to a crazed doctor who is running a black-market organ ring, there are two hired killers (one of which has a swastika tattooed on his face), there's a pregnant woman and then a motel owner who is trying to save her husband.
All of these stories come together in Prows' movie which is a hilarious dark comedy with unexpected emotion and more than enough violence to make Robert Rodriguez chuckle with glee.

Director Ryan Prows introduced the screening of his feature film debut Lowlife with an unnecessary apology about how the movie should be buried deep in the midnight program of the festival and though it is, Viff also screens most of its late night selections with a second screening for those who don't dig the midnight movie scene though in this instance, I'm not sure the daylight crowd really appreciated the madness of Prows' movie.

In his second FrightFest 2017 interview of the day, host Stuart Wright talks to director Ryan Prows about his film Lowlife, which has its European premiere at Frightfest on Monday August 28th.
When a simple organ-harvesting caper goes awry, a twist of fate unites three of society’s forgotten and ignored: El Monstruo, a disgraced Mexican Wrestler working as hired muscle for the local crime boss; Crystal, a recovering addict desperate enough to arrange a black market kidney transplant to save her husband’s life; and Randy, a two-strike convict fresh out of prison, cursed with a full-face swastika tattoo and a best friend forcing him into a hare-brained kidnapping scheme. As their sordid, small-time lives collide, they must fight tooth and nail to save a pregnant woman from certain and gruesome death.
The Horror Channel Frightfest takes place August 24th – 28th 2017 at both the Empire Cinema and Prince Charles Cinema in London’s Leicester Square.

The underbelly of Los Angeles and following characters who are constantly struggling to survive by barely scraping by can feel pretty stale for fans of crime films. The 90’s explored every nook and cranny of this courtesy of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and the films that tried to benefit off its success. On paper, you’d think that in 2017, a film like Lowlife where it follows characters who have some connection would be celebrating its 20th anniversary. Yet, Lowlife is a new film and it is one of my favorite independent films of the year.
I will admit that having a luchador as a character in your film will always grab my curiosity, you still need to have a good film to hold my interest. A luchador named El Monstruo (played brilliantly by Ricardo Adam Zarate), who is not as big as his father or his brothers and therefore...

Great films often come out of nowhere. Such as the case with Lowlife, a thrilling crime caper directed by Ryan Prows.
