Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is doing something different for “The Smashing Machine.” The mixed martial arts biopic is the first film that could get the blockbuster action star some awards attention. And a first-look photo from the film reveals that Johnson looks different than usual.
Studio A24 released the photo on X. It shows Johnson in character as Mark Kerr, a wrestler and Mma fighter. Johnson appears to have some facial prosthetics, his characteristic tattoos are covered up, and his usually bald head sports a wig. He looks a lot like he did when he emerged as a pro wrestling star in the late ‘90s.

Dwayne Johnson is reminding fans of his original “The Rock” title for his indie moment in “The Smashing Machine.”
Johnson stars as Mma legend Mark Kerr, who infamously struggled with an addiction to painkillers. Benny Safdie marks his solo directorial debut with the A24 feature. Safdie penned the script based on Kerr’s real-life story and rise in the UFC. Per the initial A24 announcement, Johnson’s most dramatic project yet follows Mma fighter Kerr’s career peak during the “no-holds-barred era of the UFC” in 2000. Kerr was a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion.
Kerr was previously the subject of the 2002 documentary also titled “The Smashing Machine,” which detailed his Mma career fighting in Vale Tudo, the UFC, and Pride.
Johnson and Safdie have been collaborators on the project since Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions acquired the rights in 2019. A24 later joined as a partner in 2023. Johnson and Dany Garcia...

Dwayne Johnson is nearly unrecognizable in the first look at his upcoming A24 drama “The Smashing Machine,” directed by Benny Safdie and co-starring his “Jungle Cruise” screen partner Emily Blunt. The film casts Johnson as legendary Mma fighter Mark Kerr, who struggled with addiction and his marriage while becoming an icon of the sport. Blunt is starring as Dawn Staples, Kerr’s wife. The film is currently in production.
While Johnson looks typically ripped as Kerr in “The Smashing Machine” first look, he also appears to be sporting some facial prosthetics to help him transform into the Mma legend. Kerr was a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and World Vale Tudo Championship tournament winner. Over the course of his career, he won over two dozen Mma titles.

Remember ‘Black Adam’ released in 2022? If you don’t it’s perfectly fine since the movie was a commercial flop and panned by critics. Its only redeeming quality is the fact that Dwayne The Rock Johnson played the character, seemingly born to bring it to live action.
One of the things however that you will most likely remember if you watched the movie at all is the post-credit scene that promises a bright future for both Johnson’s Black Adam and Cavill’s Superman.
Back when the movie flopped there were rumors going around that The Rock wanted to completely change the hierarchy of power within the DC, quite literally as he allegedly wanted to take over the studio and position his own production house to the top to handle all upcoming Dceu projects.

Did you catch ‘Black Adam’ in 2022? If not, no worries. Critics panned it, and it didn’t do well at the box office. But hey, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s performance as the lead was solid, right?
But what really sticks out, especially if you saw it, is the post-credit scene hinting at a crossover with Superman.
When ‘Black Adam’ tanked, rumors swirled that The Rock aimed to shake up DC, literally. Allegedly, he sought to snatch control of the studio, putting his own production company in charge of future Dceu projects.
The Wrap recently dropped an exclusive report on the saga. Apparently, The Rock and Cavill’s manager, Garcia, plotted to boot then-DC Studios head, Walter Hamada. But their scheme was thwarted by James Gunn and Peter Safran, who were brought in to salvage what they could of the Dceu.

In a damning and somewhat bizarre new report published by The Wrap, a string of allegations are made about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's supposed lack of professionalism on the set of Prime Video's Red One (we'll get to those).
However, the trade has also spoken to at least four insiders with knowledge of a 2022 meeting which saw Johnson and producer Dany Garcia meet with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. The conversation was about bringing Henry Cavill back as Superman in Black Adam...and Seven Bucks Productions running DC in place of the DC Films boss Walter Hamada.
An individual close to Seven Bucks claims the meeting was only about Black Adam and meant to serve as a general introduction to Zaslav. Either way, Johnson and Seven Bucks were ousted from the Dceu when James Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of DC Studios.

However, it endured significant losses and suffered from the merger between Turner parent Tim Warner and AOL and was shut down in 2001.

Jeff Zucker and Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Imi, the new Abu Dhabi-backed owner of All3Media, has pulled out of its deal to buy the UK’s Daily Telegraph following press freedom concerns.
RedBird Imi will now have to effectively sell the Telegraph as it had already taken control of the British paper plus Spectator Magazine in December when it repaid owner the Barclay family’s debts, including a £600M ($753M) loan against the titles.
“RedBird Imi has today confirmed that it intends to withdraw from its proposed acquisition of the Telegraph Media Group and proceed with a sale,” a RedBird Imi spokesperson told Reuters. “We have held constructive conversations with the government about ensuring a smooth and orderly sale for both titles.”
The move comes months after RedBird Imi was prevented from bringing the deal home due to regulatory roadblocks amid concern at the upper echelons of UK government around press freedom.

As always, the video game industry has the ability to create titles based on virtually any genre. In the past, titles like Dead Space mixed survival horror with space, while other games like Age of Empires gave a strategic perspective on medieval or even fantasy settings with gods and myths.
With this in mind, a new game was born: Dino Lords. This experience is a mix of Dino Crisis, Command & Conquer, and Age of Empires. The trailer said it all, and players are very surprised by this combination.
The perfect mix between Dino Crisis and Command and Conquer Command & Conquer and Dino Crisis arrived to a new announced game.
There are a lot of experiments with games that combine two very different things that you never thought would work. Games such as the Horizon Saga, combining a tribe with autonomous robots capable of mimicking animals and even attacking humans, have gained immense popularity on PlayStation.

Fierce media rivals like ESPN and Fox Sports aren’t often eager to see the other do well. But the competitors may be cheering one another this weekend.
Fox and ESPN will this weekend each broadcast two games from the new — depending on how one looks at it — Ufl, a league that has been built out of the former Usfl and its rival, the XFL. The Wrestler-turned-Hollywood-star never skips leg day. When he was preparing for Black Adam in 2022, he had to build really big legs. The Hollywood star said that building those massive quads was one of the toughest challenges ever, but he smashed through it with giant sets and heavy lifts.

Jeff Zucker and Gerry Cardinale‘s RedBird Imi takes control of a 50-label outfit with production entities across the world that owns the likes of Fleabag maker Two Brothers Pictures, Traitors producer Studio Lambert and 1917’s Neal Street. The deal will complete in Q2 or Q3 of this year subject to regulatory approvals.
All3Media CEO Jane Turton and COO Sara Geater will continue to lead the company, RedBird said.
“All3Media is one of the world’s great content companies, and this gives us an incredible platform to continue to grow our expanding portfolio,” Zucker said. “The demand for new shows and ongoing existing series, both scripted and unscripted, makes All3 a perfect fit for us.

When Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Wednesday that an animated Moana sequel would swim into theaters in November of this year, it inspired both excitement amongst fans of the 2016 original and questions about the live-action remake set to star Dwayne Johnson.
The live-action Moana, announced a year ago by Iger and Johnson, is slated to hit theaters in June 27, 2025. Now, it is almost certain to depart that date to give both films space, according to insiders. Disney hasn’t broached the matter, and declined comment. Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions, which is producing the live-action version, also declined comment.
The two Moana films show how bullish Iger is on the property— and for good reason.
Disney was initially developing the Moana sequel as an animated TV show, but Iger and Disney Entertainment co-chair Alan Bergman upgraded it to a theatrical release based on the strength of what they saw,...

The merger of the spring football leagues is official.
The XFL, owned by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Dany Garcia and RedBird Capital’s Gerry Cardinale, will merge with the Usfl, owned by Fox, to create a new league called the United Football League, or Ufl for short.
The new league was announced by Johnson and Garcia during the Fox NFL Sunday pregame show.
“I think in the Ufl … these players are gonna play hard-nosed, intense football, passionate football,” Johnson said, adding that the hope is for the league to become a springboard to the NFL, citing his own experience playing for the University of Miami and being player “54” (a reference to the 53-man NFL rosters).
“Imagine all those 54s out there, and you tell them you’ve got one more shot in the Ufl and then to go on to the NFL potentially, how do you think they’ll play?...

Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia on Sunday unveiled plans for the United Football League, the new spring pro football league born from the merger of the XFL and Usfl.
During an appearance this morning on Fox’s NFL on Fox, the pair said the Ufl’s debut season will begin March 30, 2024 with a game between the Arlington Renegades and Birmingham Stallions, the previous champions from each league. More details are expected soon regarding teams and markets.
Last year was Johnson and Garcia’s only season as co-owners with RedBird Capital Partners of the resurrected XFL, which was competing with the Usfl for NFL-offseason eyeballs. The Usfl itself was in its second season of its own revival, operating with a joint broadcast deal with both NBC and Fox, with the latter also holding a minority stake in the league.

Exclusive, Updated: The latter half of the 2024 theatrical release schedule just got a shot of testosterone as Amazon MGM Studios and Seven Bucks’ epic Christmas action comedy Red One just set an exclusive global theatrical release for Nov. 15, 2024.
Similar to other committed Amazon MGM theatrical titles of late, i.e. Air and Saltburn, Red One will have a theatrical window before streaming on its ultimate home, which is Prime Video.
By releasing Red One theatrically on November 15, Amazon MGM Studios is looking to take advantage of the traditionally lucrative holiday corridor before Thanksgiving. Rival wide releases on Nov. 15 include Warner Bros. Robert De Niro mobster movie, Alto Knights and Lionsgate and Kingdom Story’s The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. I hear that the movie has tested twice and scores were through the roof. This was in the last week, we understand. The original testing of the movie over the summer...

Do you smell what Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions is cooking? If it smells like oil, solder, and suction cups, it’s because the company, run by Hiram Garcia, is co-producing Nacelle’s RoboForce animated series, inspired by the 1990s toy line. Previously, Nacelle and Seven Bucks joined forces for Behind the Attraction, a docu-series about the development and history of iconic attractions from Disney’s theme parks. I highly recommend checking it out. It’s super informative, and the episode about The Haunted Mansion is fantastic.
“We’re excited for Seven Bucks and Nacelle to partner together once again, especially to bring the iconic story of RoboForce to life,” Dany Garcia and Dwayne Johnson said. “We love that it’s a story about redemption, second chances, and rising to the challenge as told through the eyes of funny, messed up, renegade robots who finally get their chance to shine.

Jeff Shell, whose tenure running NBCUniversal came to an abrupt end last spring, is in advanced talks to join private equity firm RedBird Capital Partners.
The executive, who had already been working in an informal capacity with the firm, is in discussions to come aboard full time early next year, a rep from the company told Deadline.
The Wall Street Journal had the first report on the negotiations.
Shell exited NBCU last April after an internal investigation uncovered an “inappropriate” relationship with a colleague, who was later identified as a reporter and host with CNBC. In the months after Shell’s departure, Comcast President Mike Cavanagh took on Shell’s oversight duties and handed out promotions to key execs at NBCU like Donna Langley and Mark Lazarus.

Dwayne Johnson for President? Johnson says he was approached by several political parties in 2022 to run for U.S. President after a 2021 political poll found that 46% of Americans would vote for him.
“That was an interesting poll that happened, and I was really moved by that. And I was really uh, blown away. I was really honored,” he told Trevor Noah on his Spotify What Now? podcast.
“At the end of the year . . . in 2022 I got a visit from the parties, asking me if I was going to run and if I could run,” Johnson said. “It was a big deal. And it came out of the blue. And it was one after the other.”
“They brought up that poll. They also brought up their own deep dive research that would prove, should I ever decide to go down that road. . . .”
Johnson told Noah it has never been his goal to be in politics.

The sidelines at the University of Colorado football games have resembled Grammy and Oscar week in L.A. since Deion Sanders, aka “Coach Prime,” took over as head football coach this season. A-listers from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and Kawhi Leonard have shown up to see the Buffaloes run the field, and the star power is poised to continue as the team takes on UCLA at the already sold-out Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena on Saturday.
“I can assure you as a sports commentator and reporter for years, I’ve never had any reason to talk about the University of Colorado football,” says Stephen A. Smith, host of ESPN’s First Take. “Never thought about it until he arrived there. I’d never been to Boulder, Colorado, in my life. I’ve already been there twice. When you look at it from that perspective, you...

“Black Adam” filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra has been hired by Amazon MGM Studios to direct a movie starring Emily Blunt as pioneering female detective Kate Warne.
Melissa Stack wrote the screenplay from a previous draft by Gustin Nash. The untitled film, described as a “propulsive action thriller,” centers around a real-life Sherlock Holmes-esque character. Kate Warne was the first female detective at the Pinkerton agency and, according to a release, paved the way for future women in law enforcement and forever changed how detective work was done.
Blunt, who will also produce the movie, hasn’t finalized her deal because of the actors strike, but conversations are expected to resume once the guild has a new pact.
Dwayne Johnson, Hiram Garcia and Dany Garcia are producing via their company, Seven Bucks Productions. Kristina Sorensen is producing for With a K Productions. Kimberly Bialek will oversee for Seven Bucks Productions.
