Jason Black is the founder and CEO of Black Ink Entertainment. He has
been producing films for eight years. Jason started his film career as
a First Assistant Director and Production Manager in Los Angeles,CA. He
joined the Directors Guild of America as a Unit Production Manager in
2003. On this foundation he built a production services company called
Blue Cactus Pictures, Inc. Blue Cactus was founded in 2002, by Jason
and his business partner Chris Moore, and was the production engine for
fifteen feature films in four years. Jason sold his half of the
business to Chris in 2007 and moved home to San Francisco to develop
and produce original content.
In 2008 Jason focused on developing original content. To this end he started a development think tank with twelve writers and directors called the SMYTHY experiment. At the end of 2008, Jason had assisted in developing the voices of some of the best film talent in the Bay Area. The experiment was a success, and in 2009 Jason began producing two narrative features, one feature documentary and one short science fiction epic.
In 2007 Jason was the Unit Production manager for the feature film "Pig Hunt". The film was shot entirely on location in northern California for a budget of $6 million dollars. Film included special creature effects done by Kerner Optical (formerly George Lucas's ILM creature shop).
In 2006, Jason developed two feature films entitled The Land of Tigers (Dir. Fernando Lebrija) and Black Sky (Writer Adrian Cruz). The Land of Tigers wrapped production in April of 2007, and was financed and shot entirely in Mexico. Black Sky was developed for Blue Cactus Pictures, and though Jason was unable to produce the film before he left the company, Adrian was picked up for representation by The William Morris Agency. Jason also Co-Produced two feature films in 2006: Splinter, starring Edward James Olmos and Tom Sizemore and Simon Says starring Crispin Glover and Blake Lively. Splinter was sold to Dark Horse Comics and distributed internationally in 2008 by Image Entertainment. In 2005, Jason Associate-Produced and First Assistant Directed the feature film Journey From the Fall, starring Kieu Chinh and directed by award-winning director Ham Tran. Eighty percent of the film was shot on location in the jungles of Thailand, and on the open sea in the Gulf of Thailand. Jason supervised a three-camera set with over a hundred crew members and often more than one hundred and fifty extras. The film screened five times in the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. Each screening garnered a standing ovation. This film was bought and distributed internationally in 2008 by Imagine Asian Entertainment. Additionally in 2005, Jason Executive-Produced a new children's series called The Safe Side with Julie and Bill Clark (creators of Baby Einstein) and John Walsh (America's Most Wanted). This project is an important one for Jason as it teaches children in a fun and interesting way how to lower their risk of being abducted. A large percent of the proceeds for this project are donated to the Center for Missing Children.
Over the years Jason has produced feature films, documentaries, music videos, commercials, and educational videos in every format. He has established strong relationships with writers, directors, talent representation, sales agents, distribution companies, and publicity firms in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Mexico and Thailand. These relationships combined with great crew and equipment connections in LA ensure that Jason's involvement in any project will guarantee a high production value and follow-through to the market place.
Other executive and producing credits include: the feature films, Choose Connor, Mr. Blue Sky, Juan Frances: LIVE, Freaky Faron, The White Horse is Dead, and Red Rickettes; the feature documentaries, The Guerrero Project and Treasure Hunters; as well as numerous music videos and nationally and internationally televised commercials.
