Madame Web always had a steep hill to climb after becoming meme-fodder immediately after the release of its first (and only) trailer, but right from the opening scene with Cassie's mother in the Amazon researching spiders just before she died, it was clear that Sony Pictures' latest Ssu movie was... probably not going to be a big hit.
To be fair, Madame Web did end up surpassing (just about) the $100 million mark worldwide, but with a reported budget of around $80 - $100 million, and an abysmal 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, we can't imagine seeing much more from Miss Web and her teenage Spider-Women pals anytime soon.
Some felt the movie wasn't quite as bad as it was made out to be, while others were of the opinion that it crossed into so bad it's good territory.
We didn't review Madame Web here on Cbm when it was released in theaters, but if you're interested,...

Sydney Sweeney teased Monday that “Euphoria” Season 3 will mark a change in pace for the hit HBO teen drama.
“People will be really amazed with what Season 3 becomes,” the actress said in a recent GQ profile. “I think that’s good because Seasons 1 and 2 were so different.”
The actress, currently touting the release of her upcoming horror film “Immaculate” following its well-received SXSW premiere, Sweeney will next return to play Cassie Howard in “Euphoria” in “the next two months,” according to the outlet.
Looking ahead to a potential Season 4, Sweeney said, “I think that if there’s more story to tell with Cassie then, yes, because I do love that role and I love the community. But it’s whatever does the story justice.”

Sydney Sweeney’s rising career which has been marked by smart choices, unfortunately hit a roadblock with the dismal reception of Madame Web. Having gained superstardom with her marquee gig in Euphoria followed by appearances in The White Lotus, The Handmaid’s Tale, and the romantic comedy Anyone But You, Sweeney cemented herself as one of the most popular and desirable young stars in Hollywood.

It’s been exactly a month since ‘Madame Web’ was released, intended as the next installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, albeit without Spider-Man. The film aimed to explore popular side-characters but ended up being a significant setback for the studio, turning into a subject of memes. Despite hopes, it became both a commercial and box office failure, falling short of ‘Morbius,’ the previous low bar-holder in the Ssu.
Cast members are handling the aftermath in their own ways. Sweeney, who portrayed Julia Carpenter, one of the Spider-Women, joked about the movie lightly, while her co-star Dakota Johnson (Cassandra Web) addressed the situation more seriously, urging film studio executives to reconsider their creative direction. Johnson reportedly faced backlash for her statements, with industry insiders suggesting it might be challenging for her to regain favor with Sony.

Madame Web Was Kind of Weird
This…… is actually more comic-accurate than you think. At first glance, Sony’s Madame Web movie might look like little more than a hodge-podge of disconnected pieces of Spider-Man lore hastily strung together by a studio desperate to create a franchise out of whatever material it has the rights to at the present moment. And while that’s not an incorrect assessment, it’s also an incomplete one.
Unlike Sony’s Venom films or the maligned into memehood Morbius. Madame Web pulls much more directly from its source material and may even be inspired by several specific comic storylines. But what makes Madame Web, both the character and the film, an exception to the rule?...

Madame Web is the talk of the town at the moment. Despite its poor impression on the critics and its lackluster performance at the box office, the movie has created a significant amount of buzz among cinephiles. Apart from the fact that the movie is the newest addition to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Dakota Johnson being in the lead role also attracted a fair amount of attention.
Although the movie is not performing too well on the critical and commercial front, the press tour for the movie has fans pretty hooked. Sony and Marvel Studios have been collaborating on the recent Spider-Man films that are connected to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe – but on the side, Sony also has their “Spider-Man Universe” films, which are not connected to the MCU Spider-Man movies but are based on characters who were introduced in issues of Marvel’s Spider-Man comic books. Sony makes these movies without the input of Marvel Studios, and the latest entry in this franchise – following Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius – is Madame Web, which just reached theatres a couple days ago. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray has given the film a 5/10 review that you can read at This Link – but now we want to know, what did you think of Madame Web? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Sony’s Madame Web hit theaters worldwide on Valentine’s Day, and the film is getting universally panned by critics and fans alike.
Criticism is being aimed at almost every aspect of the movie, including its messy plot, sub-par dialogue, poor special effects, and miscasting of its star ensemble.
Much criticism has been directed at the casting of Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, the awkward teenage girl destined to become a Spider-Woman.
However, as these five previous roles prove, Sweeney hasn’t always been so miscast as she was in the terrible Madame Web.
Sharp Objects
Sydney Sweeney as Alice in Sharp Objects.
The miniseries Sharp Objects is an HBO psychological thriller based on Gillian Flynn’s brilliant 2006 debut novel. It chronicles the exploits of an alcoholic crime reporter, only recently discharged from a psychiatric ward after self-harming for years, who returns to her hometown to investigate the murders of two young girls.

Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web film had a restrained social media presence during its promotions. Despite being one of Sony’s multiversal Marvel films introducing new characters the high anticipation did not translate into favorable ratings or reviews for the project. With that said, Dakota Johnson recently made a statement about Madame Web that has essentially confirmed that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is doomed for good.

Sydney Sweeney is the woman of the moment. As is, the actress is never completely off the radar of the tabloids because of her performance as Cassie Howard in the popular HBO series- Euphoria. She has been recently making headlines for her performances in the rom-com- Anyone but You and the superhero film Madame Web, which is set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
While Madame Web has not done particularly well with the audience or critics, Anyone but You has done much better in both of these aspects. Fans found Sydney Sweeney’s chemistry with Glen Powell extremely captivating. This brings fans to the question of which actor is next for Sweeney to start an on-screen romance with. While there is no confirmed answer to this question, Sweeney has someone in her mind that she would like to star alongside in a rom-com.

The popularity and success of the Spider-Verse animated franchise have inspired Sony to introduce shared Spider-people-oriented world-building gimmicks in live-action movies as well, and Madame Web is the first step in that direction. As a part of Sony’s existing Spider-Man Universe (Ssu), which includes movies like Venom, Morbius, and the upcoming Kraven, Madame Web will introduce the titular spider-themed clairvoyant as well as a host of female spider-characters, as the movie aims to become the franchise’s first female superhero ensemble.
However, despite the fact that these characters are prominent members of the Spider-Society, appearing across comics, animated series, and games for a couple of decades, they are relatively obscure to the general audience due to not having a presence in live-action movies yet. This can make enjoying a superhero team-up movie a bit of a challenging affair, and to get rudimentary knowledge about the characters in question,...

Actress Sydney Sweeney became a household name after she played the role of Cassie Howard in the HBO drama series Euphoria. That role helped her bag bigger opportunities in the industry, including the role of Julia Carpenter / Spider-Woman in 2024’s Madame Web, which is set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (Ssu).
Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter in Madame Web
Sweeney’s character in Madame Web primarily exhibits superpowers like superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, and reflexes, but Sweeney believes her Euphoria character, Cassie Howard, would easily beat Julia Carpenter / Spider-Woman in a fight. Madame Web, which also features Dakota Johnson, Celeste O’Connor, and Isabela Merced had a terrible start as critics have annihilated the movie with negative reviews. The film is expected to be a major financial loss for the studios.

Sydney Sweeney is starring as a twisted Virgin Mary in horror film “Immaculate.”
The “Euphoria” actress leads the Michael Mohan-directed feature, re-teaming with her “The Voyeurs” director. The official synopsis reads: “Cecilia (Sweeney), an American nun of devout faith, embarks on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside. Her warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare as it becomes clear her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors.”
The trailer shows Cecilia realizing she is pregnant despite her nunhood while fearing the sinsiter potential of the baby growing inside her.
Andrew Lobel penned the script for the Neon film, while Sweeney produces with Jonathan Davino under her Fifty-Fifty Films production banner.
“Immaculate” marks many reunions with Sweeney’s past collaborators: Sweeney and director Mohan first worked together on the Netflix high school comedy series “Everything Sucks!,” while producer David Bernad was behind “The White Lotus.

Marvel’s Madame Web is nearly ready to make its Valentine’s Day debut in theaters, and Sydney Sweeney’s Spider-Woman costume is here to set fans’ hearts (and pants) on fire. Sweeney’s Spider-Woman costume looks fantastic, inspired by the character’s appearance in Marvel Comics. While I question the designer’s choice of headgear, the body suit, complete with silver web lining, is right out of the comics. The grey material along Sweeney’s arms is new but oddly fitting.

When Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" first hit theaters, it was the summer between high school and the start of my undergraduate studies. I was a lifelong fan of all things Batman and reading as many books about film theory as I could get my hands on. Simply put, I was the perfect target to get swept up in the frenzy of what many were considering the best Batman film ever made. Knowing this was the second part of a trilogy, my fantasy booking of the inevitable third film went wild, and as my Facebook memories love to show me every year, I went home and updated my status to say, "Dear Christopher Nolan, Give Me Harley Quinn!" When fans started making viral mockups of Kristen Bell donning photoshopped harlequin makeup, I saved them all.

We’re finally saying farewell to 2023 and kicking off a whole new year of movies. Though the box office remains all over the place, with presumably guaranteed blockbusters failing to take off and “Barbie” becoming a cultural juggernaut, 2023 gave us a lot of theatrical surprises.
But what does 2024 have in store? Right off the bat, sequels. A lot of sequels! Intellectual property remains the lay of the land and there will be plenty of continuations. Tim Burton will take us back to 1988 with his “Beetlejuice” sequel while Ridley Scott will return us to ancient Rome with “Gladiator 2.” We’ll also be getting a slew of potential franchise films. Jon M. Chu takes us back to Oz with “Wicked: Part 1” and Denis Villeneuve returns to the spice-riddled world of Arrakis with the highly anticipated follow-up to “Dune.” And don’t forget the “Mean Girls” musical.

A trailer for Madame Web, the latest entry in Sony’s divisive live-action Spider-Verse, has finally dropped, giving us a hint of the movie’s intriguing time-travel plot, the young women set to develop spidey powers, and the villain hunting them all – Ezekiel Sims. But another thing that the Madame Web trailer has given us is a first look at who Adam Scott will be playing. His name is technically not uttered in the trailer, but according to IMDb he will be playing an important character in the Spider-Verse – Ben Parker.
Most people know Ben Parker as Uncle Ben, the man who raised Peter Parker alongside his wife May after the death of Peter’s parents.
